A-Z of Beer. Letter C

After some World Cup distractions, and lots of beer drinking opportunities i’ve now got round to looking at letter C.

CAMRA: Campaign for Real Ale. Formed on Tuesday 16th March 1971 in Kruger's Bar, Dunquin.  With the mission to protect, promote and preserve traditional British beer and pubs. http://www.camra.org.uk/

Carbonation: How gassy your beer is.  Usually comes from yeast giving of CO2 as a by-product or by force-carbonating with CO2, as is generally the case with keg beer.

Cask: A barrel shaped container for storing beer.  Traditionally these were made of wood with iron hoops but now usually metal.

Cask-Conditioning: Beer which completes it’s fermentation after leaving the brewery rather than at the brewery.  This will usually be in pub cellars to stay cool at around 13°C (48-56°F).

Chill Haze: The cloudiness that appears in beer when it drops to a certain temperature and disappears once the beer has warmed up.

Closed Fermentation: Where the fermentation process takes place in an airtight vat.  This minimises the risk of anything contaminating the brew. 

Cold-Conditioning: Slow conditioning of lagers within refrigerated tanks, usually 0-3°C (3-37°F) for around three months.

Crowns: The name for bottle caps before they are capped on to the bottles and so are only called caps once they’ve been used.
