Day 77: "Still life with chicken" I am pretty proud of Bertha. She went from a non-laying hen in the fall to an every other day kinda girl over the winter. I chock it up to good nutrition and smart lighting. That's right. I used lights in my coop this winter for the first time ever. Now before you lecture me on how lighting a coop can "wear your hens out!" or "cause behavioral problems!" or "hens need to rest!", I did ALL THE READING. All of it. And then I read more. And then I formulated my own opinion based on previous experience and started an experiment based on that experience. Guess what? Phase 1 complete and so far, we have nothing but success. We have already established that chickens have human-like eye-sight. They have crappy night vision, and very good day vision (way better than ours!). Having poor vision in low light also means that lack of light during certain months prevents them from moving around, hunting for things, scavenging, scratching, and generally being the bounties of health they are in the brighter months. Huh. Coincidence? Nope, not at all. It's not that they need all light all the time. They just need more light in the winter than they would normally get. Why is that even a thing? Think about it. You live in what is technically a box outside year round. Chances are that box has at least one window, somewhere. Some days during the winter, particularly in the Northeast, the sun never comes out. That means your window(s) are only going to be providing minimal, diffused light to you and your friends. Yeah, I wouldn't want to lay eggs either. That's a horrible place to brood a clutch. How do we solve this? A low wattage LED floodlight on a timer. My light goes on at 5:30AM (not adjusted for daylight savings), and goes off at 6:30PM. Year round. I made some dietary adjustments to make sure my hens were getting the right nutrition to support continuous laying (like adding kelp meal and lacto-fermented grains to their diet) too. Ask me if you want the specifics! Again, so far, nothing but healthy, hard-shelled eggs, even from the older birds. The results have been nothing short of incredible: - This is the first year that I haven't had a sick bird in the dead of winter. - This is the first year I haven't had any frostbite. - This is the first year I had eggs in January. - This is the first year I could incubate fertilized eggs in February. - This is the first year I haven't had a spike of rooster aggression because he never stopped getting laid ALL winter. - This is the first year my hen's aren't beaten up because the rooster is over breeding. - This is the first year my brahmas' foot condition has improved because they're more consistently active. Experiments continue and I will report my findings.
