It seems these plushies will be making their first appearance at a winter TWST exhibit in Japan! They’ll be available online as well.
Wow, there’s a lot of variety in the colors, shapes, and designs in this batch! It’s over 3 years of TWST now, so it’s nice to see these event outfits again (and not just the Halloween and Birthday outfit plushies); it’s like walking down memory lane.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The gift calendar is like an advent calendar; you open the number the corresponds to the days counting down to the holidays and get a new present for each day. However, this particular calendar is exclusively holiday messages from 23 TWST characters (22 of the core cast + Grim, I assume).
It is not yet clear if these holiday messages will be like the White Day cards (written in English) or if they will be written in Japanese. The sample image appears to show text horizontally, but this should not be taken as confirmation.
There’s also three different post card + sticker decoration sets.

New Birthday Boy visuals being used for a variety of items, including wafer cards, charms, and full body acrylic standees.
Each boy is holding up numbers representing their birthday!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shoes and earrings inspired by the seven dorms!! These are a collaboration with the brand MAYLA.
Wah, they’re so fancy and nice to look at but the earrings also seem hella heavy 😭 Why does TWST always do jewelry collabs and why do the earrings always gotta look so nice—

Welcome to Revenge of the Underrated!
Some of you asked me to put a "haven't watched both" to be more fair to the more unknown movies, but I've seen other tournaments doing this and I think it limits too much who can participate in the polls. So what I decided to do is a double elimination!
What does that mean? That means a movie has to lose twice to be eliminated. In other words, there will be a sorts of losers bracket that'll be part of main bracket. I'm undecided on whether to do this for only one round or the whole bracket, as it would make the tournament very long. Do let me know if you have any opinion about it.
Anyway, Revenge of the Underrated, Round 1:

Advent 23: Jingle Om - Part 2
Lister was going mad.
'Look at that, Kryten!' he hissed. 'Look at the way Rimmer and the Cat are bouncing around him like puppies. It's so sad to watch.'
'Indeed, sir,' Kryten agreed as he wiped the table in front of them.
'What's he got that I haven't?'
'Oh, lots of things,' said Kryten. 'Personal hygiene, dress sense, superior social skills, an engaging personality -'
'I have all of those qualities!'
'You do, but in smaller quantities. Earlier this evening, I overhead him discussing Risk with Mr Rimmer.'
Lister scoffed. 'He's into Risk? What a nerd!'
'His body language displayed subtle signs of being bored, but he chose to engage fully with the conversation, listened attentively, and asked questions to gain a deeper understanding of the game. Mr Danny may not like Risk but he was interested in understanding why Mr Rimmer does. He made him feel valued.'
Lister rolled his eyes.
'And right now the topic of conversation is fashion - the Cat's special interest. But look! Danny is constantly looking between the Cat and Rimmer. Everytime he notices Rimmer disengaging he gently draws him back in by asking for his opinion, knowing Mr Rimmer has an artistic streak. It's a balanced conversation and no one is feeling left out, it's masterful.'
Lister slumped back in his chair.
'I'm feeling left out,' he admitted. 'Don't look at me like that, Kryten. I'm all grown-up, I can cope with the guys being interested in someone new.'
'That's very mature of you,' said Kryten. 'And don't worry, the novelty will soon wear off and the Cat and Rimmer will soon come scuttling back to you.'
***
Lister sat alone in the bunk room, strumming away on his old guitar.
'Last Christmas I gave you my heart....but the very next day you gave it away...'
Think it sounded bad? Yes, but double the badness and you'll be closer to the mark.
Rimmer practically came bouncing into the bunk room. There was a rose tucked behind his ear. Lister almost snapped his guitar when he saw it.
'I like Danny,' Rimmer sniggered as he flopped over the back of the sofa. 'He's great, isn't he? He's into music like me, sang Bon Jovi just for me.'
Lister shook his head. 'I like classical music too!'
Rimmer slumped onto the seat next to Lister.
'You can't play,' he said bluntly.
'Did you find out how our lives diverged? I bet it was something hugely significant like I was adopted by a millionaire TV vet or I solved the murder of the Royal tortoise -'
Rimmer was shaking his head. 'No, no. No. Danny wrote a Christmas hit: Jingle Oms. Went straight to number 1, he's been living off the royalities ever since. It's quite catchy really: Jingle Oms, Jingle Oms, Jingle all -'
'You're joking!' Lister was appalled. 'That can't be it!'
'Sorry,' Rimmer shrugged. 'He got lucky. And he's not that good a guitarist either, first to admit it. But he's so charming and sweet and makes everyone feel good...He's been teaching me how to meditate. I never really understood it before, but the way he explains it, suddenly it makes sense.'
'Alright, alright, I get it! He's a saint!'
Rimmer stood up unsteadily. 'I'm going to bed...I didn't even drink but I feel awful now...'
'As your friend, your real friend, you're supposed to be taking it easy.'
'Yeah, yeah,' Rimmer muttered, waving a hand dismissvly. 'Don't be such a square....jingle oms, jingle oms....'
Lister jammed his hands over his ears.
***
The following evening, Lister wanted to scream when the bunk room door opened and Danny staggered over the threshold, carrying Rimmer bridal style. Lister felt his insides writhe at the sight of Rimmer with his arms hooked around Danny's neck, a length of purple tinsel hanging off his shoulder and trailing to the floor.
'What happened?' asked Lister. 'Did he drink too much?'
Danny grinned sloppily. 'Nah, guy's just wiped out exhausted that's all.'
He dropped Rimmer heavily onto his bunk and began tucking the blanket around him.
'He's not supposed to over doing it,' said Lister. 'He's not been well.'
Danny held up his hands. 'Sure, but he needs a bit of fun too, let off some steam. As the chocolate bar adverts used to say: work, rest, and play! Night night.'
Lister fumed silently.
***
'I don't like it, Kryten. I mean, I'm not going to tell Rimmer what to do, but it's weird, it's weird, right?'
Kryten shuffled. 'I'm sure it'll be fine, sir.'
'What? What are you not telling me?'
'After last night I checked on Mr Rimmer's Light Bee stats.'
'And?'
'It seems that since Mr Danny arrived....Mr Rimmer's stress levels have signifcantly decreased, while at the same time his happiness has increased....when Danny carried him to bed last night, the Light Bee began to generate high levels of oxytocin.'
'What?'
'Mr Rimmer has fallen in love with Danny.'
'What?'
'He is strongly attracted to your other self.'
'What?'
'His Hard Light drive is working over time sending dopamine, adrenaline, and oxytocin surging around his brain every time he sees or even thinks about Danny. He has the hots the Danny, he has fallen head over heels for Danny. He has fallen in love with Danny, Dave.'
'Wait, so Rimmer's in love?'
'Yes, sir.'
'Fine. Fine. Fine. And just to be clear, Danny is a real human, isn't he? And not some kind of polymorph or emotional vampire or some rubbish like that?'
'No, sir, the psy-scanner has made it quite clear that Danny is a true human being and - wait, no, the psy-scanner has just updated and good news for you, sir, he is a Touch Telepathist, possibly of the dark kind.'
'A what?'
'Touch Telepathy is a rare psychic ability found only in about 2% of the human population; they can read the thoughts of others simply by touching them. Some TTs use their powers for good, becoming Judges or therapists and so on; but others, use their powers for selfish reasons. The worst of them are so narcissistic that they actually posses the ability to manipulate the feelings of their victims, gaining their trust and adoration while draining them dry.'
'Danny's an emotional vampire?'
