As Clover exits a shop, the noise of laughter catches his attention. They don't pay it any mind. Just a few happy folk enjoying their night, nothing to freak out over. They flick a finger up, nudging their hat to not block his vision.
They duck into an alley, reaching into their inventory. Chees snax, a root beer, candy … Ah! A bowl of warm baked beans they managed to get from the shop. The monster inside was kind enough to accept the rest of their G, if only out of pity. It was fine. Pity be damned, Clover wasn't gonna look a gift horse in the mouth.
Stuck in their thoughts, they didn't notice the soft chucking into their heard the soft thump! of footprints behind them. Sparing a glance, they noticed some young looking monsters behind them.
“Well look what we have here boys. A little human, all alone without their mommy and daddy!" A blue monster with short horns and scales hollered. 2 more monsters stepped behind them. One was tall, with black feathers while the other was no taller than Clover. Their cat ears twitched along with their tail, while one paw came up to gently tug at their red scarf.
“ They're so scrawny, no wonder they're eating scraps. ” The feline monster purred. The sea monster brought their fists together and cracked their knuckles, a dark grin splitting their face. “ And look at that shiny toy they got there. Kid, a little runaway like you doesn't deserve such a valuable item.. Why don't you give it here and we won't pummel you? ” They laughed.
Clover turned to look at the monsters and raised a brow. “ Sorry but I can't. Don't know 'bout you but I like feeling prepared. ” Clover clicked his tongue.
There was no time to react as the blue monster grabbed Clover by their bandana and hoisted them in the air. “ If you wanted to do this the hard way, you could've just asked. ”
The world around them turned dark. As his soul faded into existence they pulled their head back and headbutted the monster.
The monster cried in pain, roughly dropping Clover as they moved their hands to hold their head. Clover landed on the ground, letting out a soft "oof!" as his back hit the floor. His hat, having fell off his head during the impact, gently landed on their face. They quickly snatched the hat off their face. Scraping their hands and knees on gravel and pavement, Clover got up.
Ignoring the increasing pain, they dashed out of the alley, hoping to lose the monsters in a crowd. Their heart pounded in their chest. They could hear those thugs stomping behind them.
‘ What do I do?! I can't hurt them. Augh I just have to keep running! ’ His mind unhelpfully ran with millions of thoughts, every one coming back to the same conclusion: Don't hurt them. That wouldn't be just.
If they where a little more determined...
It wasn't long before they ended up in, what they assumed was, a little shopping market. They ducked and weaved through crowds, ignoring other monsters cries and grunts of annoyance.

For some reason for Clover, it felt like there was an invisible presence nearby them... lurking within the darkness.
A small chill went up their spine, and just behind them they could see a figure emerge from their shadow. It mimicked their shape momentarily before changing to a wispy body with messy hair covering their face except one eye.
"...Hello... there..."
– 🌟 (@passingthroughthenorthstar)
🍀 Clover shivered at the chill, gently gripping their bandana as they looked this way and that. It wasn't until they saw a figure in the shadows did they freeze. This was something straight out of a horror movie they were forbidden to watch as a kid.
🍀 Seeing the figure momentarily shift from his shape to a new one unsettled them further. It wasn't attacking yet so ... maybe it was friendly...?
“ Uh- H-Howdy, pardner! ” He tipped his hat in a polite gesture, “ Might I ask who ya' are...? ”

Clover receives what looks like a big bag of candy! Various caramels, soda candies, and much more are inside. There's a note taped and tied to the top of the bag.
"Enjoy the bag o' candy, deputy! I was gon' get stuff you'd like, but I ended up gettin' ya a mixed variety instead!"
– 🌟 (@passingthroughthenorthstar)
🍀 After reading the note, a small grin inched across his face. They happily pocketed the note and opened the bag. He could already feel the impending sugar rush.

