Congratulations 洪佩瑜 Pei-Yu Hung! =D

Saw this earlier on TaiwanPlus News twitter: Best New Artist goes to Pei-Yu Hung! This is her first award of the night. She’s nominated for 8 GMAs, the most among all nominees this year. She launched her career 10 years ago, but only released her 1st studio album in 2022.

Narrative Description of Student Performance

Benin Gardner did excellent work in this independent study.

In her initial proposal, Benin expressed a desire to: “investigate internal and outside perceptions of racial identity,” particularly “intersections of Chinese-American and black identity”; draw on aspects of Southern Gothic writing as a lens through which to explore “poetic voice and style” and “excavate a well of content in myself, emotionally and intellectually.” She has accomplished all this, and more. The formal inventiveness and thematic complexity of what she has created and explored in this independent study will serve her well as a foundation for Division III.

In addition to reading, critically analyzing, and discussing selected works of poetry and prose, Benin also attended readings and film screenings by visiting artists. Among the artists whose work Benin engaged with are: Simone White, Anne Carson, Diana Khoi Nguyen, Sun Yung Shin, Solmaz Sharif, Cauleen Smith, Terrance Hayes, Gregory Pardlo, Viviee Francis, A.E. Stallings, Bhanu Kapil, Julie Otsuka, and, closer to home, Frank Chin, and Elizabeth Chin.

Early conversations regarding the work of other poets—particularly Simone White and Anne Carson—and the formal strategies employed in their work informed her thinking about poetry and considerations of what a poem could be.

At mid-term, Benin noted, “I am starting to see language in a completely different light than I did before and am becoming acquainted with how much I don’t know, and how many preconceived notions of what a poem is meant to look like I have relied on in a lot of my writing.”

In the course of this independent study, she learned to become a closer reader of her own work and a more open and honest writer, willing to risk bringing more of herself and her concerns to the page. In the second half of the independent study, our conversations focused on the choices Benin was making within her poems—what to reveal, what to obscure, and why. This resulted in closer edits, many of which led to quite substantive revisions of the poems as she mulled the possible meanings and motivations in the work.

Benin’s expansions and revisions of the poems she generated, and her subsequent selection and sequencing of those poems, resulted in her final portfolio, Sun Through a Skylight Under Snow. In poems interspersed with photographs which, at times, hold a ghost echo of the text, questions of origin are approached via multiple lenses—lyric, mythic, gothic, nostalgic, futuristic, Marxist—and Los Angeles, particularly L.A.’s Chinatown, emerged as a site of convergence where family, self, childhood, and the Pacific are ever approaching and receding. A significant creative accomplishment, Sun Through a Skylight Under Snow is a testament to the strong, inspired leaps Benin made in this independent study, creatively and intellectually. She has much to be proud of.