'Worse than that, sir. Dark TTs are barely human. Back in the 23rd century humans began to modify themselves, inserting GELF genes into their DNA so that they could become more powerful. But in doing so they are constantly in need of a power source in order to maintain their psychic abilities. Historically, Holograms are their favourite targets - often lonely, and vulnerable after death, and with Light Bees that can provide an endless supply of energy. They give all their love and affection to the vampire, get sucked dry, and are abandoned. And this was happening way back when Holograms had very few rights. They couldn't defend themselves.'
Lister rubbed his face, blood pounding in his ears. 'That smegger is supposed to be me? No, no way! He's nothing to do with me!'
'No, he's not, sir,' Kryten said reassuringly. 'None of us are responsible for what our selves do in their own dimension.'
'But he's not in his own dimension, is he, Kryten? He's in ours, lowering the tone! Where's Rimmer? We have to find him before he's sucked dry.'
'I believe they meet in the Parrot Bar.'
***
Danny ran a thumb over Rimmer's cheek.
'Oh, come on now, Arnie, just say yes. You don't want to feel lonely for ever, do you?'
'No,' said Rimmer.
'And you feel safe with me, don't you? You feel happy with me. You feel happy.'
Rimmer sighed. Every time Danny touched him he felt safe and happy and content. No one had ever made him feel like that before.
'Yes,' he agreed.
Danny smirked. 'Then say you'll come with me. Go on. You know you want to.'
Rimmer bit his lip. It was the smirk he didn't like. Not just that, but being told how he should be feeling. And hearing himself mindlessly agreeing with Danny - without an argument? That was unsettling.
'Arnie, you're keeping me waiting.'
'I want ice cream!'
A look of irritation flashed across Danny's face, but it was quickly hidden away. He took Rimmer's hands in his, rhythmically running his thumbs over Rimmer's knuckles.
'You can have ice cream when you say yes to me. When you say yes, then you'll truly be happy. Isn't that what you want?'
Rimmer giggled.
'No, I don't.'
Danny was confused. 'You don't what?'
'Happy,' Rimmer smirked. 'My brain never lets me be happy.' He snatched his hands away. 'You are an absolute creep!'
Danny leapt forward, grasping Rimmer's forearm. 'We'll do this the hard way, pal!'
Rimmer winced as Danny began diverting energy straight from the Light Bee's battery into his own heart.
'Let go!' Rimmer gasped, but Danny held onto him tighter.
'I could've made you so happy!' Danny snarled. 'You could've burnt out feeling loved and safe, but forget it! I'll just let you die feeling a total loser - no one will ever love you!'
Rimmer felt weak. A suffocating feeling of despair was settling over him like a heavy blanket.
'I'm alone,' he said flatly.
'Always,' said Danny. 'But don't feel too bad, Arnie, you're almost finished.'
Rimmer shook his head stiffly. 'No,' he said flatly. 'No, I'm not.'
'Why do you keep arguing back?!' Danny yelled at him. 'Just shut up!'
Rimmer thought carefully about his response.
'No,' he said.
Danny screamed in frustration.
'Just give up!'
Again, Rimmer thought hard about this. He was very tired and Danny's order still had a certain appeal, but obeying would mean being agreeable for once. Not really Rimmer's style. He'd rather die arguing for the sake of it.
'No,' he repeated, and switched into Soft Light mode.
Danny's hand fell straight through his, sending Danny falling head first from the table.
Rimmer dropped to the floor, panting. Danny snarled as he leapt forward, pushing both hands into Rimmer's chest and grasping his Light Bee.
'You didn't think that through, did you, Arnie?'
Rimmer switched back into Hard Light, trapping Danny's hands inside his own chest.
'What the hell?' Danny shouted.
'If you keep draining my Light Bee....' Rimmer gasped. 'It'll explode when it reaches 2% power....and even then it'll be enough to tear your smug head off your shoulders and embed itself in the wall....'
'Sounds good to me, Arn! I'm not going to let you win!'
Rimmer would have countered, yet again, but there was no time as Lister finally showed up to hit Danny firmly over the back of the head with a bazookoid. And then did it a second time, just to be sure.
Rimmer quickly brushed away his tears of relief.
'You're late, Lister!'
'Yeah, sorry about that,' said Lister. 'By the way you have a little...you've got a vampire stuck in your chest, man.'
Rimmer nodded. 'I know.'
***
They set the Dimension Hopping device to random mode before handcuffing Danny to it. Rimmer and Lister both took great pleasure in pressing the On button together, sending Danny flying off to some unknown world.
'Hopefully an unpleasant one,' said Rimmer dryly. 'Strange man.'
'Cat, how did you escape Danny's charms?' Kryten asked. 'For a short time, you seemed smitten too.'
The Cat shrugged. 'I'm a cat, we're indifferent.'
***
The next evening, Lister and Rimmer sat on the rail of the observation dome, sampling ice cream flavours from the different planets and moons of the Solar System.
'This is traditional Ioian ice cream,' Rimmer said, passing Lister a small tub.
Lister swallowed a spoonful and flapped his hand excitedly.
'It's spicy! I love it!'
'It's the only thing I miss from home,' Rimmer agreed. 'Spicy ice cream shouldn't work but somehow it does. If I ever go on Desert Islands Discs this is what I'd take as my luxury item.'
Lister laughed. 'Why would they have you on Desert Island Discs?'
'Because when I'm running the Space Corp, Listy, they'd be lucky to have someone as interesting as me on.'
'Fair enough. Still be curry for me.'
'Everyone knows that.'
'You'd come visit me on my desert island, wouldn't you, Rimmer?'
'Yes, of course. I mean, I imagine our desert islands would be next to each other, within swimming distance. A crashed Starbug lying in the sea...coconuts, mangos, fish, sun...'
'Sounds good. I could swim over to your island on tuesdays and you can come to mine on thursdays.'
'You know, Listy, it's almost Christmas day and you still haven't lassoed that moon for me.'
Lister sat closer to Rimmer.
'I'm getting to it. Just need to find the right one.'

The X-Men Project : Children of the Atom
Tumblr media
Uncanny X-Men 1-23 (1963-1966)
Collected in X-Men Epic Collections 1 : Children of the Atom
I’ve started this project a few times, and haven’t gotten too far -- but my main goal was to read through the main canon of X-Men comics chronologically for some time now.  I’m taking a new approach this time - reading them via trade paperback (and sometimes omnibus).  And of course in doing so, I’ve got to start at the beginning - which may be part of the reason this keeps slowing me down from getting too far.
Because I have to start with Silver Age comics.
So… long comic book history story short - the Golden Age of comics started in the 30s with the advent of comic adventures and super heroes.  Batman, Superman, Captain America - all larger than life heroes that kids could fall in love with.  And kids did - until the war came and changed things and comics were on the decline for a while and then - bam!  The 60s happened, and both DC and Marvel flourished in brightly colored, campy glory.
The thing about Silver Age comics, though, is that these stories, while iconic, sure; were written for 8-12-year-old boys growing up in the early sixties.  There’s kind of a simple, standardness to all of them.  And while I won’t argue that modern day superhero comics are the cutting edge of literature or anything, Silver Age comics feel antiquated in a charming albeit somewhat dull way.
Here’s the thing though - I’ve only read X-Men Silver Age comics.  The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, The Avengers, and even Hulk were regarded in much higher standing.  And while Stan Lee’s idea to have superheroes naturally have powers -- unlike the plethora of humans being bombarded by radiation and getting their powers through increasingly more ridiculous ways - The X-Men were unique among superheroes.  But that didn’t make them all that interesting to read.  In fact - X-Men was the lowest read book for most of its original run.
So… is it really that bad?
Let’s break it down!
The first trade paper I’m covering is part of the Epic Collections series - and covers the first 23 issues of Uncanny X-Men (the original run, which was just X-Men, I don’t think ‘Uncanny’ came until Chris Claremont).  It’s mostly written by Stan Lee (who leaves after issue 19 and is replaced by Roy Thomas) and drawn by the infamous Jack Kirby (who also leaves the book around 19, though other artists were helping with book many issues before).