The young cowboy finally broke free from a group of people, doing so with a comical trip and landing on their face with their hat landing beside them. He quickly picked himself up, brushing off loose gravel and dust from the fall. They quickly snatched up their hat and placed it on his head, tracing the edge of it with his index finger before flicking his hat.
Clover wasn't one for rude gestures, but in this moment he figured this one warranted it.
They looked around, checking the crowd of people behind them and making sure those monsters hadn't followed. Unfortunately it didn't get him far, as he was pretty small compared to the mix of humans and monsters that roamed these streets.
‘ How surreal... ’ they thought, ‘ seein' monsters 'n humans alike coexisting without any conflict. ’
Yet they shook their head. This was no time for sad monologues! They let themselves get distracted with the pleasure of food and ended up getting chased. Speaking of which-
Clover glanced down at his hands, only to realize ... he had dropped his bowl of beans when that monster grabbed him! ‘ 'M reeaaally not likin' today. ’ They bitterly thought. After a glance around, they noted that this looked like some sort of shopping market. Perhaps they could bargain a deal with someone and get some food in exchange!
The cowboy began walking around, looking at different stalls and what they had to offer. Most of them looked delicious, yet he wondered if magic based food could quell his hunger. His curiosity piqued when he saw a pair, a human and a brown, anthropomorphic dog approach a very familiar looking monster. Now mind you, the two where a bit away, and the other monster was obscured by some boxes. But they couldn't help but feel a gut-wrenching sense of familiarity as seeing this monster's boots. They had spurs...
Clover could feel his heart pumping in his ears. They crept closer to the boxes, hand moving to quietly remove his hat and behind them. They peeked around the corner of the box...

🍀 Glad that their first reaction was to wait instead of start blasting. This...shadow? seemed friendly! And the mention of Starlo was even more reassurance that they weren't in any immediate danger...
🍀 They did a more formal bow, taking their hat off and holding it to their chest as they did so.

🍀 After being handed the toothpick, they happily took a bite from the burger. Magic coursed through their body. They noted the quiet blip of some of their hp being restored and the tingling sensation of some of his wounds healing. A small giggle slipped out; the curse of being ticklish.
🍀 He idly joked as Starlo walked back to the stand. Quickly finishing their burger, they started looking around at the other stands. There was so much to see and eat! One would think this was some sort of buffet from how many food stands there were.
🍀 There was a particular stand that caught their eye, however. A candy stall that had huge lollipops and jawbreakers on display, along with other assorted candies. They take a tentative step forward, glancing back at Starlo who was still ordering. Curiosity gets the better of them and they scramble to the candy stall to look at the different sweets that they served.
⌬ Boss chuckled to themselves as they watched Clover look around. “ Yer done for, kid.. ” They grinned darkly. With a flick of their wrist, the ball of oil dropped ... onto the ground, as Clover had taken that opportunity to move to a candy stall. An annoyed growl slipped out as they moved from their spot to get a better angle at Clover.
⌬ Hopefully the other two where having a better time...

🍀 Clover gently put a hand on the glass and watched as the chef made their meal. It was so interesting watching something you would soon consume be made. Reminds him when he would watch candy makers in their shops on early mornings.
⌬ Purdy grit their teeth, fangs slightly baring at the action. “ I tell you what, Boss. That kid right there is a real piece of work. Tryin' to fight 'em both at once can prove to be a problem... ” They flexed their claws, watching as the keratin slowly sheathed and unsheathed. It still had that damn kids' blood on it...
⌬ “ Well then what are we supposed to do? They're so close to each other righ' now. ” Krowley squawked, “ Are you implyin' we give up? ” His feathers ruffled at the accusation, eyes squinting at their feline companion. A low growl rumbled in Purdy's throat, “ Of course not! I'm implying we separate them, you squabbling buffoon. Perhaps with your assistance, we can take on the deputy while Boss takes on North Star. ” They idly licked their claws, hoping to get the blood off them.
⌬ “ Purdy, if this doesn't work. I hope you'll take responsibility for yer failure. ” Boss growled, eliciting a scared whine from said monster. “ O-Of course, Boss. ”
🍀 Back with Starlo and Clover, Clover watched patiently as their food was made. However they couldn't ignore the rising ache in their hands and neck. ‘ Just a little bit longer, ’ they told themselves, ‘ These burgers will heal me up fer sure... ’ Their finger twitched against the glass as they suppressed a sharp twinge.

