And the third night at the museum film, as silly as it gets, ends with a performance from Robin Williams with a line that makes me absolutely weep each time (I catch it on an airplane). Now that's partly the movie and mostly the real life circumstance of his death, but the way it hits emotionally it... it's like they knew how important it was.
the fact that none of the night at the museum movies were rated over 50% by critics is a reminder that some ppl don’t know how to have fun. the first two movies were flawless. a night watch guard has to babysit museum displays that come to life, complete w old school villains and endless historical crossovers? incredible concept, incredible execution

WORTH IT.
Read it on AO3
You always knew this day would come. In fact, you knew you had many of them ahead of you. And yet, when your necklace starts glowing, you feel the dread creeping up, the fear of finding out who's turn it was.
As if she could hear you, Pike's broken voice comes through in your mind: "Kiki, it's Grog. Please, come to Whitestone".
As quickly as you could, you let your father know, open up a portal, and you're out of the Sun Tree. Vex'ahlia, tears in her eyes, and Percy, holding her by the shoulders, are waiting for you there.
You hug them both tight, and you head to Sarenrae's temple, where Pike and Scanlan are standing beside a lifeless Grog.
He looks peaceful. His hulking form isn't menacing with his eyes closed, and his mouth so relaxed. It was time.
You let a few tears fall, hold the gnomes, and you have a small service for the goliath.
You then head to a tavern and drink his beloved ale in his honor, reminiscing of all the good times.
"To Grog Strongjaw, Grand Poobah de Doink of All This and That" a slightly drunk Percy shouts "a great fighter and an even greater friend!"
"To Grog!" You all cheer.
Just as the day begun, it comes to a close. You're all tipsy, and teary eyed. You say your goodbyes and head back to Zephrah, your heart a little heavy.
You carve a space for a cup of ale next to the shrine to the Raven Queen, and head to sleep.
//
A few years go by, you visit Whitestone from time to time, get to see all the De Rolos grow up, share a knowing smirk with Percy when Cassandra finally introduces her girlfriend to all of you.
You participate to all the great events, the weddings, the births, the tearful final goodbyes to your allies.
Allura introduces you and the Tal'Dorei council to a group of colorful individuals from Wildemount, called the Mighty Nein (but there's eight of them? No one says it but you all think it), who apparently had saved the World and managed to let it go undetected.
You recognize them from your mother's stories, they are the ones who brought her back to you.
You thank them profusely, and you catch the redhead wizard blush as the white haired drow next to him smiles and rubs his shoulder, and stifle laughter knowingly when you see the dark skinned woman, the pale and tall one who was holding her hand and the blue tiefling all looking at Vex with their mouth open. The yellow clad halfling smacks them subtly as their half orc friend politely smiles at all of you.
It's funny, you knew the feeling of being caught staring at Vex'ahlia very well.
You see Percy grow a beard that makes him look older and cheer loudly alongside Vesper when with an excited "Auntie Keyleth, look!" she druidcrafts a snowdrop in her hands.
//
A few years later, as you're tending to the needs of your people, the necklace pulsates again. You have a suspicion this time, and your heart clenches.
Coming out of the Sun Tree once again, you can see the whole atmosphere is somber. Black flags with the Whitestone crest glowing gold wave in the breeze, falling from the Castle's large windows.
You lean against the Tree that's become like a friend to you.
"Hey, Keyleth. It's quite the sad day. I can feel the grief of the whole city in my roots."
Tears fall and you ask what you already know.
"It's Percy,isn't it?"
"It is. You might want to go to Lady Vex. I know she might need you."
You find them once again, gathered in the temple. The De Rolos are surrounding their mother, who's sobbing loudly. You'd seen her this broken only once before, for her brother.
Only this time, it was your brother, laying limp and quiet, with Pike performing the last rites.
You see Taryon held by Lawrence in the large crowd, but you make a beeline to Vex.
"Mom, aunt Keyleth is here," Vesper whispers.
Trinket is next to her of course, whining in pain too.
Vex'ahlia opens her bloodshot eyes, looks at you briefly and runs into your arms.
You feel her pain, all of it. You try to convey everything you can in that hug.
I'm here. I know. I feel it too. I've felt it too. She holds you like you're the last thing keeping her standing. And you hold her like she held you many years before.
Drinks are had, words and stories are shared. You decide to stay at the Castle one more night, you let Korrin know through Pike.
Everything goes quiet. In the dead of night, you hear a knock at the door of your guest room. You already know who's going to be on the other side, and yet when you open it and the dim candles show a shattered Vex'ahlia, her cheeks wet with tears, her eyes sunken with exhaustion, your heart aches.
"Keyleth..." she says with a barely audible whisper.
No more words are needed. You let her fall into your arms, and hold her through the night, let her sob in your arms until she passes out.
Eventually, you fall asleep too.
Vex gives you the raven skull you made for him before you leave, and you make sure to place it next to the mug of ale, with a pocket watch.
//
Years keep passing by, you see Vesper's magic thrive and see the proud look in her mother's eyes. You know you must share that same look. You see her become every bit of the leader Percy was, with her mother's wits and her father's strong willpower.
//
Eventually you have to go to Deastock and say goodbye to Taryon, that's another hard hit on Vex. He was her best friend.
This time you carve the logo of his Brigade in what has become the Vox Machina tree in Zephrah.
//
You and Vex grow closer. She reminds you of him in so many ways, and yet she's so different. A few wrinkles are starting to appear near her eyes, but as you keep observing her, she's never been more beautiful.
Many things start to become usual occurrences, like you visiting the Castle, and her coming to Zephrah with the help of her daughter.
Everytime you see each other, it seems like the pieces start falling back together.
One day, as regular as any other, you're watching the sun setting on your tribe and you catch her looking at you intensely.
"You're so beautiful, darling."
You're taken aback. She doesn't give you time to reply. Without even being able to register it, her mouth is on yours, and her hand is in your hair.
You'd lie if you said you hadn't ever dreamed of this.
Suddenly, she stops, touching her lips in shock "Keyleth, I'm so-" this time you cut her off, shaking your head and catching her sorry with your mouth.
You're not sorry. You're glad she did that. You would have never had the guts to make the first move. And Gods, her lips are so soft, her hands tangle in your hair and you don't know what to do, but bask in the comfort her body pressed against yours gives you.
She must be feeling something similar, cause her breath becomes shallow as she whispers "Key" in between kisses.
That night you make love and it's sweet, and calm and slow, nothing like you thought Vex would be. You both needed this so bad, you know you've loved her for a long time and if only an ounce of her felt the same, you'd be happy with it.
Waking up next to her is nothing short of magical. She's peacefully sleeping, her dark, naked back warmly lit by the sunrise creeping in. You softly brush your fingers along her spine, and her eyelids flutter to reveal warm hazel irises, looking at you with a small smile. Your breath catches.
"I love you," you whisper, unable to keep it in anymore.
