Located on the southwestern coast of India, Kerala is the crown gem of India, and its cultural diversity will completely knock you out. In this article, we will show you the beauty of “gods own country” and the bougiest spots this beautiful state has to offer.
Kerala is a land of natural beauty and diverse traditions that have evolved over centuries. A complete haven for foodies – Keralan food
Every bite from a Sadhya (Keralan thali) is like an explosion of flavors in your mouth. If you visit Kerala and even 20 years down the lane, if you don’t remember anything: you will always remember the cuisine. The cuisine of this region features a variety of delectable dishes, including Keralan fish curry, Karimeen pollichathu, Fish moilee, Malabar Parotta, pumpkin and lentil curry, and Palada payasam. To enhance the dining experience, these dishes are typically served on a generous green banana leaf.
Serene backwaters
The backwater of Kerala can easily be defined as a labyrinth of tranquil lanes of water formed by 900km of waterways, which either flow in separate directions or merge to create the gorgeous lagoons, lakes, canals, and rivers that mother nature has to offer. You can sail along these idyllic waters and glance upon villagers going about doing their daily work. You can also make your experience a trance by spending your night in a boathouse, where you can slowly drift along these calm waters while a trained crew is on their heels to prepare sumptuous meals for you.
Beaches that look like paradise
The beauty of visiting a coastal state is that you escape the hustle and bustle of life and spend time on a beach. You can chill on the hammock, try surfing, or just run down the beach towards the water to feel like the main character of a movie. You can also try canoeing, kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving.

Kerala possesses a captivating culture that is sure to fascinate visitors. Explore the Jewish synagogue, which boasts stunning Chinese tiles, beautiful Belgian chandeliers, and traditional period furnishings. The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, built in the Gothic style, is another must-see attraction in Fort Kochi. To cap off an evening of exploration, enjoy a Kathakali performance, a classical dance that originated in the 17th century.

Kerala is blessed with the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that boasts a rich history dating back even further than the Himalayas, and backwaters to die for. It is thought that the origin of the name Wayanad can be traced back to the term “vayalnadu,” which refers to the region of paddy fields. The entire landscape of Wayanad is blessed with prolific valleys and a range of mountains covered with mist.
Nelliyampathy
If you move 60 km away from Palakkad, you will be graced by an alluring and delightful hill station called Nelliyampathy. This gift of mother nature ranges from a varying height of 467 meters to 1572 meters. The Pothundi Dam, built during the 19th century, is a well-known picnic destination that boasts of its stunning environs and delightful boating experiences. Visitors can also enjoy the scenic views from the Seetharkundu viewpoint, which is another popular attraction. According to local lore, Lord Ram, Lakshman, and Seetha Devi sought respite at this very spot during their exile.
Athirapally
Athirapally is an iconic village located in Kerala that is highly acclaimed for its Athirappilly waterfalls. It stands 1000 feet above sea level on the Chalakudy river, with the river being located at 80 feet. These are the largest waterfalls in Kerala. Because of this, they are called the Niagara of India. December sojourn in Goa
It was in the month of December ’16 that I along with my extended family made a visit to Goa. Even though I’ve been to Goa many times before, this trip was special to me as we were a big group of 10 people this time around. December, being one of the most pleasant months of the year, called for a perfect holiday outing. Since new year was around the corner, we decided to welcome it in this wonderful land of beaches…Goa. Goa has got two districts, North Goa and South Goa. While North Goa is known to be a vibrant, “happening” place with a bustling nightlife, and is often visited by tourists, South Goa is a more serene and scenic destination which is now gaining popularity among travelers. North Goa is loved by those who enjoy the fast-paced party life buzzing through the night, whereas South Goa is quite the opposite. For those who enjoy quieter vacations, there is nothing like a serene beach san too many people. As we were on the lookout for a tranquil and quiet place to stay, choice of South Goa for stay was natural.
