I enjoy your breakdown of what's going on with SM but we differ in opinion where the music is concerned... well the stuff I've heard. I have not listened to the girl groups at SM much but I love the music everyone else has put out, even 2 baddies. I like like when groups experiment, some songs are going to not vibe with some people and some songs are but one of my favorite things about NCT and the sub units are you never what to expect. 2 Baddies is just one of those mindless fun songs to me, but for me NCT 127 are so versatile that they can make anything work. You got SuperHuman, Highway To Heaven, Favorite, 2 Baddies... they can mold into any concept imo Also I love Ay Yo and WayV's last album, the winter palace songs, etc etc... I think a change wouldn't be an awful thing but idk this seems really shitty. I know business can be cutthroat but these people are working there because of what this man Lee Sooman did to start that company and truthfully start of kpop and I just think he deserves more respect than this. This feels dirty and harsh. Another worry is SuperM. Capital seem to work closely with Lee Sooman considering how tied Mr Lee was to that project... do you think Capital will want to cut ties with a company that staged a coup? This is stressing me out lol Oh no and what if this makes some artists want to leave in solidarity with Lee Sooman??? Is that being really paranoid? Do you think Taemin would stay because I know he's close to Lee Sooman.
Also what do you think about the hoopla about Baekhyun's health and people blaming SM? They think because he was sick for 3 weeks and now eating once a day and working out a lot, that SM is to blame for not stepping in.
Always good to have a difference of opinion 😊. I think the SMCU Winter songs were outstanding tbh. I even liked the surreal painterly concept of the photos. But again, I really don't know who is behind what. Like what of Kwangya? Is that LSM or Chris Lee?
And I agree that on the surface of things, it feels like a really brutal fuck you to a man responsible for a lot of great music and careers. SM made a hell of a lot of mistakes, but they've become so artist-centric, it does seem a shame to throw the baby out with the bath water, so to speak.
Regarding SuperM and their future - Capitol Records wouldn't cut ties unless their contract was up and they no longer were interested. I don't know what the profit sharing model is with Capitol or what Capitol has agreed to do marketing/resource wise (anything?), but honestly there's not anything to worry about here. SuperM's comeback has already been announced and is likely being planned as we write on this infernal website, lol. Artists and groups are not likely to up and walk over this. I would find it very surprising. Getting out of their contracts would be too costly, and we don't even know how they feel about SM 3.0 etc. So, no need to be paranoid!
Re Baekhyun's health... I just am sooo sick of the victimization. If Baek wants to do that, he's gonna do it. Fasting is not bad for your health. As long as his meal is not actual junk food he'll be fine. And I assume he's drinking water and taking supplements. Like, fasting is actually good for your health. Why don't we let Baekhyun, an adult, decide what's best for him?
To me, all that victimisation stuff comes down to infantilizing grown men and also this pervasive, misguided savior complex. I'm sorry but men in Korea do not need to be saved from the evil mistreatment of... choosing their own diet and exercise plan? He's not 14. He's a seasoned idol. Marge from Utah isn't gonna change Korean beauty standards and deeply ingrained cultural values by crying on Twitter that SM are evil. What she will do is cause more racist journalism in the West decrying that kpop's evil dark side must be tamed. Sigh.

following that anon’s expat related question: any tips on learning korean? and also how did you find adjusting to living there? xx
i,,,,am not good at korean 🤣🤣🤣
i mean, i'm a fairly decent reader and i know enough conversational grammar to get by and i'm constantly learning more!! but i'm really bad still ksdhfghds
but in general, start with learning to read and write hangeul characters before anything. that will take you SO far, honestly, it feels really small but it's not, it's everything.
and then listen! listen so so much! i honestly love stuff like live radio (day6 kiss the radio, anyone?) and vlives for this, bc it's people speaking very naturally but also enunciating and trying to be clear. i've honestly learned more useful grammar tips from listening than from studying text.
and as for living here...it's the best. i adjusted almost instantly bc i'm literally just that elated to be here. i wanted to try everything and i didn't want it to be like home, i wanted it to be all new and an adventure!
i find that if you try to fill every niche from home, you'll be disappointed. it's hard to do that, and some stuff just isn't replicable in other countries. but when i lived at home between times in korea, i missed EVERYTHING about korea. when i'm here, i don't miss much about home except for friends and family.

 By Jen Yamato      May 15, 2019  |  10:30 AM
The stone-cold killer in a bespoke bulletproof suit is back — and if you thought John Wick was good with a pencil, you should see what he can do with a book of Russian folklore in the stacks of the New York Public Library.
The same goes for axes, guns, katanas, a lot of knives and even a few helpful horses as Keanu Reeves racks up the bad guy body count in “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum.” The latest installment of Lionsgate’s R-rated franchise about an ex-hit man killing his way back to a clean slate picks up right where 2017’s “John Wick 2” left off and mostly follows a relentless breakneck pace until the credits roll.
It stumbles only when the action slows down to send the antihero on a clumsy side quest in search of character motivation instead of another fight. He is the Boogeyman, the underworld’s “Baba Yaga,” a man of few words; expository dialogue isn’t his strongest means of communication. That’s what fists are for.
That said, John Wick could use a moment to catch his breath. Technically the reluctantly un-retired assassin is still a grieving widower who only lost his wife, Helen, something like a few weeks ago in movie time, as seen in the New Jersey-to-Brooklyn rampage of 2014’s “John Wick.” That film, by comparison, was a downright contained moral fable about a guy with a cool car avenging his puppy.
But there’s no rest for the wicked, or for lucrative Hollywood franchises. Each “John Wick” movie has upped the ante, the destruction, and the texture of the secret society of killers who rule from the shadows with their sacrosanct laws of civility and engagement. So too has the sophistication of its action storytelling matured now that Wick has a deeper awareness of what he’s really fighting for.
To rewind: Pulled out of retirement by the Russian mobsters who stole his car and killed his dog, legendary hitman Wick unleashed hell on the underworld from whence he came in the first film.
His past continued to haunt him in the lore-expanding “John Wick 2” as he crossed the High Table — the governing guild of killuminati that enforce the rigid bylaws of contract killing — and spilled blood on the sacred grounds of the Continental, a five-star hotel for killers. He was deemed “ex-communicado” and off-limits to those who might help him.
As “Parabellum” opens moments later, he’s unleashed onto the streets of New York City, bloody and presumably very tired, with a $14-million bounty on his head and an hour’s head start. In this heightened world, all of Wick’s adversaries get a push notification alerting them of the news.
Wick smartly sends his new canine companion off to safety and very suddenly has to fend off wave upon wave of highly trained thugs. The nonstop flurry of beautifully crafted fight scenes that follows tests both the threshold of the human body to withstand stabby, slicing, bone-crunching violence and the threshold of the audience’s ability to watch said violence.
Then again, watching Reeves outfight everyone on the planet — always dressed to kill — is precisely why these films exist.
“Parabellum” unfurls some of the franchise’s most memorable and varied action to date, including a speeding motorcycle sword fight that owes a marker to recent Korean import “The Villainess,” a glass-smashing showdown against “The Raid” silat masters Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman and an opening face-off against Philadelphia 76ers center Boban Marjanović.
Another early highlight is an extended showdown in a Chinatown antiques store, during which Wick and the squad of elite killers bent on offing him run out of weapons — only to realize they’re fighting in a roomful of knives behind display cases.
Directed by stunt pro-turned-returning helmer Chad Stahelski with stunt choreography by Jonathan Eusebio and Scott Rogers, “Parabellum” bursts with the series’ usual sleek and squishy top-notch action, and the healthy dose of the winking humor that breaks Wick and his cronies out of the bounds of the genre.
The script by Derek Kolstad, Shay Hatten, Chris Collins and Marc Abrams expands the Wickverse in intriguing new directions with familiar faces and strong additions to the colorful ensemble of characters.
It’s fun to spend more time with both Ian McShane, as Winston, the proprietor of the Continental Hotel with a fondness for Wick, and Lance Reddick as Continental concierge Charon, who gets to do more than bemusedly survey the clientele this time around.
Reeves’ “Matrix” co-star Laurence Fishburne also returns as the pigeon-crazy Bowery King, while Saïd Taghmaoui is a new mysterious figure Wick meets on his international odyssey visiting different oddballs of the underworld.
Anjelica Huston joins in as the Director, the tough and exacting head of a Ruska Roma ballet company staffed with tattooed ballerinas and operatives-in-the-making, and whose retconned connection to Wick provides key passage to his future.
Make no mistake, this is John Wick’s universe. Even the killers on his tail are comically in awe of his celebrity status — most of all Zero, a sushi chef by day/shinobi by night played with scene-stealing zest by Mark Dacascos (“Only the Strong,” “Double Dragon”). Less impressed but no less obsessed is Asia Kate Dillon’s no-nonsense Adjudicator, a High Table auditor in Thierry Mugler doling out penance for those sympathetic to Wick.
A few of these characters, with their eccentricities and arch deliveries, could convincingly carry their own spinoffs. None deserve one more than Halle Berry’s Sofia, an ex-assassin with two loyal Belgian Malinois whose screen time more than sets up a stand-alone of her own.
The Oscar-winning actress stalks into the Wickverse hinting at a loaded backstory, and as the evenly matched pair team up for a thrilling midpoint action sequence, the film flirts with transcendence.
In the breathtaking centerpiece, Berry and Reeves move wordlessly in concert with her attack canines across a perilous Moroccan marketplace at night, felling their enemies in mesmeric synchronicity. Stahelski’s direction, judicious editing from Evan Schiff and cinematography by Dan Laustsen create an atmosphere ripe with danger and immediacy and let the meticulous fight choreography and balletic ballistics breathe in wide, long shots.
What’s physically writ onscreen amid the furious fists, flying bullets and wall-to-wall gun-fu enriches and advances both character and story. Sofia’s palpable connection to her two beloved dogs underscores the franchise’s founding principle — that even assassins who have closed off their humanity in order to do their job should always have a soft spot for the pups they love.
Even if its themes of loyalty vs. fealty and art vs. religion may not fully cohere, “Parabellum” mounts another argument — asking us to take action cinema as seriously as the Caravaggio paintings, Tarkovsky references and tattooed ballerinas with bleeding toes that adorn the margins of this operatic symphony of carnage.
Reeves and Stahelski have worked closely since the director was his stunt double on “The Matrix,” and their shorthand makes the star an instrument of kinetic movement and destruction, the paintbrush splattering CG squibs across the canvas.
Look past the aggressive rock bro riffs of Tyler Bates’ score and the “John Wick” movies speak a subtle dialect of fluent, artful action like few other franchises in Hollywood. “Parabellum” excels when it tees up the sublimely inventive and wince-inducing close quarters fights with the lethally graceful Reeves baring John Wick’s psyche and soul between reloads and headshots. How far the saga can continue to spin arias out of that tune remains to be seen.