Her smile widens. She kisses you and your heart races fast when she says "I love you too, Keyleth," brushing your noses together.
You feel happier than you've been in a long time.
//
Life goes on between Zephrah and Whitestone, you both have responsibilities you can't run from.
You say your last goodbyes to Allura, and shortly after Kima, who are buried together as they always asked.
//
Once Vesper is ready to take the helms of Whitestone, Vex decides that it's maybe time to leave, not without hesitation.
"Mom, go. I get it,okay? We will visit all the time, you won't even have time to miss us".
Vex gives her a teary laugh, kisses her forehead, and with an "I'm so proud of you" she comes to Zephrah with you.
Korrin and Vilya treat her like their own, and you look at her in adoration when she tells you they're like the parents she always wanted.
//
Vesper keeps her promise, and the De Rolos come visit all the time. You don't catch when Percy IV, their youngest, calls you mama, but Vex does and maybe sheds one little happy tear.
Zephrah is always buzzing with life, thriving under Keyleth's leadership, and Vex's advice.
//
Their necklaces glow once more, and they know it's time to say goodbye to Scanlan this time.
Kaylie plays a sorrowful piece in honor of her father, as you and Vex hold Pike. They both know what it's like to lose a soulmate.
As always you gather in the tavern and share stories of Scanlan the bard.
"He died as he lived," Kaylie raises her cup "hard and fast!"
You all share a teary laugh and get drunk as you say goodbye to another friend.
You show Vex the Vox Machina tree for the first time in years, as you carve a space for a miniature shawm.
She holds you as you both look at the Raven Queen's shrine.
"I hope they're all together," Vex whispers. "I hope he doesn't hate me for this," she chuckles and kisses your cheek.
Just as she says that, as if out of nowhere, a large raven lands between you two on Vex's shoulder. It nuzzles her.
"I guess you have your answer," you smile and scratch the top of the raven's head. It leans in your hand.
//
Life goes on, the kids aren't kids anymore, Vesper leads Whitestone fiercely, you say goodbye to Gilmore a couple of years after Allura and Kima, but you have each other to lean on.
//
One day, Vex feels too tired to get out of bed and Trinket lets out a long groan.
You quickly message Pike, who comes to Zephrah with the children.
She does a quick scan of her body and confirms what you already know.
There's nothing wrong with your Vex, nature is claiming her. It's time to say goodbye.
A sob wracks your body, you knew it was coming. You saw the wrinkles getting more prominent and her hair going gray with the passing of years, but it still hurt to know.
You can never be ready.
You let the kids say their goodbyes, not wanting to intrude on such an intimate moment.
When your turn comes you try to be strong, but your heart is in too much pain.
She lays a hand on your now wet cheek, and strokes it with her thumb, wiping away some tears. "Kiki..." her flebile whisper is full of love.
"I don't know if I can do this without you, too".
"Of course you can. You're strong, and caring, and kind. Your people rely on you. You don't need me to succeed. I will always love you, Key. I will always be with you. Far, but never gone, remember?"
You kiss her hand.
"I love you. You're every bit as beautiful as the day I first met you."
You lean over her to kiss her lips, and with a smile, she lets out her last breath.
You can't help but hold onto her a little longer.
Trinket plops down next to you and lays his head on Vex's stomach, breathing heavily.
You know he must be close as well.
You clutch his fur, as he breathes one last time, too.
All the kids and Pike kneel down to hold you, and together, you mourn the loss of Lady Vex'ahlia.
You take her blue feathers, tie them on your staff, with the black ones you had from Vax.
In the tree, you leave the tip of an arrow, and one of the pink bows you and Vax once put on the bear.
//
The De Rolos go back to Whitestone, Pike spends some days with you.
It will take a long time to heal, but you have plenty of that.
You'll outlive them all, it's your tragic destiny, you signed up for it. It doesn't hurt any less.
//
Pike is of course the next one to go, the worshippers of the Everlight all gather to say goodbye to her Champion, you look around and see just how many lives Pike's kindness had touched. It's beautiful.
Your tree has another spot, with the symbol of Sarenrae and a miniature mace.
//
You carve one last spot on the tree, that you know won't be filled for many years still.
You leave instructions for your antlers to placed there.
//
You're thankful to have your parents by your side, as the days blur together.
Eventually you feel happiness again, when Vesper brings her firstborn to you and you get to see new life blossom in every corner of your tribe, the Ashari growing and leaning on you, the love on your mother's face and the pride on your father's.
//
Years, and years, and years pass but you never forget them, not once, not for a second.
Vax'ildan, with his smirk and his daggers, and his wings that held you in safety. Your first love. Forever and ever and always.
Vex'ahlia, matching smirk on softer lips, the best of hagglers, witty and beautiful and quick with her arrows. The lover you got to keep. The lover that got you through.
Percival, your very best friend, your brother and partner in crime, a quick draw, the smartest of you. A loving husband and father, a fierce leader.
Grog, big and strong with a heart of gold, with his smile and fun in fights and taverns, his gentle hands with small creatures. Not the smartest, but still one who thought you so much.
Scanlan, the embodiment of fun and laughter, always ready to pick everyone up and help out, cheering and inspiring with his voice and his charm.
Pike, the kindest of spirits, her heart bigger than her small frame could ever contain, sweet and loving like a mother to all.
Taryon, flamboyant and fun, with his desire to be accepted and his mind full of ideas, always accompanied by his thousands versions of Doty, faithful companion.
Trinket, friend of Vox Machina, her Vex's best friend, as much of a member as everyone else.
You never forget any of them. You feared it would happen after meeting Sprigg, it felt like looking in a mirror of your future.
But you keep them in your heart until you're old and gray, tell your stories to your tribe, make sure they are spread across the world so that Vox Machina may never be forgotten.
As you close your eyes for the last time, you dream of them and hope that the Raven Queen will be kind enough to let you see them once more.
//
On the other side, what you see surprises you. It's them, all of them. Vax, with his wings spread, in the middle, smiling bright. Vex is next to him, looking like the day you met. None of them is old and gray. Percy's hair is even black, rid of the stress and weight of the world.
Pike's hair is black as well, like the day you first called her to help you with Grog.
Everyone looks young, and happy. You feel yourself crying. As you look down, you notice your hair are long and flowing, a fierce red.
"You did so well, princess." Vex'ahlia winks at you, and you suddenly feel surrounded by all your family's arms.
You smile in the cuddle pile, think back to your adventures, and realize that everything was worth it, after all.

Going Out Of My Mind In My Mind
Requested fic by anon. (If you have any fic ideas or requests you'd like me to write, you can leave me an ask!)