The Stay:
In my previous visits to Goa, I stayed at some of the prominent names in Hotel Industry, but this time we wanted something more custom made to our needs, and most importantly we wanted to experience the privileges of spending time together under one roof. The concept of homestay was not new to me, but I never stayed in a homestay before. I was often told by my friends about the superior, comfortable and customized services that several well managed homestays offer and how it gives us the feeling of closeness which we often miss out on in our daily life, hence this time, we chose a homestay. We booked a 3 BHK villa in Costa Holidays, Varca in South Goa through TripThrill. It was a massive duplex villa with all modern amenities indoors. There was a portico at the entrance, a beautiful lawn on one side and a car parking on the other side of the villa. A perfect holiday home indeed! We loved the place, on top of it, TripThrill as a perfect host, took care of all of our in-house requirements, overall, our stay was pleasant and comfortable. Find the best Homestay for you in Goa: Click Here Places to see:
We all know that Goa is largely famous for its exquisite beaches and without doubt, is the most sought after tourist destination in India. There are more than 36 beaches in Goa, each one is known for its own distinctiveness. During our trip this season, we mostly covered the South Goa beaches and discovered that its circuit begins from Margao, the second most important city in Goa and connects Goa to all major cities in the coastline like Mumbai, Mangalore, and Kochi. After much thought and deliberation, we zeroed in on a few popular beaches to be visited in South Goa.
So…Here’s my share! These are the 10 happening beaches in South Goa: 1) Palolem Beach 2) Colva Beach 3) Agonda Beach 4) Bogmalo Beach 5) Majorda Beach 6) Benaulim Beach 7) Polem Beach 8) Arossim Beach 9) Varca Beach 10) Mobor Beach Our excitement knew no bounds at the very mention of ‘Beach’! We carried the required beach stuff like towels, flip-flops, swim wear, cameras (much needed) and off we went! 1) Colva Beach- Colva is a small village in South Goa on the shores of the Arabian sea. Two kms further ahead from Colva is Benaulim. With 20 kms of virgin white sands, palm-fringed and sun-drenched beaches, Colva is the most loved beach of the Goans. Moreover, Colva beach is not only a perfect place for swimming (the sea waves are not so much high) but also a center for night parties which are organized right on the sandy beach. While we took a stroll on the Colva beach, we happened to see silver carpets of mackerels shimmering on the golden sands, put up for drying. What an amazing sight it was! Roger’s and Leda lounge are the popular beach shacks on the shores of Colva offering yummy seafood. Vegetarians need not panic as restaurants here serve a variety of veg.food too! This place will fit those who like to spend their days lying on the beach under the sunbeams and partying all night long. 2) Benaulim Beach- Less than 2 kms south of Colva lies the more tranquil beach of Benaulim. It is one of the few places in Goa where one can get a glimpse of handicrafts, typical to this area. The ladies in our group even bought some pretty looking hand made bracelets from the beach vendors. Benaulim brings lots of beach activities ranging from water sports (parasailing, snorkeling, and windsurfing ) to eateries and other shopping activities. During our 10 days stay in south Goa, we too enjoyed parasailing, motor boat ride and dolphin sighting to name a few. The shops on this beach also offer furniture, Indian & Kashmiri handicrafts and ornaments. There are a number of beachside restaurants where one can gorge on yummy seafood. Johncy’s and Pedro’s are the two popular food joints on Benaulim beach. Nightlife at Benaulim is quite happening. At night, the beach looks very pretty with twinkling stars in the sky and gentle moonlight bestowing the place, amazing sight! Music, dance and drinking chilled beer are the main attractions of nightlife in Benaulim. 3) Palolem Beach- With a 1.5 kilometer stretch of white powdery sand, palm groves, a picturesque bay, and a small green island, Palolem beach offers a breathtaking view of the Arabian sea. This beach is also called a fishing beach. Fishermen often venture into the sea to catch fish from this point. There are a few shacks on the shore, selling seafood, souvenirs and bright, colorful clothes. One can hire taxis and auto-rickshaws to reach Palolem beach from Margao. One can also rent a bicycle from a number of places in the village and set out to whichever way their inner compass is pointing. There are regular buses too from various nearby villages to Palolem. To the North of Palolem beach is Butterfly beach and to the South is Patnem, both exuding an ideal allure. For nature lovers, Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary offers a visual treat. It is located at a short distance from Palolem. The sanctuary boasts an array of exotic towering trees and other tropical plants as well as protected wildlife. During our visit, we saw a lot of foreigners lingering here. Most of them can be seen sunbathing, listening to music or simply take a stroll on the sand. This place has a good nightlife. One can go to Neptune point for a silent noise party and enjoy music on their headphones and dance till the music ends. Draupadi, Magic Italy and Sea breeze are few popular restaurants in Palolem. It is a perfect place to watch the sunset! 