Kevin Smith Teases Releasing 'Jersey Girl: The Snyder Cut' Kevin Smith is up for releasing an extended cut of his maligned 2004 film Jersey Girl, as long as they call it Jersey Girl: The Snyder Cut. As a way of parodying HBO Max's upcoming project Zack Snyder's Justice League, Kevin Smith said that he wants to release a "Snyder Cut" of his 2004 film Jersey Girl. During an episode of his podcast Fatman Beyond, Smith first mentioned that there were no future plans to release a director's cut for any of his films. A year before "Mallrats" opened in theaters, Jason Mewes made his acting debut portraying Jay in "Clerks." He returned to the role in "Chasing Amy," "Dogma," "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back," "Clerks II" and "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot." He's also appeared in two other films written and directed by pal and frequent collaborator Kevin Smith: "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" and "Yoga Hosers." But it hasn't always been smooth sailing for the longtime screen partners. The duo were briefly estranged amid Jason's battle with drug addiction, which kicked off in the late '90s. He attempted to get clean several times, but it wasn't until 2010 that sobriety stuck. He reportedly suffered a big relapse in 2009 — the same year he married Jordan Monsanto. Their 10-year-old podcast “Jay and Silent Bob Get Old” began when Smith was 40. Now he’s 50. They’re in Chicago this week for two reasons. One involves a fictional restaurant pulled into reality. From Friday through Nov. 6, a pop-up edition of Mooby’s, the fast-food joint Smith invented for his movie, offers takeaway burgers, onion rings and “vegan cow tippers” at St. Lou’s Assembly in the West Loop. The Tribune wrote about it recently. The other reason Smith and Mewes are coming to town: They’re doing the live podcast Sunday night at the McHenry Outdoor Theater. Here are some excerpts from a recent conversation with Smith, which reveal, among other things, why he considers Chicago “heaven” and what’s the deal with his unlikely decades-long association with a certain Chicago suburb. In the original 1995 comedy, Affleck played sleazy store manager Shannon Hamilton, who ended up being sent to prison for statutory rape after he had sex with 15-year-old Tricia Jones (Renee Humphrey). Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Smith said: "The thing that I'm most tickled about is how Shannon Hamilton and his crime from back in the day figures into the current climate. "Shannon comes back as Sen. Shannon Hamilton, and so his redemption arc begins before our movie even begins. His political redemption arc is pretty funny." The original Mallrats follows college student TS Quint (Jeremy London) and his best friend Brodie Bruce (Jason Lee), who take a trip to the mall after their girlfriends break up with them. TS's ex, Brandi (Claire Forlani), is taking part in a dating gameshow at the mall, which was the cause of their breakup, while Brodie's ex, Rene (Shannen Doherty), has just started dating Shannon. Skipping forward in time, the end credits see TS and Brandi getting married, Brodie becoming the host of The Tonight Show, and Shannon going to prison. Watch the First Episode of Quibi’s Slugfest Series Narrated by Kevin Smith Kevin Smith is bringing his comic book expertise to Quibi. During today’s virtual New York Comic Con festivities, Smith hosted a panel for Slugfest, an upcoming docuseries that examines the decades-old rivalry between Marvel and DC. Smith also revealed that he’s narrating the new series, and even premiered its very first episode. Slugfest is based on author Ken Tucker’s 2017 book of the same name and counts Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo as two of its executive producers. The Russos were also joined on the panel by directors Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce, actor Brandon Routh, and comic legends Jenette Kahn and Jim Starlin. In addition to talking about their work on the series, the filmmakers also revealed new key art. The first episode picks up where it all began, with Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s creation of Superman in 1938. A few years later, after Look Magazine recruited Siegel and Shuster to write a story where the Man of Steel single-handedly wins World War II, Timely Comics (a precursor to Marvel) set out to create their own patriotic superhero. The episode features interviews with Tucker, Batman movie producer Michael Uslan, comic book historian Alex Grand, and more. It even goes the extra mile by reenacting the moment when Joe Simon and Jack Kirby got their inspiration for Captain America, with Routh starring as Simon. Kirby and Simon’s grandchildren show up to provide some extra historical context as well. Last week, word came down that Supergirl would end its fight for truth and justice with the upcoming sixth season- with reports that the combination of production delays and the series' stead dip in ratings were the contributing factors in the producers, the studio, the network, and Benoist making the decision to go out on a high note with an extended final season. Filming on the sixth season is expected to start on Monday, September 28 in Vancouver, and scheduled to accommodate Benoist's time away. The writing team is working on the storylines that will comprise the series' final 20 episodes. Kevin Smith has brought his Mooby’s pop-up restaurant to Red Bank, taking over Gianni’s Pizzeria for for a few days to allow the restaurant from "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back," "Dogma," "Clerks 2" and "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot" to exist for a week in Red Bank.