I feel like there’s a bit of novelty when you say Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.  But I think there’s a difference between nostalgia and quality.  Stan Lee is… fine as a writer.  I don’t think he does anything that special with the X-Men (while I haven’t read any other Silver Age - I’ve heard his work on other books was much better).  Jack Kirby’s art, though, is classic and clean and is the more interesting aspect to these comics.
Each of the comics run a little bit in the same way.  We get an introduction (or reintroduction) to our heroes, the rise of some villainous conflict, the first fight in which our heroes lose and the second fight after a regrouping where our heroes win -- or on rare occasions things are postponed until the next issue.  Story arcs weren’t really a thing, neither was characterization.  Most of the comic is action based with the heroes using their powers to fight the bad guy.  And that’s, well, kind of it.
The X-Men
The original line-up of X-Men might feel a little odd to people who are used to the movies or modern day comics.  Everyone knows that Charles Xavier founded the X-Men and runs a school in New York, but half the cast of the original movie hadn’t even been created yet.
Charles Xavier - Mutant ability: Telepath and Telekinetic.  In a wheelchair.  The X-Men kind of all look up to him as a father like figure (especially Cyclops who is an orphan).  There are some aspects of his characterization that don’t necessarily hold up well -- such as his uncomfortable admiration of Jean Grey.  He also just has some odd unethical morals -- there are too many of these comics that end with Xavier literally just wiping out the bad guys’ and even civilians’ minds just to end the conflict.  He also had the tendency to fake his own illnesses to teach the X-Men a lesson.
Scott Summers/Cyclops - The Leader - Mutant ability: shoots lasers out of his eyes.  Cyclops probably has the most distinct characterization right out of the gate.  He’s moody and broody and tormented about his mutation.  He’s interested in Jean Grey right from the start but can never tell her his true feelings.  (This is the closest we get to any kind of human interest drama in these comics - though it’s infrequent and never built upon.)  He takes life and his X-Men-ing very seriously.
Warren Worthington III/Angel - The Playboy - Mutant Ability: Wings.  He can fly! He’s charming! And… that’s about it.  He’s rich and kind of has a flippant attitude about anything.  But it’s kind of hilarious at how lackluster he is.  He also sorta has eyes for Jean because you can’t have romantic drama without a love triangle.
Hank McCoy/Beast - The Brainiac - Mutant Ability: Giant limbs and superhuman dexterity.  This was long before Beast was Blue! And it even takes a few issues for him to be defined as the smart one.  You can tell that whoever was writing Beast had a thesaurus next to them, as Beast cannot talk like a normal person.  He and Iceman are (kind of by default) bffs - though that isn’t developed as much in this first batch of issues.
Bobby Drake/Iceman - The Jokester - Mutant Ability: Can freeze things, including himself.  He’s the youngest of the X-Men, and is always goofing around, never taking anything that seriously.  You can tell he’s supposed to be the comic relief, but I don’t think actual humor was Stan Lee’s strong point.
Jean Gray/Marvel Girl - The Girl - Mutant Ability: Telekinetics.  Jean’s telepathy really isn’t developed until after the silver age.  Unfortunately, Jean isn’t written much beyond being a love interest for Cyclops and Angel - and checking off the obligatory woman box.  She doesn’t really even get a chance to shine (even though she clearly could be and will be the most powerful of them) -- every time she uses her powers she always grows tired really quickly and has to have one of the men save her.  It’s definitely eye roll-y how stuck in their time these comics are when it comes to gender, but it’s also not egregiously offensive.
I have to point out that all of the X-Men at this point are supposed to be teenagers.  With the exception of Iceman, none of them really act like teenagers - and they’re all drawn like they’re in their mid-twenties.  It’s a little bit comical at how not good they were depicting teenagers.
The Villains (worth mentioning)
Every superhero team has their rogue’s gallery, and while the Silver Age is notable for having some hilariously ridiculous super villains, there are a handful that are worth mentioning, including some that become downright iconic in the X-Men world.
Magneto - Master of Magnetism.  Long before his tragic WW2 history and his retconned BFF status with Xavier, Magneto was the original X-Men villain who definitely knew how to chew the scenery.  No seriously.  He might be over the top and ridiculous but he has the most distinct personality of any of these original villains, which does make him stand out.   Also, it’s kind of hilarious how much Magneto’s use of ‘magnetism’ breaks the laws of physics.
Brotherhood of Evil Mutants! - let by Magneto.  Most of these guys are actually going to stick around for the long haul.  We have Toad (who is Magneto’s main lackey) and Mastermind (who will later become part of the Hellfire club) but most importantly Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch -- who, incidentally, were run out of Eastern Europe by an angry mob and rescued by Magneto himself, for whom they feel they owe a debt to.  They spend most of their time feeling torn about their decision until they eventually hop on over to join the Avengers later down the road.
Namor - who is just hilariously sassy in his one appearance.  Magneto and Xavier astro project themselves to fight over which side he’s on, and he eventually tells both of them to screw off.
Unus the  Untouchable - he doesn’t really make a big splash or anything, but I’m entertained that Beast was able to make a ray gun that amplifies this guy’s reflection power to the point where he can’t grab food.  Why he isn’t propelled from the Earth is beyond me if his power is pushing objects away from him, but hey, Silver Age Comics at their finest.
The Stranger - I kind of love this guy and it’s a shame he never makes a reappearance - ever I believe.  He’s an alien checking out Earth and when Magneto annoys him too much, he whisks him away and abandons him on some desolate planet.  He’s also sassy.
The Juggernaut - whom it’s set up from the beginning - was Xavier’s step brother.  Ngl, I was surprised when I read that.  But he’s as big and dumb as he always is.
The Government & the Sentinels Project - they’re rather fully formed.  Another thing I was surprised about when I first read it.
Mimic - Another character who doesn’t really come back all that often.  It’s a dude who can absorb everyone’s power at once.  He’s really kind of an ass about it, too, but he is the first official add on into the X-Men even if he leaves right away.
Notable Things
Thematically, one of the big things about the X-Men is the fact that they are persecuted for being different.  Their minority status is kind of baked into the premise, and it’s something that’s going to permeate throughout the rest of the series.  It’s most notable when the government and sentinels come into play.
It’s kind of fun to look at these as a time capsule of the 60s.  Everything has this 60s futuristic feel about it -- with all the ray guns and quirky costumes and reliance on nutty science.  It very much is a product of its time.
Cerebro is a thing! I thought it came later - but Xavier came up with it very early on.  Kind of funny out of all the bonkers things they come up with in the Silver Age this one makes a lot of sense and sticks around.
Favorite Issues
Issue #1 - It isn’t that ground breaking or even that memorable.  But it is the first issue and I think it is a pretty decent introduction to the characters.  I also want to note that I think the first X-Men movie was inspired by this first issue.
Issue #4 - Not a favorite issue, actually, but a notable one.  The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants make their first appearance here.  I’d say the X-Men’s personalities kind of solidify here, too.
Issue #6 - Namor makes his sassy appearance.  I think this is the issue where I found I could actually tolerate the ridiculousness of the Silver Age.
Issue #11 - The Stranger appears and it is delightful.
Issues #12-13 - Not only do we get Juggernaut’s first appearance, we also get a huge chunk of backstory for Xavier.  It’s actually a really tense couple of issues as Xavier tries to explain his path as this unknown entity slowly encroaches on the mansion.  It’s probably my favorite two issues of this particular run.
