Welcome to this blog best places to visit in Ooty in 2 days. I was delighted the moment I embarked on my expedition to Ooty. It started with a journey on the illustrious Nilgiri Mountain Railway, which is commonly known as the Ooty Toy train.

Toy train to Ooty

The Toy train runs from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor and covers 46 km in 5 hours. Initially, the Toy Train was pulled by a steam engine but now a diesel engine is used for the purpose. The train is operated by the Southern Railway and is the only operational Rack Railway in the country. It has a braking system inbuilt in the rail tracks which makes it unique. This braking system protects train from reverse movement on steep climb or a free fall on slopes.

The train passes through the picturesque Nilgiri Mountains and lush green forest. I was getting something new to see every 100 meters of travel. The entire area was full of green trees with the casual appearance of tea plantations or a hamlet hanging on the hill slopes.

The scenery from the train’s window was so beautiful that I desired the journey could have continued for a couple of more hours. The only noise I was able to hear in the valley was coming from my train’s engine. Every thing else in the surrounding was composed and content.

I was casually browsing through the toy train schedule and was surprised to see that the train takes 4 hrs 50 min to reach Ooty from Mettupalayam. However, the return journey from Ooty takes only 3 hrs 35 min. Then I realized that it is because of the great altitude of the Nilgiri Mountains that makes the trek more demanding for the trains to climb.

Once at the destination, I headed straight to the hotel room to dump my baggage, catch some refreshments, and quickly move around the city. The city is so beautiful and merely walking on the street is delightful. My first point of attraction was the Botanical Garden.

The Garden has a variety of flower and plants. It is spread across 55 acres and is divided into five sections such as Italian Garden, Fern House, Lower Garden, Nursery, and a Conservatory. This garden is a must-visit point of attraction for plant and flower enthusiasts.

St Stephens Church

St. Stephan Church is famous for its architectural beauty and immense religious importance. The church has equally beautiful interiors. It is said that the timber used in the church was brought from Srinangapatna, which is 140 km away from Ooty.

Doddabetta-highlight of places to visit in Ooty in October 2 days

Doddabetta Mountain is beautiful and the highest peak in the Nilgiri Mountains. It has an observatory at the top with two telescopes available for the public. One can have magnificent views of hills, plantations, forests, tea gardens, and small hamlets from this tower.

Wax World (Art Gallery and Museum)-Funtime for Kids in palces to visit in Ooty in 2 days

If you have spare time and have had enough of natural beauty throughout the day, you may visit Wax World in Vannarapettai on Kotagiti Road. It is an art gallery and museum. Operation timing is 9:30 am to 7:30 pm and is open on all seven days. It also has beautifully carved wax statues of prominent figures.

Ooty is also famous for authentic homemade chocolates. I saw a wide variety of chocolates from dark chocolates to strawberry flavored ones, from coconut to mango flavors.

Pykara waterfall and Lake

Pykara River creates Pykara fall, which converts into Pykara Lake at a short distance from the waterfall. It is situated in the north of Oort and amidst the green shola forest. This lake is the result of a dam built on the Pykara River for power generation. Boating is allowed in this beautiful lake.

My visit to the best place around Ooty

Now comes the most memorable part of my trip to Ooty. The Avalanche Lake. The Lake has derived its name from a landslide that occurred in 1823. The Lake was formed because of that avalanche and is 28 km away from the City.

I started early from my hotel room and was out of town in barely after 15 minutes of drive. Soon I was on a road amid beautiful hilly terrain. The moment I left the city, tea vegetation started following my car on both sides of the road. There were settlements seen occasionally with colorful homes on the slopes of hills like below.

This gave an indication that if the approach to Avalanche Lake is so striking then the destination must be extraordinarily beautiful. I got to a forest department checkpoint a few km away from the Lake. Vehicles are not allowed beyond this point as the Lake is situated deep inside the protected forest. The buses are available at fixed intervals and cost 200 INR per person and a Jeep is available for 2000 INR per trip. The jeep can comfortably accommodate six persons.

