INTRODUCTION

In our modern economy, packaging is playing a viable and catalytic role. Not only does it protect the contents, but it also contributes to the convenient transportation, storage, and display of products (Gutta et al. 2013). In that context, packaging is one of the fastest growing markets. The global packaging market was valued at $799 billion in 2012. It continues to grow at 4% per year, and it is expected to reach $1 trillion by 2018 (PIRA 2017).

Table 1 shows the packaging market trends. It is evident that plastic packaging has been a strongly growing product segment from 2011 to 2016, which is particularly true for flexible packaging. The growth of plastics is mainly due to its low cost, convenience to use with chemical resistance, processing possibility, transparency, strength, and so on (Khosravi-Darani and Bucci 2015; Nurul Fazita et al.2016). The properties of the synthetic polymers used in plastic materials generally are favorable with respect to the processing of films, hot sealing, printing, and integration with other materials in manufacturing operations (Bharimalla et al. 2017).

The wide usage of plastic packaging has caused concerns about environmental problems in the world (Greene and Tonjes 2014; Rafieian et al. 2014; Campbell et al. 2015; Attaran et al. 2017; Kuswandi 2017). Plastic packaging materials include PP (polypropylene), PET (polyester), polyethylene, polystyrene, and other petroleum-based polymers. Although most of these plastics are recyclable, in many countries post-consumer plastic packaging waste is rarely recycled because of technical and economic constraints. There are about 1 million tons of plastic waste generated annually in China, but only around 20% of it is recycled (He and Nie 2011). A major proportion of the used plastic materials end up as waste, which is either mainly deposited in landfills or contributes to litter on our roadsides, public spaces, and waterways (Gómez and Michel Jr 2013; Jambeck et al. 2015). The strain and stress of environmental balance imposed by plastic packaging materials is a driving force to develop sustainable packaging materials (Peelman et al. 2014; Scarfato et al. 2015). Natural fibers obtained from forestry and agricultural residues are renewable, completely or partially recyclable, and biodegradable (Johansson et al. 2012; Rohit and Dixit 2016). Their relatively abundant availability, absence of associated health hazards, toughness, good thermal stability, and easy surface modification, as well as satisfactory mechanical properties make them an attractive alternative for some plastic packaging materials (Azlan and David 2011; Asokan et al. 2012; Zaman et al. 2012; Zhu et al. 2014; Pan et al. 2016; Rohit and Dixit 2016). Packaging based on cellulosic fibers plays an essential role in the storage and transport of goods. In such applications, the cellulosic fibers often contribute greatly to the strength and structural stability of a package. The fibers can be used as self-standing thin films, as filler in composites, and as coating to provide high barrier properties (Ferrer et al. 2017). In addition, the fibers can be used to fabricate cushioning packaging materials, and they can serve as reinforcements in biodegradable foam (Bénézet et al. 2012; Kaisangsri et al. 2012; Ago et al. 2016) and as molded pulp products (Didone et al. 2017).

In current practices, materials based on fossil resources, mainly petroleum, hold a dominant position with respect to the preparation of barrier layers to resist the permeation of oxygen gas, water vapor, and other compounds that may affect the quality of a product (Ferrer et al.2017). Typical materials for barrier polymer films with thickness between about 10 μm and 250 μm are ethylenevinyl alcohol (EVOH), polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), and polyamide (PA) (Barlow and Morgan 2013). The most widely used plastic cushioning packaging products are EPS (expanded polystyrene) and EPE (expanded polyethylene). As post-consumer waste, those polymers are difficult to reuse and recycle because of technical and economic constraints, and they can easily produce chemical contaminants during their disposal by incineration or landfilling (Greene and Tonjes 2014). The ideal solutions entail substituting for them with degradable and sustainable materials.

This review aims to give an overview of natural fibers replacing plastics for cushioning and barrier packaging as well as to provide state-of-the-art examples of cushioning and barrier packaging based on natural fibers to make clear the future prospects, challenges and research and development needs.

NATURAL FIBERS AND THEIR KEY CHARACTERISTICS

Natural fibers can be obtained from plants including wood, agriculture crops grown mainly to obtain fibers (such as flax, hemp, and sisal), and as the by-products of some crops that have other primary uses (such as wheat, corn, rice, and sugar, etc.) using appropriate physical and chemical treatments. The plants mostly consist of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Pectin, ash, and extractives can be found in lower quantities. The properties of fibers are different depending on the processing technologies, which affect the chemical composition and morphology of natural fibers. Therefore, the applications in packaging materials are different. The key characteristics of natural fibers have been introduced in terms of general cellulosic fibers (pulp), cellulose nanofiber, and regenerated cellulose fibers for packaging (Fig. 1).