Issue #18 - Everyone comes back from the whole sentinel saga that had taken up the previous three issues only to find that Magneto has been hiding out and capturing them all (Along with Angel’s parents).  Iceman is the only one left and has to rescue them all.  It’s kind of a clever concept.
Least Favorite Issues
Issue #10 - We get our first introduction to the Savage Land; this weird place in Antarctica that’s like the jungle with dinosaurs in it.  I’ve never been a fan of Savage Land stories as they usually bore me to tears.
Issues #20-23 - This is just after Stan Lee leaves.  And while Roy Thomas is not doing a terrible job or anything, these villains are just dull and unmemorable, and at this point I want to just get on to the next volume.
Final Thoughts
Once I get past some of this introductory stuff, I'll be able to make these reviews shorter. I feel like I've read a lot of these issues a hundred times because I haven't made it too far with this project. Glad to be finally moving forward.
Look - these aren't the best X-Men comics out there, but as someone who came into the Silver Age kicking and screaming, there is some charm to be found. But they aren't the comics that I'd normally read for fun.

hii jj 👋🏻 for your cute december event: may we have zhongli + hail ? OR if that doesn't spark any inspiration perhaps zhongli + hibernation? whichever one you do, i hope you're having fun writing it! thank you in advance, hope you're doing well and taking care of yourself <3
It's Day 23 of JJ's Advent Calendar! Also, hi, Rin! <3 Thank you so much for your request! I decided to go with "hibernation" because I was in the mood for some domestic fluff, and I hope you enjoy the blurb. Have a good day/night and take care too! <3
Day 23: Zhongli + “hibernation”
You were sure that your bed had never been cozier than today, partly because of the fresh scent of the clean sheets, but even more because of the man by your side. With a quiet, content sigh, you snuggled up to Zhongli, taking in the familiar and comforting warmth of his body as you buried your face in the crook of his neck. “Can we just stay here for the rest of the day?” you mumbled, your breath softly caressing his skin as you spoke. “Or even for the rest of winter, maybe?”
Zhongli chuckled. As an Adeptus, he had never been overly sensitive to cold temperatures but he still couldn’t deny that it was much nicer to lie here with you instead of wandering around in the snowstorm outside. “A charming proposal, my dear. I too am not overly fond of this kind of weather… but we both know that humans usually don’t hibernate.”
You pulled away, propping yourself up on your elbow and resting your head in your hand. “Who said I’m going to sleep the entire time? There are a dozen other things I could do while lying here. Reading a book, for example. Or talking to you. I could also just daydream about spring,” you mused. Then, a grin flashed over your face, and you leaned in to brush your lips against Zhongli’s. “I could also kiss you from time to t- hey!”
You let out a yelp when he wrapped his arms around you, quickly trapping you in a tight hug. He pressed a soft kiss to your forehead, then your temple and the tip of your nose before he finally kissed your lips, and you felt yourself melting into his touch. With Zhongli, it was always like that. His kisses never failed to make you feel like you were the most adored person in all of Teyvat.
“’From time to time’ will not be sufficient, I’m afraid,” Zhongli said with a smile. “In exchange for staying here with you, I demand at least three more kisses.”
You laughed. “Alright, my beloved God of Contracts. Come here.”

Gifts Headcanons – Jujutsu Kaisen Characters; Advent Calendar Day 23

Tumblr media
❄ It’s canon for Yuuji to be a good cook. I think he would invite you over for a simple dinner made by him. And when you think it’s all he has prepared, Yuuji gives you a small box with either a silver necklace or a bracelet that has a heart-shaped charm attached to the chain. He’s really hyped when he sees you looking closely at the gift, but you can swear that stars appear in his eyes, when he shows you that the charm opens, and it has a picture of you two together on the one side, and an engraving saying “I love you” on the other.
❄ Megumi is really in love with you, but he’s not sure how to show you these feelings. That’s why he searches all over the internet, hoping he’ll find some useful information. When this plan fails, he just goes to Nobara for advice. She has to be a literal queen when it comes to gifts so your present is surely neatly packed and it’s exactly what you’ve wanted. Gumi takes you on a date, just as she suggested, and does everything she’s told him to do. The only thing he hasn’t agreed with Kugisaki is an envelope with a handwritten letter given to you at the end of the date; every word in it comes from the bottom of his heart.
❄ Nobara has prepared you a gift a few months in advance. She’s the queen when it comes to presents, knowing exactly what everyone needs and craves, buying only on discounts. Sometimes it’s scary – how accurately she chooses gifts for every individual. But you can’t complain. You get exactly what you need, exactly what your heart desires, and she’s happy because you’re happy.
❄ Gojou buys a random (probably way too big) paper bag and gives it to you with his credit card loosely thrown in it. He then tells you that he has gotten a day off from work, and you both can spend it however you want. The idea is to go to a shopping mall and, by using the aforementioned card, buy everything you want, but if you want to spend his money in another way (for example: shopping online and ordering takeouts), he’s also down for it. Satoru just wants to spoil you; your choice in which way.
❄ This specimen organizes his car for a road trip, the main attraction of the travel being very cliche but romantic stargazing at the top of the hill. Getou buys a lot of snacks, your favorite drinks, everything you could possibly need, blankets, pillows, he even decorates the trunk with Christmas lights. Suguru definitely is a man that chooses experiences over material things, so he makes sure you’ll remember this trip.
❄ I think that Nanami doesn’t like surprises. He insists on exchanging gifts only after you talk about what you want. He may even buy it when you two are shopping together, but it doesn’t change the fact that you only get it on Christmas Day, not even a day before.
❄ Toji doesn’t know the feelings of being loved and appreciated. By which he also doesn’t understand the whole Christmas phenomenon. When you tell him about the gift-exchanging-idea, he’s like huh??? why??? it doesn’t make any sense??? but agrees to it anyway. I can see Toji buying you just cute clothes or jewelry, or anything without much consideration. He wants to get it over with. But after he receives presents from you, after you shower him with all the love, all the affection, the appreciation, when you show him the meaning of Christmas spirit, he promises himself he’s going to give you the best gifts next Christmas.
❄ Maybe it’s because I’ve already written over 50 ideas for gifts and my creativity is gone, but I can see Sukuna being the biggest dork and idiot on the Earth. What do I mean by these words? Well, he gets your name tattooed on his body so as to show you his devotion towards you. He thinks that it’s the best gift possibly you could ever get. Ohhh, and he also gets it in this funky italic font or a very very manly, i eat wood for breakfast one; no in between.
❄ He’s a family man. Choso’s biggest dream is to spend the whole holiday season in yours and his brothers’ company all together. So he grinds extra hard in work, and then buys tickets for you and all of his brothers (little reminder that if we include Yuuji there’s nine of them) to Disneyland!
❄ Mahito forgets about Christmas. He’s surprised when you pop out in front of him with a gift and doesn’t know how to act and what to do. He simply panics. Being the dumbass that he surely is, Mahito plays silly buggers, telling you that he has ordered something online and, un-for-tu-na-te-ly, it just hasn’t arrived on time. He pouts, whines, and complains about the post office that always slacks off in the Christmas time, while opening the gift you’ve given him with literal sparkles of excitement in his eyes. But do not worry, he’ll give you something, a few days later though, but the intention is what matters the most…
❄ Inumaki prepares you a few smaller gifts. The first one is, of course, the onigiri he prepares with your favorite ingredients with a sprinkle of love. The next one is a card he makes himself (Toge doesn’t believe in the idea of buying cards). Then comes something you’ve told him you want months before Christmas (it’s a little trinket, probably one that you’ve forgotten you wanted in the first place). The last but not least thing is a youtube premium subscription – Inumaki’s just tired of hearing annoying ads whenever you watch videos on your phone next to him lmfao.