🍀 Clover couldn't help but stare at all the delicious smelling goodness that surrounded him. It was even a little overpowering given how hungry he was! Yet he was quick to look back at Starlo when he asked.
🍀 The deputy waved slightly at the cashier before looking back at the food. Despite it's odd presentation ... damn it looked good! They suppressed the urge to hop the counter and just take the food for themselves.

🍀 Clover playfully rolls his eyes. Hopping off the table and following after Starlo, they look around. So many stalls ... They didn't notice at first just how much monsters were thriving on the surface. A small smile inched across his face.
🍀 It wasn't until they noticed Starlo's empty hands did he remember. Ah, he had a few bags of food with him didn't he...? When did he lose them...? They're snapped out of their thoughts however by being presented a piece of cantaloupe. Clover tried his best to be polite when taking the piece, but the sight of real food and not candy didn't stop him from feverishly eating the piece in one go.
🍀 They let out a soft hum at the question. He hoped it wouldn't be asked but, well he can't blame his friend to wondering. It would be cruel of them not to answer. Clover looked up to Starlo as he started to recount his memories.
“ I think there were other kids there with me. I remember jus' existin' fer a bit... Then there was a weird feelin' I got. Like- Like I needed to defend myself from somethin'. Or maybe it needed ta' be brought ta' justice...? ”
🍀Clover makes a vague waving gesture, more to themselves to remind them they where getting off track. Focus, Clover.
🍀 Their gaze moved from Starlo to the ground, hardening as they fought to remember. They still remember the guilt they felt for attacking someone innocent.
“ Eventually th' yellin' stopped an' it was quiet again. I could hear them other kids better too. It wuz nice havin' others ta' talk ta'... I-I think time passed cause after a bit I could feel mah soul be ... absorbed? Used? Like before. I suppose it wasn' nearly as bad as the first time but I don' remember anythin' that happened. I just know somethin' broke an' then nothin'-ness. ”
“ Next thing I know I was cold. Which was knew given how I couldn' feel anythin' up until then. Started movin' mah hands around an' pushed mah coffin open. ”
🍀 A quiet giggle slips out.
“ I ran into a fella that was listenin' to'a radio in town. Some ad fer yer show came on an' I asked where you were. Told me you and the posse had moved to th' surface. Some shenanigans later an' here I am! ”
🍀 Clover looks up at Starlo with a soft grin. Like everything he just said wasn't very concerning. He'd argue he's dealt with worse.

Clover eagerly followed Starlo, hopping up on the bench and sitting. It warmed their heart hearing about Starlo and the success he found on the Surface. During his talk, they let their bandana slip down their face to rest comfortably around their neck. Clover couldn't suppress the flinch at the fabric rubbing against their wounds. God, they really needed something to heal. But that could wait!
They paused however at the Sheriff's stomach growling. Oh right! They also didn't get to eat ... but they wouldn't want to inconvenience him.
He's interrupted by a soft growling. Where might it be coming from you ask? Clover's stomach of course!

