Love 119 [Part One]
part of my paramedic!jungwon series. [part two] [part three]
pairing: paramedic!jungwon x doctor!reader genre: workplace tension, constant bickering, fluff (trust me) word count: 2.7k summary: jungwon and you made it a habit to constantly be at each other's throats, especially in the emergency room. while he barked orders, you fired back just as fiercely. but once the doors closed, the tension shifted into a warm intimacy that only you two knew. author's note: self-indulgent fic because i've seen no one writing this trope
The late afternoon sun was just beginning to dip behind the skyline when the call came in—an emergency at a construction site on the outskirts of the city.
Jungwon barely had time to glance at his watch before he was in motion, his team falling in line behind him as the sirens wailed and the ambulance tore through the city streets.
Arriving at the site, chaos greeted them. Workers were clustered around a man lying motionless on the ground, his hard hat cracked and discarded nearby, dust and debris littering the air. Jungwon’s jaw tightened, taking in the scene in a flash. This wasn’t good.
“Let’s move,” he barked, his tone sharp but calm, his team already spreading out as they grabbed the necessary equipment from the ambulance.
He strode forward with an authoritative air, his well-built frame and broad shoulders drawing more than a few eyes from the construction workers, some of whom were openly staring at him, their faces filled with a mix of concern and awe.
“Step back, please,” Jungwon said firmly but politely, the workers quickly making way as he knelt down beside the injured man.
His dark hair, just a bit tousled from the rush, caught the light, and the sharp angles of his jawline seemed even more pronounced against the backdrop of the gritty site. His team watched him with admiration; Jungwon always exuded this calm, confident charm that somehow made even the most panicked scenes feel manageable.
Jungwon quickly assessed the man’s condition. The patient was unconscious, his breathing shallow. One of his teammates handed over the stethoscope, and Jungwon listened intently to the faint sounds of the man’s breathing. His brow furrowed.
“Possible head trauma. We’ve got low oxygen saturation,” he muttered under his breath, signaling for the oxygen mask as his hands moved swiftly yet delicately over the man’s body, checking for fractures and injuries.
His every move was precise, commanding attention—not just because of his skill but the way he carried himself. Even in the face of an emergency, he looked collected, like he was born to handle the pressure.
"Jungwon," his teammate called from the side, holding the patient's chart. "No significant external bleeding. We’ve got a weak pulse though, around 130, BP's borderline. We need to get him out of here fast."
Jungwon’s eyes narrowed as he nodded, quickly making a decision. “Let’s secure his airway first and immobilize his spine. We can’t risk any movement.” He made the call as he smoothly slid the oxygen mask onto the patient’s face, adjusting it with a gentleness that contrasted the urgency of the situation. His fingers brushed over the man’s wrist, checking his pulse again. A slight frown creased his forehead.
With practiced ease, his team set up a backboard to stabilize the patient, while Jungwon prepared to radio the hospital. His deep voice echoed through the dust-laden air, crisp and calm. “We’re looking at a possible internal bleed or brain injury—trauma to the head, decreased GCS. Get Y/N on standby. She’ll want to know.”
He tapped his earpiece, dialing straight into the hospital, his tone switching effortlessly into that of a strict professional.
“Y/N,” he started, his voice filled with authority as he spoke into the receiver, “we’ve got a situation here. Male, late twenties, unconscious after a fall from height—GCS is 4. We’ve administered oxygen and immobilized his spine, but he’s unresponsive. Internal injuries are likely.”
There was a brief pause on the other end, before your voice came through, crisp and all business. “Vitals?”
Jungwon rattled off the numbers, his tone growing sharper as he outlined the gravity of the situation. “BP’s dropping fast, pulse is weak, pupils uneven—one’s blown. It’s not looking good.”
“Get him here as fast as you can,” you replied, your voice steady. “We’ll be ready when you arrive. I need him in trauma two for imaging, and you better give me a detailed report when you get here.”
Jungwon rolled his eyes subtly, though no one else could hear his exasperation. “Of course, Doctor. Just make sure the room’s prepped.” His sarcasm was impossible to miss, but before you could retort, he was already motioning for his team to get the stretcher ready.
“Let’s get moving,” he said, standing up in one fluid motion, his wide shoulders casting a shadow over the patient as he signaled for the transfer. His team lifted the man onto the gurney, Jungwon guiding them every step of the way. Despite the intensity of the moment, there was something about the way he commanded the situation—his deep voice, his piercing gaze, the way he moved like a force of nature—that made even a frantic scene seem a little calmer.
Jungwon was the kind of guy people listened to, the kind of guy people looked up to. Even with the weight of the situation hanging over him, he held his head high, taking charge like it was second nature. His team moved quickly, securing the patient in the ambulance as Jungwon gave one last glance to the scene before climbing in.
“Let’s go,” he said firmly, and with the wail of sirens, they sped off toward the hospital.
Jungwon stormed through the emergency room doors with a sense of purpose, his jaw clenched as he guided the gurney toward the trauma bay. “28-year-old male, head trauma, GCS of 4, possible internal bleeding. Move it!” His voice boomed with authority, eyes scanning the room as the ER team sprang into action.
The chaos of the emergency room was nothing new, but today it seemed more charged than usual. The tension was thick as the nurses hurried to get the trauma room prepped, doctors barking orders as they readied themselves. And at the center of it all was you—focused, sharp-eyed, already gloved up and waiting.
The moment Jungwon and his team wheeled the patient in, your eyes met his, a silent exchange of understanding mixed with the tension that always crackled between them in moments like this. Not that anyone would’ve noticed—your constant bickering was practically a feature of every shift.
You stepped forward, your voice cutting through the noise of the room. “Trauma two is open. Let’s get him in fast!”
The team followed your lead, transferring the patient from the gurney to the hospital bed with swift efficiency. Jungwon stayed close, hands still gripping the rails of the stretcher as if he was unwilling to relinquish control.
“You took too long with the vitals report,” you said, throwing him a sharp glance. “We could’ve been in there five minutes ago.”
Jungwon’s eyes narrowed. “We did take the vitals. Maybe if you paid attention, you’d know that.”
“Excuse me?” you shot back, your gaze never leaving the patient as you worked to stabilize him. “I don’t need a paramedic trying to tell me how to do my job. We had a plan, and your delay didn’t help.”
Jungwon glared, his voice low and clipped. “Maybe if your plan didn’t waste time on unnecessary scans, we wouldn’t have needed a second round of intubation last time.”
Your hands froze for a split second before you caught yourself. You threw him a withering look. “This again? You think you can waltz in here and play doctor, Jungwon?”
“I’m not playing doctor. I’m trying to make sure you don’t screw it up.” His tone was biting, but professional, and the tension in the room rose instantly.
One of the nurses stepped back, shaking her head. “Here they go again.”
You didn’t back down, leaning closer as you adjusted the IV line. “How about you leave the doctoring to me, and I’ll leave the paramedic work to you? We’ll see how long that lasts.”
Jungwon took a breath, his expression unreadable for a moment, his frustration barely contained. “Fine. Just don’t mess it up.”
“Same to you,” you retorted, not missing a beat.
Before Jungwon could respond, one of the nurses interrupted. “Dr. Y/N, patient’s BP is dropping.”
Instantly, you refocused, the banter dropped as quickly as it had escalated. “Let’s get the trauma panel done. We need to stabilize him before moving for imaging. Prep the fluids.”
Jungwon watched you work, his arms still crossed, but he didn’t say another word. Despite the constant arguing, there was no denying that you are incredible at your job. Even in the most high-pressure situations, you were in complete control.
You worked together in tense silence, the only sounds in the room now the soft beeps of the monitors and the quiet shuffling of the medical team around them. Jungwon’s team lingered just outside, waiting for their next call, though they couldn’t help but glance back inside the room occasionally, accustomed to the combative exchanges between Jungwon and you.
As the patient’s vitals finally stabilized, you took a step back, letting out a quiet breath. “We’re clear to take him to imaging now. Good work, everyone,” you called to the team, your voice steady once more.
Jungwon uncrossed his arms, walking past you toward the door. “You’re welcome,” he muttered under his breath, just loud enough for you to hear.
You narrowed your eyes at his back but said nothing. You didn’t need to. Your argument had run its course for now.
Thirty minutes later, with the patient stable and prepped for surgery, you stepped out of the trauma room, pulling off your gloves. Jungwon was waiting in the hallway, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, that same tight-lipped look on his face.
“Everything go okay, or did I miss something else?” he asked, his voice loaded with sarcasm.
You glared at him. “Yeah, we managed just fine without your commentary, thanks.”
“Good,” Jungwon muttered, pushing himself off the wall and adjusting his jacket. “Maybe next time you won’t waste so much time arguing.”
“Maybe next time you’ll do your job and get out of my way,” you shot back, your voice sharp.
“You love being in control, don’t you?” Jungwon’s eyes glinted, his voice dropping low as he stepped closer. “Can’t handle someone else calling the shots, huh?”
You crossed your arms, your gaze unyielding. “I don’t need to handle anything, least of all you.”
“Trust me, I’m not asking for much,” he replied with a smirk, his voice oozing with challenge.
You scoffed, brushing past him. “Try asking for less.”
Jungwon shook his head with an exasperated sigh as he watched you walk away, but his lips twitched ever so slightly. The others on their teams didn’t even blink. This was just how the both of you were. They were used to it by now—the biting remarks, the challenges, the constant back-and-forth. Every time Jungwon’s ambulance showed up, it was only a matter of time before you and him were at each other’s throats again.
Hours later, the hospital had quieted down. The rush of the afternoon was over, and most of the staff had gone home. You and Jungwon had managed to avoid each other for the rest of your shifts, though your earlier argument still hung in the air like static.
You finally peeled off your gloves after your last appointment and scrubbed your hands clean, your mind replaying the events of the day. You were tired, drained even, but there was something about that last spat with Jungwon that wouldn’t stop gnawing at you. Maybe it was the way he always had a smug retort ready or how he never backed down from your challenges.
Shaking your head, you let out a sigh. “Annoying paramedic,” you muttered under your breath, grabbing your coat and heading out of the ER.
Your apartment wasn’t far from the hospital, a quiet space tucked away from the noise of the city. By the time you have arrived, your exhaustion had fully settled in, your body craving rest.
You pushed open the door and was greeted by the sound of faint rustling from the kitchen.
“Rough day?” a familiar voice asked, soft and warm.
You smiled, the tension from earlier melting away. There, standing in the kitchen in the same paramedic uniform that had driven you crazy just hours ago, was Jungwon. His hair was a little disheveled now, his expression soft and boyish, the strict leader of the paramedic team completely gone.
“You have no idea,” you murmured, walking over to him, your eyes catching on his broad shoulders, still defined under the crisp lines of his uniform. Jungwon turned around, and you couldn’t help but feel your heart skip a beat when you see his easy smile, so different from the sharp tone he used at work.
Without another word, Jungwon wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into his chest. The scent of antiseptic still clung to his uniform, mixed with the faintest hint of his cologne. You closed your eyes and let yourself melt against him, the weight of the day slipping away. You buried your face into his shoulder, feeling the strong muscles beneath the fabric, and sighed softly.
“You’re lucky I put up with you,” he teased, reaching for your hand and pulling your close. “Even after you yelled at me for no reason.”
“I didn’t yell for no reason,” you protested, but your voice had lost all its sharpness, softened by the warmth of being home. You leaned against his chest, letting out a deep breath. “Okay, maybe I did. But only because you deserved it.”
Jungwon chuckled, his arms wrapping around you more tightly. “Sure, I deserved it. You really hate me that much, huh?”
You rolled your eyes, but there was no heat behind it as you melted into his embrace. “The worst,” you muttered, though your fingers played with the collar of his uniform.
Jungwon smirked, resting his chin on top of your head. “Good thing we’ve got the whole night to make up for it, then.”
“You’re still in your uniform,” you mumbled, trying to sound nonchalant. But inside, your mind was in chaos. His broad shoulders. The way he held you. The authority he exuded at work seemed to linger here, too, but only just enough to make your heart race.
Jungwon chuckled, his hand moving up to cup the back of your head. “I thought you liked me in uniform.”
You groaned, your cheeks flushing. “Stop it. I’m tired.”
“Liar,” he teased, pulling back just enough to look into your eyes. His own softened as he took in your face, the familiar tenderness filling his gaze. “You love it.”
