Chris yawns and rolls over, noticing how the air is already growing warm so early in the morning. It will probably shape up to be another exhausting day on the trail. 

The tent is small, and there’s only a space the size of a person between him and Leon.

The man’s sleeping bag had been unzipped in the night, but only for one of his legs to crook and poke his foot out. His back is a flat expanse facing Chris.

Is he sleeping with his arms tucked to his chest? He always has. He sleeps like he’s guarding himself, like he’s turning away and taking rest from the world. 

Chris sits up as quietly as he can. 

“Leon?” he murmurs. The sun is going to rise. They need to start out soon; they slept in today.

In response, Leon’s side rises and falls in a loud, waking breath. Then he settles again.

Okay, so he needs to be woken up, that’s fine. But Chris knows that startling anyone on this team could get him a black eye for his troubles—the socket still tender from sneaking up on Jill unintentionally. 

So he wakes him in distant, parallel ways, like a train coming through the valley in the morning. He unzips his bag and rolls it up. He unwraps an energy bar. He picks up a bag from the wrong end and has to put away everything when it falls out onto the ground. This was not meant to happen, but it seems to be the final needed push to rouse Leon.

“S’going on?” he slurs, raising his head. He blinks up at the tent canopy. There’s a hint of daylight falling across the panel. 

“We’re getting a late start today. Hope you enjoyed that extra hour,” Chris says, smiling. 

“Mmrgh.” Leon buries his face in his pillow. 

Chris laughs softly. Outside the tent walls, he hears the bright sounds of zipping and shuffling, and he knows the others are waking up. 

Not much time to waste, then. Rebecca is a kind research lead, but she also follows her color-coded schedule like it’s the word of god. He’d like to avoid another pep talk. 

“C’mon, on your feet,” he says. He steps back over to Leon and crouches to rub his back, vigorous with his flat palms. Should get some life back into him. 

Leon complains with a high noise in his throat. 

“Busy day today.”

“Bleugh. Again?”

“Yep. We’ll have a rest tomorrow.”

Leon groans and pushes himself upright. His hair falls messily around his face.

He’s so much more tired than Chris thought he’d be; he always seemed so aware and alert at meetings, in the few times a month when Chris had the chance to interact. It turns out that it takes a bit of time to work up to alertness.

It's kind of endearing. It’s also ironic. Now they’re finally on the trip, where they rise before the sun and immediately get back on the trail. 

It seems like he’s getting closer to being fully awake. Chris will get a water bottle ready for him, with one of those caffeine packets stirred in. 

Before he does, he squeezes the back of Leon’s neck and smooths out the back of his shirt, then he stands. “Think there’s one more of the cookie bars,” he says. “Could be yours if you get up before Piers.”

“Asshole already had two,” Leon grumbles. He starts kicking out of his sleeping bag and brushing his hair out of his face. “Those are the only good ones.”

Right on time, they both hear a laugh in the other tent—some startlingly bright conversation happening so early—and Leon sighs harshly. 

“Fucking morning people.”

Now that applications are done, I can rewire my brain back to Chreon and work on the 🍯 fic. Hoping to have Ch. 3 done soon, but here’s a little sneaky peek in the meantime… :3

He doesn’t even feel it when it happens, only notices the bits and pieces of drywall as they crumble to the floor in a heap. Chris flexes his hand, knuckles dragging against the stud within the wall he has now aerated with a puncture hole. Dust and debris collects around his fingers as he drags it out without conscious thought, the dull throb pulsing along his nerves as he absently glances down to see crimson coagulating amongst the soot. 

Jill is talking to him but he’s not paying it much attention, the words mashing together to drone on in the background as Chris’ attention remains transfixed on the screen; gaze directed at the glimpse of light, tousled locks etched in the corner of the frame. 

Without a doubt, he knows that’s Leon.