Penpals / Don’t Leave Me - Part 3
Jimin:
Series: Fluff/minor angst
Part 1 | Part 2
Honestly, at first, you were sort of weirded out. "Why has he sent me a CD?" You thought to yourself. You reached into the envelope to pull out the letter and instantly noticed a more relaxed feel to his letter. No school header, sloppier handwriting and using more 'slang' English terms.
You began reading the letter and one part stood out to you the most:
I completely understand Y/N. I lost myself too at one point and found it hard to get back on track but here I am today. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing with my life, but I'm happy to be doing what I love and I think that's what you need to focus on. Don't focus on the negatives in life. Focus on what you love and from what I have read from your letter, it seems to be languages. I'll help you with Korean, if you still want to learn it? I think schooling in our countries are also a bit different. We wouldn't have been allowed to get away with some of the things you spoke about!
He was right. You had lost yourself and focused on things that don't matter, people who don't matter. You had an overwhelming feeling of love and positivity towards this stranger that you had never met. You had never seen a photo of him even. You continued to read the letter.
I'm misunderstood. I like to dance and people think it's because I don't want to get an 'intellectual' career but honestly, it's not what I want. People think a lot of things because I'm a boy who dances. Prejudice and discrimination springs to mind. I wish people in my country were more open minded about these things, actually, the whole world. I thought I'd take the first step. I thought I'd be the first one to show who I am as a person. In the envelope, you will see that I have placed a CD in side. If I know you as well as I think I do already, you will have wanted to watch the CD first and have put it down because of the sticky label. Am I correct? Thought so. If I'm wrong, woops. I'll just have to learn more about you. I don't want you to leave me either, I trust you. I don't trust many people. I come across all friendly, which I am, but people mistake that as not having any insecurities. You're the only person I have shown this too because I have an insane amount of trust in you even though we've hardlies spoke. How weird is that? However, if you put this video online, I will hunt you down.
You chuckled to yourself and finished off the letter. As you put the letter down with one hand, you picked the CD up with the other. You started to tap it against your desk, thinking of all of the possibilities it could be. Before you even had a chance to put the CD into the DVD player, your laptop pinged.
Park Jimin: By the way, I'm the one who looks rather dark... I'm a lot paler now!
'Confirm friend request' came up underneath the message. You accepted so that you could reply back.
Y/N: Hey, how did you know that I was just about to watch the DVD this second?!
Park Jimin: Seriously? I thought that I'd send you this cryptic message before you received the envelope. I thought it would arrive tomorrow. I thought it would be funny. Guess not now!
Y/N: It's rather amusing actually. I'm going to watch it now, brace yourself!
Park Jimin: I TAKE IT BACK. PLEASE DON'T WATCH IT
PLEASE
Y/N
PLEASE
CAN YOU STOP WATCHING
PLEASE Y/N
PLEASEEEEEEEE
You walked away from the laptop, ignoring the continuous pinging noise coming from it and put on the CD. The video was of Jimin dancing with somebody else. At first you were confused, you didn't know who who was but the camera zoomed in on Jimin and you presumed that was him, especially because he was the darker one out of the two and he made the effort to point that out. His dance style was spectacular. You had heard of contemporary dance but having never partaken in it, you thought it was more hip hop than the classical style he seemed to be dancing too. You watched in awe of his moves and gasped through his story telling routine. You paused the video, wanting to talk to him straight away.
Y/N: JIMIN THIS IS AMAZING, YOU ARE A BEAUTIFUL DANCER
Park Jimin: Wow, thank you, that means a lot. I value your opinion
Y/N: Really, I can see the passion in your dancing. I can see that you love it a lot
Park Jimin: I do, it's something that I will always love
Also, you look different from what I expected
Wait what, how did he know what you looked like? Crap, your Facebook profile photo.
Y/N: SHIT, PLEASE DON'T LOOK AT MY PHOTOS ON HERE. THEY'RE OFF LIKE 2 YEARS AGO
I REALLY DON’T LOOK LIKE THAT ANY MORE
I'M BETTER LOOKING THAN THAT, I SWEAR AHAHAHHA
Who were you trying to impress? 'I'm better looking than that'.. Who were you trying to kid? You looked exactly the same, just with longer hair and slightly slimmer.
Park Jimin: I had no complaints about it haha
"Park Jimin is flirty" you thought to yourself, blushing at his compliment. Wait, you can look at his photo too. You clicked onto his profile and he had deleted all of his profile pictures.
Park Jimin: I bet you tried to look at my photos, sorry, they were 'OFF LIKE 2 YEARS AGO. I REALLY DON'T LOOK LIKE THAT ANY MORE. I'M BETTER LOOKING THAN THAT, I SWEAR'
Y/N: Are you trying to mimic me?!
Park Jimin: Mimick? I don't understand
Y/N: It means to impersonate someone in a funny way
Park Jimin: AH! I like that word, but yes, yes, I am!
Y/N: One thing you may have forgot...
Your tagged photos.
You were beside yourself looking through tagged photos of Jimin dancing but pulling stupid derp faces that his friends had tagged him in.
Y/N: Have you always got a permanent 'derp' face or? If you don't know what derp is, please Google it. I'm doing you a favour
Park Jimin: SHIT, PLEASE. HONESTLY, I'LL SEND YOU ANOTHER PHOTO.
Y/N: I already know what you look like from the DVD?
Park Jimin: Do you want me to try 'mimic' you again?
Y/N: Okay, just send the photo
He sent you a photo and he looked handsome as hell. Pale skin with dark hair and a gorgeous smile.
Y/N: BOY YOU SCRUB UP WELL
YOU FINE ASS
THIS IS WHY I'M MISUNDERSTOOD
I'M SORRY
I JUST SAY THESE THINGS
Why do you do this?
Park Jimin: I do know what those things mean you know Y/N...
Shit. What the hell had you just done? You froze in terror knowing that the person you felt some weird deep connection with now knows you think he 'scrubs up well'.
Y/N: Good lord, I am so sorry
Park Jimin: If you think those things though, I'm pretty happy with that
Y/N: I'm not a liar.
Since when had you become a flirt?! You felt all mushy. You couldn't be catching feelings, could you? Your conversation continued into the night talking about a lot of random things.
Park Jimin: So, what's your favourite song?
Y/N: English or Korean?
Park Jimin: You listen to K-Pop?
Y/N: I used to when I was younger and when I found I had a Korean pen pal I dived back into K-Pop again when I was researching your country.
Park Jimin: Cool! I really like K-Pop, I don't think I'm a good singer though. I mean I'm okay, but I have a lot to work on.
Y/N: Would you not like to work in performing arts? Try out for one of the boy bands they're always pulling through, they always need dancers!.. And if you can sing, even better?! My favourite song in English is 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody' by Whitney Houston and I love all of the remixes for it too. I really like Chris Brown too, some of his songs are really cool. My favourite Korean song is 'She Can't Get Enough' by Big Bang. You?
Park Jimin: I LOVE THAT. I basically have the same music taste as you. Whitney is a classic. If you can't tell, a lot of my English language comes from things I see online.. I have to talk a lot different in my English class at school. I can't believe we have the same favourite Big Bang song. I would try, but I have a fear of failing.
Y/N: You can do anything that you put your mind too
Park Jimin: What is it you want to do in life?
Y/N: I want to work in language and linguistics
Park Jimin: I feel as though I know when you're lying
I mean it isn't a lie
But I know you have a bigger dream
I can sense it
How does he possibly know? Ever since you were a little girl all you wanted to be an actress. You would always talk to yourself in the mirror, read our monologues in your living room and have all of your family join in and even say acceptance speeches. You paused, wondering whether to tell him your ultimate dream.
Park Jimin: Come on, I'm waiting
….
Y/N
You're stalling
Y/N: An actress
Ever since I was a little girl
Park Jimin: I'm going to 'mimic' you
'You can do anything that you put your mind too'
And I believe that you can do it
This is the sort of person you needed in your life. You always did and always will.
Park Jimin: I mean, my English is rather rusty when I speak it. I'm much better at written words but do you want to Skype call?
It's okay if you don't, I understand.
You died, you had just got home from school. You looked a mess and just threw on some pajamas.
Y/N: Sure but is it okay to call in a few hours. I'm just about to have food that's all
Park Jimin: I think you have forgot about time difference
Y/N: Oh yeah, I totally forgot!
Park Jimin: It's 1am here... so I don't think I'll be awake in a few hours!
Y/N: Why are you awake at 1am?
Park Jimin: I thought you'd be in from school now and wanted to send the cryptic message, I didn't expect to be up this long talking if I'm honest
He was making the effort to stay awake to talk to you which you loved. Your heart was fluttering and you felt your face getting warmer and warmer.
Y/N: Tomorrow then? 🙂
Park Jimin: Tomorrow 🙂
My Skype is pjimin95
Goodnight Y/N
Y/N: Goodnight Jimin
You closed down the lid of your laptop and stared over to your TV screen where Jimin was still on the TV mid spin. You un-paused the footage and continued watching in awe at his elegance. "He'll go so far" you thought to yourself, smiling, hoping he knew that too.
"Dinner's ready!" You heard your mother call after re-watching Jimin's video for about the 6th time. "On my way!" You shouted back. You quickly lifted up the lid of your laptop and added Jimin on Skype and sent him a quick message.
Y/N: Hey, it's me..
Message me when you want to Skype.
You felt your body getting warm. You felt fear. You feared what you were feeling for him. You feared being rejected in all possible ways. You feared not being what he expects. You feared failing in life. You ultimately feared the distance between the two of you. You feared him not being in your life forever.
*Next Day*
Park Jimin: I'm here, ready to talk when you are.
Were you ready?

