What drew you to Chestappen over other Max ships?

Hiya! Happy Friday!

I actually got into F1 races as a Checo fan, a lot of my RL friends into F1 support him and we see races together. Max being the team mate has got default shipping potential so my shipping brain noticed that. I wasn't actually huge on Max until E wrote AFB. Then I was totally in love because that's just Max, a fact, we saw him at the Norisring and he is a bit of a fruit and a bit of a killer <3 Also their dynamic is exactly what I love. Age gap, guilt, redemption except maybe no actual redemption/closure, inverted power dynamics, limits/compromises/failures/in spite of everything vibes, intergenerational angst, sacrifice, conflict, different cultures/classes/different origin stories, complicated emotional connect in high stakes situations, really hyperspecific competence kinks. As a ship it definitely hits my criteria.

Recently, yeah, don't know why, maybe because I've seen a few posts with the ship and it entices me. Pato is such a flirt, so I get why he's paired with a bunch of Indy drivers, but Palex has a strong vibe... it kind of reminds me of Chestappen:

chestappen: tbh this is one of those ships that i didn't realise existed until i got an ask about it a while ago. but honestly all checo ships are compelling cause checo is... so wildly unpredictable. i feel like nothing he does makes sense, but that's the joy of it. so... doesn't make sense, somewhat compels me.

sargebon: makes sense, compels me. but only compels me in the very narrow vibe of this one fic i read where alex was being kind of mean and horrible. rancidness is my drug and i think alex's mean side should be explored more.

checo x strollonso: makes sense compels me!!!! i don't have much to say about this except that lance's former papi and new papi should do crazy things to him together.

re: mclaren I wonder if it’s bc the chemistry was too good between carlos n lando it’s just not even worth replicating. like how rbr didn’t really go in on more fan dynamics for years after daniel left. that being said I’m less bothered by the corporate chestappen bc it’s not a popular ship that occupies any relevance in fan spaces on tumblr or ao3 they are truly not co-opting anything.

i don't know! i do think lando's a bit less down to play ball like he was with carlos. remember when everyone was so hyped about the daniel and lando content when daniel joined mclaren only for them to not gel well at all, lmao. and oscar/lando could be v good and clearly they don't mind each other but it's much more of a whatever vibe there, which i don't think works great for any vaguely shippy content. to be honest i think shipnames are cringe af to use when there's 9090389 ao3 fics or zero. that's a fandom thing and companies should stay the f out of it

Absolutely, and surprising for me coz I don't think I will ship them.

At first I strictly see them as platonic because combination of Checo's dad vibe and their "fight" back on early RB Checo days. NGL I blame RBR acc for (kind of) enabling the ship, and the interpretation of Checo in the fandom drew me into the ship.

I feel a bit left out because 50% of Chestappen fic on Ao3 is in Spanish.

Considering what I have been writing almost exclusively for the last year, lestappen. But all of time it's destiel.

I actually don't think I have one. I tend not to care much about what other people are shipping that isn't for me. I don't think there are many F1 ships that give me that strong NOTP vibe, there are some I just don't care for.

16. Talk about a ship you initially disliked.

Unfortunately I rarely change my mind on ships, so the ones I like I still like and the ones I dislike I haven't budged on. One I was initially like "I don't get it" was for chestappen, but now I very much enjoy their dynamic, I have seen the light on that one.