Leon sighs, letting his head fall to the side to rest on Chris's shoulder, the warm thighs under his own legs and strong arms supporting his back leaving him drowsy and comfortable for the first time in... a while. His legs are covered in the soft, colorful, patchwork-style quilt that hides the plaster cast surrounding the entirety of his right calf, lighter shades of fabric arranged in the centre to create the outline of an eight-pointed star made up of hundreds of little diamond shapes. The edges of it are threadbare, worn from the long years Chris has owned it, but it's still cozy enough that Leon can't help but let his eyelids flutter shut in relief.

"How are you doing?" Chris murmurs quietly, the drone of the television only halfway audible in the background. There's the sound of rattling as he picks up the mug from the side table, maneuvering it around Leon's back to settle it in Leon's hands without being asked. Leon sits up slightly to accept it, sipping the warm, honeyed liquid with a sigh.

"I'm alright, Chris," he says tiredly. "I'm not dying."

"I know." Leon winces at the edge of hurt in Chris's voice, shifting so that he can look him in the eye. Chris's gaze is softer than he deserves, those brown eyes warm enough that something in Leon's chest shudders and buckles, the urge to look away and hide from such obvious love leaving him oddly uncomfortable. He makes himself hold Chris's gaze, who reaches up with a big hand to tuck Leon's bangs behind his ear. "It's just that you weren't. I saw it happen, you know---you can't blame me for being concerned."

"It was bad," Leon acquiesces, opening his mouth to say more, only for the words to die in his throat. He takes a shaky sip of tea in an attempt to wash away the sudden strange lump of emotion, clearing his throat with effort once the warm liquid reaches his stomach. His arm aches when he lowers the mug, eyes burning from the lingering effects of smoke and strain, and suddenly everything just hurts. He leans into Chris's chest again, letting himself fall back into the warm embrace.

Chris strokes his hair another time and reaches down to adjust the blanket around Leon's waist, humming lightly. "Okay," he says, clearly not convinced. "Sure."

They lapse into silence for a long time. Leon plays with the mug in his hands, deft fingers tapping the ceramic edge. He exhales, feeling the pain shudder through his ribcage, and closes his eyes.

"It hurts," he says finally. The olive branch, reaching out with trembling leaves.

"I can work with that," Chris says, and Leon laughs brokenly. He tucks his forehead against Chris's warm neck, ignoring the twitch of his lower lip. "Let me get you something to help."

How odd it is, to be cared for.

Oh anon, my observation of the characters and what I like to read in fanfic are...no they're still pretty close aligned but I give fanfic more leeway I suppose. However, for whatever you read and enjoy PLEASE leave the authors a nice comment. A little smiley or heart emoji does wonders!

uhm. characterization. dialogue. emotional shit? idk i think i do best when i have intimate moments with two people. tiny everyday moments and mundane shit. like that. if i get going writing sometimes flows super well and i think i can get consistently readable stuff done in one go. but that'd require getting going lol.

action. i suck at action. i also suck at it in the way that i can't actually make myself start writing. i got way too co-dependent when i still had people excitedly participating in the process and now i sit here sad doing nothing :'D but anyway. writing action and having some self-discipline lol.

depends very heavily on the context. in general i do think it should be all in one language for readability but there are exceptions. i've done it too lol but it was only like a line or two in finnish :'D

diru, twenty years ago lmao, it's like a different lifetime. i only learned of the existence of fanfic at the ripe old age of nineteen lol but yeah it's still been so long now.

Hello! I’m back to talk about Resident Evil fandom misogyny! Are y’all sick of me yet? Too bad!

I know my source for this fucking sucks (it’s ao3) but since I’ve bitched about the horrible way RE fics on ao3 are somewhat reflective of the fandom before, and bc what I saw pissed me off, I’m gonna talk about it.

And unlike some people, if y’all don’t care about it, I’m gonna put it under a cut, and NOT post my annoying ramblings in the main tag as if they’re facts and not just my interpretations and criticism of fandom wide expression

So I was thinking about making a post saying “merry yaoimas (chreon) and a happy new yuri (femslash re ship)” with the latter parantheses actually holding an re ship. But that did make me pause and think, what was the most popular femslash re ship? I know I have my favorites (claida, chamberfield, and ashuela being most prominent), but I’m also aware that those are rarepairs and probably not indicative of the fandom as a whole.

