Helloooo I apologize if you talked about this before, but since they seem to be the most “controversial” songs muses-wise, who do you think is/are the muse/muses behind Peter, The Black Dog, and Chloe & friends?
OOOOH YESS TEA TIME
I'll start with saying that the TTPD prologue is actually a key to understand what was going on. she says that she tried to make it work with Joe, but in the end it wasn't salvageable. and just after she had torn the whole sky down, ready to savor her newfound freedom, she was out of the oven and into the microwave, out of the slammer and into a tidal wave. Matty returns in her life, promises to save her, and then ghosts.
The thing is, I believe that she had Matty at the back of her mind, one day they were gonna find the right circumstances to be together - and then they did and it felt like destiny. To me, this is what Peter is about: one day he was going to grow up and come and find her, many lyrics seem to be referencing him and their story ("Are you still a mind reader? / A natural scene stealer" and "And I won't confess that I waited"), but then he turned out to be a cheat, and it broke everything she thought she knew throughout the years. It wasn’t just the loss of him ad a person, it was also the life she had let herself dream of. She's mourning the safety net she'd had over the years, because there wasn’t anyone waiting anymore.
I believe The Black Dog to be for Matty, I don't believe it's that one pub in London, but the one in Cork, Ireland where the 1975 went shortly after Matty and Taylor broke up. The Starting Line is one of Matty's favourite bands (he covered one of their songs in the Philippines, after that show he took a 20-hour flight to return to the US in time for Taylor's Nashville show... the one where she mouthed "you know who you are, this is for you". mess...). also do we really believe that Joe is a type a guy that jumps up to sing in a bar if he hears a song? 😭 i believe, based on the video that Jack shared and the candids from that day, that she recorded it on June 22nd.
As for Chloe et al, to me this is canon.
