i'm going to be apart of anime nyc's artist alley this august if anyone is interested! i'm excited to table again, haven't done it since before the pandemic which feels so long ago!!
i know it's likely a small pool of people i'm speaking to in respect to attending but feel free to let me know if there's anything you want to see there (i'll def be representing most the stuff ive done frequent fanart of here). i'd say i'll sell leftovers online after but i say that but never get around to it so we'll see pfft

the lore and culture of watership down is so awesome and being rabbits it's kind of fun to apply it to the taguel. like thinking about if say they had the stories of el-ahrairah and such.
i may be grasping at straws here but you can almost draw a parallel here with inlé and the moon!

i love this painting and often revisit it to reference the Energy and such for my own interpretations but the more i think about it i wonder if doi himself was influenced by leyendecker’s painting of cú chulainn and his charioteer láeg for fionn mac cumhaill in smt

easily the cú portrayal of all time!!!!
the red cape and its gold trimming with ‘x’ patterns (even the cape’s shape as it flies looks shockingly similar now that i look at them together haha), the white toga-looking sheet thing, and even just the body armor style.. all seem oddly specific details to me!

in all i suppose it’s just kind of funny and ironic to me that as far as how they look in smt, cuchulainn feels all noble and fionn looks more wild, when in their respective stories fionn is the just and noble leader while cuchulainn is the undomesticated youth haha

fionn is straight up just what everyone calls him and the fianna is what his warrior band is named but it’s still really funny to me that fionn and the fianna, or ‘fionn agus na fianna’ if u want to be thorough literally translates to ‘blondie and the deers'

not to dissect jun on his dam birthday but after having played mainline shin megami tensei and then going back and thinking about how jun is associated with angels, i keep thinking about how it feels cruel in a way... 
in smtiv when you go through purgatorium, which is the angels’ domain, all the mini bosses in that dungeon parrot the same opening dialogue, and whichever characters youre traveling with at the time comment on this and how they feel more like dolls or robots. this is indicative of basically the highest level of order, which the angels symbolize of course as the harbingers of the law alignment, with predictable and orderly dialogue and actions.
jun through joker is associated with angels through granting people their ideals, not to mention after coming back to himself he feels obligated to serve as a paragon of hope as penance for his past actions (those feelings of obligation are probably even why chronos takes on an angel-like form too tbh :’]’’ ). there’s even nyarlathotep’s line just before the 2nd phase of the caracol boss battle, ‘since you were praised as an angel, i grant you heavenly strength…’ followed by angel joker being formed. being that jun as joker is effectively his puppet, his marionette doll to carry out deeds, and then considering how the high angels in smtiv are effectively dolls carrying out orders, perhaps nyarlathotep was being cruelly ironic with likening him to an angel in that way. just a doll, a puppet. dispensable
kind of interesting to look at thru the lens of an smt game, as angels are obviously the agents of order, while joker and nyarl are certainly more chaotic entities...!

if thoughts that i was too tired last nite to type out.. i decided to just go right into it and finish off the smt snes titles while off the heels of 1&2. like i rambled in tags it’s fine, i didnt find it on its own particularly interesting or investing, it’s p much just straightforward dungeon crawling. it’s like the p1 snow queen route but less plot and no characters nwafeoijfg but also like i said it is more interesting for being the crossroads title between smt and the progenitor of persone just playing it and seeing obviously what was taken further in later titles etc etc
most annoying things to me were how u had to buy ammo by the bullet (i mean money becomes a nonissue after that forced grind sesh in the world of sloth but taking up inventory space sometimes. i ended up not using the guns as much but maybe that was the idea since those are ur main sources of Cheesing the gameplay in 1&2 snjfkg) and how demons in the lower back row of ur UI cant reach enemies w their standard attacks (i can see how that was the basis for the p1 battle system positioning which i found a lil annoying at times in that game too LOL) i understand they were trying to make combat more interesting though, considering those are the two elements you’d crutch on for spamming auto-battle
but god i think the worst part of the game was that stupid world of sloth dungeon... u cannot advance unless a certain amount of moon phase cycles pass so u just gotta wander around back and forth which was tedious as fuuuuck (goes without saying for most of this game i had on other things to watch while dungeon crawling pfft) it is probably bc the nature of the game is very formulaic with knowing oh i have to do dungeon 1 then dungeon 2 etc etc and being p bare bones in the story/char department that doesn’t make it very interesting to me but i could see ppl who are just rlly into dungeon crawling enjoying it
one thing particular to me i guess is the fact almost all of the game’s music is recycled from 1&2 (with very light add-ons and remixing) and while im not complaining abt having to listen to those because they have Great osts.... idk music being used outside of its original context can often bother me more than i think it should, something about it kind of undermining its original effect... (this is super nitpicky, i think this comes out of my film background where music is usually executed with such purpose lol) like smt1&2 have such distinct tones, 1 is a really lonely and empty feeling game, 2 really feels like a special flavor of widespread post-apocalypse, so to me it feels dissonant to hear some of the tracks that add to that out of their original context when smt if is a muuuuch smaller self-contained game than its predecessors (there were certain bits of smt4a that had the same effect against smtiv to me tbh) this def bothered me especially with the smt2 tracks LOL again super nitpicky. but honestly hearing the music from the prev games just made me kind of wish i was playing those instead
anyway. certainly a strangely interesting game in theory. if only for its prototype-like nature (at least for me)

honestly i can pinpoint the exact moment where i got the inspiration to do that thing where i juxtapose warm and cool colors (especially with shading) as being PRECISELY in the game history class i took in college where one week the game ‘another world’ was on the syllabus... i picked it up bc i thought the art direction seemed neat and everyone else was hogging the mainstream games as usual (lol)
and then this One shot popped up in a cutscene near the start

it’s so simple but i was So enraptured by the purplish shading on the flesh tone and it has singlehandedly influenced my work so heavily...
being an old game it’s TOUGH AS HELLLLL but very charming nonetheless... i remember the lecturer at the end of the semester saying if you get one thing out of this class i hope it’s that you found a game you enjoyed that you probably would not have come across otherwise. i thought of this game when he said that
