This is also what makes arcane characters so interesting, they're really complex and all have this kind of duality. There is no good or bad, everything is a mix of both. Every time I see people fighting over whether or not a character is good or bad in the show I feel like they're completely missing the point. I've seen a lot of people saying that portraying Silco and jinx like father and daughter in a cute and silly way in fanworks (it being Fanart or fanfictions) is romanticising their relationship since Silco was a bad father and their relationship was unhealthy. But it's not. It's quite literally part of their dynamic.
Silco raised her primarily because she seemed useful and because he saw himself in her in the way she felt betrayed by Vi, the same way he felt betrayed by Vander. He made her into a weapon in a way, clearly lacked boundaries and the only education he gave her was related to making her efficient and useful for his plans. Jinx has hallucinations of him telling her to do things right or yell, so this clearly had an impact on her. Still he saw her as his daughter, he loved her and encouraged her passions, was patient and cared for her. These two aspects of their relationship coexist and you simply cannot separate them. For him, he did his best and his best is definitely flawed by his lack of experience and the context. It's unhealthy but it's here and you can't erase any part of it. Portraying them as happy and silly isn't romanticising it, they could have been that way and yet still unhealthy, that's the point.
Now, one of the main ways for a fandom to cope is quite literally to portray characters in silly and happy situations. Should they only draw them suffering ? Some characters died, should we only draw them dead ? I mean come on. I just saw a reel on Instagram and I was stunned by the amount of people in the comments calling artists and writers weirdos for showing good sides for pretty much any character and relationship they deemed "toxic" and "unhealthy" if that's what's holding you back from drawing or writing what you want then only show ekko, that's one healthy guy.
if we define “good dad” by genuinely wanting what’s best for your kid, loving and caring for them unconditionally, being patient with them, making them feel valued, giving them the space to express themselves, encouraging their talents, and genuinely trying your best and doing what you think is best for them, then Silco was a good dad.
But if we define “good dad” by actually being able to properly parent and discipline your child, ensuring they aren’t a danger to themselves and others, teaching them healthy life lessons so that they can grow, not projecting your own unresolved trauma onto your child in a codependent way, and being a good role model, then Silco was NOT a good dad.