And he wasn’t wrong. As strict and commanding as you could be at work, here with him, you couldn’t help but feel weak in his arms. You were whipped for him in every sense of the word, even if you would never admit it out loud.
Jungwon kissed the top of your head, his earlier bravado fading into a gentle affection. “Come on. Let’s get you out of these scrubs and cuddle.”
You let out a soft laugh, the kind that only he ever got to hear. “You’re the one who’s going to change first. That uniform’s distracting.”
“I knew it,” he grinned, but without missing a beat, he started peeling off his jacket, revealing the tight black undershirt beneath that highlighted his lean muscles. You had to look away before you lost yourself completely.
As you settled onto the couch, your limbs tangled together in the quiet of their apartment, the world outside felt a million miles away. In here, there were no patients to save, no colleagues to impress, no reputations to uphold. It was just the both of you.
Jungwon nuzzled into the crook of your neck, his earlier strictness replaced by a cuteness that only you got to see. “You’re such a pain at work, you know that?”
You smiled, running your fingers through his hair. “You’re not so easy yourself.”
And just like that, the bickering, the tension, all of it faded away. Because here, in your shared apartment, away from the chaos of the ER and the expectations of their coworkers, you were just you and Jungwon—no titles, no arguments. Just two people who loved each other, even if you never let anyone else know.

Heard this was the place to come if we wanted to know about pregnant Buck talking to the baby about the station tasks 🤔
@dadvans is a dirty enabler. He's also the one who came up with the idea of Buck calling the kid "probie" fyi
+
When Tommy walks into the 118, it doesn't feel quite like a homecoming, but when Bobby catches sight of him and smiles as though Tommy's presence isn't just welcome, but expected, something inside him relaxes as though it were twenty years ago and he's about to walk up the stairs to sit down for another incredible family dinner.
"You guys get called to the thing with the Aon?" Grinning, he shakes Bobby's proffered hand as a matter of course, and part of him can't help but glow under Bobby's approving gaze.
It feels a bit like he's cheating on Captain Salazar, who took Tommy under her wing the second he got to Harbor and has given him free rein to do whatever he damn well pleases when he's in the air, but she doesn't cultivate the familial aura that cleaves to Bobby like a shadow. He likes and respects the hell out of her, but he probably wouldn't steal a helicopter and fly into a hurricane for her.
Some people were meant to be parents; Bobby Nash is definitely one of them. Tommy's working on it.
Bobby gives a sporting but ineffective swipe at the soot smeared across his forehead with his wrist. "Normally falling space junk knocking over a skyscraper would take the cake, but since twenty million bees weren't released into the city, I'm calling it a ho-hum sort of day."
There's something severely wrong with them that the third-tallest building in LA breaking in half like a Kit Kat Bar doesn't rank above bees, but Tommy had to fly through that shit storm, so he can't disagree. The next person who says 'bee-nado' is getting thrown off the Santa Monica pier.
Speaking of. Tommy throws a quick glance at the three engines parked in their usual spots in the hopes of catching a glimpse of movement, and he's either losing his touch or never had it to begin with, because he's clocked immediately.
Bobby gives him a knowing look.
Caught, Tommy chuckles. "At the risk of sounding patronizing, how much did he overdo it?"
"Buck didn't mind being on winch and hose duty," Bobby says wryly. At Tommy's dubious look, he adds, "Okay, he did try to sneak into the thick of it once or twice, but he complained only a little when I threatened to hogtie him and chuck him in the back of the ambulance."
"Only a little? That's unlike him." Tommy can perfectly picture the mulish pout on Evan's ridiculous lips because someone forbade him from running into a building that was hanging at a 240° angle.
"Hen may have also hinted that she'd break out The Powerpoint again if he didn't stop whining," Bobby admits. The capital letters are audible.
Tommy gives a low whistle. "That was diabolical of her."
He unfortunately hadn't been there when Hen presented You're Living For Two: A Comprehensive List of Things Buck Will Avoid for the Next 8 Months or Hen Will Have Him Committed (With A Foreword Written By Maddie Han) to Evan and the rest of the 118, but Eddie had texted Tommy throughout the whole thing like he was live tweeting a football game. At slide 40, which had five charts demonstrating the rates at which acute physical stress increased the risks of miscarriage and low birth weight, Eddie sent him a picture of Evan's cowed expression. Slide 43 ("Deli Meat A No-No"), on the other hand, got him a video of Evan in a heated argument with Hen, Howie, and Bobby about the merits of that.
It ended when Bobby shouted, "It's not just you that you're risking, Buck! Every time you deliberately put yourself into harm's way, you're also risking my grandchild!" and Evan burst into tears and sobbed, "You can't say things like that when you're taking hot dogs away from me!"
When Evan came home that day, he announced that mentioning The PowerPoint—and anything to do with Microsoft in general—was verboten for the next thousand years. Tommy couldn't help but quip, "It looks like you're upset about your family wanting you to carry this pregnancy safely to term. Would you like help? Yes, no, or cancel?"
He was forced to sleep on the couch for three nights. He regrets nothing.
"Where is everyone?" The station is eerily quiet for a day spent trying to get ahead of a falling building.
"Burrito run. Buck volunteered to stay behind. He still getting carsick in traffic?"
"Let's just say we've been putting the emesis bags Howie gave us to very good use. Is he busy?" Tommy lifts the bag in his hand so Bobby can see the grinning face of the Colonel himself. "I come bearing gifts."
Bobby laughs the laugh of a man who knows firsthand that Evan's insatiable cravings for KFC's mashed potatoes are the only thing keeping the lights on at the location on W Pico Boulevard. He gestures past Tommy toward the engines. "Last I saw him, he was giving a class on proper hose maintenance."
"Appreciate it, Bobby," he says and starts heading in that direction.
"Tell him he'd better not be promoting bad coupling habits." Tommy turns around, wide-eyed, but Bobby's already got a hand up to forestall the laughter he must know is inevitable. Bobby's grimacing so hard it looks like he might severe his carotid. "I regretted it the second I said it. Do me a favor and phrase it a little better?"
"I make no promises." Snickering, Tommy turns back to the engines and swings the KFC bag cheerfully as he goes, making a mental note to mention this in the OG 118 group chat. That ought to give Howie enough ammo to last through Christmas.
As he rounds Engine 3, he hears the susurrus of voices, which he expected, but as he gets closer he realizes it's just one voice, which he didn't. He comes to a stop right where the engine's rear strip on the storage compartment ends and ducks behind it a little to try and figure out exactly what he's looking at.
Bobby had said Evan was teaching and Tommy figured that meant he was holding court with the station's two newest recruits, but he's kneeling on the floor and carefully re-rolling a hose while he talks to an audience of precisely zero.
"Now this is called a straight roll," Evan says, voice modulated to be slow and easily understood. It's textbook perfect pacing. Tommy has no clue who it's for. Maybe he's filming a video? "I'm folding the male coupling over and then rolling it to the female coupling, which are unnecessarily gendered terms, but I wasn't in the room when they came up with the names, so."
Tommy's so distracted by how the muscles in Evan's arms strain against the sleeves of his uniform as he methodically rolls the hose that he almost misses what Evan says next.
"Now Daddy wants to do a Dutch roll, because it takes about five seconds and it's hilarious, but Grandpa Bobby would slaughter Daddy if he ever found out. Apparently letting the couplings drag on the ground is the eighth deadly sin." Evan rests back on his shins and pants a little, then pats the planetary curve of his belly with a grin. "Hope you're taking notes, probie. There will be a test."
There are two things in Tommy's life that he will never be able to forget, even if he had a full-frontal lobotomy; even if he wanted to:
The first is the way Evan's shoulders curled inwards as if bracing for a blow while he haltingly apologized about goading Tommy into fucking him after the condom ripped, about how Tommy didn't have to worry because Evan was relieving him of all responsibility, and that he didn't have any expectations because Tommy never asked for this and he hoped someday Tommy would forgive him for keeping what they'd accidentally created together.
Tommy isn't a violent man, but sometimes he fantasizes about going back through Evan's life and beating the shit out of everyone who ever made him feel unwanted, or treated him like a consolation prize. Even in the early days of their relationship, when Tommy's respect for certain boundaries or simple acts of kindness would make Evan visibly recalibrate, Tommy had to stop himself from demanding a list of names. He has one now, and part of him would like nothing more than to start with Evan's parents and work his way down.
The second is the teary, disbelieving grin that broke across Evan's face like a sunrise when the sonographer pressed the ultrasound wand to his belly and the room filled with the jackrabbiting whup-whup-whup sound of their kid's heartbeat. Evan had looked over at him, laughed wetly at the struck-dumb expression Tommy knew he was sporting, and said, "Sounds like the Bell 206."
When he reached out for Tommy, the fluorescent lights had glinted off the engagement band Tommy'd bought like a complete lunatic four months after Evan kissed him in the lobby of First Presbyterian. He'd kept it hidden in his toolbox until three months later, when Evan put on a brave face and tried to let him off the hook.
But he didn't have far to go, because Tommy was already reaching back for him. The metal of the ring was warm where it pressed against his fingers. And if his heart was so full of love and wonder that he cried a little, no one commented on it. Well, Evan did when they got in Tommy's truck after their appointment and then went straight to KFC, but that was to be expected. He'd taken the ribbing like a champ.
Watching Evan—now in the second week of his third trimester, the hem of his shirt fighting for its life where it stretches around his belly—earnestly teaching the kid still cooking inside him about proper hose care, Tommy knows he'll never forget this one either. He's pretty sure his life is going to be one unforgettable moment after another from here on out.
Swallowing around the lump in his throat, he walks out from behind the engine and gets a hand under Evan's elbow to help him get to his feet. It takes every ounce of his willpower to stand back and let Evan carry the hose over to its compartment and attach it to the main connection site himself. He's learned to grit his teeth and give help only when it's asked for. He has no desire to start up that argument again.
"So?" Tommy happily takes Evan into his arms while Evan happily takes the KFC bag out of his hand. "Is our kid going to graduate from the Academy or wash out completely?"
Evan grins at him. Tommy knows at least 45% of the love in his eyes is reserved for the mashed potatoes. "I'm calling it now: they're gonna be fire chief by the time they're twenty. Youngest in the entire country. What do you think, probie? You up for the challenge?"
Tommy places a hand gently on Evan's belly and immediately feels movement against his palm. Their kid hasn't given Evan a moment's peace since week 15; at any given moment, they're flipping around in there like they're doing zero-gravity training for a space mission. The familiar fluttering feeling makes his heart cramp.
That's their kid in there. They made that.
"I think that's a yes," Tommy murmurs, pressing a kiss to Evan's temple, then hanging there for a moment, breathing him in. Breathing them in. "Love you."
"God, I love you so much, you don't even know," Evan says, cracking open a container with a pleased hum.
Tommy smiles dopily, then reality trickles in. "You're talking to the potatoes, aren't you?"
"Of course not," Evan lies through a mouthful of KFC's finest spuds.

Ten Years| J.Ww
Pairing: Wonwoo x Reader
Genre: angst, established relationship, My Demon references
Words count: 2k
Summary: In hospital Wonwoo is a doctor, and back to house he is your husband. However, your sudden conditions make him choose.
Wonwoo had just finished attending to one of the recent patients who arrived at the emergency room with a fractured left leg. The chaotic atmosphere was a constant in the emergency room, with patients flooding in throughout the day. It had only been four hours into his shift, and Wonwoo had already cared for more than twenty individuals, each presenting a unique set of medical challenges.
Amidst the persistent hustle, another emergency call suddenly disrupted the relative calm around Wonwoo. As he stood near the phone, his attention was torn from the medical charts to the urgent message. It wasn't unusual to receive information in advance, but the unusual silence from the nurse prompted him to lift his head in curiosity. The nurse, her eyes widened, stared at him, seemingly struggling to find words. Wonwoo, sensing something amiss, mouthed a quiet "why?" before the distant sound of sirens slowly crept closer to the emergency room.
Before he could take another step toward the entrance, Kim Mingyu, his best friend and fellow doctor, halted him breathlessly. Wonwoo stood in shock, witnessing Mingyu's horrified gaze fixed upon him.
