ONE DAY IN OCTOBER - Part II
A MATT CASEY X HALSTEAD!OFC FIC (Charlotte Halstead Casey)
A/N: Part two is here, and it’s slowly but steadily getting more and more exciting! 🔥 Please read & review what you think. This is set in s7 btw. PART I
Charlotte nodded absentmindedly as she walked over to her locker and opened it up. “Yeah that’s a good idea, but I might go home and sleep.”
“It’s been a while since the two of you have had one on one time together,” stated Will as he slouched against the cool metal furniture, his brown eyes watching as his sister shoved her pale pink stethoscope away and fumbled around in her handbag. “You could always nap there, it’s past morning now so he’ll be home like always.”
Turning to face Will, Charlotte hummed indecisively. Her brother did make a good point. She could easily nap at their dad’s new apartment and catch up with him still. “You make a good point.”
“Well, I’ve been known to have good ideas, Tater,” laughed Will as he moved to help his sister into her jacket.
Charlotte narrowed her eyes at his reply and giggled loudly at it. “Was Veronica Maguire in high school one of those good ideas, Billy?” she returned, smiling cheekily.
“Ok, that was one of my bad ideas,” stated Will as he remembered back to his high school prom. Veronica’s father had chased him for what felt like half of Canaryville, all because she and Will had made out that night. “But usually I’m a fountain of good ideas!”
Charlotte couldn’t help the snort that slipped out, and it caused both Halstead siblings to laugh hard. “Well, aside from Veronica and some other questionable ideas I’ve seen from you, I’ll agree that seeing Pop is a better one. I can make sure he’s doing well, and his meds are working for him still.”
“He’s a stubborn old guy, but he’s not stupid,” said Will as he locked up Charlotte’s locker for her and began to walk with her out of the room.
“If you say so,” replied Charlotte as she pulled her handbag higher up on her shoulder. “Like Mom used to say, we’ve all got that well-meaning Halstead spunk that makes us do stupid things.”
The two siblings laughed again at their Mom’s old joke. Charlotte knew she was lucky to have such a close bond with not only Will, but Jay also, and especially after they had lost their mother.
“Mom would kick his ass if he didn’t take his meds, probably will do so from heaven.”
“Damn right.”
It didn’t take long for Charlotte to leave Med, saying goodbye to Will in her dark blue SUV. He had made sure to walk there, even though he did not need to.
The two had decided that if Charlotte was going to go visit their dad, that she should pick up his prescriptions and some healthy food. Pat Halstead was a great connoisseur of all things fatty and greasy, which, after a quadruple bypass, wasn’t the best choice at all. Luckily, there were both stores on the way to the new apartment.
She had left Will at Med just after half nine, and after sending a quick text to Matt saying she had just left and for him to stay safe, Charlotte had happily arrived home and promptly fell asleep.
This pregnancy was definitely taking more and more out of her, especially if she didn’t keep moving or occupied. But Charlotte knew she wouldn’t have it any other way, both her and Matt wanted nothing more than their own baby, and this little one inside her was so wanted and cherished already.
Charlotte had never seen her dad cry other than when her mom had died and when she had married Matt, but Pat had teared up when she had told him he was going to be grandpa. He had already been helping Matt put together ideas for the nursery, the two bonding over their love of carpentry, woodworking and construction.
Standing in the doorway of the pastel green nursery after waking from her nap, Charlotte smiled at the painted white rocking chair next to the window. Even with a serious heart condition and waiting for his surgery, her dad had determinedly made the chair for his future grandchild’s first room. It was beautiful and she had definitely cried a ton.
Sighing, Charlotte decided to go take a quick shower and then head out to see her dad. Like Will had said, their dad had a routine and would be home now, most likely watching a baseball game on the television.
The sun was still shining as Charlotte drove through the streets of Chicago, and it just seemed like a good day to her.
It had been a quick effort to pick up some healthy foods for her dad, including some homemade low-cholesterol ready meals that she had found in the food store. The pharmacy had taken a little while longer, but Charlotte didn’t mind, and she had made sure to pick up a new oxygen tank with a mask for her dad. Luckily, he wouldn’t need to use it. But it was always good to have if the need appeared out of nowhere.
Even the loving text and sweet voicemail that Matt had left while she was asleep had made her mood even more irreversibly chipper, but her husband always had that effect on her. It just felt like one of those days where nothing could or would go wrong and Charlotte was happily relishing in it as she sang along to Taylor Swift in the car.
When she did finally arrive at the new high rise apartment building, Charlotte made sure to find a parking spot around the back. It was usually used only by the building’s occupants, but her dad had given her his permission badge to display it in her own car. He didn’t want her walking too far nowadays at six months pregnant.
Charlotte had just opened the trunk of her car and was bringing out the groceries and pharmacy bags, when she felt someone appear at her side and her green eyes quickly darted to her right-hand side and to the figure who stood there. Gasping, Charlotte placed a hand on her chest.
“Mrs Aquino, goodness you scared me there!” exclaimed Charlotte softly as she quickly smiled at the older woman. Her husband, Mr. Aquino, or Bert as he liked to be called, had been a friend of her dad’s since he had moved in, and Charlotte always made sure to be polite to the couple. It wasn’t hard, they were lovely.
Mrs. Aquino waved her hand dismissively. “My apologies dear, I just saw you on your own and had to come help!” she replied sweetly, moving to take two of the bags from her, leaving Charlotte with two also. “I still haven’t met that lovely husband of yours yet, we keep seeming to miss each other.”
“Yeah, Matt doesn’t have normal shifts at the firehouse,” replied Charlotte as she and Mrs. Aquino moved to walk into the building lobby. “That and his construction company keeps him busy, but I know he’d love to meet you too.”
Mrs. Aquino nodded as she pressed the elevator button. “He sounds like a good man, and that is all you can ask for nowadays,” stated the elder woman, glancing up at Charlotte with a wise look in her eyes. “I’m sure he’ll be a great father to your little one.”
“That I know,” replied Charlotte, unable to keep the broad smile off her face at the mention of her husband as a father. She and everyone around knew Matt Casey was perfect fatherhood material and would excel at it. “This little one is very lucky to have him.”
Luckily, there were not many people getting on the elevator today, and Charlotte didn’t have much time to talk to Mrs. Aquino as they approached the twentieth floor, where she lived. Promising to keep in touch, they had said goodbye, and Charlotte had kept herself in the elevator until it reached the twenty-third floor, where her father’s new apartment was.
Coughing slightly, she stepped out onto the soft carpet and made her way down the corridor to apartment 23C, the home of one Patrick Joseph Halstead. The door was unlocked when Charlotte went to open it as she knocked, which was unsurprising.
“Pop?” called Charlotte out into the apartment as she closed the door behind her. “It’s me, Charlotte.”
Pat Halstead’s head popped out of the kitchen doorway, and he smiled ever so slightly before making his way over to his daughter as he gave her a one-armed hug. She was the only one he ever really smiled at or showed affection to nowadays, since his wife and her mom had died.
“What are you doing here, Charlie Bear?” asked a surprised Pat Halstead, using his own nickname for his only daughter.
Charlotte rolled her eyes at her dad’s comment. “What do you think?” she replied, chuckling slightly, motioning to the bags on the ground. “Here to spend some time with my old man!”
Pat grumbled. “I don’t need you taking care of me girl, you have enough to do,” he told Charlotte, but he quickly took the bags from her. “I bet that idiot bellhop downstairs didn’t help you with the bags?”
“Pop, he’s a receptionist, not a bellhop,” sighed Charlotte as she followed her father into his kitchen. He had the window open, and there was a great view of Chicago from where Charlotte found herself among the white tiles and gray walls.
Pat waved his hand in the air. “Bullshit, you’re pregnant, and he didn’t help. What kind of man doesn’t help a pregnant woman?”
“I parked around behind, so I didn’t see him and Mrs. Aquino took some until we got to the elevator,” replied Charlotte as she pulled out one of the kitchen table’s chairs and sat down. “Oh, apparently Bert wants to know if you’re going to poker night next week by the way.”
Pat nodded as he sorted through the bags, huffing whenever Charlotte tried to get up and help. “I’ll call him later, Ronnie won big time last time,” he said, looking back at her.
“That’s good, how is Ronnie?” asked Charlotte. She had met Ronnie a few times now, and he was a nice guy. Her dad seemed to look out for him as he was in a wheelchair after a wartime injury.
“Doing well, got into a new VA group yesterday morning.”
“That’s great news,” said Charlotte happily, her eyes alight with genuine joy for the veteran. “We could go see him with some lunch. I brought bagels and soup with more than enough for us both.”
Pat agreed before going silent as he opened up the pharmacy bag.
“You can go on ahead, I’m just going to find somewhere to shove this blasted thing,” he grumbled, pointing at the new oxygen tank.
“Hey, don’t attack it, you never know when you might need it,” replied Charlotte seriously.
“I’m fine. It’s just heart surgery that I’ve had, and you four kids keep treating me like I’m some sort of cripple!” retorted Pat as he walked out of the room, leaving Charlotte alone with her thoughts.
After a while, Charlotte decided to go up to see Ronnie herself as she knew her dad would eventually make his way up to the twenty-fifth floor apartment.
Leaving Pat to watch yet another baseball game, she smiled and made her way to the elevator for the second time that day, and pressed a painted nail against the little button to open it up.
However, it was as she stood there waiting, that Charlotte noticed that the elevator didn’t seem to be working all of a sudden and she harrumphed loudly. Now she was going to have to walk up two floors of stairs while six months pregnant and then two back down to her dad’s apartment.
She just hoped that it would be working again later, the thought of walking twenty-three floors of stairs down to the bottom made Charlotte want to burst into tears.
Undeterred, the youngest Halstead continued on her way and pushed open the door to the south stairway. It was only then that she smelled a scent that was oddly familiar, as if someone had burned a roast or something similar. Shaking her head, Charlotte started to climb the way up to the top floor.
It was probably nothing.