(Sorry if this has been discussed) So how do languages work with your AU? I assumed the kids first language is English, but I got confused because they've used Japanese honorifics. Yet Viktor and Yurio dont know Japanese (Or at least that what I assumed because of the whole name picking thing). Then, how do they communicate with their Thai, Russian, and Japanese grandparents? Sorry if Im being annoying. Im just so interested and I wanna know EVERYTHING. lol
Not annoying at all, thanks so much for your interest in my AU and sorry for not getting back to you for so long!! >.
But also, sorta already answered HERE ^ ^;
To elaborate further (well you DID say everything LOL)…got super long so beneath cut LOL
After having lived in Japan as their primary home base for years, Victor and Yurio know conversational level Japanese at the very least. Certainly nothing advanced enough to pick up things like obscure naming nuances, but enough to get by even by themselves and Yurio especially’s getting pretty good at it (though they both can’t read for shit). Because their “main home” is in Hasetsu and most of the comics (at least when the kids are lil) are set there, they’ll sometimes use Japanese honorifics and you can assume they’re speaking Japanese then.
Yuuri’s not naturally good at languages but he really values his mates’ cultural backgrounds and having that be a part of the kids’ lives, so he tries. He takes time and will likely never be native-like in most of the languages he tries, but the effort does count ^ ^;
Phichit’s ridiculously smart in this AU, and also grew up with an advanced and very international education. He loves socializing, has friends all over the world, and has zero embarrassment over powering through new languages to communicate with them. On top of genuinely enjoying and being good at learning new languages, his careers (more on that here and that of everyone else) makes knowing more languages incredibly helpful.
Minami’s not hyper-language focused like Phichit is, but he’s incredibly smart and can pick up most things when he tries. In this case, he’s honed a lot of his own education on maximizing his proficiency at skills that will benefit the kids when he’s tutoring them, so all of their parents’ native languages. Because of how multi-lingual the kids are and how much time they spend skating, Minami tutors them more often than not and he makes an effort to test them through different languages, which means HE has to know them.
All the kids are absolutely fine in all their parents’ languages (though they do make frequent multilingual mistakes and mix-ups especially when they’re younger, and take a lil bit longer to get to the vocab range of their less multilingual same age peers ^ ^;). So communicating with grandparents is not a problem ^v^)b
Chris and Otabek are included in this post because of their regular presence in the family as well as their future more integrated roles.
The following are my current HCs for the adults’ language abilities in this AU (most likely not to be explicitly seen in comics since my own language abilities aren’t this diverse or advanced LOL), starting with most fluent to least fluent language. All of their abilities in their more frequently used languages slowly increases with time ^ ^;
Yuuri: Japanese (native), English (fluent but with audible accent, perfect writing), Russian (near fluent conversational but with strong accent), Thai (near fluent conversational, not good at reading/writing), Kazakh (casual conversational), French (casual conversational), Korean (casual conversational)
Victor: Russian (native), French (fluent), English (fluent but with audible accent), Japanese (near fluent conversational but with strong accent, pretty much nonexistent reading/writing skills), Thai (casual conversational), German (casual conversational), Italian (casual conversational)
Yurio: Russian (native), English (fluent, very faint accent), Japanese (fluent, mild accent, shit reading/writing), Kazakh (fluent, mild accent), Thai (near fluent conversational, heavy accent), French (casual conversational)
Phichit: Thai (native), Isan (native), (English (basically native, no accent), Japanese (fluent, faintest accent), Spanish (fluent, faintest accent), Portuguese (fluent, faintest accent), Russian (fluent, faint accent), Mandarin (near fluent conversational), Arabic (near fluent conversational), German (near fluent conversational), French (near fluent conversational), Korean (near fluent conversational), Kazakh (near fluent conversational), Italian (near fluent conversational), Vietnamese (near fluent conversational), Hindi (near fluent conversational)
Minami: Japanese (native), English (basically native, no accent), Russian (fluent, faintest accent), Thai (fluent, faint accent), French (fluent conversational), Kazakh (fluent conversational), Italian (casual conversational), Spanish (casual conversational), Korean (casual conversational), Mandarin (casual conversational)
Chris: French (native), Italian (native), English (fluent, faint accent), Russian (fluent, mild accent), Japanese (near fluent conversational), German (near fluent conversational), Thai (casual conversational), Kazakh (casual conversational)
Otabek: Kazakh (native), Russian (native), English (fluent, mild accent), Japanese (fluent, mild accent), Uzbek (casual conversational), Thai (casual conversational), French (casual conversational)
The first four kids are native in Japanese, English, Russian, and Thai, and fluent in French and Kazakh with fluctuating smatterings of knowledge in all their parents’ other languages. Arisa is the most talented and acquiring new languages and does so at a sometimes alarming pace ^ ^;
NOTE: While I did try to do my casual research about the languages spoken in all their native regions and have them line up with personal HCs about characters, I’m by no means an expert and if you have more ideas about what languages they should/shouldn’t speak, feel free to comment ^ ^ It doesn’t hurt me any to add to this list LOL
This post has been added to the YOI Future!Verse ABO AU Useful Asks Compilation post ^v^)b