"Wonwoo, don't," Mingyu pleaded urgently, diverting his attention to the ambulance that had just arrived. Wonwoo, unable to discern the situation, brushed him aside; the patient's well-being demanded his immediate focus. He approached the ambulance determinedly, with Mingyu desperately chasing after him, attempting to impede his progress.
As the ambulance doors swung open, nurses swiftly mobilized to transfer the patient to the bed. Mingyu gripped Wonwoo, his voice strained. "Don't go closer, Wonwoo."
Ignoring Mingyu's plea, Wonwoo pressed forward. The harsh reality unfolded before him as he witnessed your bloodied form being moved onto the cart. Frozen in place, he struggled to comprehend the gravity of the situation, his best efforts to maintain composure slipping away.
"Ji Y/n, on her thirties, three stab wounds," a nurse reported clinically. Wonwoo's gaze remained fixed on you, lying lifelessly on the bed, the weight of the moment sinking in. The air was thick with tension and fear as the medical team rushed to address the critical condition before them.
Wonwoo struggled to process the unfolding nightmare. His wife, now in the hospital with three stab wounds, left him grappling with the unknown origin of the attack.
Mingyu, though visibly shaken himself, offered a grim explanation – you had fallen victim to random acts of violence occurring in South Korea. In the midst of the chaotic emergency room, Mingyu assured Wonwoo that he would personally oversee your critical situation.
As Wonwoo, his hands trembling, tried to catch a glimpse of you amidst the medical flurry, Mingyu stepped up to provide much-needed support. "I'll make sure she receives the best care, Wonwoo. Stay strong."
With a nod, Wonwoo expressed a plea to the nurse team, his voice quivering, "She's pregnant; please be careful." His eyes remained fixed on you as they moved you towards the operating room, each step an agonizing moment for Wonwoo, who felt a profound sense of helplessness in the face of the unexpected tragedy.
In the tense confines of the hospital waiting room, the atmosphere was thick with worry as doctors assessed the severity of the stab wounds. Mingyu, amidst the chaos, approached Wonwoo with a grave expression.
"The stab wounds were serious, but we caught it in time. There's a chance of survival, but it will be a tough road ahead," Mingyu conveyed, his eyes reflecting the gravity of the situation. Wonwoo's heart sank, his concern for you intensifying.
Meanwhile, Wonwoo couldn't shake the deep worry for both you and the life growing within you. The impending uncertainty surrounding the baby's well-being added an extra layer of anxiety to an already distressing situation. Each passing moment felt like an eternity, and Wonwoo found himself grappling with the fear of the unknown, desperately hoping for positive news.
In the midst of the turmoil, your parents arrived at the hospital, their faces etched with concern. The president of Jis University Hospital and his spouse, usually figures of authority and composure, now revealed the vulnerability of worried parents. They approached Wonwoo, their shared concern uniting them in a moment of shared anxiety.
As the hospital corridors echoed with the hushed conversations of doctors and the beeping of machines, your fate and that of the precious life you carried hung in the balance, leaving Wonwoo and your parents anxiously awaiting any sign of hope from the operating room.
*
Despite the stark contrast in your chosen paths, fate wove an unexpected connection between you and Wonwoo. You, the daughter of Jis University Hospital's president, embarked on a journey in law, deviating from the medical legacy of your family. Wonwoo, on the other hand, had been one of your father's standout students, carving his niche in the medical field.
The intertwining of your lives unfolded when both of you decided to volunteer at a Cancer Foundation. The shared commitment to a cause greater than yourselves became the bridge that brought you together. Wonwoo's dedication and compassion in treating patients mirrored your own passion for justice and advocacy as a lawyer.
Three years ago, just two weeks after your first encounter, a horrifying incident unfolded. A client, disgruntled by a legal outcome, attacked you, resulting in a fractured shoulder. Fate intervened, leading you to the very hospital where Wonwoo worked. He became your attending doctor, tending not only to your physical wounds but unknowingly laying the foundation for a deeper connection.
In those challenging days of recovery, Wonwoo's empathy and care became a source of solace. The hospital visits evolved into shared laughter, and a bond blossomed between patient and doctor. It was a turning point, marking the beginning of a relationship neither of you could have anticipated.
Fast forward to the hospital's 15th-anniversary celebration, where the spark between you and Wonwoo reignited. Amidst the festive atmosphere, you found yourselves engaged in conversation, exchanging subtle flirtations that hinted at the unspoken connection between you two. However, the celebration took an unexpected turn when Wonwoo was urgently summoned for an emergency surgery.
As he excused himself, he locked eyes with you, a promise lingering in the air. "I'll meet you again after the surgery," he assured, his words carrying a commitment that surpassed the casual banter of the evening.
At midnight, a series of urgent knocks jolted you awake, only to discover a weary Wonwoo at your doorstep. "I asked Mingyu about your place," he mumbled, weariness evident in his eyes. The mention of your cousin, Kim Mingyu, left an air of mystery lingering in the room.
In a vulnerable moment, Wonwoo found himself torn when asked to sign a paper for your surgery. He wished to choose both you and the unborn child, but the harsh reality of the world intervened. The doctor overseeing your surgery delivered a grim verdict – a choice had to be made, and it was impossible for all two of you to survive. Your first trimester, still on a precarious edge, made the situation even more dire.
As you lay on the brink, losing precious blood that jeopardized both your life and the pregnancy, the doctor's solemn words hung in the air. "We need to sacrifice the baby, Dr. Jeon," he asserted, thrusting Wonwoo into a heart-wrenching dilemma.
For nearly two years, you and Wonwoo had fervently tried to conceive. Months before finally succeeding, you took a temporary leave from work, both of you eager and serious about embracing parenthood. That morning, you shared breakfast with Wonwoo, a newfound routine since leaving your job, radiating vibrancy. Little did you know, it would be the last carefree morning for a while.
During breakfast, plans for your day unfolded, with a lunch visit to a friend's bakery and a proposal for a cozy dinner at your favorite Italian restaurant. Wonwoo enthusiastically agreed, nodding his head in anticipation.
However, as the night unfolded, the joyous prospect of dinner turned into an unimaginable ordeal. Wonwoo found himself unable to fathom the idea of a simple dinner, haunted by the agonizing decision that awaited him at the hospital. Dinner plans shattered, replaced by the weight of an impending choice that would alter your lives forever.
*
Your condition deteriorated rapidly in the days following the surgery, prompting a transfer to the ICU. Wonwoo, seasoned in facing numerous medical challenges, found his usually steady hands clenched in despair. The grim reality unfolded – it seemed nearly impossible for you to survive in your critical state.
Mingyu, having discussed the delicate matter of abortion with Wonwoo, acknowledged the weight of the decision. He empathetically stated, "There has never been an easy decision from the first place," a reminder of the gravity of your precarious condition. Wonwoo, however, shook his head, unable to bring himself to make the agonizing choice.
"I just can't, Mingyu. I just can't," Wonwoo uttered, his internal struggle palpable.
"But you have to choose, Wonwoo. Do you want to put her in a more critical condition?" Mingyu pressed, emphasizing the urgency of the decision.
Three critical stabs had wounded your vital organs, and although the surgery was deemed successful, the unexpected internal bleeding cast a shadow over your recovery. The doctor who attended to you recommended aborting the baby, foreseeing the challenges it posed to your healing process. Yet, Wonwoo hesitated, unwilling to sign the abortion papers. He knew all too well that your instincts would align with his – a fierce desire to protect the unborn child, despite the grim reality that surrounded both you and your baby.
Lost in his thoughts, Wonwoo was startled when a stranger quietly took a seat beside him. Turning to face the unexpected company, he found the mysterious figure closely observing you through the window. "I can fulfill your wish," the stranger declared calmly, his presence sending a shiver down Wonwoo's spine.
Brows furrowed, Wonwoo questioned, "Who are you?" The stranger, with an eerie calmness, revealed, "I'm a demon. I can turn human wishes into reality." Wonwoo dismissed it, urging the mysterious figure to leave, suspecting a cruel game.
To Wonwoo's astonishment, the man produced a roll of paper, seemingly conjured from thin air with a spark of fire. As it unfolded, he offered a tempting proposition, "I can make the baby survive, and also your wife." The roll revealed contractual terms, symbolizing the gravity of the offer.
A smile played on the demon's lips as he proudly presented the conditions, "However, you could only live for ten years. You could only see them in ten years." Wonwoo, torn and desperate, shifted his gaze to you. In a hushed whisper, he asked, "Are they not gonna make it?"
The demon, seemingly unperturbed, conjured another roll, claiming, "Wait. Lemme check." As he read the ethereal text, he revealed an unsettling truth, "Your wife is going to have a heart attack in fifteen minutes. You won't be able to see her until tomorrow; she'll collapse." Wonwoo's lips tightened, wrestling with the weight of impending tragedy.
Seeking assurance, Wonwoo questioned the demon, "Can you really make them survive?" The man nodded, presenting the contractual sign. Floating in the air, it became a tangible representation of the choices before Wonwoo. Determination filled his voice as he uttered, "Please. Grant my wishes.
The demon, with a sinister smile, accepted, "Alright..." The unfolding events carried an air of impending consequence, as Wonwoo made a pact that would alter the course of his life and those he held dear.
*
Ten years ago, you made deal with the demon.
You have counting your life.
And the day is about to come.
To Wonwoo,
If you read this letter, I might not be here anymore. I just want to tell you that I love you, and I'm really grateful that I met you. It might be weird to you, but I did expect that I'm gonna leave first. So don't be too sad. Please continue your life peacefully.
I love you xx
02/11/2023
As the ink on the heartfelt message dried, the letter was consumed by flames.
The letter was burnt.

Humbug
Bangtan Christmas 2023 drabble 1 - read the rest here.
Paediatrician Dr Jung Hoseok is beloved by all his patients and everyone he works with. Unfortunately, his cheerful demeanour is only a front, underneath it all, he's a humbug.
Pairing: Hoseok x f! reader
Genre: Paediatrician Hoseok, social worker reader, fluff, smut
Rating: 18+
Word count: 6k
Warnings: Sex, swearing, medical emergencies
Hoseok looks up from the computer screen at the sound of his name. His eyes take a moment to adjust, the screen’s the brightest light in the otherwise darkened paediatric ward.
The nurse, Jihyo, holds out a mug of coffee, just how he likes it.
Hoseok accepts gratefully, stares at the words on the side of the mug.
Big patience for little patients.
He blinks, indifferent, and goes back to prescribing.
His phone rings, muted because it’s 3am but he can hear it loud and clear.
He lifts it to his ear. ‘Dr Jung,’ he says by way of greeting.
‘You’re needed in the ER,’ comes the crisp tone of the ER charge nurse.
Hoseok sighs, doesn’t bother to ask why. ‘I’ll be there in 5.’
He hangs up, signs the chart and gulps the rest of his coffee, scorching his tongue and the roof of his mouth but preferring the burn to the desolate pang of his empty stomach.
The dry sandwich he’d bolted at 6pm the day before is nothing but a distant memory, churning its partially digested way through his intestines.
He takes a shortcut to the ER, cutting through the works alley between buildings.
Ironic that he has to pass the unofficial smoker’s alley to get fresh air.
Kim Namjoon, his friend and the resident cardiothoracics surgeon, nods and waves a vape pen at him in greeting.
Hoseok lifts a hand back, pushes the back entrance door open that someone’s propped open with a brick, hospital security be damned, re-enters the hospital next to the mortuary.
He glances askance at the double doors. It always makes him feel a little twitchy passing the morgue in the early hours of the morning.
He reminds himself he’s a grown adult as he picks up the pace, allows himself a little sigh of relief as he turns the corner and sees the bright lights of radiology.
He’s greeted by a cacophony of noises as he enters the ER, monitors beeping, people barking out instructions, distant sirens as ambulances pull up to the drop off.
He narrows his eyes against the fluorescent white strip lighting, looking around for the charge nurse’s familiar navy tunic.
He spots her by the resus bay, grimaces a bit at the carnage from a trauma that hasn’t been cleaned up.
‘Called for a paediatric consult?’
The charge nurse nods, brisk, waves an arm in the vague direction of the paediatric area.
‘15 year old, intoxicated.’
With that she’s off, and Hoseok trudges away.
The atmosphere in the paediatric area is less jarring, not so much because of the cheerful murals on the walls, but because it’s quieter, less hectic.
