Practice Update: Scandrick Returns To Practice; 3 Other Defenders Sit Out
FRISCO, Texas – One cornerback returned, but the Cowboys were still without two others on Thursday morning.
The team held its first practice of game week on Thursday, as the schedule has been slightly altered since Week 3 is a Monday night game. As expected, Orlando Scandrick was on the field and participating in the open portion of practice.
Chidobe Awuzie was present at practice, but he was not participating with the rest of his teammates. The rookie was doing rehab work on the hamstring he aggravated in Sunday’s loss to Denver.
“Don’t know how much Chido will do,” said Cowboys coach Jason Garrett on Thursday morning.
Nolan Carroll was also absent from practice, as he continues to recover from the concussion he suffered against the Broncos. Scandrick’s return to the field gives the Cowboys four healthy corners, along with Anthony Brown, Jourdan Lewis and Bene’ Benwikere. But it’s still a somewhat thin position as practices get underway.
Elsewhere, Stephen Paea was absent from Thursday’s practice. He, Carroll and Awuzie were the only three players on the roster to not take part in the open portion.
In a surprising turn, Anthony Hitchens was present at practice. The veteran linebacker was wearing his helmet and jersey and going through rehab work on the sidelines. It won’t count toward participation in practice, but it was certainly an encouraging sign, given that his knee injury occurred less than a month ago.

Could Chidobe Awuzie & Jourdan Lewis be Cowboys Starting CBs in 2020?
Could Chidobe Awuzie & Jourdan Lewis be Cowboys Starting CBs in 2020?
If the Dallas Cowboys allow top Cornerback Byron Jones and backup Anthony Brown to depart this offseason as free agents, it would leave Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis as the only legitimate starting options for 2020. While a new corner would likely be added this offseason, how would Dallas fare with Awuzie and Lewis taking over as the new top two?
Second and third-round picks in 2017, Chido and…

Pro Buffs Roundup
A few former Buffs are on national television tonight as the NFL season officially begins with the first preseason game of 2017. The annual Hall of Fame game features the Dallas Cowboys and the Arizona Cardinals at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
Chidobe Awuzie (2nd round) and Jordan Carrell (7th round) were both selected in this past year’s draft and have already made a name for themselves early in training camp. Chido caught the eye of Pro-Bowl receiver Dez Bryant saying, “Y’all are going to know those guys’ names in this league.”
Carrell has enjoyed his time being with his college teammate Chidobe Awuzie: “The first bus ride, I was walking in the bus and I seen Chido, and we both had a smile on our face. We just shook hands, and we’re just blessed to be in this position. It does help having somebody that you grinded with these past two years going through the same things, to be able to live this experience the same.”
Another former Buff will also be suiting up in the game, but for the Cardinals. Daniel Munyer signed a ‘future deal’ with Arizona in January after spending the past two seasons on the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad and active roster.
All three should get substantial playing time as veterans and starters for each team will most likely sit out. The game will be shown on both NBC and NFL Network at 6 p.m. MT with Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth on the call. Check it out!