Book: My First Two Loves
Pairing: Ava Lawrence x MC (Emma Price)
Genre: Fluff but make it angsty
Rating: PG13
Warning: Mild homophobic comments
Word Count: 3,611
A/N: Ava is in love with her best friend. She gets lost in her own thoughts while contemplating if she should reach out to MC. Firstly, I wanna say I’m so sorry to the anon that requested this if they wanted a more light-hearted fluff fic lmfao. If you did, please send me another ask lol. Secondly, I wanna apologise to my fellow wlw for including a little homophobia. It’s not that harsh or mean, but it’s there. I thought including it would better portray a realistic encounter of what it’s like to be a wlw accepting her sexuality and exploring her feelings.

The first time I realised I was in love with my best friend was... well, I'm not sure if I'm being honest.
But damn, if that's not the most generic, cliché plot ever for every sapphic film and story ever, I'm not sure what is. However, there was always some truth to fiction and I was no exception.
That was my life. Generic and cliché. Popular high school captain of the cheerleaders who lived in the suburbs and came from a middle-class family that has dated the school's famous golden-boy quarterback.
For far too long, everything was normal. Too normal. Painfully normal.
That is, of course, until I started realising I had feelings for my best friend that was very much into guys. As I've mentioned, I couldn't pint-point an exact date or incident but like a hurricane, it was sudden even though there were warnings signs and it was just as destructive, uprooting and destroying everything I thought I once knew, a force to be reckoned with.
It was utter chaos in a seeming perfect picture but for the first time in my life, I felt alive.
Emma Price was my hurricane. Whether that was a good or bad thing, that was up for debate. All I knew was that I wanted her in my life and didn't care if it wasn't the best idea or if it would hurt me. I just wanted her to be with me.
I think that's the funniest thing about finally having a genuine, heart-wrenching, crush on someone. Even the smartest people get dumb, the most cautious are reckless and the logical becomes irrational. Everything that made sense doesn't anymore because why the hell are you doing things you normally wouldn't do for someone that doesn't even like you back?
I learnt that first-hand and I wished someone would've warned me before that. Not like I would've believed it but at least it would be playing at the back of my mind. An echo in the distance, a nagging voice.
I did the stupidest stuff once I was certain I was in love with Emma. I knew I was in love with her but I was in denial and did things I regretted. Dating other people, trying to make her jealous, downplaying my feelings when I saw her with Mason or Noah. Pushing her away and avoiding her instead of talking to her...
It's different, falling for your best friend. Feelings and signals are mixed, emotions are at a high and everything is just one confusing mess of a relationship that was once simple and innocent.
And now, here I was, laying on my bed, staring at my phone as if it would magically tell me the right thing to do if I looked long enough. It didn't, of course. I sighed, wondering if I should shoot Emma a text. It's been some time since we just talked for fun and I missed her sorely.
Procrastinating, I swiped through my home page. My eyes caught sight of a certain app that I opened ever so often whenever I was missing my best friend.
~*~*~
"Come on! Just download it!"
I scrunched my nose up. "Give me one good reason why."
"Because you’re the best friend in the whole world and you'll do anything I say because you love me?" she said jokingly while batting her eyelashes at me but my heart started racing.
I was acutely aware of her hand on my thigh and the way she leaned into me. My breath hitched at her nearness even though we've been closer before.
That was something else about having a crush on your best friend. Suddenly, everything felt like too much. Every word, every touch, every damn single thing was overwhelming and honestly? It was exhausting. Not only is it emotionally tiring, you go into this weird phase of wanting to savour everything they do and you can't help but wonder why you didn't appreciate these small moments before. You can't help but feel as if you've wasted them all.
If she could sense me stiffen, she didn't show it 'cuz she just went on. "Also, it's about a cartoon cat that eats to save the world! What's not to love?"
"That sounds ridiculous, Em," I laughed. "What's the game called?"
"Dopey Cat!"
"Oh god," I groaned. "That makes it sounds much worse."
"Or much better!" She nudged me and I felt a jolt go up my arm. I always wondered if these simple touches felt the same to her. "Do it"
"Alright, alright!" I giggled and surrendered. "Only 'cuz I'm such a great friend."
"Yes! And like I said," Emma leaned in and my heart dropped to my stomach. "The best."
She gave me a slow, soft peck on my cheek and rested her head on my shoulder, clinging onto my arm and leaving me a flustered mess.
~*~*~
I thought about that moment often. More often then I'd like to admit. Every time I did, the same thoughts would always come to mind.
What would've happened if I kiss her? What if I just turned my head right before her lips touched my skin? Would she have kissed me back? Would she push me away? Maybe she'd say she felt the same way about me.
But that didn't happen, so all I could do was wonder.
And wonder I did.
Being in my room like this, doing nothing, it really did make my mind go everywhere. I've dreamed and cried and laughed and screamed and doing nothing was suddenly the most taxing thing I've ever done. Doing nothing when you're in love with someone who doesn't love you back was the most dangerous thing 'cuz they’re already always on your mind but when you're doing nothing, your thoughts just spirals down an endless pit of possibilities that'll never happen and ultimately, you get hurt.
But knowing this, I still let my thoughts spiral anyway. How could I not when the joy and peace I got from imaging a world where her and I were together was worth the pain and heartbreak?
'Cuz figment of my imagination or reality, it didn't matter, she was worth it.
I've imagine us on dates, having picnics, watching movies, going on road trips, sleeping over, laughing over nothing, at the park, at the beach, in a field, in our rooms.
I've thought about us dancing in the living room at 12 a.m., huddled in bundles of blankets on a cold night, singing along to our song while making breakfast, staying up under the night sky and talking about everything and nothing until sunrise, being able to introduce her as my girlfriend and kissing her whenever I felt like.
I've dreamt about us so much as a couple that I've accidentally mistaken reality for fiction but like I've said, there's always some truth to fiction.
~*~*~
"Congrats on being co-captains, guys!" Iris wished us enthusiastically, practically jumping up and down.
"Seriously, you guys totally deserve it," Toni agreed.
"Thank you!" Emma said.
"You two are the best duo! Our cheer squad is gonna rule with you both leading us!"
"Thanks," I said and pulled Emma in for a side hug, feeling goosebumps from the contact. "We do make a pretty great couple."
I immediately froze when I realised what I said and mentally kicked myself.
God, that was so stupid! Why was I so careless? I should watch what I say!
That wasn't the first time I've done it and I was sure it wasn't the last, but just like how Emma was always the only one to mess up my constant, she was the one difference between all the other times and this time.
She had never heard me refer to ourselves as a couple but while I was beating myself up, Emma handled the situation coolly. She slid her hand in mine and squeezed which did nothing to calm my wrecked nerves.
"We definitely sure would! She the sweetest, more caring person in the world and I'd be so lucky to call her mine." She leaned into me and gave me a nudge but all I could do was stare at her, eyes wide and brows raised.
Her deep brown eyes locked onto mine and I swear I could feel the spark between our gaze. And what was that I saw in her eyes? Longing? A hint? I wasn't sure but I could've sworn there was something else I couldn't quite decipher. Then again, I didn't really trust my thoughts. If it could make me believe we were actually a couple, why would I ever trust it in this situation? How could I?