Hoseok assesses a teenager in a glittery jumpsuit who smells so strongly of alcohol and hairspray he reminds him of his own high school leaving prom.
He does an assessment, makes the mistake of asking the teen if he wants a drink on his way out of the exam room.
The teen chortles gleefully.
‘Yeah, gin and tonic, hold the tonic!’
Hoseok rolls his eyes as he exits.
He’s looking for a free computer to write up his notes when there’s movement in the periphery of his vision.
‘Need a computer?’ you ask.
Hoseok blinks to wake himself up. You’re way too pretty considering the early hour. Judging by your attire, more casual than smart, your carelessly styled hair, he makes an educated guess.
‘Are you with social services?’
‘Y/N, duty social worker,’ you confirm, nodding towards the exam room he’s just exited. ‘Jaebeom’s one of ours.’
‘Yeah?’ Hoseok asks. ‘I’m Hoseok, paediatrics. I’m admitting him until he sobers up.’
You nod. ‘His foster carer can pick him up in the morning, she’s got another child that she needs to drop off at school.’
You look around, yawning delicately behind your hand. ‘Is there a place to get coffee around here at this time?’
There’s an on-call room waiting for him, a bed, but Hoseok doesn’t hesitate.
‘If you have five minutes for me to write up my notes, I can take you to the lounge?’
You give him a look he doesn’t bother to interpret, it’s now 4am and if you say no he can always go to bed.
‘Yeah,’ you say. ‘Thanks.’
Hoseok types up his notes with you sitting in one of the empty chairs in the otherwise deserted paediatric department.
When he logs off he’s amused to find you engrossed in sorting shapes to slot into a sphere.
‘I can give you a few more minutes if you want,’ he says, dry.
You laugh. ‘I’ll be quicker once I’ve had caffeine.’
You follow him down the corridor towards the main hospital to the lounge.
Hoseok swipes his ID badge, pushes the door open.
You take in the ancient mismatched couches, the big screen TV, the tiny kitchenette with the top-of-the-line coffee machine, the chipped mugs drying next to the sink.
‘So this is how doctors roll, huh?’ you say.
Hoseok laughs. ‘Yeah baby, stick with me and I’ll show you a good time.’
He waggles his eyebrows, and you burst out laughing.
Hoseok’s struck by your smile and the way your eyes light up. He clears his throat, tells himself to stop staring at you like a creep.
‘Latte?’ he offers, picking up the nicest mug he can see.
‘Yeah, thanks,’ you say.
You’re fishing in your bag, emerging with a half-opened package of cookies.
He exchanges your coffee for a cookie, gestures to one of the couches.
He’s not expecting you to sit next to him, there’s plenty of space, but after a moment, you choose the seat beside him.
You sip your coffees in silence.
‘Been busy?’ you ask.
‘Yeah, a little,’ Hoseok replies.
Up close like this, he can see the tiny piercings in your ear, the gleam of gold through the fall of your hair.
Again, he pulls himself together with effort.
‘Have you been busy?’ he asks.
You stretch a little. ‘Yeah. We’re short-staffed, like always. Also something about the cold weather makes people be shits to each other.’
Hoseok’s not surprised. Winter’s always hard, fuck Christmas spirit and all that jazz.
‘I hear you,’ he says.
You sip your coffee, offer him another cookie which he accepts.
Your phone rings in your bag, you glance at him as you fish your phone out.
‘Duty calls,’ you say ruefully. ‘Thanks for the coffee.’
Hoseok’s about to bid you goodbye when you lean towards him, close, thumb brushing a corner of his mouth so quickly he barely registers it before you’re pulling your hand away.
‘Crumbs,’ you say. There’s the tiniest twinkle in your eye.
Hoseok’s voice comes out raspy as he says, ‘Thanks.’
‘See you around, doc.’
You’re not waiting for an answer, shouldering your bag, tossing him one last look on your way out.
Hoseok leans back against the couch, willing his heartrate to decelerate.
Outside, the darkest part of the night’s just about over.
***
Hoseok’s working hard to keep his bright smile on today.
He’s had a parent ask him if he has kids and then tell him he couldn’t possibly understand how precious their child is, as he doesn’t have children of his own.
He got an email from a conference he’s applied to saying due to the huge number of applicants, his abstract wasn’t selected for presentation.
His intern, Hyunjin, seems to be on a mission to aggravate him as much as possible.
‘We need a derm consult,’ Hyunjin tells him at the end of presenting the patient he’s just seen.
Hoseok closes his eyes briefly, desperately summoning what remains of his rapidly dwindling stores of patience.
‘Why do we need a derm consult, Dr Park?’ he tries not to bark.
‘This patient has verrucas.’
Hoseok blinks, takes a breath.
‘This patient needs nebulised albuterol and oxygen and an admission to paediatrics. The verrucas can wait until he gets better and the mom can stop by a pharmacy for some over-the-counter verruca treatment.’
Hyunjin stares at him.
‘He’s satting in the low nineties,’ Hoseok points out, words coming out brisk, staccato. ‘I can hear him wheezing from here.’
The ER nurse behind Hyunjin’s already tutting and prepping the neb.
‘Was there anything else, Hyunjin?’ Hoseok asks, getting up, staring at the rapidly expanding list of patients waiting for a paediatric consult.
His phone rings, and he pulls it out of his pocket with a sigh.
‘Dr Jung,’ he says.
‘Is that Hoseok?’
The voice is vaguely familiar, but he can’t place it.
‘Depends who’s asking,’ he snaps.
‘It’s Y/N, the social worker. You got me coffee last week at 4am?’
Hoseok has a flash of a memory, of your hand on his face.
‘Shit, sorry,’ he says, running a hand through his hair, already sticking straight up in all directions, courtesy of the shitty haircut he got in the barbershop on his way in.
‘Rough day, huh?’ you say, the sympathy in your voice making warmth bloom in his chest.
‘Yeah.’
‘I was wondering if you wanted to go to dinner after work today,’ you ask, no preamble, so direct Hoseok takes a moment to process.
‘I’d love to,’ he says. ‘I don’t get off until 8, though.’
‘I finish at 8 too,’ you say. ‘That works for me.’
You exchange numbers, and you promise to text him details.
‘Hope your day gets better, Dr Jung,’ you say, the teasing note in your voice making him smile, genuinely, for the first time, today.
‘It already is,’ he says.
He’s still smiling when he hangs up.
‘Hoseok,’ comes a voice from behind him.
Hoseok raises a brow inquiringly at Hyunjin, who, inexplicably, is still standing there.
‘About the verrucas,’ begins Hyunjin.
‘Nope,’ Hoseok says, pleasantly, still smiling.
He brushes past Hyunjin and picks up the next consult.
***
It’s ten to eight and thank fuck for that, because Hoseok’s had enough of today.
He’s getting changed out of the scrubs he was forced to change into after he was projectile vomited on by a chubby 10 month old, grateful he has spare clothes in his locker, when the door to the changing rooms opens.
Hoseok pauses, shirtless, hands on the tie of his scrubs bottoms.
Hyunjin blinks at him.
‘Nice abs, boss,’ he says.
Hoseok eyes both the fluffy white tee he was about to change into and the scrubs top he’s just discarded, questioning why he ever thought going into medicine was a good idea.
He grits his teeth.
‘Yes, Hyunjin?’
‘There’s a blue light call - breathless five year old, ETA 3 minutes.’
‘Jisoo is on tonight, let her know,’ Hoseok replies. ‘Also, close the door, damnit.’
Hyunjin looks surprised at the three medical students who have clustered behind him, all of whom are staring at Hoseok wide-eyed.
‘Jisoo’s going to be twenty minutes late, something about a train breakdown?’
Hyunjin’s got the wisdom to stay out of Hoseok’s reach.
Hoseok’s hand lands on his soft t-shirt, longingly.
With a sigh, he bypasses it and reaches for his scrubs top, pulling it over his head.
‘I’ll be right there,’ he says.
***
By the time Hoseok’s assessed the breathless patient and handed over to an apologetic Jisoo, the time on the clock on the wall says 9pm.
Hoseok pulls his phone out, dials your number.
You answer on the first ring.
Without waiting for him to say anything, you say, ‘The food’s still hot, I took the liberty of ordering for you. Are you on your way?’
Hoseok breathes out, a sigh of relief so profound he feels lightheaded.
‘Marry me,’ he says. ‘I’ll be there in ten.’
He gets dressed in record time, emerges out of the carnage of the ER like a phoenix rising from the ashes.
You’re the first person he sees when he gets to the restaurant, and you’re the best thing he’s seen all day.
He greets you with a hug and a cheek kiss that you weren’t expecting, judging by the shy smile on your pretty face.
‘I —’ you start, then you stop, adorably flustered.
‘You’re beautiful,’ Hoseok says. ‘I’ve been looking forward to this all day.’
‘I was just going to say I ordered tempura that’s on its way,’ you say.
‘I’m sorry I’m so late,’ Hoseok says. He’s got his hand on yours on the table without any memory of how it got there, but he likes the feel of it.
‘Make it up to me,’ you say, easy.
‘I’m going to do my best,’ he promises.
***
At least four people have seen Hoseok’s bare chest today, but you’re the only person he cares about impressing, at least right at this moment.
Because holy fuck, you’re beautiful, pressed tight to him on your poky couch, mouth on his, lips and teeth clashing as he kisses you over and over.
You’re making noises that are driving him slightly crazy, making him feel hot and desperate, and he has to stop himself from looking at your tits in that black bra or he’s going to embarrass himself.
Shit.
Your hand’s slid down, brushing over his dick, and he’s so hard already he has to will himself not to nut right now.
He tugs experimentally at the strap of your bra, and when you don’t protest he tugs it down, cups the weight of your left breast.
God, you feel so good. Soft, warm, exposed nipple begging to be kissed.
He runs his thumb over your areola, a slow pass.
The low moan you let out gives him the confidence to scrape the tip of his nail over the peak of your breast.
‘God, take it off, Hoseok,’ you tell him, and Hoseok’s sure as hell not going to make you ask twice.
He slides a hand around your bare back, unhooks your bra, can’t stop himself from looking.
His dick, already trying to stand at attention in its denim prison, twitches at the sight of your bared breasts.
Hoseok’s trying to remember what colour briefs he has on, if it’ll be obvious when he takes his jeans off that he’s leaking precum just from looking at your tits.
Then you cup the length of him over his jeans, and he finds he doesn’t give a fuck.
Your skirt’s ridden up, your thighs part under his hand encouragingly.
You’re so soft Hoseok can’t suppress a groan.
He hooks a couple fingers under the gusset of your panties, tugs, and your hand lands on his.
Hoseok looks up, hand stilling.
Hoseok’s been told that he has a gorgeous smile, but just at this moment, you’re the one who’s blinding him.
‘You can touch,’ you say, voice husky, teeth in your bottom lip.
‘Yeah?’ Hoseok asks, his own voice raspy, dropped low.
‘Yeah.’
‘Can I taste?’
You help him tug your panties down, over the curve of your ass that he can’t resist squeezing.
He tugs the flimsy cotton down your thighs, helps you slide a leg out.
He realises, belatedly, that you never answered his question, but you don’t seem to mind as he bends down, flicks his tongue against your pretty cunt.
Damn, you sound even prettier when he’s eating you out.
Hoseok licks into your folds, nudges your clit.
He doesn’t have any hangups about giving head, especially not in a girl like you who seems to enjoy everything he’s doing.
‘Shit, Hoseok,’ you moan, breathless, eyes squeezed shut.
He pushes a finger into you, curls it, and you cry out so loudly his cock hardens even more.
He tugs at the button fly of his jeans, loosening them for a little relief.
‘Please tell me you have a condom,’ you plead, voice thick, so sexy Hoseok can’t believe you’re under him like this.
‘Yeah,’ he says. ‘Why don’t you come and I’ll fuck you?’
‘Fuck me now,’ you tell him.
Hoseok seals his lips around your clit, flicks his tongue, slips another finger into you, scissoring, pressing, slow, making every movement count.
‘Hoseok!’
He doesn’t reply, because he can tell by the way your thighs are shaking that you’re close.
He just needs another minute.
He doesn’t know if you’ve realised that your fingers are in his hair, pulling, but he’s taking it as a positive.
He keeps doing what he’s doing with his tongue, because you seem to like it.