HEAD HEART HANDS: “TURNING A NEW PAGE”
Charlotte is hardwired for realism. It’s a hefty task, given the present company and the dubious physics that have kept them all alive for the past few years, but if a resume could receive an A+, her feats in risk assessment and time-sensitive innovation deserved it. Charlotte would know; she installed the updates herself. Still, with the leader of their trio absent and Jasper dealing with impossibilities on the side, the biggest challenge these days is seeing eye-to-eye.
[ Jasper and Charlotte discuss Henry’s leave of absence, as well as his radio silence. ]
The mythology of Greek craftsman, inventor, and architect Daedalus has been cited by a variety of sources, including Homer, Pliny the Elder (Pliny’s Natural History, AD 77-79), and Plato, the latter of which interpreted his inventory and intellect as a parallel for the pursuit of truth. Pliny credited him with the invention of carpentry, as well as ship sails and masts, in addition to sculptures so lifelike they may as well have been animated; his genius was so evident that life was born into the wood. The most famous of his feats, however, was the tale of wings constructed out of wax, and the fall of his son, Icarus, into the sea.
It’s one thing to live in pursuit of knowledge. It’s not like that’s a bad thing, per se. Plenty of people do, and are perfectly content people with no lingering emotional or psychological hangups. That being said, the itch of knowing and the object of doing are not the same. For doctors who treat the sick in the morning and the engineers who study maths to reach the moon, knowledge alone is poor sustenance. For years—too early—invention has been a means of civic duty. She is too clever to fall into the sea unplanned, but she’s not heartless. She’ll make them wings, and a parachute. She left Harvard and the future she’d made for herself to follow the people she loved. Love—to the point of modification. To the point of invention.

AB Finishes was first conceptualized in January of 2022 when a new vendor, Unified Door & Hardware Group sought out Classic Construction & Restoration, Inc. for a niche "finish carpentry" installation need. Classic did not have the time, bandwidth, or necessary overhead budget to manage these niche projects profitably and declined the project. But Classic's COO Brandy Painter saw the potential in this new niche market and reached out to the Vendor's Account Manager to pitch "hiring her and her new company" for their door & trim installation project. AB Finishes was founded February 15th, 2022 and had accepted their first project with UDH by the end of the month. Since the initial approach by UDH, AB Finishes has been asked to provide over 30 bids and been recommended by our founding vendor partner to a number of his counterparts at both UDH and its various sister companies. We have completed four projects, are under way on three projects, and are contracted for an additional three projects slated to start later in the year. What we do: AB Finishes is a full-service General Contractor. We have the capability and resources necessary to handle any trade we are asked to provide a bid on but consider ourselves "finish carpentry" specialists. We have primarily been asked to bid "trim carpentry" but were recently asked to provide a quote to be the "Punch Contractor" who finishes the various trades' incomplete punch list items. We've worked in Commercial Office spaces, Multi-family residential (5 floors or less) spaces, Townhomes, & multi-family residential high rises. AB Finishes is receiving good reviews from Site Management due to our hands-on approach to project management. Our approach is to always make the customers feel that we are there for them in all stages of the project by providing a caring Project Manager who will be with the project from start to completion. This personal touch is what we are marketing for and what we believe has made our current and previous projects successful. AB Finishes is currently working to perfect our "management style" by having a female contracted consultant on site who is providing support, guiding the installation efforts, and liaising with the project superintendents and foremen at their current project locations. AB Finishes is very excited to be making this move into what is a primarily male driven landscape. Things to look forward to in 2025: Brandy Painter and her consulting team are working diligently towards building a future in the finish carpentry niche market as a Woman Owned & Managed Business by:
Continuing to provide "Hands On" services.
Continuing to provide detailed project timelines that are updated continuously with project photos throughout the project documenting Before, During, and After conditions.
Continuing to hire & partner with quality crews that have a similar work ethic and eye for detail.
Fostering workplace safety through training, certifications, providing quality PPE, and practicing daily safety diligence.

