i responded other because my opinion depends on what is being intended with hal in this au, what they want to do with him. if they want to mimic his canon relationship with dirk? then no, making them twins doesn't work. but if you want to try something new, go on ahead and make them twins, or make them headmates, or whatever

been pondering this one for a while and i'm not sure where i stand on it myself so i want to know what people think about this, so (assuming there's no good way to represent hal as an artificial intelligence /non-human entity/extension of dirk):

rereading homestuck is like a recreational activity to me now. i originally went in thinking i would do a very diligent reread but a week later im only 800 pages in but it really fun to just tune in whenever i feel like it and do fun things like mix music on daves . machine i forgot the name of. or finding joy in playing jades flute as you realize a makes her ascend and z makes her sleep and j makes her jump because you never got to play these flashes before. and homestucks just. fun . and im really appreciating that. because i forgot for a while it was so joyous

i also think a lot of the fandom really needs to examine their feelings on transfems in general. ive spoken about this on my main blog before but in popular fandom spaces theres a sort of aversion to transfemininity. its been getting better over the years, but theres still this sort of push away from transfem identities and a pull towards transmasc identities. a lot of times you have to justify why you could conceive a character as transfem, yet no such justification is asked for the idea of a character being transmasc. and while there's a hug backlash against june being a trans woman, theres also lots of acceptance of the idea of her being a trans man instead. and while i do agree some part of it is people not liking a big change like this, i think there is a transmisogynistic factor too. especially in the intensity and fervor in which people will disregard the idea of june. but thats just my 2 cents

me when i have a normal response to the non-binary author of a popular queer webcomic confirming to a fan that the main character will eventually realise she is a trans woman

like what’s most crazy about this is the comparisons to stuff like h*rry p*tter or “only confirming something on twitter” as if Homestuck has ever been a multibillion dollar franchise rather than just what One Person Says On The Internet.

stuff like homestuck is lost on people who expect all queer representation to be like steven universe or a disney character saying “mom… dad… im gay” rather than the infinitely complex real queer experiences homestuck actually encapsulates. the worst take i saw about this is “this is so backwards, why not just make john transmasc the whole time instead???” as if stories about trans women who come out later just fully don’t deserve to exist. as if “transition” shouldn’t ever be part of the story, only post-transition. fucking wild. genuinely cannot imagine being a member of the trans community and thinking this way.

takes a deep breath. she is so goofy and whimsical shes the funniest girl in the room even when she doesn't mean it shes a silly little prankster and she owns it she always makes me giggle when i reread homestuck shes the reason why i cant fathom anyone skipping the first few acts because youre missing out on so much of junes whimsy and interaction with her friends and really a whole massive fucking chunk of her story and character arc. exhales and starts coughing cuz i held my breath too long

i was gonna be like "i wonder why dancestor is only used for beforan trolls" but actually i think i have an idea. so im gonna ramble about it for anyone else asking that

its probably because 1. the terms descendant and ancestor are usually associated with trolls irt homestuck, so that immediately cancels out the idea that descendant/ancestor can refer to human relationships. 2. it was coined by porrim, a beforan troll, so thats a point for association with them. 3. the alternian trolls are typically considered the default, the originals. they are the primary trolls in which other trolls are related to you. you typically think of karkat just as karkat, not kankris dancestor. but the beforan trolls get a lot less spotlight, so you typically think of them in terms of relation, i.e kankri is karkats dancestor

dancestor applies to all 24 trolls and the 8 humans too it doesn't specifically refer to the beforus trolls

sometimes i get scared that I'm wildly misunderstanding or misinterpreting homestuck and then i remember the time someone wrote a comment saying "didn't nepeta kill babies?"