Justice League Trailers
Tumblr media
This was the only GIF I could find, which was rather sad because I even thought of popping the Martha scene in here just to trigger all the BvS haters
Haven’t written anything for the DCEU fandom in a long while but I thought we could perhaps pool our brains together for a lark. The one thing I’ve learnt from lurking in the Star Wars fandom is that paying close attention to the foreign language trailers may yield interesting things in an age where the film market is global - studios understandably find it very hard to keep track of who knows what in what language. Now, I don’t think we will find any spoilers - I feel like Chris Terrio's early interviews and the Akira Kurosawa lead would be far better as an avenue for hungry fans to pursue - but I needed a break from work and to revive my withering language skills, so here are my observations from watching non-English Justice League trailers. (You are all invited to add on, and let me know if I misunderstood anything since English is my first language!)
The first thing I need to say is that they don’t get extra scenes in the different versions, although maybe I need to be a little more diligent in my detective work and actually watch EVERYTHING. Hahaha. No. I have a day job.
French
When Bruce speaks of the threat and Diana answers that it’s already here, the feminine is used. Why? I entertained thoughts of them referring to Ciaran Hinds (Edward Rochester/Frederick Wentworth and therefore ultimate literary romantic hero of all time) in the feminine, but this could be an error in translation. Cue how the trailer guys aren’t the same as the filmmaking guys, and how we know that Zack isn’t checking all these marketing shots as furiously as he did for BvS. Is she talking about the Steppenwolf threat then? Or...?
Just for the record I like Gal Gadot’s real voice better
“You should probably move” becomes more like “stay out of my way”
Although “vous êtes le batman ? ” is a total win.
“They said the age of heroes would never come again” no longer references the notion of return (okay, I’m just angling for a Nietzsche reference in the film; Chris Terrio please don’t disappoint me hahaha)
Another win: “je suis riche.”
“I dig it” becomes “je kiffe”, which is great for establishing the difference between the two characters (one uses slang, the other textbook French
“On y va” instead of “shall we” makes it very clear that they were waiting for Diana to lead the charge (or maybe French just tends to be spoken in a more direct manner than English is. At least my spoken English tends to be full of “um...if I could just...we should probably...”)
“Maybe temporary” becomes “This is evidently hard” or maybe “this is evidently a trial” when Jim tells Bruce it’s good to see him working with others again
Mandarin
I was hoping to pick up on the possible lead from the French version, but they used the neutral pronoun for it, so maybe the French translation is wrong. I wonder what’s the case in German, or maybe in the other Romance languages...
Yay all the names in Chinese!! Although it makes me sad that Superman is called 超人, whilst every other character gets to have a 侠 in their name
Which matters in Chinese because that word tells the reader that these characters are heroes of a legendary status, possibly implying they have extremely moral codes of honour
I am protective of my Kryptonian son, call me Martha
“Whoever you’re looking for” uses a plural you - all these dubbers and subbers getting ahead of themselves now hahaha
Instead of Justice For All, which was translated more or less literally in the French version (Justice Pour Tous), we have 正义得以伸张 which more or less means justice can prevail
The nuance in “I dig it” is lost in Chinese but “Maybe temporary” remains that way
“Shall we” is becomes “开战吧”, which I would translate as “let’s begin fighting” - not quite a command, because of the way that is phrased in Chinese, but I am missing the nuance in the word “we” being uttered (you can drop pronouns in Chinese)
The Chinese subtitles actually cleave to the English far closer than the French did, which I thought was surprising given how far apart Chinese and English are as languages compared to French and English, but what have you, well done on the subbers
Japanese
Disclaimer: my Japanese is really rusty and I was never one for reading Kanji, so do forgive my mistakes in translation
“超人たち” is used in place of “the others”, which may be a reference to all the other JL members being actually superpowered, or may also work as a reference to how they are building on Superman’s legacy (since Superman is 超人 and the translation of the whole phrase would be something like the ones with Superman)
Don’t you want to shed a tear for our favourite boy in red and blue
I’m actually really pleased they didn’t dub over Diana in Chinese or Japanese because for some odd reason female dubbers tend to have ridiculously high voices (just watch every Mandarin dub of a Korean drama ever)
Gal Gadot’s voice is one of the many things about Gal Gadot that are great
Seriously, thank the film gods she doesn’t sound like a magical girl fantasy character
Nothing wrong with magical girl stories (I grew up on Cardcaptor and I binged Miraculous Ladybug whilst learning French), but not for Diana, no
Hahahaha “You should probably move” becomes “run away” and a little more imperative in tone, which I think makes sense from a translation perspective because whilst you can be very indirect in Japanese it wouldn’t fit the characterisation or the scene
OF COURSE Barry uses 僕 (boku) to refer to himself, which fits nicely in with establishing him as the youngest and least mature of the group
“You’re the Batman?” is unfortunately just “Batman?”, which makes me laugh a little because I’m reminded of those sketches about his secret identity, but I’m also reminded of how much attention to context is required when speaking Japanese
“It has to” becomes “(the age of heroes) starts now”, which makes Bruce sound more active
Bruce’s response to the question of his superpowers is “金持ちだ”, which can be translated as “Wealth” or the original “I’m rich”
“Justice For All” becomes “超人集合”, which would suggest they are not refering to Superman per se but really just speaking about the League coming together, with no reference to justice (“正義”)
Incidentally the Justice League is a name that has been rendered in Katakana as opposed to Kanji, which to my mind rather draws attention to the comics tradition in Japan and how this is very obviously to them a foreign import
Bruce’s “My turn” becomes “覚悟しろ”, which does not mean the same thing but translates to “Get ready”
Diana’s “Shall we?” becomes “始める?”, which can be translated to “Shall we begin?” but again the fact that you can drop subject-pronouns all together in Japanese misses the significance of this being a TEAM effort
Although this is immediately rectified when Jim comments on Bruce working with in a team, because the word used is 仲間 (nakama) as opposed to 友達 (tomodachi), which alludes to them having the same mission and purpose (whereas the latter would indicate that they are actually friends who share personal intimacy)
Someone you can’t stand can be your 仲間
Like Hal Jordan
Now I have a need to check the Japanese version of BvS (have only seen the French version) just to see what Bruce uses when he tells Martha he is a friend of Clark’s
“I dig it” becomes “悪くない”, or“Not bad”, which can be interpreted a bit flippantly - note that Arthur isn’t speaking with the necessary politeness you would afford a stranger, which suggests he’s not concerned with strict formalities (my preferred interpretation) or that Bruce and he are close
“Maybe temporary” becomes “先が不安だ”, which I understand as “Previously (I had) anxiety (presumably about working in a team, note that there’s no playing with others joke in Jim’s line)”, which I love
I had a lot of fun with these and would love to see other languages - hope you enjoyed it!

The team fueled by 250kg of food
Tumblr media
There’s no doubt for those at the west London club, however, that Omar Meziane has been worth every penny.
Tucked unassumingly behind a Starbucks café and a sports bar at the Harlequins’ training ground, the team chef quietly goes about his business. While his corner of the kitchen is small, the food that comes out of it is plentiful.
With just one other chef for company, Meziane works quickly and efficiently. Over the course of the morning, fragrant smells begin to fill the air and piles of food accumulate.
On the menu today is Korean chicken — and lots of it. Vast trays of legs and wings are coated in a thick, sticky sauce, alongside 30 kg of potato wedges and huge bowls of brightly-colored salad. Close to 100 players and coaches will assemble for lunch just after midday, and Meziane predicts little will be left by the end of the afternoon.
Size is not the only thing that matters when it comes to feeding a rugby team. In his 10 years working as a performance chef across a range of sports, Meziane’s core ethos has remained unchanged.

“When I’m cooking for athletes, the first thought I have is about creating delicious food. Trying to make them happy, trying to create an environment where food is king,” he tells CNN Sport.
Meziane’s CV is impressive. He cooked for the England football team at last year’s World Cup in Russia, and the year before that was part of the under-20 setup crowned world champions in South Korea. His other former employers include England Cricket, British Rowing, and Harlequins’ Premiership rivals Wasps.
On top of that, Meziane has recently released a cookbook alongside England international James Haskell. He is, so to speak, a man with a lot on his plate. The Quins players are keen to keep him at their club for as long as possible.
“We joke that he’s our marquee signing,” club co-captain Chris Robshaw tells CNN Sport.
“He brings a lot of happiness to us all, especially when you go in and see the quality of the food he produces and the variety … Hopefully we can keep him away from the FA [English Football Association] for a while and keep him here.
“The wings we had today are always pretty special, it’s quite a nice treat. The good thing about Omar is he knows on our hard days he’ll give us a little bit more a treat and obviously on the easy days he takes it a bit healthier. It’s just a great balance.”

Meziane works with club nutritionists to draw up a menu for the week. Players tend to start the week with red meat and then turn to carbohydrates and lean proteins as game day approaches.
Rugby players come in all shapes and sizes — from speedy scrum halves to powerhouse props — and the amount of food each one consumes can vary.
The demand for quantity is not as great as the British rowing team, for example: “The heavy men during race season would eat anywhere between 6,000 and 7,000 calories a day,” explains Meziane, “a huge amount of food, especially when you consider it’s all incredibly lean, good food. It wasn’t burgers and chocolate bars.”
Quality is always important for Meziane. If he makes mistakes, people will let him know. When things go wrong in the kitchen, he finds it “personally upsetting.” But what about when he gets things right?
“I think the best compliments I actually get, especially after all these years of working with athletes now, is if they say nothing, you know you’ve done a really good job,” he says.
“There have been instances where you get really great feedback, like a particular footballer telling me that my rice pudding is particularly delicious. But generally speaking, athletes, especially when you move into game day are so focused on their job that they’ll very rarely say anything. So when they say nothing, I know I’ve done a good job.”