4) Varca Beach- Amongst all the beautiful beaches in Goa, Varca beach is the one that holds a special place for every beach lover. This is because Varca beach is relatively quiet and peaceful. Situated in the south Goa, Varca beach simply adorns the entire Goa with its 10 km stretch of marvelous white sand and sparkling waves. Wake up early and go for a long walk on the beach, watch the seabirds and crabs and don’t miss to view the sunrise! Varca is a breath of fresh air to the soul and a wonderful place to refresh & recharge. While you are here, stay at Costa Holidays as it is very close to Varca beach. The Varca beach is not as commercialized and crowded as other major beaches of Goa. Instead, the quiet beach attracts visitors without fail since it is less crowded and cleaner than other big beaches. The Varca beach is ideal for lazing around and exploring local shacks. You can hire a boat and go out boating in the sea with an expert guide. You can also spot dolphins if you are lucky enough. There are numerous beach shacks offering a variety of Goan dishes and seafood at reasonable prices. One can also do some shopping therapy here. From a variety of funky jewelry made of seashells to colorful hats, clothes, bags, and other eye-catchy items are available in the hut shaped shops. 5) Arossim beach- Presents a long and white stretch of golden sand, lapped at by clear blue water and backed by a dense forest of palms. The beach is heaven not only for the party and leisure seekers but also for the adventure seekers. This beach offers various water sports activities viz: water surfing and sailing. There are plenty of eating options to choose from at and around the Arossim beach. To the hungry beach goer’s delight, there are quite a few beach shacks that offer fresh and delicious seafood. Just indulge! Know More about Goa: Read Here

I haven’t had a real New Year’s resolution in years but I think I’m vaguely coming up with things I want to do
Save more money
I want to budget better so I’m spending less and I want to be able to transfer more money to my US account and really build up my savings. Right now, I’m at an extreme where I have everything in my Japanese account but nothing in my US account or vice versa. I want to find the sweet spot.
Travel more
Seems like it contradicts the first point! But one of the reasons why I want to save more money is so I can travel easier, especially in the summer.
I’m making a list of places I want to go to and things I want to do
Fukui’s dinosaur museum
Be touristy in Hiroshima
Be touristy in Nagasaki
Kochi yosakoi festival
Hoshi Ryokan in Komatsu (the second oldest ryokan in Japan and not too far from where I live!)
Okinawa???
Hokkaido???
I want to go back to Tokyo and enjoy it instead of constantly being in a state of mad scrambling
Might not do all of these things next year per se because of my first resolution but I want to knock out a chunk!
I confess that a big reason why I haven’t traveled as much as I’d like is because I’ve never really had to plan my own trips entirely by myself. I was also really unused to relying on public transportation since I always drove myself in the US. I’m a lot more comfortable using trains and buses now and I know enough Japanese to figure out things if I get lost. The only way to get used to planning my own trips is to actually start planning trips! I also realized that another thing holding me back is that, in the US, I had such a close network of friends, I always had someone traveling with me whereas, in Japan, I have good friends but they all have their own plans so the idea of traveling alone and doing everything by myself was overwhelming. I shouldn’t hold myself back because of others (or the lack of).
I think my friend is going to visit me in Kanazawa in the spring so I won’t really be traveling then besides a very short trip to Osaka to do some things for me. I vaguely agreed to go on a road trip to *somewhere* outside Ishikawa with some friends. But I’ll have a lot of nenkyuu (and cultural furlough!) saved up by the time summer rolls around so I’m going to figure something out. I know I’m going to have at least ten days I really need to use before the next contracting year starts. I might be visiting my family over the summer so that’ll work out great if I do! If I don’t visit, I’m going to really want to take advantage of my hopeful savings for a nice long trip.
Get more involved
My school is really chill so I know I have more free time than some other JETs in my area. So I want to get involved more with planning things. I’m going to shoot for area leader or AJET.