The first thing I did was go to ao3, which, again, while not indicative of the fandom as a whole, is still large and worth looking at. These three under filters should’ve been my first clue that this was going to be abysmal

8.4k m/m fics. f/f isn’t even half of that. Now, when I saw this, I was disappointed but not surprised, and I stupidly saw the F/M being more popular and thinking “Oh right cuz Leon x female reader people are annoying” (keep this in mind for like two paragraphs later)

Anyway, I filtered it to only contain f/f pairings, so I could see which pairings were the most popular, and I genuinely had no idea. After all, most of the games in the series barely have women interact at all, so like, were people shipping Claire Redfield and Jill Valentine in 2000 because they were the only two female protagonists (who had also appeared in two games), even though they’d never interacted? Did the remakes and recent movies instill people with a love for Claire x Rebecca like I enjoyed? Or did we circle back to the late 90s due to the remakes of 2 and 3 where Claire and Jill were protagonists of big re games and thus people wanted to ship them?

In my foolish decision to think about, you know the main characters of the series that spawn multiple games and are iconic staples of the series’ existence as a whole, I forgot one thing: people on the internet are horny first, and human beings second

Ngl, considering that I’d made multiple posts bitching about this very phenomenon, I was more than a little peeved, and also felt dumb for having forgotten about this. So first I decided to filter out the character tag “reader” and-

Um. I mean. What I meant to say, was that I then filtered out all of the relationships that just came from re8 “fans” being horny. Then I was left with this

So out of THAT list of ten ships, only six of them were actually f/f, the most popular having 120 fics and the least popular having 38. If you don’t feel like scrolling back up, there were 3913 fics in the re tag which were tagged with f/f

So I think, generally, that Claire/Jill is the most popular re f/f ship, at least in the ao3 community. Case closed, right?

Wrong. Now I had to see if that was actually true. Because if I know one thing about re writers, it’s that they include f/f as an afterthought or some background bs to a fic focused on a m/m ship

So I counted, and I did my best to split all fics where Claire/Jill were tagged into three types: background, focused, and given equal focus between them and one or more pairings. Some didn’t really fit, like fics that were just a collection of one shots (or more commonly, collection of short smuts) but those I also left out of the Claire/Jill focused count, because they weren’t focused on them. So after going through all 141 (yup that’s really all the Claire/Jill ships there are) fics, here’s the number I ended up with

82 fics where they were the focus ship

14 fics where they were given equal focus between one or more pairings

The rest (45) were neither

Not gonna lie, I was pretty relieved to see that fics where they were the focus was more than half of the total. And as I went further back, more fics focused on Claire/Jill as opposed to having them be a background ship. Also, for fun, I checked the ratings for Claire/Jill fics

And although I didn’t cross reference, I did generally notice a lot more of the fics focused on Claire/Jill were smut first, and fluff secondarily. Most of them too were also either one chapter (complete or incomplete) or generally just short. If a fic had many chapters/high word count, Claire/Jill almost always wasn’t the main ship, and sometimes shared the spotlight with another ship.

So is this reflective of the whole fandom? No, of course not. Is this indicative of a major problem with the fandom not caring about female characters? Yeah, literally all social media is indicative of it.

It’s not like the media itself is incredibly feminist, or full of meaningful character interactions between anyone, regardless of genders, it’s just not good at it and not really trying to be. But I will say that at large, the fandom does seem to prioritize m/m relationships, platonic or romantic, over female characters existences, their relationships to men, and fuck off if you think they care about relationships between women.

I do have a separate post coming about the lack of interactions between women in the media itself, but that’s for another day

so i have the scenario in my head where. leon and chris are dating. and chris gets a call from leon which is kinda weird cuz he only really calls for emergencies? and when chris picks up leon is just hurriedly saying “we need to break up its not working im sorry” and chris is so confused and trying to talk to him and ask what’s going on but it’s clear leon isn’t really paying attention and then chris hears ada’s voice in the background and he just. hangs up. leon cares enough about chris to not want to cheat on him but he’ll still choose ada over him every time even though he barely sees her and chris has been a million times more present and kind to him. been thinking a lot about aeon and unrequited chreon cuz of the comic im making lmao

How I feel about this character: 

Love him! I'm pretty sure he's my favorite character Ever. I think a big part of that is how he's a pretty tragic character. (And the fact he's steering into morally grey territory in RE8)

All the people I ship romantically with this character: 

Mainly i ship Chrisker (Wesker) and Nivanfield (Piers), sometimes steer into Winterfield (Ethan) but I'm pretty much willing to read anything other than Chreon (Leon) and Valenfield (Jill)!