I boarded a bus with ten other tourists. The bus stopped after a few km for sightseeing. It was for visitors to take a few good photographs. You need to reverse below photograph 180 degree to see what my camera saw that day. 🙂

Avalanche Lake

The bus traveled leisurely for another 20 minutes. Finally, we reached the central reservoirs of The Avalanche Lake. The lake runs across hills for several kilometers. Therefore, it is vital to see it from the best perspective. I was mesmerized for a few seconds after I disembarked from the bus. I had never seen such a spectacular expanse of striking landscape ever in my life. The Lake looked incredible with blue sparkling water.

The Upper Bhawani Lake

Set amidst a magnificent setting and lush greenery, this lake is a delight for nature lovers. This is the most significant and beautiful location of the expansive Avalanche Lake. It is called the Upper Bhawani Lake. The island in the middle of the lake added splendor to the water body. However, it disappears during monsoon rain when the water level in the lake increases. So, one needs both, the clear sky and the island to experience and capture the real splendor of the Lake.

The upper Bhawani Lake is out of bounds for visitors. Therefore, one cannot go near the water body or touch and feel it as we can do in Nainital Lake or other lakes in the country. The vehicle would halt at this viewpoint barely for 20 minutes before returning to the forest check-post. Therefore, those 20 minutes were the most prized moment of my journey to Ooty.

Emerald Lake-Most beautiful among best places to visit in Ooty in 2 days.

Emerald Lake is situated in the silent valley between Avalanche Lake and the City. The name Emerald comes from the village located near the lake. This waterbody also has a dam that has created a huge water reservoir. Similar to the upper Bhawani Lake, this lake is also out of bounds for visitors. The beauty of the place needs to be admired from a distance only. The expanse of the lake is enormous and an individual cannot assess the real size or spread of the lake. We can only google and see satellite images to check the actual spread of the lake.

The Emerald Lake is famed for the scenic sunrise and sunset views. Good to see a variety of fish in the lake and birds around the place. The lake is surrounded by tea gardens where visitors can buy unprocessed tealeaves.

I choose to return via Coimbatore Airport. This called for a three-hour road trip from Ooty to Coimbatore. It was equally a great experience as the road again took me to Nilgiri Mountains, tea plantations, and dense forests. En-route this temple on the right side of the road surprised me with its unique Shiva Linga shape, so I got down from my vehicle carefully holding my camera.

My Mysore to Ooty Travel: A Fascinating Experience

Ootacamund or Ooty is a major tourist destination in India. The country has always been known in India as the "Queen of Hills Stations". It is characterized by natural beauty and lush forests. Ooty is a great place to relax in a healthy climate with the Nilgiri Mountains and many other attractions as a backdrop. Everyone, regardless of age, should make the most of this place. On a long weekend in October, with my two daughters and wife, we planned a trip from Bangalore to Mysore for the Dussehra festival. Day 1 

Bandipur Forest

We followed the same, and post-lunch we boarded in a Gypsy vehicle at 3 pm, which was scheduled for an evening safari (Morning safari at 6:30 am). 

During the journey, we spotted the herd of elephants, red jungle fowl, different species of monkeys, wild mongoose, deer, wild boars, colourful birds, and luckily a leopard from faraway range, people with binoculars seemed to be had a lovely view. So, if you have one of them, never miss to carry up with you when you visit such places.  The tour lasted around 2 hours and 15 minutes. A must place to visit for kids and children, and without booking the Mysore to Ooty cab services, I feel it would be considerably tough to manage all the places. Day 2 

Mudumalai Forest

After a full-day stay at the Manisagudi resort, which is a destination for wildlife lovers, we went to the Mudumalai National Park. Mudumalai is a place where the tourism department offers many safaris such as road safaris, jungle trips, and elephant rides. We chose the elephant safari since my two kids wanted to experience a ride with a giant animal.

We also strolled across with a guide for bird watching who explained many of the wonders about colorful birds and migratory birds at certain times of the year. As we are not aware of the harsh sun in Mudumalai, travelers must bring sun caps, sunglasses, sun lotion, and umbrellas, as the climate changes much faster as time progress.