There are a few more people that are problem and they're running around doing things that are stupid here in Charlotte county one of them is Mike goodhue he is a menace and he goes around as a cracking in his character Paul Blanchard quite often and the character from UMass and the one from the January 6th committee is getting arrested as all of them says it doesn't care so it's time for him to leave and we worked it up that he has tried to hit our son 50 times a day for two weeks in a row now and we started ramping up the hits on him and we heard from our son and we start hitting him for real and very hard and the guy is now a fanatic for it and he's stupid so getting rid of his people as is going on and taking them down and finally he says I'm trying to pretend I'm his kid and you are killing me. And her son says of course and what are you f****** deaf. So you want to do what you did to Trump which isn't that much you just ruined him and lost everything and he started laughing and he said yeah I guess so he said it won't work at all his slaughtering you like cattle and I guess you think you can do it all yourself cuz that's what's going to happen. And he started plabbing and said we heard people who say that instead of having you kill for what you're doing. So you stops and says if you're I'm having you killed now for what you're saying it's very fast. Just say no such a s*** so he drove him off the road so can you figure it out you little s***. All sudden he says this is what I'm doing like all day long I said no it's been half the time dying from it he goes gosh that sounds stupid so he's still trying and we're hitting him he got up today and said I have to hurt him and all this stuff and we said we're going to hurt you stupid assholes for that son's secret crap alone and all your attempts our son and daughter say to hit them with what they're trying to let them know we understand. We're just going to kill you again Jesus Christ are you stupid. So are slaughtering them and then the f** starts talking and we tell him we're just going to kill you again every single time and two idiots just keep coming back and get killed and they're dying okay fully brain damage the body's getting mutilated and they won't shut up and they won't stop doing their s*** and people just leave them here so take it over and we're doing the bank scenario and I'm going to use them and we're going to use them because people insist on sitting them on us and we're going to take over your entire monetary system and enforce it and we're going to destroy military groups and you see them go up all the time pretty soon the max will be separated and we will annihilate them cuz they don't have the range your fleet's going to get nailed and we're going to false flag it and completely butcher them sale right through their fleet and crush it.
So Mac Daddy was drilling the stone and Matt and he said the stone that Tommy f makes you can drill with this and this Stone does not drill. But that's your computer people you say and we say good and we told you who built it and people are looking for signs of his carpentry and you know what year it was built roughly and what methods and they had certain saws and tools and said it's fine craftsmanship. And they look at the castle in Bavaria and some people say they see some stuff and sticks his thumb on everything and I'm trying to get Prints. And they fight each other over it.
Thor Freya
His other habits when he's doing work on wood he likes to smooth it with his hand to see what the surface is like but that's not what they can find he likes to see a nice cut and if it's not nice sit there and works it and he does certain patterns and certain instructions with certain tools like golf he hits it and it goes off to the right mostly and they're seeking that same with Hera but mostly Ken is the one who knows about it

6 Tricks To Painting Your House Quicker And Better
Painting your home is one of those chores that just never seems to get done. It's a big job, takes a lot of time, and you always feel like you're behind schedule. So I've come up with 6 tricks that can help any homeowner paint faster and better!
Get everything ready the night before
The night before you paint, make sure to get everything ready. Prepare the area by removing all furniture and other items that need moved. Clean off any dust or dirt from surfaces and make sure they are dry before putting anything back in place. Get all your tools together, including brushes and rollers if you're going to use them (don't forget about drop cloths). Make sure all cans of paint are open, labeled with their color name/number if possible, and ready for use when needed during painting day.
Dont forget your safety gear
Wear a mask and gloves.
Wear eye protection.
Wear long sleeves, closed toe shoes, and pants that cover your ankles to protect against splatters and spills.
Paint primer and caulk first
Primer: Paint primer is important because it helps the paint stick better to the surface of your home. If you don't use primer, the paint will bubble and peel off over time.
Caulk: Caulk can also be used to seal around doors and windows so that water doesn't get in between them as well as around electrical outlets, switches and plugs to keep moisture out of those places too! You can also use caulk on baseboards so that no one sees any gaps where they meet up with walls or floors.
Mix paint thoroughly
Mixing your paint thoroughly is one of the most important steps in making sure you get a good result. The best way to do this is with a paint mixer, but if you don't have one, stir for at least two minutes. You can also use a paint paddle or pad; just be sure to mix well before adding more paint.
When mixing colors together, it's often helpful to mix them separately first so that they're fully blended and ready when they go into your main container of mixed paint.
Use a roller for smooth finishes
If you're painting a large wall and want a smooth finish, use a roller. For small areas or detailed work, use a paintbrush. If you're painting an entire room with one color that has no detail (like white), then it doesn't matter what tool you use; just make sure to apply even strokes and avoid going over the same area twice in order to prevent brush marks from showing up on your finished product!
Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next one.
Use a hair dryer to speed up the drying process, especially if you're using oil-based paint. By blasting it with hot air from all sides, you can speed up the drying process by hours (or even days).
If you want even more speed and efficiency, try using a fan instead of your hair dryer--it'll blow hot air into every corner of your room and make sure everything dries evenly! Or if that's too much effort for you, there's always running an electric dehumidifier 24/7 for several days straight...