Your cunt tightens around his fingers, you call his name again, buck your hips into his face, and Hoseok doesn’t even need you to tell him you’re coming because he can feel you pulsing, can hear it in your voice, can feel the way everything tightens as you reach your peak.
It’s the hottest thing he’s seen in a while.
Fuck.
Hoseok draws himself out of jeans, takes himself in hand, pumps once.
You haven’t forgotten him.
‘Get inside, Hoseok,’ you say, and as he fishes the condom out of his jeans you flip it out of his grasp and rip it with your teeth.
Hoseok closes his eyes as you squeeze the tip and roll it onto his dick, concentrating on not coming in your grasp.
You push him back onto the couch, get on top of him, and Hoseok could weep at the view.
Your hair’s a mess, your lips bitten and flushed, and goddamn, your tits need to be in a museum.
He doesn’t realise he’s said that last bit out loud until you burst out laughing.
‘Shut up, Hoseok,’ you tell him, but you’re still riding him so there’s that.
Hoseok grabs your hips, helps you move even though you’re doing a pretty damn good job already.
‘You like this, Hoseok?’ you ask.
Hoseok flexes his cock inside you. ‘Yeah,’ he says.
‘I like it too.’
‘Yeah?’
You lean forward, tits bouncing in front of his face, and Hoseok thinks that if he died right now, smothered in between your breasts, he wouldn’t mind one bit.
‘Go on, baby, take what you want,’ you say.
Hoseok bucks his hips hard, up into the wet warmth of your cunt, tugs your head down to kiss you deep, open-mouthed, and comes with a groan, deep in his chest.
Bliss.
***
Hoseok wakes in a bed he doesn’t remember getting into, a bedroom that he finds soothing, with its neutral colours and soft sunlight filtering in the crack between the curtains.
There’s an arm flung across his chest, the soft curve of a breast against his chest.
You’re turned away, boneless, in a deep sleep.
His incorrigible cock stirs as he takes in the line of your back, down to the tempting curve of your ass.
He spots the clock on the wall, groans when he realises he should really be up now if he wants to get to work on time.
You’re still dead asleep even after he’s fully dressed, splayed out in the sheets, gloriously naked.
Hoseok pulls the duvet over your bare shoulder, resists the urge to kiss your upturned cheek, and makes sure the door’s locked behind him as he leaves.
***
Hoseok tightens his scarf around his neck as he waits for you at the entrance to the Christmas market you’ve managed to convince him to accompany you to.
The fact is, he hates the cold, he thinks all Christmas markets are gimmicky and overpriced, and after a run of incredibly busy shifts, he’d much rather be in bed with you right now than here.
Hoseok sidesteps neatly as he’s approached by a jovial couple dressed as Father Christmas and Mrs Klaus.
He’s about to pull his phone out to check on you when you hurry up to him, tuck your arm in his.
‘Hobi! You weren’t waiting long, were you?’
Hoseok looks at your bright smile and can’t bring himself to say anything other than ‘no, not long.’
Your lips are cold, but the kiss you plant on his cheek, next to his mouth, goes a long way towards improving his mood.
He doesn’t even give the three elves handing out tiny candy canes a dirty look.
‘Crepes?’ you suggest, seemingly oblivious to the fact that the longest queue is in front of the crepe stand.
‘Sure,’ Hoseok agrees.
You get in line and immediately turn to him, sliding your arms around his waist, under his coat.
‘How’ve you been?’ you ask.
Hoseok and you have met up a couple times over the last three weeks, enough that he’s left a spare shirt and some toiletries at your place.
You’re sweet, and fun, and he hopes you like him as much as he’s starting to like you.
‘I’m better now,’ he says, just so he can admire the glow of your smile.
‘You’re cheesy,’ you say, but the brightness in your eyes tells him you don’t mind.
‘Nah,’ Hoseok replies. ‘You dragged us to this Christmas market, I know you’ve got your eye on one of those tacky reindeer tree ornaments, you don’t get to call me cheesy.’
‘I like the blue one,’ you say, conceding so easily Hoseok has to smile.
‘Wait here, I’ll go and get it,’ he says.
‘What crepe do you want?’ you ask, as he pulls away.
‘Surprise me,’ he tells you.
Hoseok walks over to the ornament stall you’ve been eyeing for the past five minutes, picks out the blue ornament, hesitates over the collection of tiny gold Christmas bauble earrings.
He makes a decision, pays, shoves his purchases into his coat pocket and walks back to you.
You hold a crepe out to him, and he accepts with a ‘thanks’, taking the warm paper-wrapped bundle out of your hand and taking a bite.
The warm melted chocolate floods his taste buds, and he tries not to moan at the gooey sweetness of it.
‘Good, right?’ you ask. ‘Worth the wait.’
You’re not waiting for an answer, skipping ahead, heading for the chestnuts and hot chocolate like you’re a walking Christmas cliche.
Hoseok follows behind you. He finds he doesn’t really mind.
***
You stick your key in the lock, unlock the door to your apartment, don’t bother with the lights before you turn around and slide your hands up Hoseok’s chest, fingers tucked under the lapels of his coat.
Hoseok doesn’t have a lot to say, not when you’re looking up at him, lips pouted for a kiss.
He slips a hand around the back of your neck, cupping your head, and tilts his head down to yours.
‘Mmmm,’ you murmur. ‘You taste like chocolate.’
Hoseok leans down again, kisses you deep, tongue sliding into your mouth.
‘It’s cold,’ he says. ‘Warm me up.’
He’s only half-serious, having you pressed against him like this is doing a hell of a job of warming him up.
The wicked gleam in your eye gets him the rest of the way.
‘Come on. Want to take a bath?’ you ask.
Hoseok makes out with you in front of the mirror in your bathroom whilst the tub fills, is a short second away from guiding his cock between your legs when you pull away, bend over in front of him to test the temperature.
‘Get in,’ you say, and Hoseok’s always been good at following instructions.
He slides into the warm heat of the bath, groans at the feel of it, reaches out to steady you as you climb in on top of him, right into his lap, impatient like he feels.
You look so good bare and wet like this, the steam making tendrils of your hair curl against your neck, the tops of your breasts visible above the water line. Hoseok hadn’t thought he could get any harder but he does.
‘Sit on me,’ he says, and there’s a slosh of water, wet skin against wet skin, and then the slippery warmth of your cunt, taking him in.
The tips of your breasts jiggle in front of him as you move, and between the tightness of your walls around him and the prettiness of your moans, Hoseok’s in heaven.
He slips a hand around your hips, helping you ride him, and curls his hand around your breast, lifting it out of the water so he can suck.
You cry his name as he flicks his tongue over your nipple, and Hoseok squeezes the flesh of your hip, tight, under the water.
Your rhythm’s erratic but it’s making the pleasure build, short, tight circles of your hips against his.
‘Hoseok,’ you moan.
‘Yeah?’ he mumbles, lips around the peak of your breast.
He flexes his cock inside you, hums in satisfaction at the way your face goes slack, eyes half closed.
Shit, you look so pretty in the throes of pleasure.
Hoseok slides a hand up, fingers curling around your neck, thumb pressed into the hollow between your collarbones.
Your voice is hoarse now, raspy like his, as he urges, ‘Go on, take it.’
He presses down, you gasp, and lose your rhythm entirely as you come around his cock, walls spasming around him.
Hoseok takes over, fucking you through it, hardening until he comes with a low grunt.
Wet, slick, warm.
You’re tired, he can tell, the way you’re slumping against his chest.
‘Come on,’ he says. ‘I’ll wash us off.’
He coaxes you into your shower with him, soaps over the marks he’s made on your skin, wraps you into a towel.
By the time you’re both in bed, you’re more asleep than awake.
‘Work tomorrow?’ you ask.
‘I’m working,’ Hoseok tells you. ‘Want me to set an alarm for you?’
He doesn’t get an answer, you’re asleep on his chest already.
He should get up, switch some lights off, but a moment later, he’s asleep too.

Hoseok never thought he’d see the day he would want Hyunjin to be around, but he’s getting slammed, and the way things are looking, he needs all hands on deck.
He’s jogging down the corridor to his second emergency call for the day despite it being only 10am. It’s busy even for the holidays.
‘House fire,’ barks Mira, the ER charge nurse as Hoseok snaps on gloves. ‘Three children, five minutes out.’
‘How bad?’ asks Hoseok, prepping an IV access kit.
‘PICU are aware, they’re sending backup when they can but they’ve got their own internal collapse, they’re dealing with an arrest on the neurosurgical ward,’ Mira replies.
The doors slide open, and Hoseok can already tell from the looks on the paramedics’ faces that it’s not looking good.
Fucking hell, where’s Hyunjin, what a day to be in resus training instead of on the floor.
The second patient’s wheeled in as the first is still being parked, and Hoseok’s surprised to see you accompanying them, covered in soot, but he doesn’t have time to process now.
All he can do is deal with what’s in front of him, so that’s what he does.
***
It’s well into the afternoon by the time all three patients are stabilised and wheeled up to the PICU.
Hoseok’s washing his hands mechanically in one of the resus sinks, buying his brain some time to come down from the adrenaline of the last few hours, when he hears his name called.
‘Hey,’ you say, holding out a cup to him.
Hoseok takes a big gulp of the steaming hot coffee. There’s sugar in it, he doesn’t usually have sugar in his coffee, but today it goes down smooth, giving him a much-needed glucose boost.
He drinks most of it before he can muster a ‘Thanks.’
You don’t seem to be in a hurry.
You’ve cleaned most of the soot off your face, but your top is ruined.
Belatedly, Hoseok notices a plaster on your arm, remembers that you came in with the ambulance crew and the three kids.
‘Are you ok?’ he asks.
‘I’m fine,’ you say. ‘I was just outside the house when the gas oven imploded. I saw the kids in the window and got them out.’
Hoseok blinks. He hadn’t been expecting that.
‘You ran into a burning house?’
You frown a bit. ‘It wasn’t burning then, there was just smoke everywhere.’
You cough, and he notices that your voice is a little hoarse.
‘Besides, I was right there and I saw the kids, I couldn’t leave them.’
‘Shit,’ Hoseok says. He pulls you into a hug. ‘I didn’t know.’
‘Do you think they’re going to be ok?’ you ask, resting your head on his chest.
‘I hope so,’ Hoseok says.
He pulls away. ‘Did they check your carbon monoxide levels?’
You laugh, and the tension in his chest eases a little. ‘Yes, doc, I’ve been cleared for discharge.’
You grab his hand, squeeze. ‘I’m probably doing better than you right now.’
‘This is why I hate Christmas,’ Hoseok blurts out.
You’re looking at him, but you don’t say anything, and he can’t stop anyway.
‘Everyone goes on about Christmas and goodwill and people helping each other and yet the same shit happens as the rest of the year. It means nothing, just a commercial holiday that big companies use to make money out of dumb people.’
‘It’s bullshit,’ Hoseok says.
‘My parents feel the same as you,’ you say. You give him a smile that doesn’t quite reach your eyes. ‘They never celebrated the holidays.’
‘They had the right idea,’ Hoseok agrees.
‘When do you get off today?’ you ask. ‘I can make us dinner, if you want.’
‘I don’t think I’ll be good company,’ Hoseok says, honestly.
‘You’re welcome, even if you’re the biggest grinch in the world,’ you say, with a sweetness that makes warmth bloom in his chest.
‘I’m not a grinch,’ he says, half-heartedly.
‘A humbug, then,’ you say.
You reach out and touch his cheek.
‘Come over, later, if you want.’
***
Hoseok finds himself outside your apartment after his shift, wondering if you really wanted him to come over.
You don’t keep him waiting long, soon enough you’re opening the door, handing him a glass of wine, putting food in front of him.
Hoseok hasn’t even so much as showered, he came straight from work.
You notice him looking at the half-decorated Christmas tree you’ve got in your lounge, the open box of ornaments next to it.
‘I like Christmas,’ you say. ‘I thought I’d cheer myself up by putting up a tree.’
You seem to be worried about his reaction, so Hoseok grasps your hand.
‘Just because I’m a grinch doesn’t mean you have to be,’ he says.
You smile. ‘My parents never had a tree and I always wanted one.’
The food and the wine are going a long way towards making Hoseok feel normal again after his day.
‘Are you going to see them for Christmas?’ he asks.
There’s a brief shadow across your face, so quick he isn’t sure if he saw it.
