My people! 🤗
My life has been filled with upside down doors. Decisions I make that are best for my husband and myself. Those decisions met with instant judgement from some. Nobody asks for the real story—they’d rather make up their own version. It’s more fun for society, that way.
Through my years, I have found those similar to me, paving their own path with decisions best for them, despite what those decisions look like to the rest of the world. I crave time with these types of people. Just recently, I found a new one at the beach. A girl, with similarities to me, doing things a bit differently from those around her, fascinating stories of adventure, and a lover of life. Chasing after laughter instead of babies, and listening in conversation, not side-eyeing chaos around her. It didn’t hurt that she loves my doggies, either. Alas, I had to leave and return to my city home—land of normalcy and criticism of my way of life. Sigh. Thank goodness we don’t stay here long.
To my other magical people, paving their own way—you’re not alone. I am here too, and I want to hear YOUR stories. I can’t wait to meet you. Keep paving! 💛

The Latest Read...
When I started babysitting, I read books about caring for babies. I was a naturally-good caretaker of ages 3 to 8 because of my own childhood & caring for my sisters, but babies scared me.
When I learned I was going to be an aunt, I worked & studied to understand what my sisters were going through, so I could best support them. (I even got a whooping cough vax I didn’t want, so I could be one of the first to hold my nieces & nephews.) When I married a man with kids, I started studying up on blending families, so I could be the best support to him. (By the way, I’ve got a new book to add to this collection now—mine.) When I started volunteering with families in need, abused children, and domestic violence victims, I started reading about what can possibly go so wrong, and I did some personal work on my immediate judgement of abusers. The family unit has always been valuable to me, but as I went through life, I saw how it can all go sideways, too. My decision to not have children has so many legs, and what I experienced when I started sharing this decision was largely judgement and misunderstanding. Nobody studied up” or tried to understand me or this decision better. That was a bummer after a lifetime of supporting those who opt to become parents.
I forged through and found my own supportive network, and my world opened up even bigger, with both moms & non-moms in the mix. One of these friends, Tanya, started an international magazine to share more of this childfree lifestyle, and I am proud of her.
As a writer, author, and generally kind person, I feel we all should share our stories in a more authentic way. If you’re busy learning, sharing and supporting, there is very little time for judgement & misunderstanding. It’s nice here. The latest issue (with an article from me included) can be found here. It’s a great read and perspective for everyone—parents and non-parents alike.

At what age have people around you “nagged” you about having kids?
For most of us, it’s when we reach the big 3-0. Somehow, most people in our society still think that “time is running out” on us if we don’t have kids by that time. But what if we really don’t want them in the first place?
I’ve created a short course that will help you figure it out.

COVID Connections
One of the aspects of the COVID Closures has been the conversations I’ve had. I feel that I have gone deeper into conversations with dear friends, and with myself. My journals are smoking a bit, because I have been gifted with a clarity I didn’t have at the start of this year. My husband and I have had numerous, deeper conversations about plans we want to execute, new ideas for our future goals, and even new and creative ideas for dinner. We see this togetherness as a gift because we both received the harsh lesson of loss, as a friend died, suddenly, in April. Time is a gift, and we both committed to keep using our time and resources wisely.
We’ve even made some decisions, like finally buying that Porsche he’s been searching for our entire relationship. Living our life out loud is another way we honor what we’ve been given in this life, and we aren’t promised tomorrow. As an author, doing media interviews is part of the gig. When the global closures hit, I had to cancel several work trips, and some interviews were moved online. I was concerned with doing virtual interviews about my book because I fear how people connect already. Hurried, half-way listening. Listening to respond and not to understand. It’s human nature, and adding the element of distance scared me a bit. Would my story, words, ideas be misunderstood even more online? Would listeners hear my heart just as they read about it in my book? Would technology muffle the intention or purpose of the interview? All of these are still unknown, but I accepted the interviews anyway.
There’s a time to be quiet and conservative, but there’s also a time to be bolder and take a leap into the unknown or uncomfortable. My “COVID Conversations” turned out to be some of my most favorite connections. To my surprise, I’ve been able to go deeper with the interviews and connect with an even broader audience. I love hearing how my book resonates with readers and how they hear my story through each of their different filters. What I may pick up in a book, movie, or interview could be (and probably will be) different from what you hear or read. That’s part of the art of communicating. And yes, it is an art. When we slow down a bit, and when we carve out some time to be still, I feel that everything is more vibrant. Life, clarity, and purpose.
This particular interview with a fellow author from halfway across the world, in Australia, has been one of my favorite COVID Conversations, so I want to share here. In it, I share a very personal part of my life that kick-started my own journey off-stage, and closer toward who I am born to be. Living each day of my life with clarity and purpose is a gift. The world will misunderstand you, question your decisions, scoff at your successes and blessings, slander your name, and misrepresent you. Your job is to keep sharing your stories, your truth, and your heart.
I hope you enjoy the interview, and I hope it spurs along some deeper connection in your own lives. We have an opportunity during this time in our life to connect at a deeper level, so let’s use it.
Ask for the rest of the story.
Give someone the benefit of your listening ear.
Assume you don’t know the entire story, and be slow to judge.
Sharing our stories is the most authentic way we can connect, and I am happy for the time to share more with you. 💛