Indus Valley Civilization:

Indian handloom dates back to the Indus Valley civilization; even in ancient times, Indian fabrics were exported to Rome, Egypt, and China, and in earlier times, every village had its own weavers who made all of the villagers' clothing requirements such as sarees, dhotis, and so on. There were specific wool weaving centres in some areas where it was cold in the winter, but everything was hand spun and hand woven.

Natural Raw Materials:

Traditionally, the entire cloth-making process was self-sufficient. Cotton silk wool was obtained from farmers, foresters, or shepherds, and the cotton was cleaned and transformed by weavers or the agricultural labour community. Small handy instruments, such as the famous spinning wheel, also known as charkha, were used in the process. This hand spun yarn was mostly turned into cloth by women handloom weavers.

Unfair Competition:

There are many weaving styles that use machine spun yarn today, and these fabrics are referred to as handloom, while fabrics made from handspun yarn are referred to as khadi. Though textile and spinning mills continued to operate in independent India, and loom khadi was given extensive protection from unfair competition, the fabric was widely used and affordable to all. However, in the current scenario, since 1985, and particularly since the 1990s liberalisation, the handloom sector has faced competition from cheap imports and design imitations from power looms, as well as a significant decline in government funding and policy protection.

Whereas the cost of natural fibre yarn has risen dramatically in comparison to artificial fibre, the cost of natural fabric has risen significantly. This makes it unaffordable for the general public, but wages for handloom weavers have been frozen for the past decade or so. Due to their inability to compete with cheaper poly-mixed fabrics, many weavers are abandoning weaving in favour of unskilled labour, and many have been reduced to extreme poverty.

Handloom is a timeless fabric that is unique in that no two fabrics are alike. Of course, the output depends on the weaver's skill set, but even if two weavers with similar skill sets weave the same fabric, the results will be different in some way because each fabric is a reflection of the weaver's moods. When a weaver is angry, the fabric is tight, whereas when he is sad, the fabric is loose, making each piece unique. In India, different weaving styles exist in different parts of the country, and within the same region, there can be as many as 20 to 30 different styles ranging from simple plain fabrics to tribal motifs and geometric designs.

This is the Shuttle Bus to Nagoya Hill Mall. Take note that the timing may vary in the future as this is for Chinese News Year Schedule. Estimation timing to reach Nagoya Hill Mall is about 45 min. When going home, take at the main entrance where the bus driver alights us. There will be a Holiday INN Staff waiting for us.

Lamoist is one of the best Batam cake that we have tried. It costs about SGD30 for 1 whole cake. Most Batam cakes from other brands relatively have the same price. For the cheap and good cake, recommended buying Layerious Batam cake at B1 outside Hypermart ( Rp 95,000 for Butter cake, the assorted flavor is about Rp 160,000).

At Night, we went for Spa at Tea Tree Spa which cost around Rp50,000 (Full Body Massage) inclusive GST and Service charge for 1 hours. It is definitely cheaper than SG. All their staffs are female. And of course, no photo taking in the Spa. Received a complimentary drink (Lemongrass or Ginger Tea) as well.

After the massage, We went for karaoke at Holiday Inn Resort at 10am. Sadly, We forgot to take some photos. However, despite the language manual in Korean, there are still a lot of English, Malay, Indo and Chinese song to choose. The price is way much cheaper than SG for 1hour.

On the 2nd day, we had free breakfast (Halal) near the reception area. The rating is 7/10. Fyi, the only non-halal restaurant is Dragon-Inn

Scrambled Egg and Hotdog are the best food that the chefs cooked.

There are games room as well but need to sign in from the same counter as karaoke for the equipments.

For those of you who don’t know, I can draw. I enjoy sketching. That’s why I created Anais as my blog’s icon 7 years ago. One thing leads to another, Anais was too high maintenance and she was let go - I assure you, she’s in a happier place now... now that doesn’t sound right, oh well. I did not stop drawing. I kept drawing until the day comes where I decided to share my art with the world. 