‘They’re doing relief work in South Sudan,’ you say. ‘They’re doctors too.’
You ask, ‘Are you away for Christmas?’
‘Yeah, my parents and sister are upstate. I’ll drive up to them.’
‘Are they grinches like you are?’ you ask, teasing.
Hoseok laughs. ‘I’m the only grinch in the family. My mother goes all out, and my sister loves Christmas too.’
‘Sounds amazing,’ you say, a hint of wistfulness in your tone.
Your top’s slipped down over your shoulder, and between the way your skin gleams and the way your lips are stained from the wine, you’re so pretty Hoseok’s distracted.
He reaches out, tugging you into his arms.
‘Can I take a shower?’ he asks.
‘Sure,’ you say. The mischievous twinkle is back in your eyes now. ‘Want company?’
‘Always,’ Hoseok says.
***
For once, you’re up before him the next morning.
He must have been more tired than he realised.
You’re fastening your bra in a feat of dexterity he’s always admired.
‘Shame I missed the show,’ he says, his voice raspy in the darkness of your bedroom.
‘Happens every morning,’ you say. ‘You’ve got an invite every time.’
Hoseok laughs, rolls over, sheet around his waist.
‘What time is it?’ he asks, propping his arm behind his head, looking out the crack in the window as the snow falling outside.
‘It’s 6am on Christmas eve,’ you tell him.
‘Shit, I gotta pack for tonight,’ he says.
You pull a sweater on over a tee, sit on the edge of the bed to put socks on.
‘I probably won’t see you until after the holidays, huh?’
‘I’m back in a couple days,’ Hoseok says, hand on the small of your back where your sweater’s ridden up.
‘Yeah. Merry Christmas, Hobi. Eat all the turkey for me.’
‘I don’t even like turkey,’ he says, honestly.
You laugh, amused, and cup his cheek. ‘See you after Christmas, grinch. There’s coffee in the kitchen.’
Your goodbye kiss makes him want to pull you back into bed with him.
***
Hoseok pulls up outside his parents’ house, rubs the back of his neck, trying to get the crick out.
He can see the living room and kitchen lights are on, and he already knows that when he opens the front door and steps in he’ll be greeted with familiar smells.
Cinnamon. Fresh bread. The chicken dish his eomma always makes the night before Christmas.
He realises with a start that he never thought to ask you what you’d be doing for Christmas.
He’d spent an hour finishing decorating your tree after you left your apartment, so that you’d have a fully-decked out tree when you came back from work today, and had only belatedly realised that perhaps you’d have had fun decorating the tree together.
He’d put the earrings he got you under the tree, hung the gloriously tacky blue ornament he’d picked up for you at the Christmas market.
He’d packed the red lace panties you’d tossed merrily in his face when you’d stripped for him the night before, in the shower.
Shit, maybe that was a creep thing to do.
Too late now.
The front door opens, and his sister stands in the doorway.
‘Come on, what’s taking you so long,’ she asks.
‘Coming,’ Hoseok says.
He grabs his bag out the trunk and goes inside.
***
Hoseok wonders if he’s even in the right place.
You’d once told him, offhand, that you often volunteer at the shelter close to your apartment on Christmas day, and when he’d gone to your apartment and you weren’t in, he’d driven here.
It’s a women’s shelter, and he’s trying to make himself look as harmless as possible as he waits to be let in.
A woman dressed in a light-up jumper opens the door, eyes him suspiciously.
Hoseok has a sudden feeling that he’s made a terrible mistake.
It’s too late now.
‘I’m Hoseok, I’m a friend of Y/N’s. Is she here?’ he asks
To his relief, the woman’s face transforms into a smile, eyes crinkling at the corners.
‘You’re the doctor friend she keeps telling us about! Come in, she’s here.’
The woman grasps him by the arm, pulls him in out of the snow.
‘She’s helping in the kitchen, you can help too, if you want.’
‘Sure,’ Hoseok says. Her grip on his arm is strong, there’s no way he’s going to say no.
He’s led to an industrial looking kitchen, dated but clean, greeted by the sounds of chatter and Christmas classics.
There’s mess everywhere, like Santa exploded, but all that falls away when he sees you.
You look up, spot him, and the smile on your face makes him smile too. He probably looks like an idiot, here grinning at you, but he can’t find it in himself to care.
You get up, and then somehow you’re in his arms, the reindeer headband you have on poking him in the jaw but he’s still not bothered.
There’s heckling, teasing, whooping, but all he sees and hears is you.
‘What are you doing here?’ you ask, holding him so tightly he can barely breathe.
He likes it.
‘I forgot to wish you Merry Christmas,’ he says.
‘Merry Christmas, humbug.’
Hoseok wants to argue that he’s not a humbug, not really, but you’re kissing him, so he shuts up and kisses you back instead.

(Not) The Right Time
Inspired by @creativepromptsforwriting Prompt #1085: Maybe this was not the right time. But maybe if he didn't try now there would never be time for it again. Fandom: 9-1-1 Rating: T Summary: Tommy's side of things between cutting short the first date and agreeing to the coffee date. Coda to episode 7x05.
Read on AO3
Tommy's phone started ringing just as their latest call came in. He fumbled it out of his pocket on the way to the pre-flight briefing and then stopped dead in his tracks once he got a look at the display.
Evan (118), it said and Tommy stood in the middle of the hallway, the phone buzzing away in his hand and his thumb hovering over the display indecisively. Unbidden, his mind produced an image of the last time he'd seen Evan, last night to be precise, when Tommy had left him standing at the curb in front of the restaurant. At the time, he'd been convinced that cutting their date short was the safest thing he could do. For both of them. That it was just as much self-preservation as the need to make sure he didn't push Evan into things he wasn't ready for.
But the way Evan's face had fallen in disappointment when Tommy had left had followed him all the way home and through the rest of the night. Looking back at it now, Tommy could admit his decision had been a little rash. Maybe even unfair. He liked the guy—
Before Tommy could make up his mind about accepting or declining the call, it went to voicemail and he felt like catapulted back to the present from his memory. Suddenly he was acutely aware of the bustling of the station all around him, of the engine noise in the distance, of someone walking past him in the hallway, a brief touch to his shoulder, "You coming with, Kinard?"
Tommy sighed and shoved his phone back into his pocket. Maybe it was for the best. Maybe this was not the right time.
He sat through the briefing, absorbing all relevant information on the requested flight, which was basically a standard air ambulance transport. Not an emergency per se, but the transport of an intensive care patient from a hospital in the suburbs to a specialized and better equipped clinic downtown. He checked the given coordinates, plotted the route in his mind, added weather conditions and looked for potential risks, not finding any.
Halfway through the meeting, Tommy felt his phone buzz again inside the pocket of his flight overall, with, what he supposed, was an incoming text message. It could be anyone sending him a text, he tried to reason with himself, but he couldn't quite shut up the part of his mind hoping it was from Evan.
He forced himself to listen to the additional information and medical requirements of the flight, even if they were more relevant to the attending aeromedic than to the pilot. He was nothing if not one hundred percent professional, but he couldn't shake the antsy feeling crawling up his back and the way his phone seemed to burn a hole through his pocket.
That was why he found himself lingering after the briefing, pretending to check the weather charts again when in reality he was waiting until everyone else had cleared the room. When he pulled his phone from his pocket for a second time that evening, he was surprised to find an actual voicemail waiting for him instead of the expected text. Tommy hit call, trying to ignore the rush of anticipation that seemed to hit him out of nowhere—
"Hey Tommy, it's Buck— uh, it's me, Evan," the message said and Tommy had to grin despite himself. He'd meant what he'd said, Evan was adorable and just hearing his voice shook up his resolve pretty hard. "Listen, I assume you have a shift and I don't want to bother you but, uh, I just wanted to talk to you. Call me back? Please? I don't have a shift until Monday night. Okay, uhm. Take care."
By the end of the message, Tommy's grin had transformed into a fond smile. Fuck, but he really liked the guy. He ducked his head and closed his eyes for a moment, phone tipped against his forehead in thought.
It would be a lie if he said Evan's words hadn't hurt. While it had been somewhat cute that Evan had called himself an ally after he admitted it was his first date with a man, the denial of their date a few minutes later and the blatant lie towards Eddie had stung.
Tommy sighed, looked back at the screen with the weather forecast as if it held the answers he was looking for.
He'd told Evan that he didn't think he was ready, but maybe it was more the other way around? That Tommy didn't know if he was ready to deal with the whole process of coming out and coming to terms with who you are again?
Because Tommy understood just too well where Evan had been coming from. He remembered too well how he had felt when he'd been in Evan's place. The feeling of being torn between who he thought he needed to be and who he really was. The lying, the hiding, the guilt, the constant fear. It hadn't been a good place. And it had taken Tommy so many years, so much time and work and effort to build himself a place where he finally felt comfortable—
Maybe this was not the right time.
But then he remembered Evan's bashful smile when he'd admitted "because trying to get your attention has been kind of exhausting", and how sweet his kiss had tasted and how surprised, how pleased he'd looked after. And the point is, Evan had really made an effort, had really wanted to get to know him, and Tommy can't remember the last time someone had gone out of their way for him like that. Sure, Evan hadn't been aware of his own intentions, and sure, Tommy had felt flattered by his attention but it had also felt—special.
And now Evan was reaching out, again, even after Tommy had basically dumped him halfway through their date. And despite all his own insecurities, and Evan's insecurities, wasn't it worth a try? Shouldn't he, after everything he's been through himself, offer Evan the kind of understanding and patience and support that he never got?
There were footsteps in the hall and Tommy snapped back to the present just in time for Martinez sticking her head inside the room, face lighting up at seeing Tommy.
"Hey, Kinard, here you are," Martinez said. "I've been looking for you. You coming?"
Maybe this was not the right time.
But maybe if he didn't try now there would never be time for it again—
"Yeah, sure, I'll be right there," Tommy said, "need to make a quick phone call first."

The ‘Andrew Lifestyle’ came after he left the Navy at a relatively young 40, and what to do with him now. I have seen conflicting views as to how the Trade Ambassador roll came about, but many reports of his rudeness and inappropriateness during dinners and meetings while in the roll. It also him access (and vice versa) to many people with influence and vast wealth, who would flatter his considerable ego, leading to major issues later on. In normal people’s life he was/is wealthy but the people he associated were way out of his league and he wanted that billionaire lifestyle , after all his mother was the Queen and he was a Prince of the realm.
Then we see the palace didn’t learn from their mistakes with Andrew, when Harry left the army at 30, he failed his officer promotion three times, and had a new commanding officer who actually treated him as a junior officer and expected him to put in the hours and do the job. So instead of the palace asking him what he intended to do post military, they let him become a full time royal before his brother the heir who was still working. With the much underestimated Palace PR they created relatable hero, lad of the people Harry who was only outranked in popularity by his grandmother. So we then have a not very smart, ego driven man who believes his own publicity, and resents not getting the recognition, status, and financial rewards he feels is his right. And then he marries expecting and actually getting a wedding of equal cost to his brothers, and his resentments escalate, fuelled by his equally ego driven wife.
I’m sure the RF in both situations thought they were doing what’s best , but sometimes the best decision isn’t the easiest and saying no in the long term works out better for everyone. But hindsight is easy and nobody at the time thought ‘here’s a choice that will come back and bite us on the bum in a few decades’.
So instead of the palace asking him what he intended to do post military, they let him become a full time royal before his brother the heir who was still working.
I don't think there was anything wrong with Harry becoming a full-time royal before William. William was in a public service position, albeit one with an incredibly narrow focus and very specific mission, with the air ambulance. And what is being a royal but for being in public service? So it balances out in the end.
Where the palace went wrong was by allowing Harry to call himself a full-time working royal but not actually forcing him to do the work of a full-time royal.
This is the chart of royal engagements from 2016, the first full year that Harry was a full-time working royal. (He left the Army mid-2015.)
(Link)
That's the source of hubris: he barely worked but got all the credit anyway, which is more credit than William ever got, and William was working essentially three jobs at this time (air ambulance pilot, royal/heir in training, and papa), compared to Harry's one.

Genuinely the last two hours of my shift was insane.
1pm: I visit a resident who doesn't need much help. I haven't checked on her all day except for bringing meals. Ask if she needs anything. "1000 boxes of chocolate" okay, that's beyond me, but I'll try for some chocolate! She's immediately trying to talk me out of it "it was a joke!"