I'm not sure how long we were staring at each other 'cuz to me, it felt timeless. We only broke apart when we heard someone making a retching sound.
"Gross! Go get a room," Lauren said as she walked towards us. "No one wants to see two lesbos in action."
I felt her hand fall out of mine and suddenly, I felt very vulnerable.
"You don't have to be rude!" Iris defended.
"Yeah, Lauren, no one asked," Toni agreed.
Emma spoke up. "Go away, Lauren. No one wants you here." She said it in an almost tired manner. She was done with putting up with her and it showed.
"Aw, protecting your lesbian lover? Cute," Lauren rolled her eyes and walked away. "Whatever, later, losers!"
"Don't listen to her," Toni said after Lauren left.
But how could I not?
"Hey, Ava?"
I could hear the sweet voice of best friend calling out to me but it was distant.
Everything was. I didn't feel like I was in my body. All my senses were numb and I felt nothing. Nothing except the raging white heat within me. I was having an out of body experience in the worst way possible and for a moment, I didn't feel human.
~*~*~
Then Ava was definitely different from Now Ava. Then Ava wanted to cry and run as far as she could. But she couldn't. She was paralysed with fear and embarrassment. Now Ava would've just laughed and called Lauren pathetic. Maybe even give her a nice slap across the face if she felt like it. But Now Ava wasn't Then Ava, so why dwell on the past?
The thing is, I didn't want to. But like that dull throb at the back of your skull after a concussion, I just couldn't ignore it. You tell everyone you're fine, and for the most part, you are. But that annoying sensation, constantly reminding you aren't, that you just couldn't forget. That was that moment with Lauren.
Her words played in my mind on repeat for the first week after hearing it. Months later that voice was softer and less frequent, but it was still there.
A lot happened in those months. The biggest of all? I finally accepted that I was gay. No, not gay, a lesbian.
That word Lauren had spoken with a jeer, the word she used to insult me, the word that was meant to humiliate me, I was that word.
That wasn't the only time I heard it used that way but it was the first time it was used against me. Lauren's words was a constant reminder in my mind that being a lesbian was an embarrassment, that I was an embarrassment.
Then Ava would feel a chill run up her spine when she heard that word even though it wasn't directed to her. And when it finally was, her soul left her body but of course, that would've been too easy. Her soul leaving her body would've been the easy way out. So instead, she was forced back into reality and had to find a way to deal with it.
Now Ava knew it wasn't a bad thing. Of course she did, she was one, after all. So why did Lauren's words still haunt her?
I still had to remind myself that it was okay. It wasn't gross or immoral or whatever nonsense they put into my mind about girls liking other girls. And every time I did, the madder I got. At everyone that has ever said anything about it and at myself.
Because how dare they tell me how to feel?
And how dare I listen to them when I knew it wasn't true?
I was at peace with it now. I was at peace with being a lesbian. But being at peace wasn't the same as embracing it, owning it. And I'm not sure if I ever will, but I hope I do.
I wasn't out to anyone, and god, I've never felt so suffocated in my life. I couldn't even tell Emma 'cuz I was afraid of how she'd react. Or worse, that she'd assume I have a crush on her. And the worst part, that it was true. That I couldn't even deny it.
Not being able to tell your best friend whom you've always told everything to made me feel like shit. It ate away at me every time I was near her and whenever we were talking. I always wanted to bring it up but I never found out how. Maybe I will soon, but not now.
Emma had always been understanding. Even when she didn't get it, she would try. She wasn't quick to judge nor did she so easily jump to conclusions but I couldn't help but think that maybe, she wouldn't be so understanding. 'Cuz that's what you do when you overthink. You worry about things that you shouldn't and you create false scenarios and you just, can't, stop.
Which was exactly what I was doing right now.
I sighed, catching myself before I could spiral any further and rolled onto my side, staring out of the window with my phone abandoned on the bed.
It started drizzling and it was getting pretty cold. I moved to get under my comforter and wrapped the sheets around me.
And once again, I closed my eyes as my mind began to wander.
If only Emma was by my side...
~*~*~
"Oh my god! Ava! Stop!" she would giggle as I showered her in kisses.
"Nu-uh!" I'd respond and wrap her up in my arms, still kissing her wherever I could reach as we rolled around on my bed, playing.
She'd try to escape but since I'm stronger than her, it's useless. She's trapped in my embrace and eventually, she'd give in and hug me back.
We'd laughed about silly inside jokes as we let our hands linger over each other's bodies, not wanting to let go.
I'd pull her tight and she'd rest her head against my chest as the rain outside got heavier.
I'd shower her in compliments and she'd blush. We'd talk about life, our hopes and dreams and ambitions. Our plans and future together.
"Would you still be with me?" I'd ask her.
"Forever and always, baby," she'd reply and give me a reassuring kiss.
We'd waste away the rest of the day together and I wouldn't have had it any other way.
~*~*~
But that was just fantasy. She's not here and I'm not ready. Not ready to come out to Emma, let alone confront her about my feelings for her.
I took a deep breath before opening my eyes, as if I were physically preparing myself to come back to reality. I glanced at my phone screen that was opened at her chat. I picked my phone up and got ready to type but I hesitated.
Should I do this?
I didn't have much of a choice though, 'cuz my phone rang and lo and behold, my best friend, my crush, the girl I fell in love with, appeared as the caller ID.
My heart sank but my stomach filled with butterflies. This conflicting emotion wasn't a rare occurrence ever since I fell for my best friend but that didn't mean I was used to it. Fear and excitement coexisted where it shouldn't which only left me with a familiar uneasy feeling.
I only stopped for a moment before hitting the 'accept call' button.
"Hi!" I heard that cheery voice of hers ring from the other side of the phone and I could feel my insides warm.
Hey, yourself." I smiled. "What's up, Em?"
"Nothing much, I just feel like we haven't talked that much." She paused for a while before adding shyly, "And I miss you."
The warmth spread to my cheeks. "I really missed you too."
I heard her giggle and god, was it the most adorable sound ever. "Good to know. What have you been up to?"
Figuring out my sexuality and pining over you.
"Nothing much, just the usual." Liar. "What about you?"
"Just been thinking about you," she said casually and my heart fluttered.
I cleared my throat. "Any interesting stories lately?"
I heard another heavenly laugh. "Too many!"
She jumped right into it, not stopping once and honestly, I never wanted her to. Her voice in my ear was a comfort and I held onto it for as long as I could.
We talked and laughed for hours and I didn't even notice until I glanced at the clock on my wall. Time passed too quickly whenever I was with her, I always felt like it wasn't enough. It never was.
But then again, an infinite lifetime with her would still feel too short.
"And then, Mack ran out of the house with our dad chasing her in only his towel and shower cap with his back scrubber!" she laughed unrestrained, not holding it back and lighting up the entire world with it.
"Oh my god!" I laughed along with her. "How did she even pull that off? I can't believe I missed that!"
"See? This is why you should come over more often!"