There seem to be few unsatisfied customers in for lunch at Harlequins. The players roll off the training ground and a queue quickly forms as Meziane begins to load plates with wings, legs, and wedges.
While he’s the only person in the room not donning club colors, there’s no question that he doesn’t feel an affinity within this environment: “I feel so much a part of this team at Harlequins and I’ve felt so much a part of other teams I’ve been involved with,” he explains.
As for game days, he feels every win and loss as keenly as any team member. It’s a way of living and working he’s come to love.
“You have highs and lows. When you win it’s the greatest feeling in the world, when you lose it hits us as staff as much as it hits the players,” says Meziane.
“I think the thing with working in sport is it becomes incredibly addictive. That feeling of being a part of something that not many people get to experience is very special.
“I don’t think I could ever revert now back to normal life.”

[Translation] 2017.12.22 SHELBEE interview with TRCNG
Tumblr media
Source: https://shelbee.co/kpop/2017/12/22/trcng_interview/
You have debuted both in Korea and Japan simultaneously. Please tell us your current feelings.
Hayoung: We’ve always been trainees, so it’s refreshing for us to actually debut like this and stand on a stage day after day, really fills us up with excitement. We will be working very hard from now on!
Wooyeop: We’ve just made our debut but somehow we are still lacking in so many aspects. Although we are nervous about our simultaneous debut in Japan, we have to work much harder than the amount of our nervousness.
Jisung: Debuting in Korea alone felt like a dream, but when we had the chance to debut in Japan, which is something we’ve also longed for….. I still can’t believe that we are in Japan at this moment.
What has originally inspired you to become an idol?
Hayoung: I liked standing on stage from when I was young, so I naturally started aiming at this goal.
Wooyeop: I was influenced by my mother but I also like performing in front of people.
Kangmin: I guess my motive was that I loved going to Karaoke
Hakmin: Me too! I love singing and dancing
Hyunwoo: I love rapping and dancing, and standing on stage really makes me happy
Siwoo: I love music, and I wanted to stand in front of so many people
Jisung: When I saw BIGBANG’s GD-sunbaenim, I thought he was cool, so from then on my dream has been becoming an artist.
Taeseon: I’ve wanted to perform in a fully seated Tokyo Dome lol
Jihun: When I was in middle school, I thought that BTS and EXO were cool upon watching them.
Hohyeon: I wanted to stand on my stage and perform with my own lyrics
All of you had this kind of thoughts and you all were able to finally debut, but do you have any events that made you realize you actually debuted?
Jisung: I think everyone will understand this. Before our debut, we were like normal trainees, but after we debuted, we suddenly started having fans and people who support us.
Everyone: *nods in agreement*
Wooyeop: That’s true in the official aspect, but regarding personal changes within us as a group, we used to order the same thing from the menu whenever we go eat. But right now, after we debuted, each one of us can order whatever they like from the menu, am I not right? Lol
Everyone: Ahh~ That’s true lol
You have already had your first performance in front of the Japanese fans.
Taeseon: As soon as we’ve entered the venue, we were hit by loud cheers. I was really surprised that the fans were talking to us in Korean and at the same time filled me up with gratitude. We want to learn Japanese quickly so we can communicate with our fans better!
Please tell us the highlights of your Japanese debut song ‘Don’t Stop the Dancing’ which you also performed at the event
Wooyeop: Our Japanese debut song ‘Don’t Stop the Dancing’ has a Michael Jackson concept. It has a slightly lighter image than our Korean debut song ‘Spectrum.’ Just as the song’s title -don’t stop dancing- there are many dance moves along with a catchy rhythm. The highlight is the part where we all do the moonwalk.
Hayoung: And in terms of the song itself, it is a song that our fans can sing along with us because it’s easy to remember. I will be so happy if we could sing it together!
Since you’ve just made your debut, what is the appeal point in TRCNG that you’d tell people who still don’t know about you?
Hyunwoo: TRCNG is the only idol group in Korea in which all the members are teenagers. We want to express the feelings of teenagers as long as we can (since we are teenagers). I believe that dancing and singing can bring in feelings of closeness with our fans. And above all, we are a group that has potential and room for even more growth. I’m confident enough to say that we are more energetic compared to other groups.
Then, what would be the appeal of each member of you?
Hayoung: I have confidence in being full of strength! I have done a variety of sports up till now. The proof to this is that I’ve been the school representative in soccer, rugby, and handball.
Wooyeop: I’m often smiling so I guess this strengthens the bond between me and the other person.
Siwoo: Since I’m one of the youngest members here, I think that makes me more pure than others lol
Hakmin: As for me, I’m crispy from the outside but I’m soft from the inside. Even though I look like a cold person, I’m in fact warm. I have that kind of “Chicken” charm!
Hyunwoo: We have so many cute members in our group, but I’m terrible at acting cutely (ie pleasing everyone). My voice is low and… I think I’m masculine.
Kangmin: I’m the youngest so I think my appeal is being fresh.
Jihun: Same as Hyunwoo, I’m bad at acting cutely so I’m rather masculine. Among our group, I’m responsible for cheering up the nervous members before our performances. Whenever I take the initiative to speak, the mood would be lifted naturally.
Jisung: I like writing so I’m interested in writing lyrics.
Hohyeon: I’m same as Kangmin. Being the maknae, I have a refreshing appeal too. I will show a bit of my charisma on stage lol.
Taeseon: Jihun is in charge of lifting up the mood before our performances. On the other hand, I’m in charge of calming the mood down.
Speaking about idol groups in Korea, it’s a common knowledge that they live together in a dorm. I’ve heard that you live together too. Please tell us your duties regarding the accommodation.
Taeseon: In our case, the duties of the members change every month. For now, I’m in charge of cleaning the bathroom. We have two bathrooms, and I’m in charge of cleaning the bigger bathroom.
Hohyeon: I’m in charge of clearing the table after eating food, taking care of the fridge and cleaning it.
Jihun: I guess that’s the most difficult role. I’m in charge of cleaning the smaller bathroom. It’s easy lol.
Jisung: I help Hohyeon. When he has it hard, I go and help him.
Hohyeon*: I’m in charge of the living room. Like wiping the table, cleaning the shoe shelves etc. The living room is large so there are 4 people in charge of it. There is me… (*note: this could be a mistake by the website because even after I contacted them, they didn’t know whether this line was said by Hohyeon or Hakmin since they’ve lost their original data, but I’m guessing it’s Hakmin)
Hyunwoo: And me
Kangmin: And me
Hayoung: And me
Siwoo: I’m in charge of cleaning the stairs and the laundry room.
Wooyeop: The kitchen… I wash the dishes when they accumulate.
Why is taking care of the fridge is the most difficult to do?
Jihun: Because there are 10 people who have food in this fridge. There is too much food so you have to manage it carefully, because it might get expired etc. If you don’t do that, it will be a mess. Well, usually when we find leftovers in the fridge, we’d call “Kangmin~~” He’s the first one to suspect.
Hyunwoo: He once put a spoon inside the fridge lol
I am sure your actual activities in Japan will start from next year, but please tell us what are your goals in 2018.
Jisung: I hope that next year we will win rookie of the year award.
Hakmin: That’s our goal as a team! Our seniors B.A.P.-sunbaenim have won a rookie of the year award before, so we want to follow them and do the same.
Hohyeon: We want to get No.1 on music shows too!
Taeseon: Then we want to increase our popularity in Japan!
Kangmin: That’s why I want us to appear on Japanese TV shows. The other day, I was watching Japanese TV in the hotel, and ever since I was very young, I’ve always thought that Japanese TV shows are funny. There were so many fun shows. I would love to enjoy having our own corners in such shows~
Wooyeop: Last night, Japan’s cityscape was really beautiful when I watched it from the Taxi’s window. And so during that time, I was thinking about us trying to perform in such a cityscape. Something like an outdoor event?
At the end, please leave a message!
Hayoung: Since TRCNG is a young group, we have an infinite potential, so please watch over our enthusiasm, ambition, and energy. We will be working harder!
Wooyeop: We will be showing you only the good side of us. Please take care of us!
Kangmin: Everyone, please love us, forever.
Hakmin: We will always love you! I will study Japanese even harder, and make enough effort in order to talk with everyone much more.
Hyunwoo: Thank you so so much for loving us, really. Let’s stay together for a long time from now on. We will show you a lot of our growing selves.
Siwoo: Although we haven’t shown people much of us, still thank you for the love you gave us. I will do my best in Japanese so I can talk with our fans here!
Jihun: Thank you for supporting us a lot. Fighting!
Hohyeon: Everyone, I seriously love you.
Taeseon: As 10 members, we want to show you various sides of us, with our passion and energy. We will be very happy if you kept watching over us from now on. Please give us lots of love!
Everyone: We will be in your care!

