Cette fois c’est bien fini , la journée d’hier a été notre retour à Paris . Nous avons pris un taxi avec nos deux gros sacs c’était plus simple , le vol de nuit avec Air France s’est très bien passé même si nous avons attendu deux heures de plus; n’ayant pas de correspondance à Paris pour nous , pas de problème, pour certains ça complique toujours les choses . Retour sous un ciel d’automne, il y a encore 8h nous étions en été à New Delhi mais très pollué. Un petit choc thermique nous a contraint à nous couvrir d’une polaire pour Thierry et d’une Doudoune pour moi . Le passage à la douane se fait automatiquement en scannant notre passeport, il n’y a plus d'agent, juste un peu de personnel qui oriente les arrivants sur le chemin à suivre avant de récupérer les bagages. Nous étions au terminal 2. Le taxi a mis un peu plus de 39 minutes avant de nous déposer devant notre porte, avenue d’Italie. Auparavant il y avait une Navette Air France qui amenait les personnes qui le souhaitaient jusqu'aux gares Parisiennes, mais elle a été supprimée, pour une fois qu'il y avait quelque chose de pratique dans cet Aéroport...Pas de trop de circulation en ce dimanche matin. On a réglé la somme de soixante cinq euros que nous avons arrondi à soixante dix euros . Le chauffeur semble être un gros fumeur, l’habitacle sentait le tabac froid . Nous sommes partis le 24 octobre, après la déception du 19 et revenus le 10 novembre au matin . Ce treck dans le Haut Mustang fut une belle découverte, difficile pour moi, pour Thierry ce fut plus facile. Les paysages sont grandioses ,désertiques avec peu de végétation, l’érosion des roches crée de véritables tableaux , les couleurs de celles-ci passent de l’ocre au gris avec beaucoup de déclinés, de nuances. Ces villages composés de maisons traditionnelles au murs blancs au style Tibétain, toits terrasses, où le bois ramassé est stocké pour le chauffage et la cuisine, ainsi que certains aliments, couronne le périmètre ,de petites ouvertures. Nous sommes à plus ou moins trois milles mètres d’altitude, l’hiver, il fait très froid . Souvent il y a un monastère qui donne l’importance de la religion Bouddhiste dans cette région . Le panorama des sommets enneigés des Annapurna donne une dimension grandiose , impressionnante qui nous renvoie à notre petite condition humaine . Pour finir et cela a son importance nous avons rencontré deux compagnons de route qui nous ont accompagnés avec beaucoup de professionnalisme et de chaleur humaine . Nous en avons déjà parlé . Autre chose . De rest van de dag hangen we rond in strandtenten, spelen een spelletje, lezen een boekje, drinken een cocktail en hebben we vooral het gevoel onze tijd te verdoen. In Goa kan je op elke straathoek een blik bier kopen en desgewild in je bikini op de stoep gaan liggen. Dat maakt het voor binnenlandse toeristen gewild en bijzonder, voor ons knabbelt het af aan onze veel te korte tijd hier. Jeroen regelt dat we een kayaktour kunnen doen in de uitloper van de rivier om het strand te ontvluchten en dat is, samen met de uitzichten op een rondje hardlopen, het hoogtepunt van ons verblijf. Verder is het ook wel lekker om uit te rusten van alle indrukken tot nu toe.

Wat we hier missen: een stoep langs de weg. Alle weggebruikers, waaronder non-stop claxonerende automobilisten en scooterrijders, koeien en waakse honden, delen dezelfde stoffige tweebaansweg, die daardoor bijzonder onprettig is om langs te lopen. Degene in wiens huis we logeren biedt ons zijn auto te leen aan en hoewel ik dacht autorijden wel tot gevorderdenniveau onder de knie te hebben na een paar vakanties in Italië, is er een héle grote noodsituatie met héél veel adrenaline nodig voordat ik dat hier zelf zou proberen. We zitten dus vast aan ritjes met zijn vaste taxichauffeur en voelen ons daardoor een beetje opgesloten.

