I don't know if it's the best, but PIXY's new album, Chosen Karma, is definitely the release I respect the most from this year so far.

Before I listened to the full album, I watched the MV for Karma. As a result, I was confused when I reached track 2, Flip a coin. It sounded similar and had the same hook I remembered from Karma, but Karma was the next track. I moved on thinking it was a labelling issue with Spotify but then we got to the next track and I discovered that there was nothing wrong. Flip a coin and Karma are essentially just alternate versions of each other. The verses and instrumental vary in places but the hook is the same for both songs. That's when I realised that they are meant to be two sides of the same coin!

That's so clever! It's certainly way beyond anything that any other group would attempt, even groups I like even more such as Loona or Dreamcatcher.

 A probably useless song-by-song review from my first-listen of ‘Chosen Karma’ by Pixy <3

Whisper - It’s a cute song, but nothing really sticks out to me. Dia’s vocals are super sweet though, she’s the most recognizable by far.

Karma - The intro is really fun, I love how they say Pixy lol. The pre-chorus is really nice, Dia and Dajeong (I’m pretty sure it was Dajeong)’s voices go super well with the part. The chorus is fun, too, it doesn’t seem too out of place. Rinji’s line after the chorus is everything - ‘Carved in your memories, my silhouette. They all wonder who I am.’ - and it probably is to do with their lore, but it makes me thing about all the people who only were introduced for her when Pixy’s channel uploaded her dance cover. DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON LOLA’S ‘SOSOSOS’ LINE, I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I also like the callback to Villain before the chorus. The countdown is super cool, but the part after feels so empty? That’s the only part of the song that I actually don’t actually like.

Hide & Seek - I do really like this song, it has my favourite parts from the title track, but I think I prefer Karma’s chorus. (NOTE: For anyone who doesn’t know, Karma is a mashup of Flipping a Coin and Hide & Seek, so both songs have parts that aren’t included in the title track) The bridge is heavenly and the rap actually suits the song. It does however have my leave favourite part of Karma, which kind of means I don’t like it as much as I could.

Falling: Dia’s vocals are super cool, this is definitely my favourite b-side from the album. I like the verses more than the chorus, but the post chorus is super nice to listen to. Dajeong’s high note was nice as well.

Flip a Coin - WHY WAS MORE OF THIS NOT IN KARMA. Right from the opening it’s haunting, and the pre-chorus??? INSANITY. The chorus suits this so much more than Karma. The rap, too??? Lola and Rinji make a great rap duo. The ending isn’t perfect, but I like it so much more than what was put in Karma. This is 100% my favourite song on the album.

So, as has been clear for a while on this blog, I bought baldurs gate 3 in January of this year, after playing for a few days and falling completely in love with the game, I insisted my wife (the lovely hilarious beautiful etc etc @the-faultofdaedalus) also buy bg3 so that she can experience it and we can play together. (let it be known: we HAVE gone through the entire time at LEAST once before)

today, we were going back and forth between playing bg3 and watching shows the other hasn't seen before, recently I decided that I should show her a TV show that was near and dear to me in my childhood: My Name Is Earl.

having baldurs gate fresh on our minds whilst watching the show led us to making the joke (and. it was a joke, we've even made similar jokes about other shows such as Leverage before) that if Earl Hickey was a DND character, he would be a Paladin.

That is all context for what you are all about to see:

Earl is an oath of devotion paladin, but only because oath of redemption isn't available, meanwhile we only just played through the prologue, so Randys subclass hasn't been decided just yet.

We're not sure yet if this is just the DND versions of earl and randy or if they've been isekaied to faerun. either option is hilarious, so we'll probably just go back and forth between which one.

Well, anyway...

well, that was me. Every time something good happened to me, something bad was always waiting around the corner: karma

That's when I realized that I had to change.

just thinking, yet again, about how terrible and awful anya's death was.

thinking about the parallel of her last apocalypse vs her first apocalypse... how in season 3, she ran away and saved herself, yeah, vs season 7, where she made a commitment to stay and join the fight. there could have been a line to draw there, maybe, to justify this as a trajectory towards her dying for a worthy cause - except that chosen has nothing new to say about anya that hasn't already been said before.

the THING IS.... anya has already committed to fighting alongside the scoobies. she's pretty much been committed (ish) since she returned in s4. in s5, she literally fought a god with them. she's in the thick of it. sure, she makes remarks about running away, but her actions speak louder: again and again, she stays.

not only that, but by the end of the show, anya has already sacrificed herself - she was willing to die in selfless to reverse her wish granted. it was such an emotional scene that, to me, whether she lived or died in that moment wasn't actually the most important bit. the most important bit was that she took responsibility for the harm that she'd caused. in that moment, she took a look at her life's journey and decided that it was fair that her own life be traded to right her wrongs. she was ready to do that.

i think that selfless would have been more impactful if anya had survived the show, truly. imagine if she'd had the chance to explore the grief and guilt she felt in regards to hallie's death! d'hoffryn sparing anya and sacrificing hallie was meant as a punishment. imagine if she'd had to live with that the way that angel and spike-with-a-soul have to live knowing what they've done... how they have to feel that pain and Keep Going Anyway. but anya's never given the chance. god, we had a third demon character in the MAIN CAST who caused chaos for centuries and then reconnected with her humanity in such a wonderful way, except she was NEVER given the care and attention that the narrative gave angel+spike, and i will never not be salty about it.

in the end, her death feels pointless, and random, and the fact that we never got to see her loved ones grieve for her and celebrate her life on-screen just kills me.