teach me how to live
Chris comes to me in a dream. She looks exactly as I remember her from 2005, before she got sick.
“Buck up kiddo,” she says. There’s a mysterious quirk of her lips, not quite a smile. And she does it again. She takes her thumb and forefinger and plucks the shoulder of my shirt sleeve. She used to do this to me any time I was being an overdramatic teenager, which was often. “You’ll be fine.”
It’s been about three years since she died and longer still since she was a big part of my life. This is the first time I’ve dreamed of her since the funeral.
-
K-Town is always so crowded on Friday nights these days. It’s strange to think it’s so popular now—you actually see people of all colors walking 32nd at all hours of the day. It’s a relief. They’ve stopped assuming I’m one of them.
I used to hate coming to K-Town for food. Mainly because it felt like the servers always knew I was Korean. They’d come, ignore all my friends, and speak to me. I understood every word they said, but could only answer in English. I wasn’t brave enough to try piecing together the phrases I knew in public.
The look of surprise on their faces always hurt.
I push these thoughts away as I walk into the BCD Tofu House. I picked this place because soondooboo jigae has always been my favorite. I can’t go too long without it before it becomes a craving. Lord knows, I’ve never been able to cook it for myself.
John is already standing there with my roommate. They spot me and I wave. Maybe it’s weird to still get dinner with your high school guidance counselor more than ten years after you graduated. I don’t particularly care.
We used to cram into his tiny office, a whole crowd of us. Didn’t matter if we had class, didn’t matter that he wasn’t our assigned counselor. We’d pop in at odd hours of the day when we should’ve been in class.
“Oh god,” he’d say. “I know this isn’t your free period.”
“Nope,” we’d reply, as we shrugged off our bags and piled into his chairs. He’d sigh but he never kicked us out.
Now that our party is complete, the servers sit us down at the very back. It’s a Friday, so after a week of trying really hard to be optimistic, I am as usual, worn down. That’s how my weekends usually go these days. Cry a little on Friday night, mope on Saturday, rally with friends on Sunday.
“You look tired,” he says.
“I’m depressed John,” I quip, and I flash him a toothy grin.
“Oh,” he says, nonplussed. “That’s not what I said though.”
“Okay, okay. The long answer is ‘I’m not tired John, I’m depressed.’”
“I warned him,” my roomie says. “I already told him that tonight was gonna be heavy.”
Good, I think. This is only the millionth time I’ve had to recount the trials of the past eight years, but it’s John. It’s easy to be honest when you’re talking to someone you know won’t judge.
“I dreamed about Chris recently. She did the thing,” I mimic the motion of plucking my shoulder.
He smiles.
-
When Chris was dying, Mama kicked me out of the house. Or, more accurately, she could not stand my grief and I had to leave.
It’s hard to speak of my teenage years with Mama. She gets cagey. She forgets. But that time, she exploded. She accused me of being so caring for a woman who wasn’t family. I was making multiple hours-long treks from the outskirts of Queens, deep into Brooklyn. All to visit a dying woman I hadn’t seen in ten years.
There’s no way, Mama said, that I would do the same for her. She knew already that I would not take care of her grave. That it’d fall to my cousin, the good one. I was rotten, she said. I was a curse of a daughter. Ungrateful and spiteful and with a heart incapable of love.
I forget exactly what she said that made me pack up my bags and leave. I know I was upset though—I only told her about my grief because I needed  help processing the impending death of someone who meant the world to me. Someone who helped me through the darkest moments of my adolescence.
I told her, I showed her my heart, and she reached in with her hands and smashed it.
I spent the next week on my friend’s couch. I went to the memorial service and saw all the teachers I loved. It’s weird seeing them as an adult—you relate differently. They’re people, with their own grief and problems. Chris had helped us all through them.
I kept it together mostly until I saw the scrapbook we’d made for her when she retired my junior year. It was a little yellowed, but she’d kept it. All those years,  she’d kept it. I read the message I’d written her and the pictures I’d drawn.
But the only thing I could think was: She’d kept it.
We took turns sharing our memories of Chris at the memorial service. Her children spoke first, then John. He cried and called her the great love of his life. And to my surprise, I also spoke. How could I not? I don’t remember what I said, just that I started sobbing halfway through because I never got to thank her properly.
She gave a lonely kid a place to feel safe. She was the first one to encourage my writing. She talked me down off ledges. For three years, she listened to me and made sure the things I said were heard.
She saved my life.
-
After dinner, we go to the Pret-A-Manger between 6th and 7th ave. I have dropped many truth bombs tonight. My rape, my childhood abuse, my heartache, my depression, my nervous breakdown.
Conversation starts light. Black Panther and Wakanda Forever. TV shows and why John should give Stranger Things a chance. He is a nerdy, crotchety old man and it is wonderful. A part of me wonders if having a kind father is something like this. Then I wonder if I will be looking for surrogate parents my whole life.
And then my mind spirals. I hate when it does that. I am with people I love. Why is that not enough? Why can’t I snap out of the funk? Why won’t my brain stop hamster wheeling the same negative, repetitive thoughts over and over and over again?
“You know,” John says. “It’s sort of like being in mourning. You’re grieving what you’ve lost. Right now, you’re going back and forth between anger and denial. A little bit of bargaining. The goal is to get to acceptance.”
“I don’t know how to be angry,” I say. “Or, I don’t know how to stay angry at people. My therapist says I don’t let myself externalize it.”
“But you are angry,” he replies. “That’s the simplest definition of depression. Anger, turned inwards.”
I don’t know what to say, because it’s true. I have a hard time staying angry at other people. I’m quick to empathize and forgive. Because I know how hard it is to wake up everyday, try and make sense of life, and then be a good person on top of that. But against myself? I will always, always blame myself first. I will never forgive myself for mistakes. I will never forgive myself for not being better, for not being perfect. For not trying harder. For being unable to fix things. For not helping more people. For asking too much from others. For being such a burden.
For not being the type of person that people want to be around.
For not being the kind of daughter my parents would have loved.
“Why do you give them so much power over you?” John asks quietly.
“I don’t know,” I say. I’m being honest. “It’s easier to stand up for myself when they’re right in front of me. But I carry their ghosts with me. They haunt me constantly, and I’m so tired of it.”
“You’ve let them define your story. You’ve let them define you.”
“No I haven’t,” I say. “Not entirely. I’m a writer. That’s a long and sad story, but I fought for that. I fought really, really, really hard for that. I just think of having to fight that hard for everything and...it’s too much.”
“So why do you let them limit you now?”
It’s reflex. Every child wants their parents to love them. You learn to adapt to their needs, to make them happy and proud. I didn’t care if it was at the expense of myself, because I loved them more. They were unhappy and lived such hard lives. Was it really so hard for me to be the daughter they wanted?
“It’s only been a little over a month. It’s going to take time,” I say. “They taught me to view the world in absolutes. False binaries. Black and white. This or that. I know that’s not true. Life has shown me it’s not true. I know that everything is a spectrum. I know that up here,” I point to my head. “But I still don’t understand that here,” I point to my heart. “I don’t think I’ll ever get it.”
“Well, all these things that have happened—it’s a lot for any one person. You’re trying to process everything at once. You’re just being pessimistic right now.”
I snort. “Have you met me John?”
“I have. And I think you’re an optimist at heart.”
“What? Really?”
“You’re sitting here right now. To go through what you have, to be here alive and trying—that requires some measure of strength. So yes, you are.”
I don’t feel strong. Most days, I feel weak and stupid. I tell John this and he sighs. When he asks what I want from my life, I tell him I just want to die a kind, open, and honest person. That if I manage to do that, I will have led a good, worthwhile life.
“Do you not think you’re those things already?” “What? Kind, open and honest? No. I don’t.”
“Well,” he says, “I completely disagree.”
-
The last time I see Chris, death is knocking at her door. I’d heard the phrase skin and bones before, but I’d never actually seen it. She’d always been rail thin, but now there really is no flesh to her. Her skin is stretched tight over her frame, and when she curls up in the bed, it is like watching a skeleton come to life.
It is so hard to see someone you love in that much pain. She is bleeding in her jejunum, a part of the small intestines. It is killing her slowly.
“Chris,” John says, “Do you know who these people are?”
“I knew them as soon as they walked in the room. Come here and give me a kiss.”
We do. I kiss her temple, which is soft and leathery. I forget what we talked about after. She isn’t lucid for much longer. Her blue eyes start to glaze over and she starts muttering gibberish. I keep a smile on the whole time, even though all I want to do is cry.
It’s not always about you. Chris taught me that.
Birthdays were a sore spot for me in high school. We stopped celebrating mine after I was seven or eight. My parents said I was too old for it. But Sweet Sixteen. That was a thing I wanted because every other girl had one and I wanted to be normal. Sixteen is a magical year—it’s the year in The Sound of Music where a boy will dance will you in the rain in a gazebo. Everyone wants to feel special and I only ever felt invisible.
And what do I do when I’m hurt? I pretend like it doesn’t faze me. I still do, to an extent. Back then, I said things like “I don’t see the point in celebrating birthdays. You’re just going to die anyway. I hate them.”
In the week leading up to my birthday I was insufferable. Chris just gave me a look and plucked my shoulder. So I told her and she listened. Really listened. Then the bell rang, and I went to class.
And then on my birthday, there in her office, there was a surprise party. There was decorations and all my friends had skipped class. Someone had bought a cake. There were presents and card. I didn’t know what to do so I just cried. Chris was there, and I didn’t have to ask to know it’d been her idea. In her soft voice, she told me that sometimes, birthdays are not about you. It’s for people who love you. And all you have to do, is let them love you.
Then she read me a poem she wrote for me. I still remember it.
I think of it, and her, on my birthday every year.
-
On the train ride home, we talk of simpler things. My morbid love of Darren Arronofsky’s The Fountain. Why we should let Hugh Jackman sing all the show tunes he wants now that he’s no longer Wolverine. My roomie and I bicker about something or other, and how she’s leaving me soon. John rolls his eyes. We get off the G at Church Avenue in Brooklyn. It’s a bit of a walk for all of us, but the F train is a piece of shit. I don’t mind. I don’t really want to say goodbye yet anyway.
“What they did was child abuse,” John says, “If we’d known, we would have called the ACS.”
Relief washes over me. I didn’t know a fever dream in January would unlock so many memories, but I’ve been questioning them this whole time. Whether I was overreacting or not. If this just wasn’t part of the immigrant family experience. To hear him say it fills me with validation.
“She hid everything back then,” my roomie replies. “None of us knew.”
“I miss Chris,” I say.
“You can visit her,” John replies. “She’s right by here in Greenwood Cemetery.”
“We will,” my roomie says. “And let’s get together again soon.”
John nods. “When the weather gets warmer, you’re welcome to my house. We can do a barbecue.”
Before we part ways, he plucks my shoulder.
I smile.