❄ Maki buys you something that reminds her of you. It can be something connected with your hobby, something that is in your favorite color, something that gives her your vibe, it can be literally anything. One moment she’s in a shop, not even searching for a gift for you, the next one she’s already bought it.
❄ Yuuta gets you a matching set of jewelry. He thinks that matching hoodies or shirts are too cliche (especially the king/queen, king/king or his/hers/theirs ones), but he’s really fond of subtle silver jewelry. It probably has tiny engravers with the first letters of your names that are invisible at first glance or with your favorite flowers!
❄ We can all agree that Toudou has taken you to at least one of Takada’s concerts. He just wants to share his passion for this cute idol with you! But what he craves even more is your happiness. And that is why Aoi decides to buy you two tickets for your favorite band’s concert, so that you both can go and see it, giving you the opportunity to show him something that is as valuable to you, as Takada is to him.

Christmas Markets To Visit In Europe
Tumblr media
Christmas is the time of the year when we forget all about our inhibitions, rifts and anger, and come together as friends and family to enjoy the holidays. Some people prefer to stay indoors with a book of old tales and warm hot chocolate, some like to party, while most love to survey the beautifully decorated Christmas markets to get their hands on some gorgeous Christmas decor and goodies. When it comes to Christmas shopping, the place which comes to mind is always Europe. The continent boasts the most exquisite Christmas markets, with its adorably decorated streets and shops. Some of them must visit these markets. The look of a Christmas market is no less than a scene from a fairytale, the lush green brightly decorated trees, mouth-watering delicacies, ice rinks, holly and ivy wreaths, all add to the charm. Some Christmas markets that are extremely popular are,
Cologne, Germany
Date: 22 November 2021 to 23 December 2021
Description: This is known for the various Christmas markets that light up the city on the banks of the beautiful Rhine river. The market in “Cologne Cathedral”, “The House Elves’ Winter Fairytale Christmas Market”, etc, are simply amazing. There is no place like Cologne for Christmas, with more festive markets than you can shake a magic wand at. You can enjoy ice skating at the Heumarkt ice rink circuit, which is quite popular, dancing to DJ set up at Heavenue, shop for handcrafted items usually found in the Old Town. Sipping mulled wine is another thing people enjoy here. Especially the one from the boat bar by the harbour. Throughout the holiday season, this picturesque German city serves as the ideal setting for imaginative yuletide evenings.
Budapest, Hungary
Dates: 19 November 2021 to 2 January 2022
Description: Known for homemade handcrafted gifts and tantalizing Hungarian desserts, “The Advent Basilica” is home to one of the most ethereal Christmas markets in the whole world. The most famous tourist attraction is the light show on the St. Stephens facade. Vörösmarty plaza, in the centre of Budapest, hosts the city’s largest and longest Christmas market. It begins in mid-November and ends on December 31st. Every day, you can enjoy free concerts by various Hungarian musicians in addition to the numerous food stalls and artisan stores. Budapest is proud of its craft collection, and fortunately, the items for sale are genuine works by local artists – both classic and contemporary designs.
Prague, Czech Republic
Dates: 27 November 2021 to 6 January 2022
Description: known for a zealous Christmas spirit, this place is a treasure chest of beautiful medieval architecture and conventional nativity scenes. Melodic choirs, giant Christmas trees, and stalls selling locally crafted ceramics, embroidered laces, hand-blown glass baubles, hats, gloves, and scented candles can all be found at these lovely markets.
Tallinn Christmas Market, Estonia
Dates: 19 November 2021 to 2 January 2022
Description: 60 stylish and cheerful wooden huts sell handcrafted wreaths, lamps, sheepskin blankets, gingerbread, local honey, and mulled wine in Town Hall Square. While visitors enjoy visiting the different cafes on Town Hall Square throughout the summer, the area becomes a refuge for festivities during the winter, with open-air concerts, fairs, and a variety of other fascinating activities. Musicians and dancers delight the audience with their performances during the holiday season. The big Christmas tree, which has stood tall since 1441, is a show stopper, despite the beautifully crafted snow sculptures.
Plaisirs d’Hiver, Belgium
Dates: 26 November 2021 to 2 January 2022
Description: When you visit Belgium, make it a point to celebrate Christmas as you have never done before. The fair, which runs from November 26 through January 2, 2022, is noted for its sweet delicacies. In the stalls, shoppers can get Christmas presents, hand-blown glass ornaments, and much more. Spend some time on the ice rink and the Ferris wheel before heading to the Brass Band Café for fluffy Belgian waffles, caramelized apples, and seasonal sugar doughnuts. Concerts, board games, dances, choirs, and cartoon projection are just a few of the entertaining and creative activities available at the market.
Skansen Christmas Market, Sweden
Dates: 26 November 2021 to 19 December 2021
Description: The market will be open at the Skansen open-air museum on the island of Djurgarden. As you walk through old homes and farmsteads decorated for the holidays, you will be struck by the splendour of Skansen. Those who want to make their Christmas more memorable and innovative can take part in the traditional dance performances that happen at the the festive tree in Bollnas square or they can even make their own Christmas decorations at a workshop. You can put your Christmas shopping on hold and enjoy delicacies like smoked turkey, almonds and waffles. Since, 1903, the famous Christmas market has featured everything from handicrafts and chocolates to hand-crafted candles and secret Christmas gifts.
Each of these markets has released a set of Covid protocols that need to be strictly and sincerely followed, as these protocols are for the safety of all visitors and tourists. Spending time at Christmas markets has been an annual custom that has been followed since time immemorial, and to continue to do so, they will have to act responsibly during these trying times. It would be a good idea to inquire about the entry norms beforehand, most markets are accepting negative covid reports, while others might accept covid vaccine certificates too.
While almost all these markets are accessible via public transport, as a tourist or a foreign visitor, it is always a good idea to rent a vehicle of your own. This gives you the freedom to roam around as per your whims and fancies, this will allow you to make as many stops as you can, even for something as small as an adorable little stocking, without the driver telepathically trying to tell you to hurry, or trying to mask their emotions each time you ask them to stop. Well, there is a perfectly convenient solution to this little hiccup that threatens to sour your holiday mood, and that is an International Driving License. With a few easy and simple clicks, you can apply for an international driving license, and get your international drivers permit online from ITCA. With this permit in hand, you can navigate these markets at your convenience and desire. Happy Holidays!

1, 4, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 23, 24, 25
1. Song of the year?
I don’t know what that means but my favorite song atm is Dream Sweet in Sea Major by Miracle Musical
4. Movie of the year?
I think I watched maybe two movies this year that weren’t MST3K lmao
If MST3K does count, however, then it’s The Touch of Satan.
If it doesn’t, then it’s I Married An Alien From Outer Space or... something like that, I can’t remember the exact title but you can guess the premise. Surprisingly not an MST one, though of similar quality.
If we mean good movies though, then... hmm. I did watch Good Will Hunting which is critically acclaimed and boring as all hell. I’ll take the Martians and Satan any day of the week.
8. Game of the year?
I did not play many games but I did play Zoombinis. And Pokemon Black which I’m in the middle of now. Heck yeah.
11. Something you want to do again next year?
Not much to be honest. I’d like to repeat as few things from this year as possible. I’d like to try going to the aquarium again, but since I didn’t actually get to do that, it probably doesn’t count.
12. Talk about a new friend you made this year
Sure, I’ll talk about @gay-for-stanford. He’s cool, knows how to animate which is impressive, is good at art and has two dogs and a teacher who looks like James Mason as Captain Nemo, which is fantastic.
13. How was your birthday this year?
Uneventful but that’s how I like it. Also a HUGE improvement on the year we were getting our house refinished so they painted all our windows shut and I had a panic attack. Nothing could ever be worse than that!