I didn't know how to respond but it was fine because she started speaking again.
"Wow, I didn't realise the time! I should probably head to bed."
"Yeah, me too," feeling disappointed that she was gonna hang up soon even though I let out a yawn. "But I guess I'll see you tomorrow?"
"For sure! Good night, Ava."
"Night, Em."
"..."
"..."
"Are you still there?" she asked me.
"Uh, yeah?" I replied. "Put down the phone."
"No, you!" She giggled.
I smiled from hearing it. "You!"
"Ugh, fine! Bye."
"Okay, bye bye."
"..."
"..."
"Hello?"
"Emma," I breath out in a light chuckle. "Go sleep."
"Okay! Okay, for good this time, bye."
"Bye," I laughed and before I could stop myself, I added, "I love you."
And I shot up, frozen in place. It wasn't what I say, it was the way I did. Soft and vulnerable and definitely not just a friend proclaiming her platonic love to her best friend.
I heard Emma suck in a sharp breath as if she caught onto it too, and the line went dead silent.
"Ava-"
I heard her whisper but I pulled my phone away from me as if it was poison eating away at my flesh and hit the 'end call' button, tossing it beside me. I didn't hear her finish her sentence and I wasn't sure if I could handle it if I did.
Shit!
I hit my palm against my face and slid it down, groaning. How was I gonna face her tomorrow?
Just then, I heard my phone go off. The ringtone I had set just for Emma played and I swear I felt my heart stop.
Nervously, I glanced down at my phone to see the notification that popped up.
'I love you too <3'
Warmth spread through my body and I let out an involuntary grin. I fell back onto the bed with my arm covering across my face.
I glanced back at the message and made a high-pitched squeal that I never in a million years thought would come out of my mouth. Leave it to Emma to make me do things I normally wouldn't.
My heart raced in my chest.
She may not have meant it the way I have but it didn't matter because hearing her tell me she loved me was all I needed.
That was another thing about having a crush on your best friend; the I love you's were up for interpretation.
I placed the phone on my chest and let my arms sprawl out on the bed. Whatever sleepiness I had left my body, there was no way I could go to bed now.
So instead, I let my mind roam but this time, willingly. I let my thoughts free fall through a million different possibilities as the night turned to day.
I watched the sun rise.
And I smiled.
Because falling in love with my best friend was messy and complicated and heart-shattering. But it was also full of excitement and exhilaration and anticipation.
It was rollercoaster of emotions, full of ups and downs and twist and turns and even loops, but that's what made it thrilling. And for the first time in my normal life, I had something to keep me on my toes.
And I wouldn't have changed a thing.
Was my best friend also in love with me? I didn't know. Would I ever know? Maybe, maybe not. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't at least a little curious to know how she feels, be it good or bad. Maybe someday I'll ask her. Maybe I'll get to hold her. Maybe she'll never speak to me again.
But until then, all I had were the stories I've made up in my mind.
(More fics!)

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: REUNITED PART 2 (FANFIC)
"Lately, I've been, I've been thinking
I want you to be happier, I want you to be happier
So I'll go, I'll go
I will go, go, go~" Jedediah & Octavius finishes singing Happier by Bastille & Marshmello.
"WOAHH!" The crowd cheered at the miniatures karaoke performance.
"Great singing guys! That was amazing!" Larry compliments the cowboy & Roman soldier.
"I thank you" Octavius smiles.
"Thanks , Gigantor!" Jededaiah waves.
"You should sing my darling , I would love to hear your voice" Teddy said as he kisses Sacagawea's hand.
"I guess I can perform a song" Sacagawea blushes as she makes her way in the center of the crowd with the microphone in her hand. Ankmenrah was in charge of the music & turned on This Is Me by Keala Settle.
Sacagawea closes her eyes & began to sing.
"I am not a stranger to the dark
Hide away, they say
'Cause we don't want your broken parts
I've learned to be ashamed of all my scars
Run away, they say
No one'll love you as you are
But I won't let them break me down to dust
I know that there's a place for us
For we are glorious
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be, this is me
Look out 'cause here I come
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh
Another round of bullets hits my skin
Well, fire away 'cause today, I won't let the shame sink in
We are bursting through the barricades and
Reaching for the sun (we are warriors)
Yeah, that's what we've become (yeah, that's what we've become)
I won't let them break me down to dust
I know that there's a place for us
For we are glorious
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be, this is me
Look out 'cause here I come
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh
This is me
and I know that I deserve your love
(Oh-oh-oh-oh) 'cause there's nothing I'm not worthy of
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh)
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out. This is brave, this is proof
This is who I'm meant to be, this is me
Look out 'cause here I come (look out 'cause here I come)
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum (marching on, marching, marching on)
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down. I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out. I'm gonna send a flood
Gonna drown them out
Oh , this is me~"
The crowd cheered loudly & Teddy was in shock but also he of course enjoyed his lover's singing , it was fantastic.
"You sounded beautiful my dear!"
Teddy kisses her cheek.
"Thank you , Teddy!"
Sacagawea smiles widely and kisses her lover back.
"More Microphones coming up! & Who wants to go next?" Lancelot asked & turns toward Larry with a smirk. "How bout' you dangly bells?"
"Nah , I'm good. You guys can have fun–"
"Then what's the point in being here? Come on!" Lancelot hands Larry the Microphone.
"O-Okay...I guess...I'm not good at singing but I'll do it for you guys"
The music began and in Larry's head was like hey , I know this song...
Well , here goes nothing...
"D-Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind
Wanting to start again...."
Great, now I'm in my feelings...
I can totally relate to the plastic bags I see out on the streets...
But Larry continues "D-Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards
One blow from caving in
Do you ever feel already buried deep
Six feet under scream
But no one seems to hear a thing..."
"Do you know that there's still a chance for you
'Cause there's a spark in you" His son joins in too.
"You just gotta ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July~!" Lancelot comes in with another Mic along with Jedediah & Octavius singing the next line.
"Cause baby you're a firework
Come on show 'em what your worth
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y!"
"Baby you're a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
You're gonna leave 'em fallin' down down down!" Lancelot smiles & looks over at Octavius.
Octavius smiles back & waves at the knight as Jedediah crosses his arms looking away from the two interacting.
Tilly comes in to sing with them as well "Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It's always been inside of you, you, you
And now it's time to let it through!"
Lancelot kneels down beside the table the miniature men stood & sang , looking at Octavius "Cause baby you're a firework
Come on show 'em what your worth
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y!"
Octavius blushes slightly causing Jedediah to look at them in disgust.
Oh yeah , Lance slot?
Jed turned his best friend facing him & sang "Baby you're a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make 'em go Oh, oh, oh!"
"You're gonna leave 'em fallin' down down down~" Octavius sang back as he & Jed made eye contact. Jedediah stared back enjoying the moment with his best friend.
"Boom, boom, boom!" Attila & Laaa sang.
"Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon" Tilly sang as she stroked Laaa's hair.
"Boom, boom, boom!" Laaa along with Attila sang again.
"Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon" Larry & Nick finished the last line before everyone clapped their hands & cheered loudly.
The president jumps onto his horse along & shouted "Can I have everyone's attention before we go back to our places? Thank you! I would like to thank our previous night guard, most of all, our dearest friend Larry Daley & his son Nick Daley for visiting us after seven years! We are all happy to see you two again , really!"
"I am also happy to see all of you again. I'm glad we had this kind of night toget–" Larry started coughing but just for a couple of seconds before finishing "Y-Yeah , I'm happy to be here tonight with all of you!"
Nick found it strange how his Dad has been feeling about his health. He notices that he's been coughing & had chest pain earlier. If it seems to get out of hand , Nick will have to confront his Dad to see a doctor. Right now, his Dad is just saying I'm fine & won't admit he's not feeling well.
Everyone was getting to their places before sunrise. Teddy kisses Sacagawea before she heads back to her display.
Before Jedediah can go to his display , he felt a hand grab his shoulder. "Hey Jedediah?" It was Octavius.
"Hey , What is it?" Jedediah asked.
"You okay?"
"O-Of course! Why wouldn't I be?" Jed smiles nervously.
"Y-You seem to be very...I don't know...jealous? When me & Lance are together" Octavius frowned.
Ohhh , right....
"I'm not jealous" The cowboy denies. It was a lie though , Jededaiah was jealous but doesn't want to admit it.
"Oh okay then. I'll see you later tonight" Octavius & Jedediah chest bump each other before leaving to their displays.
"Hey Larry?" Ankmenrah came up to him.
"Oh , hey Ank , need anything before you go?" Larry asked.
"I just wanted to say how it was a delight to see you again. I'm glad you came to see us tonight. One of the best nights we've ever had in so long" Ank smiled.
"I'm glad I came too. Me & Nick were very busy & we didn't have any free time as much. But it's good to see you Ank. How are things going back in London?" Larry had to ask.
"Wonderful!" Ankmenrah said cheerfully.
"That's good to hear. Alright , I'll see ya" Larry patted Ank on the shoulders before walking to Teddy.
"Tonight has been wonderful , Lawrence. Glad you could be here with us" Teddy & his horse makes his way to their spot.
Larry started feeling light-headed & grabs onto the president's saddle.
"Oh dear , are you okay my son?" Teddy asked worriedly.
"Y-Yeah, I'm okay & uh...I'm glad I came" Larry formed a smile.
"Great! Well, Lawrence, sunrise is here , welcome back!" Teddy smiles as he pulls out his sword as the sun had set.
"Thanks Ted" Larry smiles.
"Hey Dad? Ready?" Nick asked.
"Yeah , lets go home" Larry & his son walks towards the main entrance by Tilly.
"See you again tonight Mr. Daley?" Tilly asked.
"Yes! I'll come again!" Larry said before he and Nick walks out the museum & down the steps.
"Hey Dad?" Nick started.
"Yes?" Larry looks at his son.
"Are you okay? You seem to be sick. Is there anything I can do for you?"
"I'm fine Nicky. Don't worry about me. Besides , I will let you know if there's anything. I think I just need some rest"
"Did you talk to your Boss?" Nick asked.
"Not yet. I'll call him when I get home"
Later after Nick goes off to work...
Larry is now back at home. In bed , feeling more ill & tired. Due to his health right now, he called the school to let them know he wasn't coming.
Larry began to cough again. It was more of a violent cough that made him cough blood onto tissue. It was a lot of blood that not all of it stayed on the tissue.
"Oh no"

Away from the “hustle and bustle” of the sea swept shores of Egypt and Jordan there is another world of sand, completely different from over the mountains. And the ancient culture of the people, the Bedouin, reflects their surroundings in a way that only ancient nomads can. With a couple of different experiences in a couple different countries I’ve gotten the smallest glimpse into people as varied as any other.
Sharm El-Sheikh
The day of arrival in the city of Sharm El-Sheikh on Egypt’s North Eastern Red Sea shore was hot with and extra warm sense of welcoming. The sign outside the airport does say “WELCOME TO THE CITY OF PEACE” after all, and in Arabic, English, and Russian to boot, and in that order.
With all of the industry that has been built up along the highways, the theme parks surrounded by many businesses on every street, it’s not difficult to imagine this place filled with people, talking, cheering, and laughing. But it was empty. Streets barren with an eerie silence. With the misunderstanding of increased danger in these countries, tourism has faltered, leaving once thriving areas deserted.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
That first early evening, hours before the sun would set, we were picked up at our hotel, SUNRISE Montemare Resort, picked up another couple, from Cairo, celebrating their recent marriage, and driven between 20-30 minutes out to a ATV (all-terrain vehicle) rental place. As part of the tour we already had paid for the rental, but the workers attempted the up-sell with professional photos of us on the quads. We opted out of that since our guide took photos of us with our phones, not the best quality, but it works.
With true desert fashion sense, and face protection, in mind our guide also wrapped our heads in the scarves we brought. Covering all but our eyes.
As a more experienced quad driver I followed the guide as we rode down a worn and crusty highway and then off into pure desert. I tried not be too close or even follow the same route as he rode because I was looking for the possible jumps along this rough, but well traveled road. Even as we made our way further and further outside “civilization” we could still see the locals, riding around the desert on their ATVs: motorcycles, quads, anything, just like we were.
For anyone who might has been getting tired and/or experience too sore of hands to continue holding down the throttle. We had a rest stop in a Bedouin campsite. A family set up a small café where we could buy some tea or snacks, but since we were leaving soon we just enjoyed the shade on squishy pillows.
After about 10 minutes we continued on to the final destination, a stage in front of a two level audience area complete with areas for hookah and tables for the Bedouin dinner that we would be served before the performances start. Like in the café earlier the colorful fabrics of the rugs, pillows, and tapestries stand out among the beige desert sand and mountain ranges.
Before the sun went down we were taken to the top of a hill nearby were we could take photographs of the landscape.
And then my mother and I then took our second camel ride of the trip. It was fully guided, we were kept on ropes the entire time, so sadly I wasn’t able to break out the camel or get her to go any faster than a leisurely stroll. Although riding slowly did make it easier to take pictures while riding.
Once the sun had slid behind the western mountain range our guide, the couple, and my mother and I were relaxing on the cushions around the table drinking Bedouin tea, the best tea I’ve ever had. Dinner is called and the show begins.
Dancers of different styles grace the stage, including: a belly dancer, a Tanoura dancer, and one man who danced with knives, swords, and even fire.
Before heading back we walked away from the lights of the stage and stared deep into the night sky, identifying and learning about the constellations that glowed so brightly above our heads.
As the night drew to a close we rode the quads back to the bus and eventually said goodbye to a few new friends.