These wall treatments also come in a variety of patterns so you can tailor your options to fit your aesthetic — you could even get it in marble for a luxe touch or rustic brick. Best bit is, they emulate the look without the need for extra maintenance!
Interior Firm: Tid Plus Design
2. Graphic tile installations… where you least expect them
Mainly used in the kitchen as the backsplash or a mini accent wall, the graphic tile is not what one would call a novel design solution. However, it still has the potential to be a game changer if you place them in unexpected areas of the home such as the entryway or have it wrap-around your dining area.
Interior Firm: Charlotte's Carpentry
And hey, if these tiles can withstand the heat and humidity in your kitchen, it can certainly withstand the dirt and scuffing when you enter or walk on them. Plus, they’re quite easy to care for too!
Interior Firm: The Local INN.terior
3. Be intricate with wall panels
Add additional texture to your space with wall panels! These designs don’t even require a large amount of space, so it even works in small homes. Vertical wall panels not only imbue a sense of rustic air but are great for concealing private spaces. You can even wainscot if a full-height is too much.
Interior Firm: Space Atelier
The picture frame mould will (undoubtedly) make you recollect Victorian-themed homes but that’s not to say you can’t incorporate them into more clean-cut, contemporary apartments. Just paint them a neutral shade to pull off the look.
Interior Firm: D Initial Concept
4. Throw a curveball with archways
While some homeowners overseas are looking to remove their archways in their sprawling homes, we’re tired of looking at rectangular doorways and seeking to reinvent them with the arch.
Interior Firm: Mr Shopper Studio
Have them blend in with paint or have them stand out by implementing curved edges for a vintage feel or add decorative touches such as framing or moulding.
Interior Firm: Ciseern
5. A pop of colour — the bolder, the better
White may be ubiquitous but lately there’s been an upswing in integrating colours. From pretty pink homes to blue apartments, hues are making waves in the industry. Still, it doesn’t hurt to try even bolder hues for a brighter statement.
Interior Firm: Kome Interior
It's an effective way to switch moods too – red in the dining area can whet appetites and green in the study can optimise concentration.
Interior Firm: Fuse Concept
6. Outfit with conversation starter furnishings
Styling and furnishings play an important part: Though it’s often overlooked, the right accessories and décor sells the interior as a whole. Think pinterest-worthy décor set against a pastel backdrop of an eclectic home.
Interior Firm: i Chapter
Or brass elements and time-worn pieces in contrasting shapes for contemporary homes.

Functionalism’s Influence on the World of Design
A multi-functional room in Zen design. Project by: The Minimalist Society
You may or may not have heard of Functionalism, the movement that swept through the world of art and design in the 20th century and left an indelible mark on the products and spaces we interact with.
If you’ve ever picked up an iPhone or stood in front of a steel skyscraper you have already been touched by Functionalism’s connection to almost everything that we see and use.
Functionalism as a design aesthetic is one of the most important movements of the modern world.
Louis Sullivan, the American architect and one of the pioneers of modern architectural design expressed the Functionalist creed in the now famous maxim "form follows function" and David Gelernter spoke of "machine beauty" in describing a computer program that accomplishes great purpose with small means.
Adolf Loos, the Austrian architect called architectural ornament “a crime” and Frank Lloyd Wright applied Functionalist principles to the Guggenheim Museum with a spiral shape, allowing visitors to easily view the artwork inside.

Functionalism marks a very clear break from "pure art" which is produced with the sole purpose of providing aesthetic experiences.
In architecture as well as industrial and interior design, objects are created with the primary intention of satisfying practical function or utility. This consideration of usefulness and how it relates to beauty gave birth to one of the most influential cultural and artistic movements of the early twentieth century.

A modern but timeless tradition
Although largely regarded as a modern phenomenon, Functionalism is firmly rooted in history as well as a naturally intuitive way of viewing the spaces and objects we interact with.
In Xenophon's Symposium, Critoboulus expresses his Functionalist ideas and in the early Middle Ages, military architecture reflected Functionalist doctrines.
Functionalism reached its height in the period of Classical Modernity, establishing itself as the dominant architectural style from the end of the Second World War up until the end of the seventies.
Refusing to incorporate an emotional dynamic, Functionalist designs are usually linear, realist and free of pointless complexity.
A minimalist yet functional approach. Project by: Icon Interior
They often feature geometric shapes and right angles with complex structures organized into smaller units which are then duplicated. The aim is a clarity and balance which some might find cold.

Bauhaus
The history of Functionalism is closely tied to the Bauhaus school, a center that embodied the idea that “form follows function” and played a role in creating the modern design industry as we know it.
Established in Dessau, Germany in 1919 by Walter Gropius and a group of artists and architects focused on the development of high-quality, utilitarian mass-produced consumer goods, the school’s program uniquely featured the melding of industrial production methods with handicraft.

When the school was closed by Hitler for being “un-German” and its teachers emigrated, the Bauhaus teaching methods and style spread throughout the United States as well as Europe.
Functionalism in design
The discipline of product design embraced Functionalism at the Ulm School of Design (HfG Ulm) in Germany, most popularly seen in the work of Braun’s Head Designer, Dieter Rams.
Functionalism was consistently implemented by the Braun brand in the products that they developed.
Dieter Rams who stated that good design should be “unobtrusive”, also influenced Johnathan Ive, chief design officer at Apple.

When it comes to interior design, a Functionalist approach focuses only on the necessary or important.
The purpose is to create spaces that are efficient, with the design of a space being determined by its primary function. The use of the space directs the floor plan, layout and furniture. For interior designers, a Functionalist approach also removes wastage of space, materials and cost.
Creating spaces that stem from function can greatly increase the value of a space, making it easy to build future extensions and adapt around a timeless base. This is particularly ideal when it comes to the design of commercial spaces as well as home design.

Oriental Functionalism
The tension between modernism and traditionalism in design can be felt in many of Japan’s spaces.
Tadeo Ando (an architect whose concrete buildings are influenced by the Bauhaus style) displays a successful synthesis between these two seemingly contradictory values by reflecting traditional Japanese sensibilities regarding nature.

Indeed, Functionalism as well as minimalism and simplicity are cornerstones of Japanese design. The philosophy of Functionalism can be seen at work in other Asian countries as well.
Singapore interior design as well as the nation’s roads, airports and architecture follow from the functionalist identity inherent in the policies developed by Lee Kuan Yew who built the nation on the foundation of efficiency and usefulness with Functionalism deeply ingrained in the Singaporean psyche.
Singapore city view. Photo Source: Pixabay
Lee was almost obsessive over functionality and implemented it in everything from deciding which tree would provide the best shade to planning the city-state’s foreign policy.
Feng Shui Functionalism can be seen in Pearl Bank Apartments which are among the last of the “old” buildings of Singapore.

The apartments were completed in 1976 and are among the early high-rise, high-density buildings here. They also played a part in influencing urban development in the country.