Japanese more
I understand more than I think. I need to become more confident and more comfortable and that won’t happen if I study more and actually practice using it

This 7 Day Kerala Road Trip Itinerary is designed keeping the following factors in mind:
Fly in and Fly Out from Cochin International Airport
Have a vehicle at your disposal
Have 8 days in your hand
After doing a 7 Day Road Trip to Bhutan back in March, I decided to do a 7 Day Road Trip to Kerala but with my family, and this was roughly what we did, and what I recommend to you as well, as it contains a glimpse of everything you can experience in Kerala – God’s Own Country including admiring the different forms of street art, and cultural heritage in Kochi; visiting the massive tea estates in Munnar;  experiencing the rawness of Nature in Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady and enjoying the quietness and serenity of the Kerala Backwaters.
Having said that, the main priority of this 7 Day Kerala Itinerary is to relax and rejuvenate, as there isn’t much to do in Munnar, Thekkady or Alleppey.
 [toc]
Pin It for future reference!
Day 1 – Land in Kochi – Explore Fort Kochi
To make the most out of your Day 1 of your 7 Day Kerala Road Trip, make sure to land in Kochi before mid-day. This way you can check in to a hotel of your liking, preferably in Fort Kochi, and have the rest of the day, post lunch to explore the city of Kochi.
A charming seaside area, Fort Kochi is known for its Dutch, Portuguese, and British colonial architecture, and elaborate bamboo Chinese fishing nets which you can see at Fort Kochi Beach.
Fort Kochi is getting popular for its thriving and blooming art and cultural scene, which becomes evident, as you waltz your way around the narrow by lanes, and admire the different street art graffiti’s.
Street Graffiti in Fort Kochi
One place I’ll definitely recommend is the Kashi Art Café, where you’ll find some rather interesting and unique creations of art.
Enjoy a relaxing hearty meal in one of the many quaint cafes spread out in Fort Kochi, before calling it a night, and gearing up for the next day.

Day 2 – Kochi – Munnar | Munnar Spice Garden Visit
It takes around 4-5 hours from Kochi to Munnar, so ideally you should start by 9 AM, making sure that you reach Munnar by lunch time.
3 hours on the road, and it’s time for the first pit stop – Munnar Spices and Ayurvedic Garden.
Munnar Spice Plantation
The one hour tour across the spice plantation, where the guide briefs about various benefits of different spices and ayurvedic herbs, is quite a learning lesson, which sets a good tone to your 7 Day Kerala Trip.
BTW there’s also a chocolate factory, selling a variety of chocolates, which you can taste and buy as well. However, I’ll rather suggest, you purchase the chocolates from the shops in the city, as they are much cheaper.
Handmade chocolates being sold in Munnar
After the pit stop, continue on your way to Munnar, and reach your hotel, which was Amber Dale Resort and Spa, Munnar in our case.
Post lunch, explore the nearby Pallivassal Tea Estate, and the Attukad Waterfall, at your own pace.
Day 3 – Munnar Sightseeing | Tea Factory Visit
Like already mentioned, the priority of this 7 Day Kerala Itinerary is relaxation and rejuvenation. And there’s nothing better than, waking up without an alarm, and then enjoying a leisurely breakfast overlooking the picturesque tea estates.
Post lunch, head out to Lockhart tea estate for a tour of the tea factory, and learn more about the different processes involved in the production of Tea.
The famous Munnar Tea Gardens
Alternatively, you can head to the Mattupetty Dam and the Mattupetty Tea Estate, and do the tea factory tour there instead.
Thereafter make your way back to your hotel, to enjoy an amazing sunset, and a yummy dinner.
Matupetty Dam in Munnar

Day 4 – Munnar – Thekkady
Plan your day in such a way, that you enjoy a hearty breakfast at leisure in Munnar, and reach Thekkady – The Gateway to Periyar Tiger Reserve, just in time for lunch in Thekkady.
We managed to reach our resort in Thekkady – Greenwoods Resort Thekkady, just in time for lunch, which was followed by a guided tour around the 6-acre property, where we got to know more about the conscious efforts that, these people have been taking towards sustainability and implementing eco-tourism practices.
