Driverless vehicles to lift battery swapping
Visitors check out NIO charging piles during an international automobile expo in Changchun, Jilin province, in July. The company aims to build 1,000 battery swapping stations in China in 2023, bringing the total number to 2,300 by this year-end.
A boom in autonomous vehicles is expected to usher in fresh development opportunities for the battery swapping sector in China, throwing open a billion-dollar market in energy storage.
In May, Baidu unveiled its sixth-generation robotaxi services in Wuhan, Hubei province, with the autonomous vehicles operating using a battery swapping system, utilizing standardized battery packs and smart battery swapping stations from a subsidiary of GCL Energy Technology Co Ltd.
Each vehicle autonomously schedules visits to these stations based on service status, location data, and battery levels, completing a rapid battery swap upon arrival to maximize operational efficiency.
The rapid commercialization and deployment of autonomous ride-hailing and taxi services are expected to drive demand for battery swapping, CITIC Securities said in a report.
This method offers advantages such as unmanned operation, high efficiency and lower costs from reduced human workforce, and is particularly suited for fixed routes and scenarios without human intervention.
CITIC Securities has forecast that the number of battery swapping stations will reach 27,500 by 2026, with a compound annual growth rate of 93 percent from 2022 to 2026, and the market size for battery swapping equipment is expected to reach 30.5 billion yuan ($4.2 billion).
Baidu said the decision to use battery swapping for its robotaxis stemmed from its full automation compared to the manual handling required for battery charging services, resulting in savings on labor costs.
Additionally, while recharging via a charging pole takes at least half an hour, swapping a battery only takes three minutes, saving valuable time that can be devoted to better driving services, thereby enhancing operational efficiency.
Lu Jiamin, chief automotive analyst at Cinda Securities, said: "Baidu's latest sixth-generation robotaxi has reduced vehicle costs by 60 percent compared to the fifth generation. Operating and service costs have also fallen by 30 percent and 80 percent, respectively."
Robotaxi operation service platform Ontime has estimated that a robotaxi's cost per kilometer will undercut human-driven ride-hailing services by 2026, signaling a gradual mainstreaming of robotaxi services.
Baidu hopes to achieve financial balance in Wuhan by the end of 2024 and overall profitability by 2025 for its robotaxi services.
Against this backdrop, key players in the driving and battery charging/swapping sectors have stepped up collaboration to tap the surging market.
Baidu has collaborated with GCL Energy Technology's subsidiary for battery packs and swapping stations. Shandong Weida Machinery supplies swapping station equipment and services to NIO. CATL has partnered with automobile makers and ride-hailing services such as JAC Group, Didi and BAIC Motor in the battery swapping field. Automobile companies such as the SAIC Motor and Geely have also made significant strides in this domain.
CITIC Securities anticipates robust growth of the battery swapping sector, driven by proactive efforts throughout the supply chain and promising prospects for battery swapping in taxis and heavy vehicles.

Hydrogel windows to lower the temperature in buildings
Hydrogel windows to lower the temperature in buildings
With global warming starting to take effect, the temperature can rise very high during the summer. But using air conditioning systems is not always practical with all the energy they consume. In Chinaresearchers have come up with a new idea for solve the problem of temperature increase in buildings. They replaced the window panes with special glass coated with hydrogel. This glass is capable of…

Staff Research Visit to China. For the last ten days, the Programme Leader of BA History of Art and Museum Studies has been travelling in China along with a colleague from Engineering (Fang Bin Guo) and the Postgraduate Co-ordinator of the postgraduate programmes in the School of Art and Design (Jon Spruce). The three have won funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Newton Fund (China) worth £250,000 to research the potential to convert former industrial sites in China into creative hubs. They travelled to Beijing, Wushan, Chongqing, Shenyang and Dalian visited many interesting factory sites that can be renovated to become arts venues and thereby enable employment. The Liverpool team are matched by a dedicated and strong group of partners in these Chinese sites and it was the first occasion when all the partners worked together in situ. Publications, a conference and detailed participatory research are now planned for the next two years. @ahrcpress @ljmuphoto @ljmuarts @ljmuwomeninengandtech @LJMUResearch #historyofart #chinaresearch #AHRC (at China) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpoS4-wlWzX/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ii26wobw511f

Lunar far side mission attests to China's space power
A Chinese flag is unfurled on June 4, by the lander of the Chang'e 6 probe on the far side of the moon. PROVIDED TO CHINA DAILY
China has yet again proved its spacefaring prowess with another successful moon landing, this time for the unprecedented Chang'e 6 lunar far side sample return mission.
Indeed, as I write this, the precious cargo of an anticipated 2 kilograms of moon rocks from the lunar far side has already started its long journey home, with the Chang'e 6 ascender having lifted off from the lunar surface on June 3 at 23:38 GMT. This is only two days since, with the support of the Queqiao 2 relay satellite, the lander and ascender combination successfully landed at a predetermined landing site in the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the far side of the moon, according to the China National Space Administration.

China’s First Deep-Sea Multi-Functional Scientific Research Vessel Docks In South China
China’s first multifunctional 104-meter-long archaeological and scientific research vessel for deep-sea exploration and the excavation of cultural relics was docked on Saturday in Nansha District of Guangzhou, located in south China’s Guangdong Province.
Displaced by almost 10,000 tons, China designed the multifunctional vessel independently.
In summer, it can perform deep-sea scientific investigation, cultural relic excavation, and scientific research in the polar sea areas, with bidirectional ice-breaking capability.
It can also accommodate 80 individuals and travel at a maximum speed of 16 knots for about 15,000 nautical miles.
The vessel’s construction began in June last year, with an investment of approximately 800 million yuan.

Scientists In China Create Most Powerful "Sound Laser" Ever Made
Scientists in China have created an unprecedentedly bright laser that shoots particles of sound instead of light. According to New Scientist, this is the most powerful "sound laser" yet. At the core of the device is a one-micrometre-long silica bead. Researchers from Hunan Normal University in China used two beams of light to levitate the bead and surround it with a reflective cavity. Unlike regular lasers, that emit light particles called photons, these machines release particle-like chunks of sounds called phonons.