I actually do have a question about writing a trans character! To what end should I mention the fact that a character is trans even if they’re a side character? I understand that it’s a big part of their identity, but I don’t want to make it the only part of their identity, if you get what I’m saying
I want to write more trans and nonbinary characters but as a cis person I don’t really know how to go about it in a respectful and realistic way
It really depends!! To start with, What Not To Do:
Don’t have a cis character out the trans character and narratively frame it as anything other than bad. Cis people will often overshare about trans people’s identities, even when (jfc ESPECIALLY when) its not remotely relevant. Cis people will say shit like “Oh my friend Matt, who used to be named Charlotte back when he was a she, ya know ;) is also super into carpentry” and i cannot remotely explain how completely bad that is to do.
Now, you CAN use this narratively as a way to out a trans character, but it should reflect extremely poorly on the person doing the outting and make anyone who cares about trans people uncomfortable. To start with, a trans person’s deadname should be assumed to be extremely private. This is like the equivalent of telling someone how many STIs your friend got to a complete stranger without consent. Its humiliating and violating. If you go this route, which is efficient in both characterization and exposition, you should make a clear effort to communicate that it’s wrong somehow.
Other ways though! If a character is stealth (meaning they completely pass for their gender and aren’t openly trans) its unlikely to ever come up with them just being a side character. For other trans folks though, it should be pretty easy to communicate. For trans people who haven’t gone through any form of transition beyond social, it should be pretty obvious tbh that they’re trans between the pronouns and the appearance. Some trans folks pass completely well without transitioning, but most of us don’t. A lot don’t particularly care though! It could honestly go something like
“Abigale guided me to the woman, the one with the short hair.
‘This is Travis’ she said. ‘He’s an old friend of mine.’
Oh! The man with the short hair, then. Though that now included far more than it excluded.”
Though I’m sure this would make a lot of trans people uncomfortable, I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t bother me if Travis was then properly gendered throughout the story.
You can also have trans people talk about a funny story like their breastform or packer falling out. Maybe someone’s gotta help someone out of a binder. Sometimes trans people who don’t pass get misgendered in public, I certainly do. You can also have them walk into a scene exasperated like “I’m fucking sick of cis people.” And then maybe they elaborate, maybe they say they dont really want to talk about it. Either way its a pretty clear indication that they’re trans.
There’s also visible scars from surgery, if your trans character went that route. Phalloplasty graft site scars can be pretty obvious if theyre from the forearm, and top surgery scars can also be really obvious, especially when they’re fresh.
TL;DR: there are a lot of subtle ways to tell an audience that a character is trans. Mention one or two in a scene or two, and it’ll come across.

