Eddie definitely hit the lottery when Buck finally got up the courage to ask him out. It took so long, way too long and Buck shouldn't have been as nervous as he was. The thing was, Eddie had never given back any sort of inkling that he liked men and he had that on again off again thing with Shannon. Buck had been so worried about accidentally breaking them up, being a homewrecker, especially since Chris was so happy to have his parents be back together again. Buck definitely didn't want to do anything that would take that smile off of Christopher's face. In fact, he would do anything to keep that smile even if that meant his own disappeared.
Buck waited, he waited as long as he possibly could after Shannon was gone. He waited for all the time that those grief books said he should. What he didn't know was that Eddie wasn't really grieving. Of course he was grieving because he knew that Chris would be upset over the loss of his mom and somewhere deep inside of him he mourned that family they made but he never really mourned Shannon herself, they had great sexual chemistry but everything else just seemed so forced, not easy like a relationship should be and he knew it.
When Buck actually asks, Eddie is relieved. He had noticed the man hovering around a lot more and there had been a weird edge to their relationship that hadn't been there since before Shannon showed up. He didn't want to pry, or ask, because he wasn't sure what Buck's deal was and he didn't want to embarrass himself by assuming something that wasn't true. He can feel the tightness in his chest dissipate as soon as Buck stops him after everyone else gets off the truck. He curled his fingers around Eddie's upper arm and held him back. They sit there, in the truck, across from each other and Buck takes a big breath before he apologizes for everything that happened, for Shannon and for Chris, and for everything else that he can't fix. Then, he asks. He asks Eddie if he would like to go out for coffee and that it's totally cool if he says no, that Buck knows he has a lot going on and maybe this is the wrong time to ask but he's going to ask anyway because he can't wait any longer.
As date offers go, it's not the smoothest one that Eddie has ever gotten but it is the cutest and it relieves all the anxiety that he has been feeling, so much so that he also lets out a breath after Buck finally asks, just before he chuckles and shakes his head, assuring Buck that yes, he would love to go out for coffee with him and maybe even dinner because Chris is at his abuela's for the night.
That first date was the catalyst for something that neither man could ever be prepared for. On the third date, Buck slept over, thanks to the fact that Chris was also at a sleepover, a different kind of course. Buck slept over and now Eddie has a perfect blonde, blue-eyed, shirtless man in his kitchen, scooping coffee into the filter and turning the machine on while he searches through Eddie's fridge and pulls out a half empty carton of eggs. He stands at the edge of the opening to the kitchen and watches as Buck moves around the space like he already knows where everything is, he has stayed here before so it's entirely plausible that he does but the simple thought of it paints a smile so big on Eddie's face that his cheeks hurt.
Then, Buck starts singing along to a song on the radio and Eddie nearly passes out, he certainly feels a little unsteady on his feet. Buck's voice is beautiful, so beautiful and happy that Eddie wonders for a moment if he is still dreaming. He's grateful for that thought because it's the thought that propels him forward to wrap his arms around Buck's torso without overthinking it and murmur a soft "Good morning," into his ear. Buck seems to have been expecting it because he leans back into the touch almost immediately with a soft "good morning" of his own.
It's so simple, so easy that it's almost reflex, them being together, and maybe that's why nobody mentions it when 6 months later, Buck is still there, and most of his stuff had made its way from his apartment to Eddie's. Buck moves in without any official moving in, and nobody says anything when they start showing up to work with the same things in their lunches and always arriving and leaving together. This is just the way things are now, and Buck thinks that he's won the lottery just as much as Eddie does.