Lemons.
I drowned out all my sense with the sound of its beating And that's what you get when you let your heart win, whoa
That was “That’s What You Get” by Paramore. I really like the drums. #amaze.
So, on to my day.
“Maybe, I got up on the wrong side of the bed.” I thought to myself.
Wrong side of the sleeper bus bed.
The story goes something like this. I was in Hue, the national capital of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945. I arrived back in Hanoi today at 6:30 AM, and I got out of the bus. I wore my wet shoes (don’t ask, long story) and I stood in front of the bus waiting for my friends to get out. Now, part of the problem was that every one of my friends stayed in the same hostel and I stayed 20 minutes away from the hostel they were crashing in, so I decided to call my own Uber, and they called theirs. I don’t know, why, but the first Uber ride was taking too long and it was pissing me off, so I canceled it. I booked another one and was waiting. By this time, all my friends had left and I was the only person standing there. Now, this whole time, the local cab drivers there kept on pestering me to ride with them. For obvious reasons, I kept refusing. After a while, a particularly middle aged cab driver asked me if I wanted a ride and I refused. Now, I don’t speak Vietnamese, but then he said something to another driver pointing towards me and this sentence of his ended with the word “Pakistani”. For a couple of reasons, I was pissed.
One of the reasons I was really pissed was because you never call an Indian, Pakistani. It’s like calling South Koreans, North Koreans. It’s like saying “Pho” and “Bun Cha” are the same, “Mie Goreng” and “Nasi Goreng” are the same, Chris Pratt and Crisp Rat are the same, Isla Fisher and Amy Adams are the same. It’s just not true.
We’re. Not. The. Same. For. Fuck’s. Sake.
Now, coming back to what happened next. The possibly xenophobic, slightly racist driver gave me a stare down. He was staring me down after possibly referring me as a “Pakistani”. There was no way I was gonna back down. My ego wouldn’t let me do that. So, I stared into his eyes. That’s when the driver he was talking to came up to me and asked me in his broken English why I wasn’t riding with them. So, I told him, “My cab is on its way, I don’t need your services.” I was polite about it. But then the same guy started telling me to move away. He pushed me lightly. I didn’t flinch. Now, I had 2 options, I could’ve gotten into a fight, or I could’ve nicely walked away with a hole in my ego. I chose the latter. I moved away and stopped about 50m away from my initial position. At this stage, it has been 15 minutes since I last booked my Uber. 5 more minutes in, the guy who pushed me, comes over with a sad face and offers me to drop me at my location for half of the price of the Uber ride.
“Maybe, he felt bad and is trying to compensate.” I thought.
So, I canceled my Uber and sat in his car. Big mistake, but not in the way you’d think. I had the whole Old Quarter memorized, so he possibly couldn’t take me to a whole different location and leave me to find my way back home. Again, there’s no way he could’ve tried to mug me because I seriously wouldn’t’ve thought twice before hurting him, a lot. (That is why I always carry my Swiss Army Knife @Mai).
Now, halfway through the journey, the driver says, “You pay by meter.”.
I’m like “Fine. What’s the worse that could happen?”, after all, it was a really short trip.
Now, we stop. It’s time for me to pay and it says 18.40K. “It’s still cheaper than Uber,” I thought. But then I see that the comma was after 4 and not after 18. So the fare was 184K.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” I said to the driver without minding my tone.
“Yes, yes, you pay by meter,” He said.
Furious, I handed him a 200K, got out of the car and slammed the door and went home.
I keep my bag, take off my clothes and switch on the water heater. I sit on the bed with just my pants on, and my face in my arms. I was crushed. My face was that of a defeated man. I don’t know what did it for me, but for the rest of the day, I lay in my bed trying to sleep but failing. Maybe it was my first brush of racism/xenophobia, or maybe it was just the fact that I got ripped off. But I was done for. My body was aching because the Hue trip was really exhausting and combined with what had happened, I decided to skip the meeting that I was supposed to go to today. In a way, I was afraid of getting out of the house. At 2 PM, I did get outside of the house because I was really hungry and I didn’t have anything in the kitchen. Taking small steps, and avoiding eye contact, I went to my daily spot. On the way, I met my friends who were going to the meeting. I simply told them I wasn’t feeling better.
This is where I got some relief. The owner greeted me with a warm smile. It made me happy. I went up to the counter and “The kabab combo with no tomatoes and Coke for the drink right?” asked the owner. “Don’t forget the cheese!” I smiled.
He bought me my order. Trust me, it was the best meal ever. When I was done, I got up, thanked the owner and left. I bought some water and a can of coffee and went home. I was feeling better, but I still had no intentions of leaving home unless it was absolutely necessary, so I tried to sleep again.
At 5:30, I hear a hear a knock on the door. I rush to the door and open it to see the cleaning lady.
“Did I wake you up?” She asked with an apologetic smile.
“Yes, but that was probably for the better,” I mumbled.
She went on to do her job.
Maybe, it’s a woman’s intuition, maybe it was just a formality, but “Are you okay?” She asked me.
“A bit under the weather, but it’s fine.”
“If you go out, take the (pointing at the umbrella)” She said, again, with a smile. “Oh and eat hot food.”
That was the second thing that made me feel even better. It was as if those words made me forget everything.
Every time she said something, she’d smile. It was probably the thing I needed the most.
So at 8:30 PM, I gather all my courage and go out for dinner again. I went to the really nice traditional place that serves amazing Pho. I was greeted by the owner in a weirdly-excited way. I sat on the first floor. The place was jam packed so we had to share tables. I was joined by a relatively old, mid-50′s Israeli man.
“Hello there!”
“Hey!”
“Do you know what’s good here, my man?” He asked.
“Try the Pho Ga.”
“Nah, I’ve had that already. I’ll get their specialty dish.”
“You might need a drink,” I suggested.
He waved to the waitress and order the dish and a beer.
The conversation I had with this man is a story for another day, but after dinner, we went out to the Old Church, spoke a bit about science and religion and we parted ways. To him, I wasn’t an Indian, I wasn’t a Hindu, but a man. Just. A. Man.
The take away here is, we yearn for acceptance and more often than not, we don’t get it. But, staying in your room, all alone isn’t going to make things easier. So why not grab life by its balls and head out. Maybe, just maybe, it won’t be as bad, the next time around.
That’s all for now. “I’ll be back with more.” Said the man, but life,
Life Just Went On.
(P.S: Thank you Tya for explaining me the difference between Mie Goreng and Nasi Goreng.)

