In 1950s Kingston Jamaica 🇯🇲 sound systems were loaded on trucks and played for people at street parties. Jamaica birthed and cultivated the sound system, which would later to spread throughout the Caribbean and then the world 🌍. When Jamaicans were forced to migrate for work they brought their amazing music and culture of sound systems with them to Europe and the Americas. From talking to folks in Chicago it seems some sound systems were present in Chicago by the 1970s. Please correct me if you know different. I have spoken to a couple sounds who would string up their systems in the 1980s. The first time I ever witnessed a Jamaican sound system was in the mid 1990s when Selassie Fest was THE fest to attend in Chicago’s Washington Park. Though there has always been a soundsystem culture in Chicago it was not known to most outside of Chicago’s Caribbean culture. Fast forward to 2017 and this sound system culture that Jamaica created has gone global. By virtue new places and new cultures have added to its evolution. Even the music played on these systems has evolved from strictly Jamaican music to a wide variety of “bass” music. To me much of modern electronic music owes its foundation to Jamaica sound system culture. We know hip hop’s credited father, Kool Herc, was Jamaican and undoubtedly influenced by his mother country. Tonight we are blessed to sight one of these lauded Chicago sound systems. This one is by way of Belize 🇧🇿.