Inspired by the moon that shines over me as I went camping last year, I decided to draw the different phases of the moon. Accompanying the phases is a moon tarot card. The card that pushes you to trust your instincts and intuition so that you could be lead to higher levels of understanding. To allow the moon to shine on the creatures that are in hiding the truth and the facts that we need to see.

Two Days in Singapore...

Someday, I will live behind interesting windows above a shop. I will have shutters and impossible casings to treat. Also someday, we will get to a city and I will have our itinerary already made. Until then, the morning-of-Pinterest-scramble agenda seems to work just fine.

We had two days to explore, and zero plans -- and managed to see a LOT.

We stayed near Clarke Quay, a delightful detail I thanked past-me for when I went out to get sandwiches to take back to the room, after we’d finally draggled off the Bintan Ferry at 9 p.m. It was all lit up with river boats and outside restaurant lanterns, and it was right outside our door. (Swissotel Merchant Court, also chosen for its swimming pool and the online deal I got, but the waterfront location was happily ideal.)

 Our first real destination was the Sri Mariamman Temple, with its pyramid of ceramic figures, it’s the oldest Hindu Temple in Singapore.

We shucked our shoes off outside, and went in. Inside, were active worships in different enclaves, each with its own live soundtrack.

A mix of spectators and practitioners, we watched and talked about how religious practice is a good way to clear your mind and prepare it for good thoughts. 


Just outside the Temple grounds is a taxi stand. Now, I’m sure the Singapore train system is awesome, and usually I’m all about a train -- but when you have a pair of short legs with you, every step counts. Also, AUGUST IN SINGAPORE. You guys. I don’t know if you’ve ever been poached, but this climate is an excellent approximation of what being steam-boiled alive must feel like.

Anyway, taxis are cheap (during the day, the flag drop is half what you’d pay in Tokyo) and plentiful. We grabbed one and zipped to the Singapore Flyer, their answer to the London Eye. Frankie had spotted it lit up on our way into the city (PS Hey, Singapore! Super-awesome-excellent-best-ever job having your airport just 15 minutes outside of the city. Super side-eye to Narita and its convenient-to-NOTHINGness.) Frankie was sure she needed to ride it, and was positively not going to get scared.

So up, we went.

It takes a full 30 minutes to make ONE rotation, an excruciating pace that will 100% mess with your equilibrium an introduce you to a whole new way to get motion sickness! It’s the gift that keeps giving!!!

It is totally pretty cool though.

The original plan had us riding the wheel and heading straight to the Gardens by the Bay, but we were ahead, and hungry. A five-dollar cab back to the hotel had us exploring Clark Quay for lunch options. In a motto that could be printed on our family crest, We Do Not Travel to Eat. That is to say, it’s enough to get us all to a place to SEE things, when it comes to fuel, with one kid palate and one dietary-restricted palate, we give ourselves a pass on local food (for the most part, to follow, and etc.)

That, and we kind of collect Hooters locations. Ryan is from the land of the ORIGINAL FIRST EVER Hooters, and so if we see one in a place that might be different or interesting? Look, some people go to Hard Rock. We go to a place with more distinctive costuming.

After lunch, we tucked up to the hotel for a tiny nap, so we could all stay up for the lit up gardens after dark. As we snagged another taxi, the concierge mentioned, “Ah, yes! The show at 7:45!” Ooh, a SHOW, too? We thought we were just going to see the giant LED trees, all lit.

We got to the park, and found the ticket counter for the bridge that goes through the trees. An 8$ ticket, as opposed to the 30$ ticket that would take you into the conservatories -- let’s face it, maybe some kids like plants 30$ worth, but ours doesn’t. This was the perfect solution.

We stood in the line to go up, trying to judge if we’d get to watch from the sky as the sky darkened. The show started with its booming proclamation that it was a “Salute to Musical Theatre” (ACE) just as we made it into the elevator. 

Up we went, and watched the trees flicker to the beat, as the bridge SWAYED in the dark, and I managed to only sort of panic. It doesn’t look high, but it’s narrow, fairly open, and totally moves. Beware if you have height things.

The lights pulsed to Phantom and Evita songs, floral lights against the backdrop of the marching rows of skyline sparkles.

Day One ended with us perched on the steps of the Quay, watching the bustle still filling the restaurants at 10 p.m., and tracing the paths of lit river boats as they ducked under the bridge.