1.05 pm: help a bloke into bed. He insists on first bumping me every minutes cos we're working well as a team. This genuinely made it harder, but so much more fun!
1.10 pm: paperwork
1.20 pm: sneak into the receptionist office looking for her secret chocolate. Encounter nurse. Explain what I'm doing and he goes, "oh, I stole some chocolate earlier, here, have the whole box!"
1.25: find four resident together, two walking pushing the other two on wheelchairs. Only one of the ladies in a wheelchair is okay with this. They are all fighting very loudly about who's being helpful and who isnt. Intervene, remove the lady in the chair who doesn't want to be pushed. One of the walking ladies grabs the others' 4 wheel frame and pushes it out of reach to punish her.
1.30: having returned the frame and de-escalated everything, I'm now outside with the lady in the wheelchair to show her the flowers so she knows things are calm. She's very happy with me. She used to volunteer with a native wildlife conservation group that spent a lot of time planting trees.
1.45: attend call bell. Resident is having a seizure. Wife is very upset. Get resident in bed, call nurse, help wife calm down
1.55: swing by first resident's room, give her a box of chocolates. She's overjoyed, can barely talk she's laughing so much
2.00: chat with colleague about the ladies' fight earlier. He heaves, like, the biggest sigh! Begin tea and coffee service
2.05: my involvement in tea and coffee service comes to end, as seizure guy has another seizure. Call a nurse, no answer. Colleague comes by and recognises the seriousness, I can hear her yelling at the nurse on her radio to come now while I try to keep the wife calm (seizures are very scary looking!)
2.20: nurse is here! She explains another resident has absconded, which is why they're busy. I know the bloke who's absconded well, so I volunteer to look for him. I no use to seizure guy compared to a nurse
2.25: meet the nurse who's outside searching. "I can't ask you to do this, because then I'm responsible for anything that might happen to you. But I would like it if you looked for him." Okay, fine, I get it i guess. Also, you snuck me chocolate earlier for that Resi, so I feel fond
2.30: I get lucky and find him. He dawdles back to the facility with me. We talk about political history and why there are no pubs in walking distance
2.45: hastily do my paperwork. Lots of behaviour charting today! And everyone wants to ask me where I found the missing resident (the answer isn't funny, but people laugh anyway, cos what else can we do? He got like three blocks away to the main road. He was trying to catch a tram. It's scary)
2.50: spend five min with seizure guy's daughter because she looked upset. Ambulance is here for him now and she'd left the room to give everyone some air
2.55: visit a resident in another wing who just got back from hospital. He usually visits me when I'm on shift so I was worried to not see him, sure enough he's very short of breath and can't walk far (hence going to hospital yesterday). Help him to bed, tell the nurses, they already know
3.00: home time!

ok.. bagginshield: bodyguard au, bilbo is a paramedic, and has amnesia. PLease i'm BEGGING
Sandy. My dude. I told you I had an idea for this but it became SUCH A BIG THING!! 😮💨😍 So I hope you can forgive the late due date with almost 3K of Bagginshield...where I couldn't use Thorin's name! 🤣 So without further ado...
Pairing: Bagginshield
Warning: Blood/Gore-ish
Words: 2638
“Back again, Mr. Baggins?”
Bilbo whirled around to see the nurse at the desk smiling sympathetically at him. It honestly only made Bilbo feel more pathetic as he played with the stems of the flowers he carried. Three days ago, he had done everything he could to help keep a John Doe alive in the back of his ambulance, and still he couldn’t get the comatose patient out of his mind. His cousin, Siggy, was right. He needed help. Or at the very least a vacation.
“You caught me.” He laughed nervously. “No one’s claimed him yet, have they?”
She shook her head sadly. “No, but he did wake up last night briefly! Dr. Greyham is very optimistic about his recovery.”
That was great news. Bilbo certainly hadn’t held much hope when they found him. Bloodied and beaten in an alleyway, responding to a good samaritan call hours after what they presumed to be a mugging. His pulse had been too low, and with the severity of the head wound, Bilbo had been afraid they wouldn’t find much brain activity. If he was in fact waking up though, it did make Bilbo’s visits a bit more awkward.
“Go on in.” The nurse encouraged. “He may appreciate having someone to talk things out with.”
Bilbo nodded and thanked her as he worked up the courage to enter. His relief was palpable when he saw that the man was still asleep. Just as he had been, Bilbo set his flowers in the vase next to his bed before taking a seat in the visitor’s chair. The man had gorgeous dark hair that was starting to get oily at this point. Bilbo knew he had been subjected to sponge baths for sterilization, but Bilbo mourned the lack of bathing for him. Luckily, they hadn’t had to cut much of his locks when they were stitching his head back together, but there would be a noticeable balding on the right side underneath all of the bandages. Bilbo hoped the man wasn’t too vain about his appearances to pitch a fit at that. Certainly Bilbo has treated plenty who were. The ‘saving their lives’ part falling secondary almost immediately.
Bilbo finally heaved a sigh and pulled his bag of knitting equipment off his shoulder as he settled in for his usual monologue. The first time he had done this, he had felt quite silly and was afraid that the man would wake up at any time to tell him off. However, he has come to find it almost therapeutic, talking to someone who can only listen.
“Well, Mr. Oakenshield. Not much to add on today. I finally got the last of those stubborn weeds out of my vegetable planter. Only I fear they will just return in a few days. With the rain we’ve been having lately, I wouldn’t expect anything less. You might be pleased to know that Detective Inspector Bard is looking into your case, but has yet to come up with any definite answers to who hurt you. Well, maybe he has. It’s not like I’m privy to police investigations after all. And well, let’s just look at your chart here…oh this is promising!
Dr. Greyham says that you are showing massive improvement. If you can ever finally pull away from this nasty coma, you shouldn’t expect any lasting damage. That’s quite lucky. Just last week my partner and I responded to a man who had gotten himself crushed under an air conditioning unit and…well I’ll spare you the gory details. Let’s just say that he won’t quite have the motor functions he used to.
I can imagine this is very good news to you. I’m mean, I’d hate to assume, but I’d imagine you enjoy spending time at the gym. After all, nobody your age looks like…that is to say you’re very…oh what the hell, you’re probably about the fittest person I know Mr. Oakenshield. Of course, even though Theo and Hamfast and Siggy all think that’s why I keep coming to visit you, it’s not. You see I’d quite hate for anyone to wake up alone after an ordeal like yours. I’d do it for…any John Doe you see, but I must admit there is something about you that I’m quite…AHH!”
Bilbo jumped out of his chair, dropping his knitting on the bed, as he backed up with a hand over his heart. The man blinked his drowsy, but confused bright blue eyes at Bilbo as if trying to make sense of him.
“I’m so…so terribly sorry.” Bilbo explained breathlessly. “This must all be rather confusing. Let me introduce myself. I’m Bilbo Baggins, I’m the paramedic who worked on you after we found you in that alley.”
“Alley?” The man repeated roughly as if the word were foreign to him.
“Um, yes. Let me just call your doctor real quick.”
Bilbo moved to press the ‘assistance’ button above the man’s head, when his hand snaked out to grab Bilbo’s arm. He felt himself gasp, both at the speed of the reflex and the tightness of his grip. No loss of motor skills, that was for certain. The man mumbled something to him, but it was in a completely different language. Bilbo felt his heart sink. He hadn’t accounted for this. The man was a tourist? That might explain why no one had come for him yet. The only problem was Bilbo was quite sure he didn’t speak whatever language the man was muttering in as it wasn’t Westron and certainly not Sindrian.
“I don’t…understand.” He breathed slowly. “Can you…understand me?”
The man furrowed his brows together before he slowly nodded his head. That was good! He was bilingual at least. Bilbo thought it was best to start with the basics.
“Can you tell me your name?”
The man opened his mouth only to close it and open it once more. After that, a look of horror crossed his face, and Bilbo’s attention was grabbed by the spiking heart monitor.
“No, no! It’s okay.” Bilbo rushed. “This is totally common for an injury like yours.”
Instincts took over, and Bilbo grabbed his hand in comfort as he slowly tilted his chin towards him looking for signs of a concussion. His pupils were certainly dilated and when Bilbo asked him to follow his finger around, it definitely seemed conclusive. Concussions and short term amnesia would be common with this type of injury.
“We’re going to start slow. You don’t remember your name right now, and that’s okay. What do you remember?”
The man took a deep breath as his eyes turned towards the ceiling. Before he could say a word though, there was a knock at the door. It didn’t seem unusual until Bilbo’s gaze fell upon the dry erase board next to the door. The John Doe wasn’t due for check-up for another hour, and Bilbo’s finger never made it to the assist button. Bilbo got up cautiously when his arm was grabbed again, but this time the man’s eyes were wide with panic.
“I remember someone was trying to kill me.”
Cold seeped into Bilbo’s chest as his heart thumped along to the adrenaline surging through him. Bilbo barely had a chance to say anything when the door was forced open. After that, it was like a scene from an action movie. Bilbo was thrown over to the other side of the bed as gunshots rang through the room. Cutting through the mattress that had previously been occupied. Bilbo instinctively covered his head, screaming over the noise, managing to wrench his eyes open just enough to check on the other man. What he saw, stunned him to silence.
The man was calculated, calm, and seemed to be running off pure muscle memory as his eyes remained wild and afraid. When the gunfire stopped for a moment, the man leapt into action. Taking one of Bilbo’s knitting needles, he shoved it through the throat of the assailant reloading his pistol, using him as a human shield against the second one as he barreled into him. Using his own gun to shoot him in the head. In seconds, Bilbo had gone from thinking he was certainly going to die, to staring at two gruesomely murdered bodies. The man certainly wasn’t done there. He poked his head out into the hallway only to curse and close and lock the door. He looked through the pockets of the dead men on the floor for another clip that he loaded into the gun in his hand with an ease that made Bilbo realize he was dealing with some sort of professional.
“Clothes.” He barked.
Bilbo raised his hands above his head slowly. “C-Clothes?” He repeated.
The man growled before pulling at his hospital gown with impatience.
“My clothes?”
Bilbo pointed at the cabinet behind him. As soon as the man spun around, Bilbo made a mad dash for the door. Before he could reach it, he was pushed up against the wall and held there by the deranged man.
“There are three more out in the hallway ready to kill the first thing that comes through that door. Do you want that to be you?”
Bilbo shook his head rapidly.
“Then help me get out of here.”
“Who are you?” Bilbo gasped after he was released.
The man had his back turned to him as he stripped down to nothing pulling on his bloodied and torn clothing from days ago.
“I don’t remember.” He grumbled.
“So how do I know I can trust you?”
“Considering the ease I just killed those guys, if I wanted you dead, I would have already done it.”
That was a rather grim, but valid point.
“Let me ask you something. Earlier, when you thought I was still asleep, you called me ‘Oakenshield’. Why?”
Bilbo could feel his mouth go dry at the question before pointing to the pin on the man’s chest. It seemed to be a coat of arms; only one of the symbols on the shield was an acorn. The man looked down at it as well, his face betraying some amusement. However, he didn’t deign commenting on it as he moved towards the pocket door that was shared between rooms.
“Don’t you think they’ll be waiting for you?” Bilbo asked.
“Only one way to find out.” The man explained before opening the door, pushing the heart monitor through it, and immediately closing it.
There was a shout, the sound of feet running towards the room, and more gunshots. The man quickly closed the door again before he or Bilbo could get hit before moving towards the outer door.
“Go! I’ll cover you.”
Bilbo didn’t have to be told twice as he raced for the stairwell hoping to find safety from this nightmare. He felt the bullets whizzing by before he heard them, and was definitely aware of the man returning fire as he followed after him.
“Only three!?” Bilbo complained throwing himself down the stairs.
“So maybe four!”
They went down a floor, but rather than keep going, the man shoved them into the door for the ER. It was utter chaos as doctors and nurses were trying to secure and placate patients and guests alike.
“This way.” The man urged, pushing Bilbo through the throng of people trying to get out.
They found a break room and shoved their way inside.
“Are we just going to wait here until the police get here?” Bilbo asked hopefully.
He could tell from the stern look he received that was not going to be the case. So what Bilbo was learning was this man had assassin level skills and didn’t trust the police. The situation he found himself in was looking bleaker by the second.