Greenwoods Resort Thekkady – Surrounded by nature
Post lunch, and a stroll around the property, there’s nothing better than jumping in the pool for some time, and taking an afternoon nap, in one of the many hammocks, hanging around.
Afternoon naps done right
However, keep in mind that if you plan to explore the Periyar Tiger Reserve on the next day, like us, you need to get your tickets for activities like Jungle Patrol, Bamboo Rafting, Border Hiking, Boating and Trekking, from the Ticket counter, which is just a 5 minutes’ drive from Greenwoods Resort Thekkady, and the counter closes around 5 PM in the evening (cross check with the reception). Also, there are a lot of cultural performances such as Kalaripayattu or Kathakalli, which happen in the evening every day, the tickets of which also need to be purchased before 5 PM (the reception will guide you to the ticket office).
The rawness of the nature trails in Periyar Tiger Reserve
Once you are back after purchasing the tickets, you can explore the Thekkady market, which is just at the doorstep of Greenwoods  Resort Thekkady, and purchase various spices, handmade chocolates, and other ayurvedic products.
Have a sumptuous dinner and call it an early night.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Day 5 – Thekkady Nature Trails
This is the day in your 7 Day Kerala Itinerary when you will be exploring the untouched beauty of Periyar Tiger Reserve, and the best way to get the best experience, is to opt for Bamboo Rafting, which basically involves, a one-and-a-half-hour hike through the jungle – an hour-long boat ride – and a hike back to the starting point.
Enjoying the panoramic view of the lake in PTR
The important thing to keep in mind, is to keep yourself hydrated, which PTR takes care off, as they give you a packed lunch, a bottle of water, some juice and fresh fruits in a backpack, making it easy to carry.
Hiking through the forest, with a guide, be assured that you will spot a lot of different species of birds, and if you are lucky, some animals as well.
The untouched beauty of Periyar Tiger Reserve
This whole experience of exploring the untouched beauty of Periyar Tiger Reserve, will take up 6 – 7 hours, and you should be back by 3 – 4 PM, giving you enough time to go back to the hotel, take an afternoon nap, and then head out again to see the cultural performances.
Views during the Bamboo Rafting session in PTR
As you will be tired, all you should be doing is chilling out once you are back to the resort for dinner, and a leisure stroll across the property, and ensuring that you get proper and well-deserved rest.
Check out this Weekend Guide to Thekkady for more ideas about the different Things To Do in Thekkady.

Day 6 – Thekkady – Kumarakom / Lake Vembanad
Its Day 6 of your 7 Day Kerala Itinerary, and you should check out of your hotel in Thekkady, to reach Aleppey/Kumarakom/Lake Vembanad, which will take 3-4 hours by road.
We had planned to stay at Lemon Tree Lake Vembanad, which overlooks the massive Lake Vembanad, and is a hot favorite among both corporate and leisure travelers. We were just in time for lunch, where the chef had prepared an authentic lunch in the local flavors, which was a gastronomic experience like none other.
There are plenty of luxury resorts in Kumarakom and Alleppey, which you can choose from depending on your budget, However, my personal recommendation would be Lemon Tree Lake Vembanad. It was the perfect place for us to be, as there wasn’t much to do, except to relax, enjoy the views, and chill out in the infinity pool overlooking Lake Vembanad.
Doing some Balancing practice at the edge of the infinity pool overlooking Lake Vembanad
Day 7 – Alleppey Backwaters Houseboat Experience
And just like that the 7 Day Kerala Road Trip, is at the last stage, but worry not, as there’s something special for the last day, which is – A full day cruise of the backwaters in the houseboat where you get to experience the beauty of nature in God’s Own Country, while enjoying a traditional meal on board, comprising of more than 15 dishes, served on a banana leaf.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The last day of the 7 Day Kerala Itinerary, couldn’t be much better than this. And did I forget to mention, you can book a spa session in the evening, after enjoying the day cruising along the backwaters. The 60 minutes ayurvedic massage, is just what your body needs, bringing your relaxing weeklong trip in Kerala to an end.
Cochin International Airport, is merely an hour’s drive from Lemon Tree Lake Vembanad, so you can book your flight accordingly, on the next day, thus bringing an end to a super relaxing 7 Day Kerala Tour.