Wadi Rum
A protected area in southern Jordan with a long history of habitation and acclaim, not just for it’s natural beauty either, most would recognize the landscape due to it being the backdrop in two little known movies called The Martian and Lawrence of Arabia (and months after we left, Rouge One: A Star Wars Story).
Around 13:00 we stopped for lunch at a beautiful, open air, air-conditioned restaurant. Just like in Egypt the colors, this time mostly reds, stood out from the washed out colors of the desert around it.
My mother and I were both given the wonderful tea and the food was placed on the table in front of us. The dishes looked, and tasted wonderful, but I couldn’t help feeling a slight tinge of guilt. It was Ramadan, and even though my mother and I are not followers of Islam and therefore do not fast, our guide and the restaurant owners and workers did, so eating in front of them felt a bit callous (but we did anyway).
With lunch over, I ran over to the horses that were saddled up and ready to ride. Of course I chose the younger one, that was said to be more difficult to control, but that didn’t faze me, my horsemanship lessons would definitely pay off.
Making a large circle around and through a mountain range, at first the horses were stubborn at wanting to go any faster than a walk, but once we left the “trail” the horse I was riding was much more willing to leave the other two in his dust. We galloped across the land and with the wind rushing by me I hadn’t felt that kind of freedom in so long. Every so often the horse and I would slow to give the others a chance to catch up, or in the case of the longest galloping section both my feet fell out of the stirrups and I was forced to hold on only with my thighs (thank gawd I have always had mighty thighs). Continuing on the trek, we came to a canyon. Still riding the horses we made our way through the rough terrain, which was complete with large scattered bushes, a shallow river with a small waterfall, and collapsing rock faces. Maybe it was the increase of danger, but this was my second favorite part of the ride, after the loss of control while the horse was in its full gallop only 20 minutes before.
Because time insists on moving forward the exploration ride came to an end, and now we would be going on another trip, further this time, in a car.
While riding around the desert in the back of a covered truck we made periodic stops to get better views of the set pieces of those films and to simply take in the amazing rock formations.
There was a point in which I wanted to climb up a canyon wall, but the guide wouldn’t let me. Even if I took off my shoes, we didn’t have any of the necessary safety equipment – boring.
I, therefore, had to settle for climbing up rocky hills instead, still wearing my wedge sandals. As I climbed the rocky pebbles fell out from under me, so I had to sometimes use both hands to maintain my stability. Other areas were covered in sand, while this may look easier to climb to the untrained eye the sand was so fine that it would sink as soon as a step was made and the displaced sand would slide down the hill, so I stuck with the rocks I could see.
From the top, the ‘Martian’ landscape was laid out ahead of me. The red sand was a bit less saturated than in the movie and small bushes had grown in random locations. This made me a bit upset; that, while filming, the crew pulled out every single bush to create the Mars landscape. They ruined the homes of animals that lived out there; they created a situation where too much weathering could hurt the future of the area. But they didn’t care, as long as they got the shot.
We moved along, taking in the vast desert ahead of us, passing wild camels, and staring at bugs on the ground. Within the next couple hours we came to a semi permanent Bedouin site for another short break with more tea and a history lesson.
Lawrence of Arabia, or T.E. Lawrence, actually lived among the Bedouin people here. Naturally they would choose this area to film when they made the movie, released in 1962. And unlike turning a landscape into another planet, here they had places were the real man stood, where he led the Bedouin peoples in working together to solidify their independence. The one camp where we stopped was not only home to T.E. Lawrence for a time just to be with the peoples we wanted to help, but also because it classifies as an archaeological site, which he studied.
Being an archy myself I was fascinated by the petroglyphs on the canyon walls. They are so intricate and perfect that it’s hard to imagine that they are thousands of years old, the writing as well. I adore when people currently live among the ancient marks and highly respect it all as well. We can all learn from people like this, the feelings of harmony are both amazing and wonderfully overwhelming.
Before we left we looked at the more modern rock carving created by the Bedouin people in the late 1910s for their Lawrence of Arabia, who was honored with the same title as a tribal chief.
While we weren’t bestowed with such an honor, we had been welcomed into the lives of kind people, and were given a breif look into how they live. Then, just like the hero from a western, we left the camp, riding off into the sunset, to explore another day.

Barbados holiday guide: the best beaches, restaurants, bars and places to stay
You dont need a pop stars budget to enjoy the palm trees and sunny Caribbean sea of this popular island. Genie Austin reveals her homelands best beaches, cheap eats, rum shops and typically tropical activities
When I tell people Im from Barbados, I usually get some variation of the same response. Ooh, paradise, they say, as they conjure up coconut trees, tropical drinks, bright sunshine and foam-crested azure waves.
But on an island where holidays can come at shockingly high prices, this idea of paradise feels woefully beyond the reach of the average traveller. However, as every Bajan knows, the charms of this tiny coral island between the Caribbean and the Atlantic can be unlocked without breaking the bank at a luxury hotel or being limited by a package deal.
There are plenty of charming low-cost hotels, cheap-and-cheerful eateries and bars, under-the-radar beaches and free or low-cost fun activities to be enjoyed if you know where to look.
Barbados map
WHAT TO DO
Take a hike
Barbados doesnt have soaring peaks, waterfalls, rivers or tropical rainforests like some of its neighbours. Nevertheless, it is a tropical island, and its vegetation can be lush, wild, and breathtakingly beautiful. Hike Barbados is a local organisation that conducts free hikes through less accessible areas. Its three-hour hikes run throughout the year, with morning walks starting at 6am, afternoon walks at 3.30pm, and moonlight walks at 5.30pm. barbados.org/hike.htm
Watch the sun sunrise at Farley Hill
Old 19th-century Sugar Plantation House, Farley Hill. Photograph: Alamy
At least once during every visit to Barbados, we get up 45 minutes before dawn and drive to Farley Hill national park to watch the sunrise. Farley Hill, a ruined plantation house, is worth a visit on its own merits, but try sitting atop the hill in its grounds overlooking the Atlantic one cool morning, and watch the sky gradually lighten before the sun finally makes its dramatic appearance. All the while, blackbirds and wood doves lend their approval to this feat of nature, as the wind whistles through the large casuarina trees along the hilltops ridge. Its an unforgettable experience. And although its an isolated spot, its quite safe. On our last visit we noticed the park has added an overnight security guard at the entrance. barbados.org/fhill.htm
Catch a drive-in movie
I grew up going to open-air, drive-in cinemas, so was surprised to find theyre not the norm everywhere. Theres still one in Barbados, the Globe Drive-In in Vauxhall, and I always go when Im home because its a unique experience. Tickets are 6. If your accommodation will permit it, take blankets and pillows for a picnic under the stars while you watch your flick. Youll be almost entirely among locals, and when the film reaches a dramatic moment like the satisfying death of a villain be ready for the chorus of car horns beeping their approval. globedrivein.mobi
See the Christmas parade
Photograph: Alamy
If you have the good fortune to be in Barbados in the festive season, head to Queens Park in the capital, Bridgetown, on Christmas morning, where dressed up people promenade in a ritual going back over 100 years. The park, formerly the grounds of the Commander of the British troops in the West Indies, was acquired by the government in the early 1900s. In 1907 it commissioned the Royal Barbados Police Band to hold free morning Christmas concerts to establish it as a peoples park. Youll be blown away by the colourful and outlandish outfits, sexy Santa costumes and splendid ballgowns. Walking around in 30C heat, rum punch in hand, caught up in the festivity of a tropical Christmas, sums up for me the meaning of peace on Earth and goodwill to all men.