Wat ik inmiddels ook mis: rauwe groenten en fruit. In de buitengebieden doe je boodschappen bij kleine groentestalletjes langs de drukkere stukken van de weg, maar daar komen we dus nauwelijks. Ik vraag onze chauffeur om een tussenstop te maken en koop een papaya en een grote, ronde, groene vrucht die ik niet thuis kan brengen. Terug in de auto vraag ik wat ik heb gekocht, het blijkt een avocado te zijn. Die groeien hier, net als cashewnoten en mango.

Beide vruchten zijn nog niet eetrijp dus smokkel ik ze mee in mijn handbagage naar Delhi. Mijn tas wordt er in de scanner uitgepikt door de douane, die op basis van de rontgenbeelden denkt dat ik een kokosnoot mee wil nemen (veeg teken voor de hoeveelheid vruchtvlees rond mijn avocadopit. Later leer ik dat kokosnoten verboden zijn omdat ze door het drukverschil tijdens de vlucht kunnen exploderen). Na overleg met een collega mag ik ze meenemen. Het zit best in de weg, dus tip: reis niet met een papaya en een gigantische avocado in je handbagage.

Niet gelukt: op zijn Goanees pittige vindaloo eten. Zonde omdat: we daar in de eerste plaats al meer voor naar Goa kwamen dan voor het strand. Day 5: Dera Mandawa - Jaipur

13th March 2023

We decided to splash out last night and dined in the hotels signature restaurant Dhaba, 

The restaurant was decked out like an Indian truck stop with food to match, the check was large and my expectations fell well short.

To make up for the shortcomings of Dhaba we decided to retire, once again, to Aura for a nightcap and were lucky enough to catch Jazz Junction playing in their unique and imitable style as we settled down with a bottle of wine to share.

Tony had a charming rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ sung to him and then we stuck around till the wine was finished and listened to the bands Bossa Nova take on various recognisable tunes.

We went to down to breakfast early this morning and opted on a healthy ( ish ) one of fruit and yogurt with a smattering of cheese board.

Our journey to Jaipur was the most comfortable drive so far of this trip, the Tempo of yesterday had been replaced with a Toyota boasting deep leather seats, large windows plus the ride was super smooth. You know you’re onto a winner when the vehicle can get uphill without breaking into a sweat.

I decided to sit up front, just behind and across from the driver to get a better of view and oh my, do I have total respect for Jagdish, our chauffeur. The traffic was horrendous out of Delhi, traffic literally coming from all directions, all of the time.

I could see things from his perspective and how we managed to avoid cars, tuk tuk’s, children, adults, cows, motorbikes, elephants and camels is beyond my comprehension. I spent the journey with my eyes closed and my heart hammering. Jagdish was as cool as ice and manoeuvred us skilfully through the melee.

The cacophony of horns crashed around in my ears and engines revved as we inched through the traffic and out into the freeway which was not as we know it.

Indian motorways do not have road markings so the traffic moved along as one big mass of living, breathing metal, moving in the same direction but jockeying for poll position.

We passed towns and villages, countryside and small holdings, small roadside shacks and large corporate hotels.

Finally we entered the ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur, so called because in the 1900′s the entire city was painted pink in honour of King Edward VII and has remained so ever since.

Up till now we have not seen so much as single begger, however that was about to change in Jaipur.  We were forced to stop at some lights and immediately a gaggle of women sprang out of nowhere, banging on the windows , mimicking putting food in their mouths and holding up babies.

One sight I can’t get out of my mind was a haggard, hard faced women, dirt etched in her face holding up a baby, the poor thing must’ve been premature it was so small, she or he lay there limply in her arms, it’s sad little eyes were blank and dull. I’m not sure that this poor, wretched little baby was still alive, and the picture will haunt me I think for a long time.

Dera Mandawa has risen from the dust of Jaipur and has provided us with an oasis of calm within a bustling and busy city.

Mr Durga Singh Ji greeted us with such pleasure and warmth and led us to his sitting room where we were availed of large, chilled glasses of Kingfisher beer  as we booked in.

Our room is immense, with a bed that would easily fit 4 adults, a ceiling fan to keep us  cool and above us is a balcony with further seating.

Intricate carved pillars surround the bed and beautiful yellow drapes hang from them.  It’s been a long day, and it’s time for bed