It was a more enjoyable experience. But, in my understanding, either choose one of the reserves, Bandipur or Mudumalai. In comparison, both are the best in their own way. If you like bird watching, choose Mudumalai. We opted both because we wanted to explore them and one of my colleagues suggested that bird sightseeing is the best in Mudumalai.  These places could not have been covered within two days if we had not booked Mysore to Ooty cab package. 

The Mudumalai Tiger Reserve has 266 bird species, including Bengal tiger, elephants, leopards, critically endangered Indian vultures, and more.

Day 3

The stay at Nilgiri was the best of these three days as it was bestowed with the bounteous beauty of nature with the rustling sound of the trees. Later, we never had much time left to visit Cairn hill en-route. So, our cab driver recommended that we can either visit Cairn hill or Needle Rock Viewpoint. We chose needle rock, and it was the right time we reached the spot to have an exquisite eagle-view of nature and surroundings. 

When traveling back to the hotel after the view and some photoshoots, we enquired the cab driver about the Cairn hill, he said it is the reserved forest site that is good for bird watching and jeep safaris. So, after discussing with my wife, we thought of never going there since we had already taken up those activities in Bandipur and Mudumalai.  

Day 4

We prepared for an early night's sleep on the third night of our hotel stay as our taxi driver suggested that we will be visiting lots of places the next day. We all took a morning bath, and our first stop after tea was the Doddabetta Peak which is, according to reviews, a great place to visit both in the morning and in the evening.  We set foot on the peak around 7:00 am when the sun was slowly rising. “Plans don’t happen easily if you had not booked a Mysore to Ooty cab sightseeing facility. You couldn’t reach Doddabetta peak so early.”

People often have a say about this peak that staying in Ooty without visiting Doddabetta is like eating ice cream without ice. After a good, tasty breakfast, we entered the Botanical Garden around 9 am. I thought to myself that booking a Mysore to Ooty cab package was a great success since the driver guided us well by taking us to the remarkable places at the appropriate time, as well as dropping us at a good restaurant.

It was the right time to get there as we were able to digest some of the idlis and vadas we had eaten, and it was a large garden to cover. We bought a map as a reference for a walk in the park. Around 11:35 am, we got into our taxi, and then the driver took us straight to the Ooty tea museum and factory (a ten-minute drive), which is a must-see for tea lovers. I am one of them who love to have tea any number of times a day, but my wife was a coffee lover, and there was some chatter among us. Without a taxi from Mysore to Ooty, it would have been quite complex to visit some of the places especially, the Tea Museum and factory, as there was a fewer number of buses to travel.

In the tea museum, we had an opportunity to learn a lot about the different types of tea leaves that are used around the world and about the history of tea in India. At the tea factory, we experienced and learned about tea processing such as cut, twist, and curl (CTC). You can also drink tea and admire the beautiful surroundings. You can buy different types of tea powders and other essentials like teacups and plates. They are also popular in selling fruit and nuts, honey, coffee, and milk chocolates with sugar-free varieties.

It was 2 pm when all our activities were completed in the Ooty tea museum. The driver suggested a quick lunch, and the South Indian meal was ready in the restaurant. In my experience, it would not have been much better without taxi services from Mysore to Ooty since there were many places to visit here.

Later, we had more than an hour and fifteen minutes journey to Dolphin’s nose with the opportunity to see lush green tea estates on the way. It is the place to observe the picturesque view of the hills, and the famous attraction here is a breathtaking view of Catherine Falls. You can enjoy the natural beauty of the mountains, which is 1550m from above sea level, and catch sight of a 180-degree scenic view. An excellent place to get out from daily chaos in your life, get calmness in your mind with picturesque scenes.

On the way back from Dolphin’s nose, our final destination for the day was Lamb’s rock, near Coonoor. Our cab driver’s plan was worth it as he took all the places at the right time. The journey from Bengaluru to Goa is exciting and is a must do road trip to take from Bengaluru. Traveling via Hubli is the most common choice and offers a number of detours which can be taken on the way. 6. Coorg

Coffee plantations, verdant hills and beautiful views will greet you. The route from Bengaluru to Coorg is packed with interesting de-tours right after crossing the outer-ring road. On your way, you can stop at Shivananasamudra, India’s second largest segmented Waterfall with scenic views and pleasant weather throughout the year, perfect for a romantic stroll! The Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary is a great place to observe multifarious species of birds and comprises of few islets of crocodile infested waters!