BEST BEACHES
Barbados has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean and although in recent years erosion has taken its toll, there are still many unspoilt gems. The key is to choose a beach based on what you want to do, or not do.
Paradise Beach
Photograph: Getty Images
The west coast of Barbados is fringed by the calm Caribbean, so is ideal for relaxing. I have a few favourites here, but Paradise Beach is my top pick. It gets its name from a hotel that was here until the 1980s. With its closure, and efforts to open another hotel stalled for years, its an oasis of peace, interrupted only by the occasional boat or jet ski. Most visitors have no idea the beach exists you get there by walking south from neighbouring Batts Rock Beach but its a wonderful place for relaxing, swimming and enjoying the peace.
Paynes Bay
Photograph: Hans-Peter Merten/Getty Images
My second-favourite beach on this coast is a great place to try jet skiing, sailing and waterskiing, and for finding a boat to go swimming with hawksbill and leatherback turtles. There are organised tours from 80, but the many local operators of jet skis and boats will do deals for around half that for a 30-minute excursion, including snorkelling equipment. Paynes Bay is a short walk from the Sandy Lane Hotel beach, for some discreet spotting of celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Wahlberg, and Naomi Watts.
Pebbles Beach
For a more meditative beach experience head just south of Bridgetown. The water in this sheltered bay is quite still, making it an excellent place for standup paddleboarding (SUP). Paddle Barbados offers classes at 50 for a 90-minute group class, and SUP Yoga at 30 for a 75-minute class. paddlebarbados.com
WHERE TO EAT
Eating out in Barbados can be very expensive, and food costs can exceed those of accommodation. Happily, though, there are plenty of good inexpensive eateries on both sides of the island.
Sand Dunes Bar and Restaurant, Windy Hill
This restaurant on the islands rugged east coast is one of my favourites. The food is simple and unpretentious but fresh and full of flavour. The menu changes daily and consists of local favourites such as breadfruit coucou (mashed with butter and milk), salt fish with gravy, and a salad or side vegetables. There may also be fried flying fish served with rice and peas, and macaroni pie. A full meal will cost around 12 a head. Ermy Bourne Highway, Windy Hill, +1 246 422 9427
Animal Flower Cave, North Point
Aside from the delicious, if slightly pricy, food rotis from 13, salads from 10 what makes this restaurant stand out is its location on the cliffs of North Point, where between December and April humpback whales can be spotted playing in the surf. Beneath the restaurant is the islands only accessible sea cave, Animal Flower cave, known for its fascinating sea anemones (animal flowers). Guided visits adult 8, child 4. +1 246 439 8797, animalflowercave.com
Orange Street Grocer, Speightstown
Bajans are not big coffee drinkers, but a handful of places serve really good coffee, and this beautifully designed cafe, with a large terrace overlooking the ocean, is one of them. Its a great place to start the morning or watch the sun go down in the evening. It serves salads, pizza and other light fare, but I find these a little pricey, so usually stick to coffee and one of their tasty desserts, which cost around 6. theorangestreetgrocer.com
Cuzs Fish Shack, near Pebbles Beach
Even if youre not staying on the south coast, pay a visit to this colourful and somewhat ramshackle Barbadian equivalent of a food truck. Cuz first became a favourite among divers and surfers on nearby Pebbles Beach. The cutters the local term for any sandwich made using a bun known as salt bread are filled with fried steakfish, tomato, lettuce, Bajan pepper sauce and a bit of mayo, with optional toppings of cheese or a fried egg. They cost 25 and are delicious with a cold Banks beer or a Plus, an energy drink made from sugar cane. On Facebook
WHERE TO DRINK
Rum shops, everywhere
John Moore Bar; one of many rum shops on the island. Photograph: Alamy
Bajans like to boast that Barbados is the birthplace of rum. Records show that the honour might actually belong to Brazil, but Barbados is the unrivalled champion of the rum shop scene in the Caribbean they have been part of our landscape for more than 300 years. They come in every shape, colour and size, and are much more than just a bar: theyre a place for friends to meet, drink, talk politics, tell jokes, and play dominoes. And they are incredibly cheap. In general, a beer costs about 1.50, a rum punch (a deliciously refreshing concoction of rum, lime juice, sugar cane syrup, a splash of Angostura Bitters and a scrape of nutmeg) is 4, and a small bottle of rum is just 2. The best approach is to simply walk into any shop that catches your fancy they are convivial places where everyone is welcomed.
One Love Bar, Holetown
On one of my return visits, I wandered into this bar with my husband Andrew. Id never been there before, but we were tired and needed a break from the heat. We ordered two bottles of Plus, and were promptly told by one of the patrons, who was already pretty plastered at 3pm, that men dont drink Plus. He then proceeded to pour Andrew some of his white rum, and there followed a pleasant afternoon of aimless, good-natured chatter and much drinking. One Love Bar is a bit of an anomaly among the expensive restaurants and swanky boutiques of the west coast, and were always relieved when we return to see it still there going strong. 1st Street, Holetown, on Facebook
Bay Tavern, Martins Bay
Bajans come from all corners to this east coast fishing village to lime (hang out) and fire a rum. Thursday afternoons are particularly popular, so stop by then as it has a real party atmosphere. It also does lunch and dinner. Local dishes, grilled marlin, rice and peas and fried plantain, say, are delicious at around 10. On Facebook
WHERE TO STAY
South Gap Hotel, St Lawrence Gap

The south coast of Barbados has a party reputation, so this is the place for those whose idea of a perfect holiday involves frequent nights out. The South Gap is a modern hotel with pool, restaurant and bar in St Lawrence Gap, a lively 1.3 km stretch of road in the parish of Christ Church. A studio for two with balcony and mini kitchen costs from 100 B&B. southgapbarbados.com
Beckys by the Sea, Fitts Village
Just across the road from the beach in Fitts Village on the west coast, this modern guesthouse has two en suite rooms from around 50 a night. Guests have use of living areas, several patios and kitchen. Beckys doesnt offer breakfast but promises that youll wake to freshly brewed coffee, herbal teas, local fruit and juice when in season. For more substantial fare, take a bus to Holetown, a few miles up the road, where BeannBagel cafe does a real Bajan breakfast of fried flying fish and bakes (the local version of a pancake) or a more traditional cooked breakfast. beckysbythesea.com

WHAT TO DO