In general, when you’re talking about life, I’m just a regular guy, I just ate a Shake Shack burger, like, now I need to do 100 sit-ups. But I’ve always been sort of rebellious, when someone says: “You have to do this,” it never makes sense for me to do it. Like, why can’t a K-Pop person swear, why can’t they have half-naked ladies in a music video. It’s just a music video, why not? I’m a nice guy when it comes to daily life, but when it comes to society and how people think things should be a certain way, I have to challenge those invisible rules.

Having grown up listening to music of American artists, he admits his music sounds more “American” than Korean
His musical process starts by listening to a lot of beats sent by various producers, while thinking of what kind of song he wants to write, and eventually short-listing a selection of potential beats to work with. Then, he works on the melody of the song, along with ideas and lyrics. He writes the hook of the song first, and finally the verses. He is inspired by everything when writing songs : “just listening to good songs, seeing a good live performance, having good conversations with people. Just everyday life”.

He says he cried every day for the first two weeks he was in Korea, but decided to work hard even though he wanted to go back home, to not disappoint his parents
The name of his fanclub is J-Effect and his fans are called Jwalkerz (he has jwalkerz tattoed on his back because “fans always got my back”). Its pose represents his roots as a b-boy and its official colours are black and yellow When he signs someone for AOMG, he looks not only at their music, but at what they talk about, how they perform, their image, and how they are as a person. He says: “ They can be the greatest rapper in the world but if they’re an asshole I don’t want to work with them, they don’t have to be at AOMG”
PROFESSIONAL FACTS
He is founder and co-CEO of AOMG, along with Simon Dominic (although Jay owns more percentage of the company)
He has recently created H1GHR MUSIC RECORDS with Cha Cha Malone
He is a singer, rapper, songwriter, producer, actor, dancer,  b-boy, model, choreographer and entrepreneur
In 2003, he joined Art of Movement (AOM), a Seattle-based B-boying group
In 2004, Jay’s mother suggested him to audition for the Korea-based company JYP Entertainment, which brought him to Korea in January 2005 to receive further training in dancing, rapping, singing, and the Korean language After passing an audition in the US, he signed a contract with JYP Entertaiment and moved to South Korea to be a trainee
He practiced singing and Korean for 4 years and eventually debuted as leader of 2PM in 2008. After a controversy about some messages he wrote on his personal Myspace back in 2005 when he was still a trainee, he was forced to leave 2PM. He wrote messages about how bad was South Korea (He was in a foreign country, he didn’t knew the language nor the culture, he had no friends or family there. He was going trough a lot). Although outraged protesters demanded that Park should be removed from 2PM, JYP Entertainment’s CEO, Park Jin-young, stated on September 7, 2009, that he was going to continue as a part of the groupThe following day, Jay announced on his official fancafe that he would be leaving the group to calm the situation and return to his hometown, Seattle. He also apologized to the other 2PM members
He went back to Seattle in 2009
His vocals weren’t removed from the older songs he promoted with 2PM
Through their acceptance speeches at end-of-year award shows for “Again & Again”, the members of  2PM thanked Jay and reiterated their wish for his return. At the Mnet Asian Music Awards, the group paid homage to him during their performance of “Again & Again” with a spotlight shown over his usual position in the dance formation and his lines left unsung. However, some 2PM fans said that the members used to insult Jay after his departure
After returning to Seattle Jay worked at a local tire shop, because he didn’t want to rely on his parents
Soon after Jay returned to the United States, the South Korean public changed their perspective on the matter when they realised that his Myspace messages had been severely mistranslated and taken out of context, in addition to strong fan support for Jay’s return
On February 25, with Jay’s comeback looking more and more likely, JYP suddenly announced that Jay Park’s contract with them had been terminated, citing a separate “personal mistake” that Park had made in 2009. JYP would make reference to this unknown event several times in 2010, but would never elaborate on any details
“It’s not illegal, but it will be a very big scandal socially. We cannot reveal it for the sake of Jay Park. Even Sidus was curious and released articles of asking us to tell the reason. But we have to keep it a secret for Jay Park. He committed the act during AAA promotion without letting his members know. As soon as the members found out, they stated that they could not promote with him as a group anymore.”
This termination had been agreed by all 6 members of 2PM and led to fan boycotts on 2PM-endorsed products. Protests for Jay’s return to the group began to take place, not only in South Korea, but internationally as well. Various Jay Park-dedicated forums and fansites all over the world organized silent protests and flash dance mobs. Fans also hired a plane with a banner showing "J, what time is it now?” to fly over Seattle, and was broadcast on Seattle-based radio stations
On June 15, 2010, B.o.B released “Nothin’ on You” featuring Jay Park, in South Korea, where he replaces Bruno Mars’ vocals. His YouTube cover helped contribute to much of the song’s success in Korea, with more than 5 million copies sold. He subsequently thanked his fans for their support and continued to urge them not to hate remaining 2PM members
Los Angeles-based entertainment attorney Ned Sherman, CEO of Digital Media Wire, announced on May 28 that he was representing Jay as his legal representative. Sherman and his wife Tinzar reached out to Park, after seeing Jay’s story and feeling bad about what happened to him during the MySpace controversy. The Shermans and Jay worked on a lot of projects together, including his movie deal for Hype Nation, an endorsement deal with dENiZEN, Levi Strauss & Co.’s new brand, and others
SidusHQ defended Jay against claims made by Park Jin Young…
“We hope that Park Jaebeom will no longer be wounded by his former company and will be allowed to actively promote himself. We would like to express our gratitude towards the people that continue to support and regard him with warm eyes. We greet you once more with a better image. Thank you.“
In March 2010, he uploaded a cover video of B.o.B’s ”Nothin’ on You“, with his own rap and lyrics, to YouTube, which went viral and reached over 2,000,000 views in less than 24 hours

First, I liked him {Jay Park] very much. I could trust him. I chose him because we were chasing the same thing about music. Moreover, I felt we fit together in many points besides music. Definitely I pursue original and (American) native color in many ways, and Jay was definitely showing native color. We, VVD crew’s goal is to be competitive when we are compared to the (American) native artists, so we’ve been thinking highly of him. I was not so close with him in person, but you know, there’s some feeling that we can feel when we meet someone. I was 28 years old last year, I was not too young. I thought he was humane when I first saw him, and he looked very cool with a great mind and his move has been great so far. I think he has contributed a lot (to hiphop). He brought his fandom to this (hiphop) scence and I think he and Illonaire were a win-win relationship. So I didn’t have anything to agonize in many ways. I am not the person who only raps and I do both hiphop and R&B so I thought AOMG would be perfet for me because there would be many things I could do there.
He thinks that AOMG was the company that could support him without interfere, and that they could grow together
He  has a ship name with Simon, Simon choose the name himself: SimG
He has his own studio, GrayGround

His stage name used to be Demaine, which Gray chose  for him.  However, he thought it was too plain and simple, and he also thought his personality was also plain and simple, so he changed it

The producer also apologized to the rapper, stating that LOCO was not even aware of the azan sample being used in the track
He explained that after he won the first season of Mnet′s Show Me The Money, he signed with a new label that didn′t have the means to support him. Though he desired to leave the label, the penalty for breaking the contract was 200 million won
"That′s when I met Jay Park, and Jay Park said that if I agreed to join AOMG, he would pay the penalty. And my first track with AOMG ′Hold Me Tight′ did so well that I was able to pay my debt back to him in full.“
He likes Descendants of the Sun
When Jay was asked if he had been influenced by Gray when he decided to contact Loco for AOMG, Jay answered:
When we started, there were only me, Gray, Jeongoon and Chacha. Jeongoon and Chacha are composers, so there were only two artists, me and Gray. So I was observing Loco with interest. I have heard about him a lot from Gray, and I asked Dok2 how he was. In fact, Dok2 rarely praises anyone, but he told me Loco was good, so I thought he might be good. I met him often with Gray and I thought it would be good to be with him

He started writing hip hop lyrics when he entered in high school
He used to play clarinet at high school’s band, which helped him to improve his breathing and vocalization for rapping
He used to have another stage name but he changed it
Although his artistic name is “Ugly Duck”, he says he isn’t concern about his looks and he likes the way he is
It has a lot of meanings. If you translate it literally, well, it means an ugly duck. Of course, it relates somewhat to my appearance as well. Despite the word “ugly” connoting something negative, I wanted to twist that into giving off the ambience of “I’m still better than you even if I’m ugly.” This is also why I wrote down the lyrics, “I don’t care about being a swan. I like being like this.” But the biggest reason behind this name is that I wanted to rap “ugly.” There’s the phrase, “Ugly truth” and if you reverse it, it becomes “Truth is ugly” meaning I’m the truth! I guess I just felt compelled to the word “ugly” and thought of it as cool. Of course, I still think it’s cool to this day. I like it because it feels like hip hop. I started going by this…well, I had another penname before this one but at the time, I didn’t really have the determination to dive into rapping but once I did, I went by this (Ugly Duck) name.