My non-romantic OTP for this character: 

I'm not quite sure what this means? Dunno if this is what they mean but I'm answering this as "Strong feelings of completely platonic love towards eachother".

Definitely Chris and Jill! I really love seeing them interact as close friends, which we def don't see enough of in canon.

My unpopular opinion about this character: 

I don't really browse just character tags, mainly just ship tags or artists I'm familiar with, so I don't have a clue whats considered unpopular or not so I'm just sharing one random opinion I think(?) could be unpopular.

I don't think he smokes that much. I see it as more of a "under extreme circumstances" rather than a habit. ( I really don't think he could punch boulders in a volcano if he had lung cancer for one, and I see him as more of an alcoholic than smoker)

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:

Probably the addressing of his trauma. We really need more of that.

Hmm, I don't think I have any other headcanons engrained so heavily into his character than this; I heavily hc him as gay. Not bisexual but just gay. I love the way that can be brought into many aspects of his story (Like his military background for example) (Also love a transmasc Chris but I think thats more self projection than fitting into canon)

So I had fun combining my two new loves: Task Force 141 and their allies are experts in counteracting terrorism, but when BOWs and a new brand of bioterrorism enter the scene, they find themselves scrambling to adapt and learn. They start working with the BSAA and the DSO. Also, I just want to see Price bumbling over interactions with Jill and everyone reacting to Leon’s….everything.

So i have a rather specific question. Seeing as you multi ship, i wanted to ask how do you personally do it? I ask because i feel like there's this sort of invalidation when it comes to shipping one character with more than one person you see they'd have a significant and intimate relationship.

For example i ship Leon with Ashley because of how i experienced the game and connected with them, but also because your analysis here about them provided some great insights and a very interesting perspective that i hadn't thought about before. The thing is though, i also wanna ship Leon with other characters but i always feel like I'd be missing something or doing something wrong because it's like there's some sort of insecurity that lies and i hate it. Bad.

So how do you do it? Mind sharing some advice because I'd really appreciate it. Again, sorry because the question is really specific 🙏

I imagine Leon's affection less like a pie chart and more like a timeline.

And then, over in the OG timeline, you've also got:

So, if, for you, it's like, "It makes me feel like I'm making him unfaithful" -- well, no, actually, because these are all happening at different times. Luis overlaps with Ashley, but the whole point of that relationship is that Luis has to die for it to become significant in the first place. And Jill overlaps with Chris in OG, but OG Leon is also kind of a whore, so like ??? LMAO

Like, when I'm thinking of metaltango, it doesn't conflict with my eagleone thoughts because... Leon and Ashley haven't met yet. She's not part of the equation. I'm not looking at that period of Leon's life. And even when I'm looking at Leon and Krauser's interactions during RE4make, I know that the love is already lost. metaltango is, at its core, a story about things having fallen apart.

Like shipping both cleon and chreon probably seems weird because Leon's just going down the family tree, but -- at the time that I ship him with Claire, he doesn't even know Chris yet. Never met the man, never had a conversation. And by the time Chris does come into Leon's life as having been significant, Claire has really faded into the background.

All of these relationships make Leon who he is. There is no good faith argument that you can make to say that Ashley is more significant to Leon than Chris, or that Chris is more significant to Leon than Krauser. He needs all three of them. He just needs them at different points of his life for different reasons.

Ashley is a canonical romance. However comma, she is not more important than Krauser, who picked Leon up from his absolute lowest point and supported him for years when he had no one else and didn't even believe in himself. On the flipside, he's also not more important than her, who actually healed all of those wounds that Krauser only just kept closed and prevented from bleeding out. And neither of them are more important than Chris, who has to pick up the pieces when both Krauser and Ashley are gone.