14. Favorite book you read this year?
I’m actually forgetting most of what books I read this year. I think I’ll go with Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke!
19. What’re you excited about for next year?
The Green Knight with Dev Patel as Sir Gawain. Here’s hoping it happens!
20. What’s something you learned this year?
Face masks are murder in summer but delightfully warm in winter so I may start wearing them in winter forever. I mean they’re nicer than a scarf and keep away the flu and colds!
23. If you could send a message to yourself back on the first day of the year, what would it be?
“Biden wins so don’t stress too much about the upcoming election, trust me, there’s gonna be enough shit for you to worry about without that.”
24. Did you keep any New Year’s Resolutions?
I don’t think I made any last year? So no, but that’s okay
25. Did you create any characters (in games, art, or writing) this year? Describe one
YEAH! I accomplished almost nothing this year but my two actual accomplishments are completing OC-tober/Inktober for the first time, and the advent of the Wizard Story.
To commemorate I’ll talk about Wurm.
Wurm is a Cave Wizard (which just means he’s a wizard who lives in a cave). Like most wizards, he went through a magical girl transformation upon gaining his powers and now he looks like an oversized olm/dragon thing. And he is pink and slimy which is how he got his name.
Wurm is very kind and gentle and a friend to all. He is skilled at charms, but not too skilled at baking. Or, honestly, much else other than charms. But he has his one thing he’s good at and he’s going to stick with it, darn it!

Animated Special Advent Calendar
Tumblr media
Updated: December 23, 2019
Every year since my oldest first became interested in TV watching, we’ve watched classic Christmas specials annually. What started as a happy accident with an enamored three-year-old wanting a nightly dose of cartoon Christmas goodness, became a family tradition, and we now try and watch a different special every night between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, with family members rotating picks, youngest to oldest.
After mentioning this several times online, a few folks expressed interest in what we watch, so I’ll try to keep this page updated with daily entries, though I admit we’re not tyrants about doing this (it’s supposed to be fun!), so if we miss a night, we just try to watch two (or more) another time to catch up. The daily picks mean our line-up changes every season (variety is good!), though there are definitely a handful of annual must-watch specials on every family member’s mental lists, and we always finish on Christmas Eve with the 1966 classic, Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
We’ve got a huge collection of DVDs and digital specials we own, but I’ll try and note where our picks are available to watch, if possible. And, if you’re looking for ideas to fill up your own Christmas Special advent calendar, you can check out my Top 25 Animated Holiday Special list, or the results of our Holiday Special Showdown, where 64 animated classics went head-to-head for viewer’s votes in 2017.
Nov. 28: We kicked things off on Thanksgiving with Phineas and Ferb’s Christmas Vacation, a music-filled Disney Channel original now available on Disney+ (Season 2, episode 21). It’s an annual must-see for us.
Nov. 29: Night two was British imports Robbie the Reindeer: Hooves of Fire and Robbie the Reindeer in Legend of the Lost Tribe. The first of these Aardman Animation originals is better than the sequel, but both still air annually on CBS. There’s also a third, UK-only entry, Close Encounters of the Herd Kind, that never made it to the US. Fun Fact: 100% of all 3 specials’ profits go to charity, as they were produced by Comic Relief.
Nov. 30: A Chipmunk Christmas. Though it had several DVD releases, they’re all of out print currently and this 1981 classic, a staple of my childhood, has become distressingly hard to find, even though we, personally, have multiple DVD copies.
Dec. 1: Our first special of December was The Happy Elf. This 2005 Harry Connick-voiced special got little love on its release, but is a family favorite. Rare to find on TV, it’s still widely available via digital or DVD, and worth checking out.
Dec. 2: With Frozen fever rampant, we revisited a lesser known entry in the franchise, 2016′s LEGO Frozen Northern Lights. This clever send-up isn’t specifically Christmas, but it’s snowy and so much fun. And it’s now available, though oddly broken into segments, on Disney+. (The Disney Channel is also showing it in one 30 min package all this month.)
Dec. 3: On this busy school night we needed something short, so I picked Pluto’s Christmas Tree, now on Disney+. Kids had never seen this 1952 animated short, and we all really enjoyed it.
Dec. 4: One of those days we wandered off the beaten path and tried the Opus-led A Wish for Wings that Work from 1991, based on the book and comic strip by Berkeley Breathed. A bit long for littles, but the ending landed, and it was a nice change of pace. Not streaming, but available very cheaply on DVD.
Dec. 5: Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire was my son’s pick. This pilot episode for the 30-year-old series works as the stand alone holiday special it was first conceived as, and can be found on Disney+.
Dec. 6: Ducktales: Last Christmas! This fun, 2018 special can be found on Disney+ (season 2, episode 6 of the rebooted series). We watched it several times last year, and it’s just good as I remember. Timey-wimey fun.
Dec. 7: This 2006 direct-to-DVD release isn’t the classic Looney Tunes of the 1930s-40s, but Looney Tunes: Bah, Humduck (available digitally or DVD) is still a fun Christmas Carol take with Daffy as Scrooge and a fairly faithful adaptation of Dickens’ tale.
Dec. 8: Time for a classic: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, playing this year on Freeform, as well as CBS, and also available in an infinite variety of DVD collections and via iTunes.
Dec. 9: Did you know that Hallmark Channel used to make original animated specials? They did, and they were good, too! 2011′s Hoops and Yoyo Ruin Christmas was our pick last night and it’s smart, and cute, and fun. I miss that Hallmark Channel. Released on DVD, it’s out of print, but copies can still be found, and Amazon offers it for digital purchase.
Dec. 10: As a kid the anticipation of this special’s debut was almost too much to bear for my then, 7-year-old self. 1982′s The Smurf’s Christmas Special was my pick last night, and I vividly recalled how it was a such huge event for me at the time that I danced around the basement during the commercials, too full of excitement to sit. It isn’t streaming, but can be found on the still-available 2011 DVD The Smurf’s Holiday Celebration.
Dec. 11 and 12: Busy evenings the past few, so missed the 11th, but still managed to watch Merry Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda Holiday last night—and I almost managed to stay awake, too. (Both are on Netflix.)
Dec. 13: Duck the Halls: A Mickey Mouse Christmas Special, this charming, under-rated 2016 Disney Channel original is, oddly, NOT available on Disney+, though it can be purchased digitally or watched this month via Disney Channel On Demand. A family favorite since its debut.
Dec. 14: Last night, instead of a traditional animated offering, we had our annual viewing of (mostly) animated British Christmas adverts, which are a very big deal in the UK and, frankly, often more awesome than any 30 minute special. I’ve tweeted a lot about my love for these often tear-jerking mini-movies, but here are what I think are my top 5…5) From Sainsbury’s, 2018′s The Big Night builds to an awesome ending. 4) Sainsbury’s The Greatest Gift (2016) has an original song that’s become a Christmas favorite in our house. 3) John Lewis is the master purveyor of this emotionally manipulative—in the best way—three-minute extravaganzas. Lots to choose from, but 2014′s Monty the Penguin is probably my fave. 2) In 2015, Sainsbury’s delivered the perfect mix of comedy and heart with Mog’s Christmas Calamity. 1) And my fave—a bit of cheat since it’s Canadian—is Cineplex’s Lily and the Snowman. Seen it probably 100 times now, and cried every one. There’s plenty more to explore, from the UK and beyond, and falling down a rabbit hole of these ads on YouTube is an utterly delightful way to spend an evening. To get you started, here’s a compilation of what one YouTube reviewer calls the top 10 Christmas ads of 2019.
Dec. 15: Returned to a classic with 1969′s Frosty the Snowman, which still airs annually on CBS. Happy Birthday!
Dec. 16: Finally watched NBC’s new How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming, available on Hulu.
