Kingfisher is very unsure about Chiroh right now. She’s definitely very interested, but she’s not confident about her own place in Chiroh’s eyes, and that’s giving her a hard time with acting on anything. She’s worried that Chiroh sees her as inferior or lacking in the competence required for the sort of autonomy you’d have to have to form a relationship, and she’s also very determined to somehow not disrespect Chiroh’s declaration that she needs space and it’s happening, but at the same time prove herself as worth a kismesis even if Chiroh doesn’t want to be that kismesis.

Bellamy: A huge part of her character /is/ dealing with terrible situations that she has little to no influence on.

Bellamy: Chiroh is an interesting case there because Chiroh doesn't /like/ people giving in and deluding themselves the way Kingfisher does, and talking to and treating Kingfisher the way she does served to draw Fisher out of it a little bit - but then the way things went down when Kingfisher kissed Chiroh also served to grind in the 'you can try but it won't matter' lesson more, as well.

Bellamy: Which is why Kingfisher went from kissing Chiroh first and arguing for her to stay to putting her hands up and going 'fine, I will just resign myself to behave as I am properly supposed to,' because that's what she usually does and her short foray into exceptional willfulness backfired pretty badly.

Moth: understandable! if also a missed chance for growth. or - im not actually sure how good it would be for her to get back into that? ofc its terrible not to confront things, but thats usually bc you cant change them if you dont, and this is def a survival mechanism that she needs

Bellamy: Yeah, it is! I think it's fun because really that IS a lot of the issue - it's not healthy and it's not something that people who care about her might like seeing in her, but it's what she found that WORKS in her current situation, and while on the one hand it's really shitty for her, on the other hand it's also not fair to try and rip that away from her without giving her an alternative or considering how she might feel about it rather than the instinctive though someone might have of 'that's unhealthy she should stop.' (Not that anyone is doing so to that extreme.)

Bellamy: And in many ways it also isn't working so well, either - she needs to find a balance, since she can't find a way out.

Moth: yeah, i think that giving of an alternative is whats important. and i know she has some contacts, but she rly sounds like she could use some friends to fall back on when things get bad. a support system, i guess!

Bellamy: Yes, definitely! She really only talks to Chiroh, who is not a viable emotional support both with their current situation and the general nature of their relationship, and the TRFACT, who are better but also are people she respects and wants to impress. She went to them for advice on the romantic mess with Chiroh but that really required a minimal level of 'I really, really don't know what to do' from her combined with a sufficient degree of certainty that she wasn't entirely in the wrong - otherwise she wouldn't have, because how people see her is a very important thing to her.

Bellamy: (She can't control much else about her life, after all, and she also uses maintaining a respectable impression as compensation for the unacknowledged fact that she hates her situation.)

So I got thinking about that one kiss meme...

You yelp, because Chiroh’s just hitched your hip closer, and you’re suddenly remembering the fact that you’ve never actually kissed anyone before. You’ve seen a lot of kissing, mostly in romcoms, but you can’t quite remember how most of it goes because the way she’s pressed against your front is altogether rather distressingly distracting - but, oh, Chiroh’s got the smarmiest look on her face and you can tell she’s laughing at you even if she’s not quite voicing it - yet - so you figure, fuck it, fuck kissing, and lean forward to sink your teeth into her bottom lip instead.

You press your thumb down just hard enough that she can feel it where her pulse is beating against her throat, spiteful. Chiroh sparks and bites back, twice the nip that you gave her, and suddenly it doesn’t really matter that you’ve never done this before because you’re much too busy figuring out the best way to make her do that again. You never spark unless you mean to - hah!

You suppose there is something to this whole kissing thing.

It doesn’t take long to make it far enough away that you no longer feel the itch of escape behind your shoulderblades, and when you do, you turn and lay one right on Chiroh’s cheek.

“I fuckin LOVE you,” you declare, “Let’s get FRONDFASTED. Slice up our fronds and TRADE BLOOD. Take a lock of my hair for DARK RITUALS. For reals, tho, gal, you are officially the literal best EVER, and if I ever see that goddamn purple spawn of a clown-fucking terror, I’m gonna rip her a new breathing hole with my TEETH!”

You’re snarling by the time you finish, good mood nearly dissipated, before the relief ebbs back in. More than relief, though, you just really need a goddamn bottle of water.