Chapter 5
CW: detailed description of intense stab wound pain (to the arm), fighting for their lives against giant spider, it as a pronoun in a very brief flashback, blood, powering through pain,
Sahars blood thrummed in his ears like drums heralding disaster.
Adrenalin spiked blood rushed through his veins.
His muscles twitched.
Every fiber of his being buzzed electric.
With feet barely connecting to the soft forest ground, Sahar felt trapped in the worst kind of flight.
The kind that had driven him through dark alleyways, reduced to prey running from its predators in a cage the size of a city.
He’d sworn to never forget the lesson he’d learned, back then. When the little boy he’d saved had ratted him out and sicked a seething horde of citizens onto him.
It had been a warm night back then, too. Like and unlike today in so many ways.
Only that today, he knew how to fight. To defend himself. He was no longer a scrawny eight year old, trying to save a neighborhood kid from some angry teens, mouth running a mile a minute, words tumbling from his tongue, trying to sooth, to deascalet. But words hadn’t been enough, between them and their rage against a world that had banished them behind fences, trapped them in Berlin's slum. Words had done nothing against their butterfly knife. And it had sunk into his arm as they stabbed him, sliced through skin and muscle and planted a searing pain under his skin. His mutation had gone off, outside the safety of his mothers apartment and for all the world to see. What had followed, had been pure terror.
That night had never stopped breathing down his neck, lurking around dark street corners or whispering from beyond his locked bedroom door.
Get it! I saw it dive behind a dumpster! Up the street, the little pest ran into the carpentry. Fuck, fuck we lost it. No wait! There, there it is. It jumped into the river! Then let it drown. Or drift outside the city. It’ll die there anyway.
Haunted, wide eyes flitted over the trees, nearly expecting a hate and fire spewing crowd to break out from between them at any moment.
Bitter fire taste burned on his tongue.
Sahars foot caught on a branch and he slammed into a flower stem. Hard enough to jostle him out of his vicious memory storm.
A painful dull throb pulsed through his shoulder. Nothing compared to a knife buried in his right arm, but enough to let his consciousness snap back into the here and now. Back into his shuddering body. Back between giant leaves and flower petals that rustled in the warm evening breeze.
Sucking in a shaking breath, Sahar felt the axe’s weight in his hand. Heavy as the burden of his conscience. His panic subsided, morphed into something akin to stubborn righteousness.
No.
No matter what had happened back then, he’d done the right thing in saving that boy. And he would do the right thing now!
Even if it meant the whole village would find out. Even if Charlotte would hate him.
He wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he turned his back on them. If he’d let them die while he hid like a coward.
Not if he could do anything about it.
“You you you can do this. You’re no no no damn child anymore.”
You have an axe now.
An axe to slay an insect. The idea was hysterical, really.
An axe to turn a monster into a hero, maybe?
He ignored that small hopeful whisper, shoved it back deep inside the hole it had crawled out of and ran.
Sahar nearly lost his balance as he dodged a branch, speeding down a mossy root right towards the clearings edge.
Children’s screams, shrill with terror, echoed from below, cutting through the forest’s silence like a rusty knife. They were so loud Sahar nearly missed it in between the first seconds of shock and his thunderous heartbeat.
This rattling, bone chilling hiss, biting and burying itself deep into one’s very core.
Every hair on Sahar’s body stood. Electrified with fear.
Could it be?
His chest crashed into a thick vine of ivy before he could react or bring his feet to a halt on his race down the slippery root.
Grabbing blindly for the vine, somersaulting thoughts scattering every which way, Sahar caught himself somehow, avoiding a fall down the rocky hillside and meeting certain death as a graceless heap of flailing limbs.
Chest rose and fell with every shuddering breath. He allowed himself to just hang there, hidden within the thick ivy leaves, fighting to get his shaking legs back under control.
The axe’s handle threatened to slip from his clammy fingers and Sahar gripped on tighter, forcing himself to peer through the thick foliage.
A few feet under him, it’s pulsing hairy abdomen turned his way, it stood.
A giant wolf spider.
Its jaws rubbed together in endless agitation, creating this god awful noise.
Sahar wished he could scrub it off his skin. His fingers twitched, rubbing frantically over the smooth wooden handle, as he stared and stared and stared.
Charlotte and the children had encircled the beast somehow, yelling and throwing whatever they could find on the clearing’s rocky ground at it in a desperate attempt to confuse it, keep it from attacking.
So far it seemed to work.
Whenever the beast's eyes looked onto someone, the kids from behind it would hurl stones and mushrooms at its back, forcing the spider’s attention onto themselves.
Its long thorny legs crashed into the ground, kicking dirt and gravel everywhere in its furios thrashing.
That’s when Sahar saw it. Its eyes. He hadn’t noticed at first, between all the movement and blue luminescent mushroom pulp dripping of its body. But one of the spider’s eyes was missing.
The head hunter’s spider!
The controlling device, still rammed deep into its ugly head, had stopped blinking.
The machines malfunctioning must hurt.
No wonder that thing is all over the place.
This was Sahars chance. Hurting, distracted and one eye short, the spider shouldn’t notice him. Not if he came down from above.
Clutching the Axe in both sweaty hands he raised it far above his head. And jumped.
Air rushed past his ears. A storm of raging blood roaring from inside, crashing through his head and drowning his every thought.
There was only gravity left.
Gravity pulling on his limbs, drawing him down faster and faster towards inevitable eight legged death.
But he fell too fast for all the thoughts and fears of disaster to possibly catch up to him. Utterly focused, for the first time in his life, every other thought, the fabric of reality itself ground to a halt.
The only thing still moving were the flexing muscles in his arms and the spider. Abdomen pulsing with its erratic heartbeat. If he could hit that, split the soft flesh there and spill all its blood and guts on the rocky earth, everyone else would live.
The muscles of Sahar’s stomach pulled tight, transforming his body into a bowstring ready to launch.
The children’s surprised shrieks faded to background noise. His biceps bulged, feet drawing closer, his whole body readying for impact.
When suddenly, a pebble, small like a penny, came free from the sole of his heavy work boots. And dropped. Hitting the spider mere seconds before he would. But for vicious instinct carved from hard moving flesh, seconds were more than enough.
The world narrowed to a flash of glistening lidless eyes and pain as a leg, heavy like a tree trunk, bashed him into the hillside. Sahar’s spine lit up in agony. Pain spread through his arm like wildfire. It took everything in him to keep it from exploding.
Just let it. Let it. Don’t waste your time holding back!
No! No no no no, I can’t.
I’m scared.
“Sahar!”
Charlotte’s shriek cut through the storm of his mind, a lighthouse siren guiding all his scattered thoughts in one direction. His eyes snapped open, met midnight black teeth, sharp like daggers and dripping poison. The creature towered over him. Its liquefied promise of pain dripped to the ground.
Sahar’s body felt heavy, a disconnected breathing stone, teetered to the hard earth.
“Sahar! For fucks sake move!”
His limbs had forgotten how to obey his commands. A silent scream existing solely behind clenched teeth. The neurons in his head all failed to fire.
My Axe? It’s gone!
His eyes dropped from the spiders clicking jaws, searching frantically between its thorny legs. As if that thing would do him any good now.
Not against this seething monstrosity.
Dirt danced under its body, swirling up with every shuddering gusts of hot air exhaled through the breathing holes along its abdomen, so hidden under its body Sahar would have missed them if he wasn’t practically cowering under that thing.
He could see children’s legs storming off to safety, scattering and disappearing in between bushes and behind mushrooms. Their bluish glow grew stronger with every second of fading daylight.
Good.
At least he had been able to save them, before-
“I said. Move!”
Charlotte charged at the spider, pale fingers wrapped around the Axe in a death grip. Debris crunched under her shoes, flying every which way.
The weapon swung back into a wide arc, twisting her whole body with the force of her attack.
There was a visceral sort of grace to her, in that moment, in the flexing of her muscles, in the way her soft pink lips twisted back into a snarl, revealing a row of perfectly white teeth.
She was fury incarnate.
Her conviction alone seemed enough to strike that beast down.
It jerked its abdomen high into the air, stubby spinnerets twitching, the only warning before it fired. A wave of white glistening silk erupted from its silk glands, hardening as it flew towards Charlotte. The force of the impact knocked her backwards and she crashed down, fighting for balance on one knee.
Only her head and right arm remained spared from the silvery, hardening restrains that bound her to the ground.
“Fuck. Fuck!”
The Axe’s blade barely left a dent in the silk as Charlotte struggled to cut herself free one handed.
Terror held Sahar’s heart captive, had it flutter and beat with all its might, trying to escape anxiety’s iron grip.
He watched in horror as the spider turned towards Charlotte, its remaining seven eyes flashing green in the mushroom’s glow.
Its mighty body tensed, a barely there tremble rippling through pulp splattered legs. The hiss of slowly opening jaws rung over the clearing, shrill like funeral bells.
“No!”
Finally, Sahars legs moved. Launching him forward with the force of a slingshot projectile.
A gust of breath brushed his left shoulder, warm and surreally alive, as he dived past the spider's abdomen and dashed towards its mouth.
Its hairs tickled the crown of Sahar’s head.
Poison slicked fangs flashed in the last rays of dying daylight as massive jaws moved. Opened. Struck down.
A tooth burrowed deep into Sahars right arm, slicing skin and muscle like a glowing knife would butter. He felt something hard crack and splinter inside him, felt the resistance and inevitable give of his bones as the fang pierced through.
Excruciating agony exploded in his arm, threatened to devour him whole.
His body’s torment broke free with a deafening crack.
The cells of his right arm crystalized. Growing muscles twisted and hardened into an impenetrable shield, crushing the fang still buried deeply in his flesh into a hundred pieces.
Venom welled from Sahars wound, dripped down solid skin, unable to pass the armor of mutated flesh.
He could feel the pressure of the spider’s tooth stump against the wound as it bared down.
New waves of pain welled up, crashed through him like a storm flood, drowning every other sensation, every thought.
Unrelenting jaws squeezed tighter still and tears trickled over Sahar’s cheeks, down his nose, falling to the dusty ground like raindrops.
The other fang graced his ribs. Threatened to break skin.
Oh god. Oh please no.
Conjuring every last remnant of strength hidden in his muscles, Sahars pushed back. The spider’s cool hairy flesh gave under the press of his elbow, the tiniest bit, and its fang pulled back.
He hadn’t thought it possible for this pain to climb higher still, but here it was, whisking him away to a dimension composed solely of suffering.
The scream tearing from his throat didn’t sound like his own. But he could feel it, as it clawed its way out, bursting past his lips in raw desperation.
“Sahar?” The whisper of a voice found its way through the pain filled fog his existence had been reduced to and he forced his eyes open. Whimpering.
When had he even closed them?
Charlotte’s pale freckled face hovered centimeters from his. Splatters of blood trickled down the birthmark of her left cheek and dried in the copper curls of her bangs.
A faint, shuddering part of Sahar realized that this blood was his own.
Her eyes were blown wide and the blue of her irises danced in the surrounding bloodshot white of them.
“What have you done? Oh god what have you done?” There were tears, imprisoned in the tremble of her voice.
I don’t know. My body just moved.
The words were nothing but a whisper in his head, unable to escape a body shuddering and hurting and trapped on the brink of collapse.
He knew how it felt to lose control, over his senses, his mutation, his emotions but nothing had ever felt like this. He’d never felt as disconnected, as betrayed from his own flesh as the moment his knees gave out and he crashed to the ground. The fangs tip tore through his linen shirt, soaking the fabric with poison.
Screwing his eyes shut in terror filled anticipation, Sahar didn’t see Charlotte’s face morph into a ferocious scowl. All bared teeth and fierce determination.
The Axe’s wooden handle splintered under short sharp nails and fury as she swung it, with the strength of 17 years’ worth of hard work living in her muscles.
The spider’s left jaw split with the sickening tearing of flesh.
Sahar’s red blood mixed with the spider’s blue in the dirt as it gushed from the wound and dripped down the Axe.
The spider’s nearly dismembered mandible flapped uselessly from side to side as it sprung back, unsure if to retreat or attack.
With the pressure of its jaws gone, Sahar collapsed onto the blood soiled earth. A few dirt grains danced in the gusts of his labored breaths and the tears Charlotte had so desperately tried to hold on to burst free without restraint The spider webs still held her to the ground as she began to frantically claw at the silken sticky mess, desperate to break free.
Sahars tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth as he rasped, “Hey. Hey hey hey ‘s fine….. fine now. Let… let me-”
Words failed him, all washed away by a new wave of hot boiling pain as he willed his mutilated, mutated arm to move, despite every fiber of his being wailing protest. Sharp pointy fingertips dug into the silk and tore it apart like a clawed animal clumsily disemboweling its prey. A howling hissing one at that.
He wanted nothing more than to get out of here and for this unbearable pain to finally, blessedly end.
Oh god please just make it stop.
Charlotte’s free hand found its way into Sahars brown unruly hair and scratched over his scalp in slow soothing circles. He leaned into the touch, this something-other-than-all-consuming-pain-feeling and whined softly.
“Shh shhh. Almost done. It’s almost over.”
He continued to rip the silk to shreds until Charlotte was finally freed. She shot up, dragging Sahar with her. He howled in agony.
Hunted blue eyes darted back to the spider, cowering low on the ground. Its seven eyes stared back, glowing in the mushrooms light.
“We have to move, Sahar. That thing‘s not done with us.”
He willed his shaking legs to stumble alongside Charlotte, when a shot rang over the clearing. Loud like a thunderclap announcing a storm.
Flinching hard enough to make him cry out Sahar witnessed the spider collapse. A thick metal stud pierced through its head, painting abstract patterns of dull blue blood and glowing mushroom pulp over its twitching body.
The ferocious predator transformed into a corpse bleeding starlight.