Dec. 17: My pick, and I chose a Rankin-Bass we hadn’t seen in a while, 1970′s Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town. Unfortunately, forgot how long and slow this one was. My kids were kind of bored.
Dec. 18: Shrek the Halls, which really is laugh-out-loud family fun. For some reason, this is the only Dreamworks special not on Netflix, but does still air annually on ABC.
Dec. 19: I have no clue how Olive the Other Reindeer, this super-charming, Drew Barrymore-voiced special about a dog who mishears a radio bulletin and thinks Santa needs her, didn’t become a classic. It’s not streaming, but is available very inexpensively on DVD and well worth a watch.
Dec. 20: How Murray Saved Christmas, another overlooked gem, this 2014 rhyming special first appeared on NBC, and is airing this season as part of AMC’s Best Christmas Ever. (It’s also available on DVD and digital.)
Dec. 21: As we realize we’re quickly running out of days till Christmas, time to make sure we pack in some classics, like, A Charlie Brown Christmas.
Dec. 22: Santa, Baby! This 2001special featuring Eartha Kitt is the last of the Rankin-Bass originals and it’s…fine. Lots of music and a magical partridge. Not something you see everyday. (Was available on DVD, now out of print, and can sometimes be found on YouTube.)
Dec. 23: Saving the best for (almost) last, the whole family got up this morning and watched Prep & Landing, and its sequel, Prep & Landing: Naughty vs Nice, in our jammies, to kick off Christmas vacation.
Dec. 24: Christmas Eve is always the 1966 version of Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas to remind us all that Christmas doesn't come from a store. Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more.

My Top 25 Games Advent Day 2 - Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales (#24)
“Now, excuse me while I help myself to your souls!”
Tumblr media
I’m a complete and total Final Fantasy novice. Other than this 13 year old obscure DS title, I have played about 40 minutes of FF7 and that’s really it with my Final Fantasy experience. Somehow though, this game struck enough of a chord with me as a child that it ended up tailing this list.
Let’s get the slightly awkward stuff out of the way. I’ll be the first to admit this game is relatively junior. The entire game is populated with barely developed bird characters (which you yourself are also) and odd mini-games based on fairytales, the final boss fight is basically just a game of air hockey and the whole thing from start to finish is played with the DS stylus. Now, that’s probably a recipe for disaster. But despite the odds, and the fact that near enough everyone on the planet either hates this game or has completely forgotten it, I adored it.
Chocobo Tales sees you take control of a nameless chocobo who receives a name of your choosing and lives on the peaceful, slightly generic Chocobo Farm. And then just as you’re settling down for story time with the farm’s caretaker, a variant of Final Fantasy’s black mage shows up in the form of an edgy bookworm named Croma, and what do you know, he’s brought with him an evil soul-sucking book by accident. Now the whole farm is evil or whatever. I’ll be honest with you, the story isn’t particularly why this placed here; it’s kind of confusing, feels arbitrary and most of it centres around these crystals I’m supposed to care about. Aside from the stellar development of one of the game’s central villains Irma, it’s difficult to latch onto and remember clearly. No, what makes this game so excellent and memorable in my mind is the combat system. I absolutely loved it and I’ve never played anything like it since. You spend the entire game collecting cards depicting the various odd mythical creatures that populate the Final Fantasy universe and you use them to partake in fun, unique and oddly comicesque battles throughout the game. Each card has an element (fire etc.) and its own special ability to set it apart, and all the art of the monsters when they’re summoned is cool as heck! They’re like comic drawings!! And I’m still a child!!
Anyway, the way you fight in this game is via the four slots on the card that are at the top, left, right and bottom of the card. If you have a sword in one of these slots that coincides with your enemy’s card slots (e.g. your left slot has a sword and their left slot has nothing in), you land a hit. If there’s a shield in that enemy’s slot instead, no damage is taken and same goes for you. Add on top of that a sleugh of unique spells and abilities for each type of card and you’ve got yourself a genuinely fresh and interesting combat mechanic that makes it feel rewarding and even necessary to traverse the entire world picking every single card in the collection just so you can build the best deck possible. Admittedly, as I mentioned earlier, it all gets thrown away in the final encounter in favour of air hockey, but hey the music is cool and you can’t have everything.
Aside from combat, gameplay largely consists of those fairy tale minigames. You find cute little story books scattered across the world, most of which are mandatory to actually continue with the main story and honestly, they vary in quality. A few are so unabashedly fun I actually found myself coming back to them after it was necessary to do so, but equally, some suck so hard and make literally no sense from a mechanical standpoint that it briefly sucks the fun out of the game. Either way, the game’s commitment to focusing on fairytales as a central theme works brilliantly and really adds to this game’s unique feel. And then the rest of the time, you’re moving through the world via dragging a stylus across the screen and oh wow, they properly studied the Penguin Guide to Making an RPG World, didn’t they? They’ve got all the classics here; grassy starting area, fire bit, water bit, forest bit and (everyone’s favourite) threatening lightning bit. The graphics are absolutely amazing and hold up brilliantly for a 2006 DS game, but this world is so generic it almost hurts. However, of course, it wouldn’t have its signature Final Fantasy charm, nor would it likely have a place on my list if it wasn’t for the soundtrack. This game’s soundtrack is far better than it has any right to be. If you don’t believe me, have a listen to the game’s various overworld themes for each section of the map, or the battle theme that actually slaps or the mega sad song they use in emotional scenes that really does still bring tears (I really do be like that) or, best of all, this game’s version of Battle at the Big Bridge, which I maintain is one of the most awesome tracks to come out of a video game. I mean, it’s all just so GOOD.
Yes, I know I spent the majority of this review roasting the hell out of this game while simultaneously telling you it’s one of my favourites, but what are you gonna do, I think this is the relationship most people have with this game who don’t actively hate it. It’s fun, it’s wacky, collecting the cards and battling with them is downright addictive and it has just enough signature charm to call itself a Final Fantasy title (vaguely speaking), while also containing enough wonkiness to call itself a mid-2000s DS title. I adore it, in a way that I will never play it or talk about it with anyone ever again.
Standout Moment Award: Basically any part of the game that has combat in it qualifies for today’s standout moment award. I’d say the final encounter too for just the soundtrack alone (Battle at the Big Bridge babey), but also because, you know, I actually quite enjoy air hockey.
Standout Character Award: Irma. Sure, none of the characters in this game are exactly nuanced to hell, but something about Irma’s tragic backstory and her eventual redemption arc just did something for me as a kid.
Tomorrow: No. 23; The birth of the most notable video game adaptation of Pinball.

CELESTE: THE THIRTEENTH QUEEN
it was said that on the thirteenth birthday of the thirteenth queen, the stars would align to see a prophecy fulfilled -- for the birth of the girl was the death of the galaxy.
the prophecy reads:
let mars see the moon
and as water touches fire,
let the galaxy end
by the hands of the daughter.
year 1027 of the new world -- the known galaxy. planets have fallen into the hands of war. these titans and giants of the sky have been reduced to ash and rubble at the feet of three warring species: the industrial TEC, the psychic Advent and the alien Vasari.
chaos has broken and turned stars into stardust, civilians into refugees, refugees into pirates and killers and criminals. while good still exists in mercenaries, peace-seekers and walled cities, the universe has undoubtedly been plunged into a war that has been going on for fifteen years -- a war that has only just begun.
