The theme of these ESPN prelims thus far has been up and coming contender beats long standing high ranked opponent on the down slide, but not in a super impressive fashion. Gamrot over RDA and Phillips over Munhoz.
Guess we'll see if the pattern holds for Maycee Barber against former title challenger Katlyn Cerminara (formerly Chookagian) and Jailton Almeida against Curtis Blaydes.

THIS is a really interesting fight BUT I don’t know why they wouldn’t consider doing this at 135 lbs given that both have fought at that weight.

Cynthia Calvillo, Katlyn Chookagian Earn Key Victories At UFC 210

Competing for the second time in a five-week span, strawweight rising star Cynthia Calvillo earned another big victory tonight at UFC 210: “Cormier vs Johnson 2” in Brooklyn, New York. Calvillo submitted Pearl Gonzalez in the third round of a featured matchup on tonight’s pay-per-view main card.
Calvillo, who won her Octagon debut at UFC 209 this past month, impressed onlookers with her slick ground game en route to victory tonight. Earlier on the card, Katlyn “Blonde Fighter” Chookagian narrowly edged out Mexican standout Irene Aldana in a closely-contested bantamweight showdown.
Calvillo (5-0-0) got the better of the striking exchanges in round one by scoring with quick combinations and leg kicks. Gonzalez (6-2-0) walked her opponent down and landed single strikes that led to a clinch against the cage, but Calvillo countered with knees to the body and she trapped Gonzalez in a tight triangle choke on the ground just before time expired.
The second round began with a much more aggressive Gonzalez pressing forward with power punches. Calvillo kept her at bay with leg kicks and continued to score with quick flurries of punches. Gonzalez eventually secured a takedown into mount that allowed her to transition to an armbar, but Calvillo Read the rest at: MMARising.com

Tracy Cortez takes UD over Jasmine Jasudavicius in war!
Cortez spent the last 16 months working on her striking cause she took it to a whole other level since the last time we saw her. Granted, Jasudavicius is there to be hit as her game seems to be a mix of Karolina Kowlkiewicz and Meisha Tate but that was still worlds better than the last time we saw her. Great use of the 2-3 and 3-2 as JJ walked into range behind her jab. Had a lot of pop on that left hook which is a great sign moving forward.
Jasudavicius came alive a bit in the 2nd - scored a nice slapping head kick off as Cortez tried to exit an exchange. Started throwing those tall-girl stepping knees off of breaks and at the end of combos. And was able to push Cortez to the fence and take her down, but Cortez was still landing throughout with the left hook. Carried that in to the third round and just went to town with the boxing. The leg kicks were there early but JJ was countering over the top because she's aggressive and long and Cortez was throwing them without set up.
Moving backwards is always risky gambit as a developing striker but this was a perfect test for Cortez in her return. Great showing. Instantly gets herself back into the picture of interesting fighters at the top of 125lbs. A fight with a Maycee Barber, Lauren Murphy, or Katlyn Chookagian would be neat.

Rise of Manon Fiorot
There is a new crop of contenders at women's flyweight and Manon Fiorot (10-1) is one of the ones making big waves. The Frenchwoman is 5-0 in her run in the UFC beating names such as Katlyn Chookagian, Jennifer Maia, and Mayra Bueno Silva along the way. That's 2 former title challengers and the woman who just submitted Holly Holm up at bantamweight. Not bad for someone so young in their career.
She's got an opportunity to add a former champion on to that list as well. Fiorot will face off with former UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas (11-5) in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night Paris this Saturday (Sept. 2).

Amanda Ribas takes UD over Viviane Araujo.
A much needed win for RIbas’ hopes at 125lbs! Coming off that Chookagian fight where I thought Ribas really would have won if she was a bit more active, this was a good performance. She managed to hurt Araujo in that second round with what I think was a jab. Couldn’t finish as she kept swimming for that arm triangle but we saw her much more comfortable on the feet throwing. She really tired Araujo out with that 2nd round of grappling. Still doing the stuff that got her KOed by Marina but got the win regardless.