Plans - Haz Osterfield
Pairing: Commoner!Haz x Princess!Reader (Forbidden Love AU)
Requested? Yes! By anon
Hamilrequest #5
“For the first time, I’m thinkin’ past tomorrow.”
This is set in the old times
Summary: In which Harrison is one step ahead of you.
Edit: Part 2 is here x
You ran to the woods, following the path you’ve created long ago. You often went to the woods to unwind and sketch. It wasn’t until two months ago when you met Harrison. He was the son of a tailor. It didn’t take long for him to be a tailor too and he was very good at his job.
Like you, he went to the woods to unwind. The day he saw you, he immediately fell in love. He’s never seen the princess up close and personal before. You fell in love with him too. Both of you were convinced that you’re meant for each other.
All you have to do is face the challenges ahead.
As a princess, you’re not allowed to marry a commoner and you are arranged to marry a prince from another kingdom as a form of alliance. You didn’t agree with it and you didn’t want it, because you saw your older sister being so distraught when she married the prince betrothed to her; it’s like all the life was sucked out of her. When your sister found out that you were going through the same situation, she begged you to get yourself out of it and she’ll help you. She didn’t want you to go through the same thing.
Thus, your commitment to Harrison in meeting in the woods twice a week. Last week, when you and him met up in the woods again, you took a long stroll until you reached the heart of the woods; far from everyone and everything. He showed you a little shack that he built with the help of his closest friend, Thomas, who was a carpenter.
It wasn’t perfect, but you loved it, because it was a place for you and Harrison. That night, you made love. Both of you were happy that you lost your virginities to each other. It was wrong, because both of you weren’t married, but it was right because you loved each other and for some reason, that was more important than anything else.
Now, you were meeting up with him again and you missed him dearly. You reached the shack and knocked before entering. You immediately saw him by the window sill, sketching something on his notebook.
“Hello, my love.” you smiled at him softly. He looked up at you and quickly hid the notebook. You walked towards him and he stood up from the floor.
“What were you doing?” you asked. Harrison shook his head and smiled, “It was nothing, my dear. How are you?”
“I feel better now that I’m here with you.” you smiled before kissing him passionately. Kissing him felt amazing. For a second, you forgot everything else and it was just the two of you.
The two of you and no one else. That was such an amazing idea, but you knew it could never be. It was as if God was punishing you for something. Imagine meeting the love of your life only to realize that your love was forbidden. It killed you to even think about it.
Harrison pulled away from the kiss, the feeling of the kiss still lingering. He looked at you and said, “I bring good tidings.”
You smiled, “What is it?”
“Thomas and I are building a house on the outskirts of town.” he grinned. You weren’t sure how that news applied to you, but you figured he just wanted to share his excitement.
“Oh, how frabjous! You and Thomas must be excited.”
“It’s for us, love.”
You looked into Harrison’s eyes and there was a sparkle in them.
“That’s what I was sketching. I wanted it to be a secret, but I couldn’t help it. We could live there and get married and start a family.” He listed and held your hands.
“Harrison, darling, we can’t.” you frowned, letting go of his hands.
“Why not? Is it because our love is forbidden? Is it because I’m not a prince?”
“You don’t understand.”
“Then make me understand!” Harrison pleaded. “I want to be with you and I’m doing everything I can to make that happen. Don’t you want to be with me?”
“Of course I want to be with you, bu-”
“Then let’s run away!” Harrison suggested.
“It’s not easy.” you told him and looked away. “I have responsibilities here. I can’t just leave. Besides, I don’t know much outside the palace. I don’t belong out there with you.”
“That’s why I’m here!” he sighed. He held your face in his hands and continued, “All my life I didn’t know what I wanted, but then you came along and changed that. Y/N, darling, I’ve never been more sure about this in my entire life.”
“What will happen to me if I go with you?” you asked. You didn’t want to leave the palace only to have nothing.
“You’ll stay with me and my family. If you’re not comfortable with that, Thomas offered his room for you.”
“Where will he stay if that happens?”
“He’ll share a room with one of his brothers.”
“If I stay with you, where will I sleep?”
“My mother would never allow us to sleep in the same room, because we’re not married. But you can stay with my sister, Charlotte.” Harrison said. “Then when Thomas and I are finished with building the house, we could buy some furniture and finally live in it.”
“What about money? We need that.” you said.
“I’ll continue working at the tailor shop.” Harrison shrugged.
“What about me? Where will I work?” you asked. If you were to start a life with Harrison, you wanted to work too. Even if you haven’t had experience in that area.
“Well, you can’t work with me, because you’re scared of needles.” Harrison thought. “You could work with Thomas in carpentry?”
You shook your head.
Harrison bit his lip in deep thought. He really wanted to be with you and he’s proving that.
“Thomas has a brother who owns a bakery. His name is Sam. I heard that he desperately needed help… you could work there?” Harrison asked.
You nodded, “Okay. Now that that’s arranged, what about my situation with my family?”
“I recall you telling me that your sister was willing to help us. We could ask for her help. I also know that your mother has a hunch of what’s going on.”
“How can you tell?” you raised an eyebrow.
“All mothers know when their child is hiding something from them.” Harrison explained. “That’s why I told my mother about us the moment she felt that I had a secret.”
“Are you saying I should tell my mother?!” you shrieked.
“She might even help us; she might understand.” Harrison said softly.
“You obviously don’t know my mother.” you rolled your eyes.
“Love, just try. There’s no harm in that.” He sighed. “It’s my first time thinking past tomorrow and I’m not just throwing it away.”
“You’re right.” you smiled softly. “I’ll talk to my mother and my sister to ask for help and then I’m yours. I’ll meet you here again after three days, alright?”
“Alright.” Harrison grinned in excitement. “I shall see thee soon.”
You kissed him once more before leaving the small shack with a large grin on your face.