“Paramedic? Right?” The man questioned holding out a jacket with the hospital’s logo on it.
Bilbo had a sneaking suspicion the plan the man had was going to get him in a heap of trouble. Sure enough, seconds later found him pushing a gurney through ER to the doors on the other side.
“Sir! Just where do you think you’re going?” Bilbo was stopped by a frantic nurse.
Bilbo flashed his ID.
“Ma’am, this is a comatose patient of Dr. Greyham that can’t be off life support for more than twenty minutes. I’m supposed to get him in a bus and to Tuckborough Medical ASAP. Doctor’s orders.”
She hesitated before nodding, going as far as to call in the ambulance for him. Bilbo was going to have to remember how much he owed the staff at Hobbiton General another time. As soon as Bilbo had the man loaded up, he pulled away the sheet and climbed into the passenger seat next to Bilbo.
“Okay, you gun wielding, knitting needle stabbing manic! I have done everything you asked. I’m most likely going to lose my job for this if they don’t see fit to throw me behind bars. So you better have something you can give me or I’m pulling over at the next police precinct.”
The man grimaced. “I told you. I. Don’t. Remember. I just know they are the bad guys. And they want me dead.”
Bilbo gave a little sarcastic laugh and head tilt. “Oh, great.”
“There is one more thing.”
Bilbo slowly looked over at the man as much as he could without crashing the ambulance.
“It only started to kick in when you called me ‘Oakenshield’, but I was…protecting something…or someone.”
“That’s…vague.” Bilbo complained.
“But this…” The man sighed with impatience before pointing towards the pin on his chest. “Is the clue. It’s the coat of arms for the royal family of Erebor.”
“Erebor?! Like halfway across the world Erebor?”
“Really? Halfway across the world? Where exactly am I?”
Bilbo drew in a shaky breath starting to finally hit the point of ‘too much’. It’s funny. One would think that moment was…oh, about fifteen minutes ago with all the shooting. The other man seemed to realize it as well.
“Look, I’m sorry. You’ve been very kind to me and if you want me to…walk away, I wouldn’t blame you. I just feel like if I’m able to retrace my steps, I’ll find out what was so important it was literally worth dying over.”
“This isn’t a spy movie. You could just be patient and let the healing naturally take over.” Bilbo suggested with a huff.
“Judging by our friends back there, I don’t think I have that kind of time.”
Bilbo looked over at the man one more time. That lost look that has been in his eyes since the moment he woke up was still there. And despite everything he’s seen, everything he’s experienced that should have him running for the hills, Bilbo really wanted to believe him. And help him if he could.
“Alright.” He sighed. “I’ll show you the alley where I picked you up. But after that, I’m done. And if I get picked up and questioned by the cops, I’m telling them the truth!”
“Fair enough.” The man shrugged. “But could you do me one more favor?”
Bilbo raised an eyebrow.
“Could you stitch this bullet wound in my side?”
Bilbo cursed at the red staining the man’s dark shirt as he pulled over to the side of the road.
“I expect to be billed for all the times I have to play ‘personal physician’ because I can’t imagine this being the last time.” He complained.
The man let out a roaring laugh that had Bilbo’s cheeks warming all the way to the tips of his ears. This was very not good. It was bad enough when he had a crush on his comatose patient. He had no idea how to handle falling for this bodyguard/assassin/psychopath. Jury was certainly still out on which one he may turn out to be.

Book 17 of 2024 (★★★★)
Title: Humvee: American Multi-Purpose Support Truck Authors: Ben Skipper ISBN :9781526789815 Rating: ★★★★ Subject: Books.Military.20th-21st Century.US.Misc.Vehicles, Books.Military.Misc.Modelling
Description: "With its characteristic wide track, low silhouette and its distinctively deep exhaust note the Humvee sets itself apart from the range of light utility trucks it replaced. Fully air-portable, the Humvee features an aluminum body seated on a steel ladder chassis, powered by a 190hp V8 engine. Introduced into service in 1985, the Humvee remained pretty much unnoticed until its baptism of fire during the invasion of Panama in Operation Just Cause. It wasn't until almost a year later, in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm that the Humvee really came into the public eye. As a result of its newly found fame its manufacturer, American Motors General, started to produce a civilized version for public consumption, with sales and profile boosted by Hollywood patronage. At the same time the Humvee continued to serve in some of the most dangerous US operations undertaken to date. From the streets of Mogadishu to the Balkans, the Humvee developed into a vehicle far removed from its original design intentions. With some 17 variants now in service, from the basic troop carrier to the awesome Avenger Anti-Aircraft system, this Humvee LandCraft title provides the modeler with a rich vein of inspirations and subject. This title looks at the process behind the design and development of the Humvee and how American Motors General were able to fulfill a complex design brief to deliver a single vehicle that was able to replace a host of in-service vehicles. This title will chart how the Humvee grew from a light utility truck into a versatile platform whose modesty hides its potential. With its specially designed track, impressive ground clearance, waterproofed electronics and ability to carry a one ton load, the first Humvees were light years ahead of the vehicles they replaced. With its unique suspension and transmission systems to its unique engine arrangement this 4x4 is capable of feats normally only afforded to tracked vehicles. With some 17 versions in US service the Humvee fulfills its traditional role as cargo and troop carrier as well as special-weapons platform, ambulances, Direct Air Support vehicles and communications shelter vehicles. After 35 years of service the Humvee has changed from soft skinned run-about to a lightly armored force protection asset. Fitted with a larger engine, interchangeable armor, specially designed escape windows and a unique blast chimney, the Humvee's story is indeed proof that development of military vehicles never stops. For the modeler there is nothing more important than the little things and this image-rich section of LandCrafts' Humvee title delivers the goods. Filled with crisp images that chart the Humvee's development, combined with informative accompanying text, forms an enviable visual guide for the enthusiast and modeler alike."

Here we go. I found a chart meme from the Government of South Australia's health department on the different symptoms of Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke.
Image text:
KNOW THE SIGNS HEAT EXHAUSTION: Headaches Nausea and vomiting Fatigue, weakness, and restlessness Thirsty Anxiety Poor coordination Weak, rapid pulse Sweating heavily Raised body temperature WHAT TO DO Lie down in shade or air-conditioning Drink water Cool compress or tea towel Cool shower or bath HEAT STROKE: Headaches Nausea and vomiting Rapid pulse Extremely thirsty Dry, swollen tongue Disoriented, dizzy or delirious, slurred speech Body temperature more than 40c Convulsions, seizures, or coma May be sweating, skin may feel deceptively cool WHAT TO DO Call 000 (i.e. Emergency Services) immediately Reduce temperature until ambulance arrives
Also worth noting*: If you have recently had heat exhaustion or stroke, you will have reduced heat tolerance for a while thereafter. It often goes away after weeks-to-months, but not always! If you've ever had heat stroke or severe heat exhaustion before, you may be permanently less tolerant of heat thereafter, and need to be even more careful!
* I learned about this and that it applies to me by reading some articles on the topic several years ago. 80+F heat reliably makes me nauseous ever since. Brief Google confirms my memory of the articles again today.
if you are dealing with extreme heat or even just. moderate heat in your area right now. 80f/26c is when it starts getting toasty for a lot of people. if you are in a heat wave and you have not done yourself the favor of googling fucking "heat exhaustion symptoms" i am shaking you violently right now. look it up. burn the symptoms into your brain. heatstroke is no joke and it can and WILL sneak up on you before you're aware it's even an issue. ohh my god

Demystifying Travel Insurance: Charting the Course to Secure Adventures
The world unfurls like a captivating storybook, inviting you to explore its vibrant cultures, breathtaking landscapes, and exhilarating experiences. Yet, amidst the excitement of booking flights and crafting itineraries, a crucial element often gets relegated to the back burner - travel insurance. This seemingly insignificant detail can be the difference between navigating unexpected detours with confidence and facing financial setbacks. Here, we embark on a comprehensive journey into the realm of travel insurance, equipping you with the knowledge to chart the course for a secure and unforgettable adventure.
Understanding Your Traveler Profile: Plotting Your Course Before Takeoff
Before embarking on a comparison voyage, take a moment to introspect and understand your traveler profile. This self-assessment helps tailor your insurance needs to your specific travel style and potential risks:
Destination Deep Dive: Consider your target location. Are you venturing to a developed nation with robust healthcare or a remote location with limited medical facilities? Traveling to a country with expensive medical care necessitates a policy with higher medical expense coverage limits.
Activity Agenda: Imagine your itinerary. Is it a leisurely sightseeing tour or an adrenaline-fueled adventure packed with skydiving and white-water rafting? More adventurous trips typically require more comprehensive coverage, including add-ons for specific activities.
Trip Timeline: Plan your timeline. Is it a quick weekend getaway or an extended vacation spanning multiple weeks or months? Longer trips typically warrant higher coverage limits to adequately address potential trip cancellation or interruption costs.
Budget Buoyancy: Assess your budget. How much are you comfortable spending on travel insurance? While comprehensive coverage is ideal, it's crucial to find a balance that doesn't exceed your overall travel budget.
Unveiling the Essentials: Core Travel Insurance Coverages
Most travel insurance plans provide a combination of essential coverages, forming the bedrock of your financial protection:
Trip Cancellation/Interruption: This acts as a life raft, reimbursing you for prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if you're forced to cancel or cut your trip short due to covered reasons like illness, injury, natural disasters, political unrest, or even a terrorist attack. Scrutinize the policy wording to understand the specific reasons covered under trip cancellation/interruption.
Medical Expenses: Imagine facing an unexpected medical emergency abroad. This coverage acts as a financial lifeline, covering medical treatment costs incurred in case of accidents or illnesses. This is especially crucial if you're traveling to a country with expensive healthcare. Ensure the coverage limit is sufficient to cover potential medical expenses, including hospitalization, emergency surgery, and medication costs.
Emergency Medical Evacuation/Repatriation: Picture a scenario requiring specialized medical care unavailable at your travel destination. This coverage ensures you're not left stranded; it covers the cost of transporting you back to your home country for medical emergencies. Consider the policy's evacuation and repatriation limits, as air ambulance services can be extremely expensive.
Baggage Blues Relief: Lost, stolen, or delayed baggage can disrupt your travel plans. This coverage acts as a safety net, reimbursing you for lost, stolen, or delayed checked baggage. Depending on the policy, it may also cover essential items you need to purchase while waiting for your luggage to arrive. Review the coverage limits for lost baggage and ensure they're adequate to replace your belongings.
Travel Delay Detour: Flight delays can throw your itinerary into disarray. This coverage provides compensation for additional expenses incurred due to a covered travel delay, such as unexpected overnight stays or missed connections. This can include reasonable hotel accommodation and meals while you wait for your delayed flight.
Beyond the Basics: Unveiling Optional Coverages
While core coverages form the foundation, several optional add-ons cater to specific needs, allowing you to customize your travel insurance plan:
Adventure Sports Enthusiast: Are you a thrill-seeker planning activities like skydiving or mountain climbing? A standard policy might not suffice. Look for an adventure sports add-on that explicitly covers these specific activities, ensuring financial protection in case of injuries sustained during your daring pursuits.
Trip Cancellation for Any Reason: Imagine unforeseen circumstances like a job loss forcing you to cancel your trip. This broader coverage allows cancellation for any reason, even if it's not explicitly listed in the policy. However, it typically comes at a higher premium and may have limitations or exclusions, so read the fine print carefully before opting for this add-on.
Gadget Guardian: In today's digital world, losing your electronic devices can disrupt communication and cherished photo memories. This coverage acts as a guardian, protecting your electronic devices like laptops and cameras from damage or theft. Review the coverage limits for gadgets and any exclusions that might apply, such as wear and tear.
Choosing the "best" travel insurance isn't about finding a one-size-fits-all solution. It's about crafting a customized shield that aligns with your specific trip, risk tolerance, and budget. By understanding your traveler profile, assessing the core and optional coverages, and meticulously comparing policies, you can embark on your adventure with the peace of mind that comes with comprehensive protection.
Remember, travel insurance is an investment in a secure and worry-free journey. It allows you to focus on creating lasting memories, knowing that unexpected events won't derail your meticulously planned escapade. So, pack your bags, compare those policies, and get ready to explore the world with the confidence that a well-chosen travel insurance plan provides!
