I will take any and every excuse to talk about my pet rats!!! They are hands down one of my fav pets I've ever had. We had 4 - mist, raven, lightning, and Naomi. It was wild how different their personalities were - mist and raven were both suuuuuper treat motivated and enjoyed learning tricks and riding around on my shoulders, lightning was an escape artist and a scardy cat, and Naomi was a chotchy old woman(she was a rescue though, and was already 3 when we got her)
Rats are relatively easy to care for, especially if you litter box train them! Ours were litter trained.... mostly. Shavings for the cage add up pretty quickly, so we got reusable/washable bedding for the cage. Rats also need significantly larger cages than hamsters and mice, which meant ours loved mostly in the spare room. They are also giant escape artists. On my god can they worm their way through anything. We had to add metal tape to the plastic parts of our cage because the rats kept chewing through it and roaming the house. Luckily they always came back tho lol
Ahhh good memories :] lmk if there's anything else you want to know, I'm delighted to share!!

Reading02 Show me the code
Entering in the Computer Science Industry can be difficult.  We, as programmers, pride ourselves on being a meritocracy,  allowing for others regardless of faith, creed, race, gender, sex, orientation, to have hiring based upon skills alone.  In real life, things are not nearly as crystal clear as we have hoped.  Things are messy, and as easy as it is for us to talk in absolutes.  If the hiring process truly is about hiring the best of the best, then it is likely to potentially harm more minorities.  This is well explained in the “We hire the best, just like everyone else” article.

^Me sending my resumes in to companies
Here we see a couple of problem with only hiring people who are the “best of the best”.  this first things is every company cannot hire the best of the best.  the demographic of the best is not large enough.  Not everyone can be the best.  so if a company is trying to hire only the nest of the best. The best of the nest in the NBA right now is Lebron James.  but the most successful team right now is the golden states warriors.  Why?

Chotchy supreme himself
It is because the Golden State warriors organically drafted and developed players that all work together in their roles.  Warriors didn’t try to only get the best of the best they looked to develop role players, and they were greatly successful because of it.  Now it can be debated whether this analogy still holds now that KD is with the warriors, or whether the Cavs get credit for drafting Kyrie and Lebron, or whether Kyrie’s trade throws a wrench into this analogy (where was I going again?)
I also find the trend of hiring “people like us” in the industry disturbing, highlighting unconscious bias in the industry.  This is especially disturbing considering the goals of our industry trying to be a meritocracy, and providing advantages to certain candidates rather than others, instead of a true meritocracy being in effect.
This is all of course, a balancing act. hiring a perfect team is easier said than done, and taking time to develop talent can be risky.  But if you want to beat the golden state warriors, its at least an option to consider