Cowboys Set To Kickoff The 2017 Preseason This Thursday Night
This Thursday at 8 p.m. the Dallas Cowboys will take the field for the first time since their heartbreaking loss to the Green Bay Packers. The game is part of this season’s Hall of Fame weekend which carries added significance for Dallas this time around. Jerry Jones, the team’s longtime owner and general manger, is being inducted into the Hall, so there is sure to be a large contingent of former Cowboys players, coaches and of course fans on hand in Canton, Ohio. Who cares if it’s only a preseason game, the Star is back and expectations are high for 2017.
Last season’s initial preseason game treated us to a sign of things to come, as rookie Dak Prescott put on a marvelous performance against the Los Angeles Rams. Who is going to shine come Thursday night this time around? Below you will find all of the logistics as well as a few players to keep your eye on when you watch the game.
Time: 8 pm EST
Place: Canton, Ohio
TV: Nationally televised on NBC
Opponent: Arizona Cardinals
Line: Pick Em, O/U – 37
Players To Watch
With most of the starters only expected to play a series, if that, here are five Cowboys that should see some extended action, with a chance to make their mark.
1. Chidobe Awuzie – “Chido” has been a standout thus far in training camp, recording two interceptions during the first two padded practices. Reports coming out of Oxnard continue to highlight his competitiveness and aggressive style of play. It will be interesting to see if he lines up solely at outside corner or all over the field, as their have been rumblings of him playing a little safety.
2. Ronnie Hillman – With Ezekiel Elliott and Darren McFadden expected to see minimal if any game action this week, look for the trio of Alfred Morris, Rod Smith and newly acquired Ronnie Hillman to see the bulk of the workload. Hillman has had success in this league and a strong preseason performance could land him on the 53 man roster. Especially if he can find a way to contribute on special teams. Early reports suggest that Rod Smith is actually the team’s #3 back, which further adds to the intrigue of just where Alfred Morris fits in. Thursday night’s game should give us a good early indication.
3. Andy Jones / Noah Brown – There is a strong possibility of the Cowboys carrying six wide receivers this season. With Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley, Ryan Switzer and Brice Butler all safely on the roster, there is maybe one spot up for grabs. Andy Jones should have the leg up on rookie Noah Brown considering he spent all of last season learning the playbook and putting in work on the practice squad. However Dallas didn’t use a draft pick on Brown for nothing. I expect these two to battle it out all the way to the final cut down day.
AROUND COVER32
The Latest: Chargers’ first round pick, WR, Mike Williams, could be out for entire sesaon
Around the NFL: Could Steelers’ WR, Sammie Coates, be on the chopping block
What’s Trending: Roger Goodwell will be in Foxborough for NFL season opener
Fantasy Focus: Don’t sleep on Dolphins’ TE, Julius Thomas, in fantasy drafts
NFL Player Spotlight: Vikings’ WR, Laquon Treadwell, ready to prove himself in year two
4. Charles Tapper – After missing all of his rookie season due to a back injury that had gone undetected since birth, Charles Tapper is ready to get after quarterbacks in 2017. Grossly misused at Oklahoma, Tapper came into the league as the fastest defensive end at the 2016 NFL Combine. One thing the Cowboys certainly lack is speed off the edge. Fans should be excited to see Rod Marinelli coach this young man up to be a potential demon coming around the corner.
5. Kellen Moore – Dak Prescott is only expected to play a series, if that, and recently signed Luke McCown may not be ready to see game action. That leaves Kellen Moore to be under center for essentially the entire game. Before the signing of McCown, Moore was sitting comfortably as the teams #2 QB, with no real competition behind him. Now, Moore must perform in order to keep that job. McCown has been in the league a long time for a reason, and is more than capable of being a solid back up quarterback. If the team decides to only keep two quarterbacks, Moore is going to have to solidify his status with his play this August.

Cowboys rookies are nicknamed Taco and Cheeto, and this is not a drill
A combination like no other.
The 2017 NFL Draft continued on Friday night, with the second round getting started in Philadelphia. The Dallas Cowboys, picking 28th and 60th in the first and second rounds, selected defensive lineman Taco Charlton and corner back Chidobe Awuzie, whose nickname is “Cheeto.” Yes, you’re reading that right — Dallas’ two rookies are nicknamed Taco and Cheeto, folks.
Chidobe Awuzie's nickname is Cheeto. He now joins Taco as the newest Cowboy rookies. #CowboysDraft http://pic.twitter.com/bqEb4mVhId
— Dallas Cowboys (@dallascowboys) April 29, 2017
Taco’s real first name is actually Vidauntae. He’s recently come around to actually liking tacos. As a child, he resisted the food associated with the nickname.
He got the nickname, "Taco," as a young kid. And because all his friends thought that meant he loved tacos, he resisted, as kids do, and decided he wouldn't like tacos.
His attitude changed in college.
"Now, I love tacos all the time," Michigan senior defensive end Taco Charlton said Sunday. "Whether it's Taco Bell or I go make my own tacos or whatever."
Apparently his mother and grandmother thought that "Taco" was a good fit for him.
As far as Awuzie’s nickname goes, further research suggests that Awuzie’s nickname is actually “Chido” — but that’s OK, because Cheeto sounds exactly like Chido, and Cheetos and Tacos are delicious. In an interview with The Denver Post, fellow Colorado defensive back Tedric Thompson referred to his former teammate by Chido.
“My mom and grandma always told me that there’s going to be some people who are brought in your life for a reason,” said Thompson, a ball-hawking free safety. “I remember meeting Chido in 2013 and that’s been one of my best friends ever since, and Ahkello came a year later. We gel together so much.”
I really want some tacos and cheetos now, thanks, Cowboys.

Chidoe Awuzie feels he and Eagles go hand in glove
Colorado was home to one of the top secondaries in the Nation last year. Three of their defensive backs will be taken in the 2017 NFL Draft.
The Philadelphia Eagles have shown interest in Ahkello Witherspoon and Chidobe Awuzie during the draft process. Awuzie said he grew up an Eagles fan mostly because of Donovan McNabb, Brian Westbrook, and mainly Brian Dawkins.