HISTORY.
the Mallenia, TEC, Advent and Vasari were the ruling species of the universe. they oversaw the Universal Council and ensured peace across galaxies together.
however, after Celeste was crowned queen of the Mallenia and head of the council on her thirteenth birthday (following her mother, Celina's, abrupt and mysterious death), the Mallenia's corruption was soon exposed. following a failed attempt to takeover Thulniotune (the TEC's home planet), it was revealed that Celeste had bribed many corrupt TEC officials to stage a coup so that the Mallenia could have control of the TEC and their weapons. it was revealed that they would use these weapons to take control of Pandora (the Advent's home planet), then Vinci (the Vasari's home planet), then eventually the universe.
however, one brave TEC official led an underground rebellion not soon after Thulniotune was captured. the TEC have always been known to be a violent species inclined to war, so their reaction was nothing short of expected. this rebellion launched an aggressive counter attack -- effectively destroying Megnilia (the Mallenia's home planet).
this broke the treaties that were in place at the time, and effectively started the war of the empires.
the queen Celeste was forced into hiding, and the few surviving Mallenia scattered across the galaxy -- sought by bounty hunters and revengers who had been waiting to see the empire fall.
Thulniotune was reclaimed by the TEC (the Mallenia stationed on the planet massacred ruthlessly.) the Vasari sided with the Mallenia, launching an attack on Thulniotune. while the Advent (predictors of the prophecy, who had seen it fulfilled) remained neutral and worked on protecting their planet, the TEC soon attacked them, as well.
and so, the war was born. and so the hatred between the TEC, the Vasari and the Advent grew and grew and grew -- until what little understanding existed between the species disappeared. diplomacy abandoned, and the origins of war now just an excuse for an arms race.
INFORMATION.
MALLENIA
the Mallenia are an incredibly intelligent and beautiful species. they are  humanoid, with two legs, two arms and a body and face structure very similar to earth's humans. their industry is concentrated on science and medicine, which is why natural births are no longer common among them. they have their own language, known as Melig. names typically have profound and elaborate explanations and meanings, and are usually shortened into nicknames such as: appetence (appie), quatervois (vois), magoa (mags), novaturient (nova), etc.
physical appearance and other attributes. an average mallenia stands at seven feet. those who have seen them describe their looks as fairy- or even god-like. their skin, similar to the shade and variety of earth-humans' skin, even appears to sparkle in the light. because most mallenia offspring are created in laboratories and spliced with healthier genes, they are highly resistant to illness and even heal relatively quick. they are typically beautiful, well-spoken and charming -- difficult to miss in a crowd (a quality that is no longer helpful now that the very few existing Mallenia are being hunted across the galaxy.)
Mellegnia. they originate from the planet Mellegnia, which was about 23 times bigger than earth, with a gravity that was about 8 times that of earth. a single day on Mellegnia lasted 20 hours, and a year lasted 330 days. the planet was made up of 2 continents, which made up 62% of the planet's landmass. 3 moons orbited the planet and Mellegnia itself orbited a yellow sun in an elliptic orbit.
Mellegnia was destroyed by the TEC. only a handful of Mallenia exist today and, because they are in hiding, they are incredibly difficult to find. an average mallenia, in good condition, can be sold on the black market for (in earth's terms) a couple million dollars. however, even dead mallenia can be tagged with a good price.
TEC
the TEC come from the planet Thulniotune named so for the planet's properties, is an ice giant planet in a small solar system with ten other planets. it is about 27.1 times bigger than aarth and its gravity is about 5.88 times that of earth. a single day lasts 45 hours and a year lasts 431 days. the planet is made up of 11 continents, which make up 54% of its landmass. 3 moon(s) orbit the planet and Thulniotune itself orbits a yellow sun in a fairly circular orbit.
physical appearance and other attributes. an average TEC stands at five to six feet. they are even more human-like than the mallenia, but wear very distinctive clothing and have very distinctive markings all over their bodies (that are said to resemble circuitry and wiring.) (think, al bhed from final fantasy.)
they are the most technologically advanced species, overtaking the mallenia in revenue and ability years ago. their industry is also arguably the biggest in the universe; they typically deal in weapons, energy, electricity, among others. many planets depend on the TEC for energy. the TEC are notorious for being quite an aggressive and violent people. they are typically quiet and talk in the form of short phrases, only saying what is necessary. they have their own language known as technician.
all efforts of the TEC today are going into the war. service in the military has become mandatory for all TEC citizens of legal age. names are typically three-five letters long and include many l’s, r’s and b’s (eg. ric, tel, lina, nara.)
ADVENT
the Advent come from the planet Pandora, named so by its discoverer. it is a diamond planet in a densely populated solar system with twenty-one other planets. Pandora is about 21.4 times bigger than earth and its gravity is about 10.92 times that of earth. a single day lasts 44.71 hours and a year lasts 165 days. the planet is made up of 15 continents, which make up 58% of the planet's landmass. 1 moon orbits the planet and Pandora itself orbits a yellow sun in a slightly elliptic orbit.
pandora offers a unique sight in the night sky of nearby planets. its colors and distance to the planets around it occasionally makes the night quite magical on those planets, especially those with an atmosphere.
physical appearance and other attributes. the advent are known to be very spiritual people, milling out prophecies and predictions daily. though the advent credit their abilities to the skies, science is yet to explain the advent's powers of compulsion and prediction -- so for now, they have decided to call the advent, psychic.
an average advent stands at six to eight feet. they are described to be humanoid but with skin and hair that are either green, blue, orange or  white in color. their eyes are wide, white and glow in the night. their garments typically consist of white hooded cloaks.
though they tried to stay neutral when the war broke out, they were attacked by the TEC and effectively joined the war. their defenses are impressive and they are well-known for their walled cities.
VASARI
the vasari come from the planet Vinci, as it's called by most of the natives. it is an earth-like planet in a huge solar system filled with fourteen other planets. Vinci is about 12.9 times bigger than earth and its gravity is about 7.67 times that of earth. a single day lasts 39.66 hours and a year lasts 142 days. The planet is made up of 12 continents, which make up 39% of its landmass. 1 moon orbits the planet and Vinci itself orbits a blue sun in a circular orbit.
the vasari's planet is central to their evolution and current-day appearance and abilities. vinci is one of the most complex collection of ecosystems in the known galaxy, which has made scholar-tourism one of the main sources of income of its people.
more about vinci. the plant-like organisms on vinci are almost all huge, towering trees, high above a layer of various shrubs, grasses and flowers. the trees can and often will completely block out light, which sometimes leads to a fairly empty ground layer, full of dead leaves. the aquatic organisms aren't very large in numbers, but they are huge in size. They can grow to sizes of nearly 100 meters (328ft) and a diameter of up to 5 meters (16ft). these underwater giants give this aquatic world an eerie atmosphere as you never know what could lurk behind that pillar. but at the same time, they provide homes to thousands of species on all depths, which makes studying even 1 giant coral an absolute delight.
vinci has an abundance of life in all shapes and sizes. birds, reptiles, insects, fish, mammals, you name it. there are even a few dozen sentient species, most of them either reptilian or amphibian. however, the most remarkable species is only barely sentient. but it's not their sentience that makes them interesting. these large mammals have bark-like skin, comparable to the skin of an elephant but with the texture of a dragon's scale. these mammals are slow and docile, which they can afford to be with such armor, but their gentle nature causes moss, plants and other small organisms to grow on their skin. some individuals look more like walking trees than a member of their own species and it has lead to unique micro-ecosystems.
however, vinci's supply of natural resources is also one of the most inconsistent. in the early days, there existed two species on vinci -- one more violent than the other. they warred for nutrients and resources for hundreds of years. the vasari today is the species that emerged victorious.
physical appearance and other attributes. the vasari appear very alien -- with an exoskeleton for skin that is harder than metal. their eyes are typically yellow or black. they stand at an average of ten feet, and have sharp teeth. their clothing typically consists of armor made from the plants and animals from their home planet.
besides scholar tourism, importing and exporting materials made from the plants and animals on vinci is another main source of income for the vasari.