And that's what's really at the heart of multishipping. It's not about the ships, per se -- it's about the character. I focus on Leon as a character, and I see the people and events that are significant to his growth -- and because I can see that, I can very easily see how he could get romantic and/or sexual feels for any one of these characters.

I like Chreon because behind the scenes, they make sense together. Just because I can use canon parts of the story and characters to piece that ship together, does not mean I can pass Chreon off as canon. Capcom will eat their shit before that happens. They'd eat their shit before positively portraying any sort of lgbt+ character, nevermind the main protagonists. My point, just because fanon is inspired or theorised according to the real script, does not mean it's a good idea to push ANY personal opinion as law according to text. Why? Because people deserve to have narrative facts and unbiased analysis before making up their own minds. Backgrounds matter, especially in modern fandom where artists and writers go so hard. People need to accept the reality that everything they personally like doesn't mean it's the "most true" or what the fuck ever. It's exactly how childlike ship wars happen. How wildly mischaracterised opinions happen, which results in a hoard of people not understanding the well written nuance in new material. It's so annoying.

Is it okay to dislike and disagree with the road taken in canon? Of course, I do that often lmfao. I won't however try to twist and morph a different and inaccurate perspective of a scene and force others to agree with me. It's all so stupid anti-intellectual. I don't know why people think you're wrong here and that's coming from someone that doesn't always agree with you. Idk, this fanbase hates nuance.

I hope you do disagree with me sometimes. I hope everyone does. Fandom should be a community effort, not one person (or one group of people) preaching at the masses. The only thing I ever ask of people is "show your work."

That's what the Adam Benford truthers couldn't do. I asked them to show their work, and they couldn't, and then they disappeared -- but that shit is still being spread around the fandom, and it's still up on the wiki, because people's egos are wrapped up in having the rest of the fandom think that their opinions/interpretations are canon.

you're my lover is just straight up Nivannedy fluff and sweetness :)

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Haven't yet, thankfully!

9. Do you write smut? If so, which kind?

Sometimes 😭 usually it's more of a plot relevant thing than anything else, because smut isn't always my jam--but there are exceptions!! I'm writing a crack ship re5 thing asjdjds and sometimes I do like writing scenes that involve a little sexy time, but I don't think I'd ever write it as a standalone pwp sort of thing haha

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest crossover you’ve ever written?

No...? I mean, I have a Blade Runner au on the backburner of my infinite stove, but I've never put different characters together in a true crossover. Wrote the beginning of an Eragon + Percy Jackson + something I can't remember, when I was in like. 7th grade? But that's long gone and nothing ever came of it asdjdjs

Thought about it! It hasn't happened haha, but I'm open to the idea

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

I'll be honest... ships are kind of cute adorable plot devices to me. I don't really have a favorite per se, but I do tend to prefer Chreon, Metaltango, and Nivannedy! I like Clairejill and I'm pretty invested in Ada/Hunnigan right now hehe but none of them really stands out as the OTP, y'know?

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Not sure! I tend to jump around and abandon and revive things a lot, so it's honestly just up in the air. I'm loath to put one on the chopping block, but I have my doubts about this one (OG!) re4 fic where Leon passes out during the cabin fight

16. What are your writing strengths?

I've been told that I have a very visceral writing style by several people, and I do often get compliments on how well I've made something feel real/captured a specific feeling! Which is a huge compliment you guys are so nice 🥺 and I do like to think that I'm good at descriptive writing!! I see things very clearly in my head and it's gratifying to know I'm getting it across fully :)

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I tend to go at it without figuring out where I'm going, first. Plots are held together with a dab of white glue and some fraying string, and I often worry that I'm not putting scenes together coherently. I can do all the technical stuff just fine, but I really struggle with pacing and character motivations and foreshadowing and background etc, which I think is why I tend to write shorter fics!

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

It's rarely worth it, unless there's some sort of narrative significance or I get to use my Latin knowledge for some silly villain 😭