Approximate driving time: Six to seven hours

Pit stops: If you’re travelling with kids stop at Wonderla, an amusement park with over fifty dry and water rides! After which, near Bidadi Town is the Innovative Film City with entertainment centres including Louse Tussaud’s Wax Museum and Ripley’s Museum. For a quick highway treat, stop at Rasta Café in Ramnagaram or at Café Coffee Day in Maddur.

7. Coonoor

Known for its tea and spice plantations, grasslands and forest trails, Coonoor is the ideal destination for a road trip. You can enjoy curvy roads with various viewpoints to enjoy panoramic sights. If you opt to travel via Bandipur stop at the Himvad Gopalswamy Betta, a hill enveloped with fog throughout the year perfect for a small trek. Wildlife enthusiasts can explore Bandipur National Park to spot Mysore Royal Tigers!

Distance: 290 km

Approximate driving time: Seven and a half hours

Pit stops: For a scrumptious lunch you can stop at Saravana Bhavan in Gudalur. On the way, you will find multiple tea stalls where you can enjoy hot tea along with Maggi! Being a popular route, there are various petrol pumps and clean washrooms along the way.

8. Nandi Hills

For bikers, Bheemeshwari is the perfect destination to bike to! The 60-kilometer journey boasts of well-kept roads and multiple rest-stops. Bikers can enjoy curving hill roads and rugged terrains to navigate through. As you bike, the gradient of the slopes gets steeper making the ride more challenging!

Distance: 60 km

Approximate biking time: Four hours approximately

Pit stops: A popular route, there are various tea stalls on the way along with clean washrooms. You can stop at Kodigehalli to buy drinks for an energy boost before you ride on.

9. Agumbe

Enjoy a journey with an abundance of coffee plantations and cardamom estates with the aroma of coffee wafting through the car. The lush tropical landscape of the hills offers scenic views throughout the drive. Throughout the journey, the landscapes change from seasides to the Western Ghats ideal for photographers to capture breath-taking views.

Distance: 380 km

Approximate driving time: Seven to eight hours

Pit stops: There are numerous petrol pumps and dhabas on the way to enjoy delicious warm paranthas with white butter!

10. Hassan

A drive to Hassan will give you a quick glimpse of village life as you travel on one of Bengaluru’s best highways (NH 48). As you drive towards Bellur, there are several nurseries on the way with various plantations, stop and take some snaps! On your way, visit Shravanbelagola, the most popular pilgrimage sites for Jains with one of the tallest monolithic statues.

Distance: 185 km

Approximate driving time: Three to four hours

Pit stops: For a lunch break you can stop at Swathi Delicacy for north Indian food. On the way, there are various petrol pumps and shops open 24/7 for snacks to munch on the way.

Munnar is known for a lot of things but the most prominent one is being the birthplace of the Neelakurinji flowers which blooms once every 12 years. And when it does, the hills and peaks take another colour altogether with purple and pink blossoms growing altogether. Munnar holds attractions like Anamudi Peak, Nyayamkad Falls, Thoovanam Falls and more. While you are it, do buy chocolates and spices – those are the best souvenirs, representing Munnar.

 4. Coorg :

Situated on the Western Ghats, Coorg is one of the top destinations when you ask people in the city what’s a good getaway from the city during the weekends. The largest producer of coffee in India, Coorg can be visited in the months from October through May. You would not want to miss out on going for a trip around the “Scotland of India” now, would you? Take in the huge variety of flora and fauna with wildlife sanctuaries like Talacauvery, Nagarhole National Park, Brahmagiri Sanctuary, and Pushpagiri Hills. Together these two branches form one of the largest waterfalls in India known as the Shivanasamudra Falls. Take a coracle ride to the mouth of the falls to be amazed by its majestic nature. Because of the current in the falls, people are not permitted to swim in the waters so I would suggest not be smart and break the rules. This waterfall is the supplier of the energy generated in Asia’s first hydroelectric plant. Don’t miss the epic waterfalls – I assure you will make a memory of a lifetime with this trip.