Clover stood there for a few moments, dumbstruck at seeing their old friend and his new appearance. Just how much time passed since their untimely departure...? They couldn't dwell on the thought though, as Starlo had started moving away and towards more stalls.
They gave chase, but admittedly stayed back. Why? A burning pit of anxiety formed in their stomach. Would Starlo remember him? Had Starlo moved on? What if he-
He shook his head slightly, ridding all thoughts that plagued him. Securing their hat atop their wild hair, he quickened his pace, desperate to reach the former Sherriff. Clover silently cursed their short legs. Why didn't their body grow all these years? That wasn't fair.
It wasn't until they reached some stalls that looked to be serving desserts, did he notice that they too were being followed. ‘ I didn't lose 'em after all. ’ His mind bitterly supplied. Despite having encountered 3 monsters earlier, it seemed only the feline one was able to trace them.
The human silently cursed to himself. These distractions would be the death of him. And fate took that literally as he was pulled behind some boxes and shoved to the ground. They were rudely met with a clawed paw tracing his jaw.
“ I'll hand it to you, kid. Pretty clever to hide in the crowd, ” they purred. “ but it was pretty rude of you to leave like that ... Now's your last chance to hand over all the goods before things get messy, y'know what I mean? ”
The monster suddenly grabbed his throat, claws digging into flesh. Clover felt his soul thump with damage. His hands scratched at the monsters' as a tiny whine slipped out. They would regret it, but sometimes justice wasn't pretty. They used all their strength to rip the caws off them and kick the monster into the nearby boxes, causing them to tumble over.
Glancing at their hp, they tsked softly.

Clover was quick to brush away any tears they shed. He needed to be strong, even if it felt like he hadn't seen Starlo in forever. They couldn't help but giggle softly. Seeing Starlo look so relieved and well wasn't something they thought they needed.
As Clover looked around, they noticed the attention their impromptu reunion had brought. A sudden wave of embarrassment washed over them. He quickly moved his bandana over his face, feeling his cheeks heat with embarrassment. All these eyes on them ... it reminded them of-
It was obvious they where just embarrassed, being so vulnerable in public, but they tried their best to make it seem as nonchalant as possible. Looking at their boots, he could suddenly feel the dull ache in his hands and knees.

Clover paused, quickly remembering exactly what they had been trying to do prior to getting jumped. He turned just in time to see North Star himself making a mad dash after the same blue horned monster from earlier, as well as Krowley carrying that cat monster from earlier. They also seemed to be chasing after North Star. Convenient. Boots scraping concrete. Hand holding down hat. They chased after them.
The tiny human was getting a bit tired of chasing after goals... But they where determined to catch up. Monsters and humans alike yelled and complained as Clover pushed past.
As North Star dodged around a human carrying some boxes, the human yelped in surprise. The boxes tumbled out of her arms and into Clover's path. He bit down a swear as he vaulted over a box and landed roughly on his feet. That was going to sting later.
Krowley above them gained speed, and eventually caught up to their boss. They glanced down at the sheriff and grinned.
“ Say, Purdy, how's about you learn how to sky dive? ” They snickered. The feline let out an agitated cry, “ Krowley if you drop me I swear to the Ang-! ” Their complaint was stopped short as their carrier dropped them, right into North Star.
Purdy hissed loudly, claws unsheathed as they swatted at North Star. They sent a dark glare to their companion, who snickered as they continued flying after their boss.
Clover quickly caught up, a tiny gasp slipping out when they saw the feline monster be dropped onto North Star! They bit their lip and pushed their bandana over their mouth as they approached.
They bit back a chuckle as Purdy jumped to their feet, claws poised at Clover. “ You got some nerve coming after us after you sad excuse of a fight. ” Purdy hissed.

Time seemed to slow as the monster lunged at Clover. Their soul pulsed in their chest, beating a fast pace as their world darkened. He could tell their yellow heart was faintly materializing in front of them. This would be a tough fight...
If it wasn't for North Star to absolutely send Purdy careening into a nearby food stall. Their neck nearly cracked at watching the speed of which it happened.
Hearing Starlo utter those words ... A warm feeling started to crackle in his chest. It soon lessened when Starlo fell to his knees, looking up at them with such pain ridden eyes. The weight of their death make their stomach twist.
A tired grin split their face as they threw themselves at Starlo, arms wrapping around his neck in a tight embrace. They buried their face in his scarf, hoping the fabric would hide their tears.