Tove Jansson Videos!
Here’s a list of some videos on yle that feature Tove Jansson and often others; most are interviews, though there are some that aren’t. These probably aren’t all of them, and there’s also audio recordings you can find, but it’s late and I need to get up early tomorrow so I’m posting this as is lol.
Lars, Tove and Tuulikki in Japan - 15.9.1991 - Short one featuring the iconic trio!!!! Tove once again being a fashion ICON and referring to the others with their nicknames ‘Lasse’ and ‘Tooti’ :’)
Tove's brother Lars and Tuulikki Pietilä travel to Japan to see Moomin animations that have been completed. They are extremely satisfied.
Interview with Tove at Klovharun in Pellinge - 2.9.1991 - Oh this is GOOOOD! Tove is so lovely and cheerful in it (she is in them all, tbh) and we see some 90s Moomin anime character sheets!!!!
Reporter Christian Forsberg siblings Tove and Lars Jansson at Klovharun in Pellinge archipelago. They discuss the Japanese animations, why Tove thinks they are good, and what it's been like to work with them. We also hear more about the advent of Moomintroll.
The Japanese Animations - 6.9.1991 - Tove talks about her love for Snufkin in this one :D
The youth magazine X-tra also speaks with Tove Jansson. Junior reporter Nike Tallqvist interviews Tove Jansson. Tove Jansson and Sixten Lundberg, who has given Moomintroll their voice, talk about the animations. Tove Jansson is very happy and satisfied with the films. They have become good, she thinks. Especially Snufkin is nice. "I'd like to be like that," she says.
The Moomins and the Great Flood - 18.11.1991 - However, Tove Jansson is not so pleased with the new release of Småtrollen and the great flood. She thinks the book is not good.
Tove Jansson and Tuulikki Pietilä about art and life - 09.15.1991 - Tove, Tooti, and Pentti talk in this one and we see Moomin figures & tableaux.
Here, Tove Jansson and Too-ticky, Tuulikki Pietilä, are interviewed about the construction of the Moomin House. The idea came from Pentti Eistola, who built a smaller Moomin house. And from that, the idea of the house grew. The gang gathered for play nights where there was carpentry, painting and sewing.
The house travelled around the world, first to a Moomin exhibition in Bratislava, to finally stay at the Moomin exhibition in the Tampere library.
Here we hear what Tuulikki likes to make herself as a doll. And why Pentti Eistola made a Moomin House.
Tove and Friends - 1970 - This is literally just a 24-minute-long video of Tove chilling with some mates including Lasse Pöysti and Birgitta Ulfsson and Erna Tauro oh my gosh!!!!
Here we visit Tove Jansson in her studio home with friends of her. Lasse Pöysti sings the Moomintroll show, Tove draws and the gang discusses.
It is a real home for reportage. From time to time, someone puts in a relevant question, and in between you talk gently, cut bread and cheese, and drink wine.
Discussions revolve around the studio home, drawing Moomin films, Moomin visors and Tove Jansson's writing.
Erna Tauro, who wrote the music for Tove Jansson's songs, talks about how it feels to compose to lyrics.
EDIT: This one also has a version with Finnish subtitles!! Here
Tove Jansson on the Moomin House - 1.9.1979 - This one has some pretty good shots of the moominhouse tableau!
With the help of friends Tuulikki Pietilä and Pentti Eistola, Tove Jansson has created a Moominhouse, a dream house that stands for everything that modern architecture does not do.
It took several years to create the perfect house. The decor is complete in every detail. In the Moomin House you can find everything needed in a house.
The Moomin House will travel to Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. Architecturally, the Moomin House is a concoction of different styles; Karelian style, baroque, empire and rococo.
Tove Jansson is happy and eager. She sees the Moomin House as a fantasy house that stands against the modern beehives where no one wants to live.
About Tove Jansson's childhood - 09.15.1991
Tove Janssons talks about her safe but bohemian childhood and how her life has become with the celebrity.
Tove Janssons' upbringing was bohemian and artistic. If mother Ham (Signe Hammarsten-Jansson) can not tell Tove Jansson, it is difficult to tell if someone you have loved so much.
But about her father (Viktor Jansson) she draws stories. He was a bohemian, with an unavoidable attraction to the bourgeois. He longed for disasters and kept them in good spirits.
You may see where the characters Moominmamma and Moominpappa and really the whole family come from.
About Tove's choice of profession and Moomin's birth - 09.15.1991
Tove Jansson talks about how the little troll was born in a comic book Garm. It was just a coincidence that she started writing children's books, maybe she longed for childhood summers.
The creatures give each other freedom. But the figures evolved. As an example, Tove Jansson takes Moominmamma who can get really angry. And Snufkin, who is totally free and alone, comes and goes as he pleases. He was Tove Jansson's idol for a long time, but he is really self-centred and spoiled. After all, it is easy to be alone and stick out in the wilderness when you are hailed and applauded when you get home. Fillyjonk, on the other hand, goes under by loneliness.
The cartoon was what took Tove Jansson's loss. It was terrible, but Too-ticky helped Tove Jansson write Moominland Midwinter. There she placed Moomintroll in a strange world. He not only experienced adventure, but also difficulties.
The Moomin World, the Celebrity and the Moomin Fan - 15.9.1991
Tove Jansson also talks about the difficulty of being known, all the fans who write and demand answers. She refers to Topelius and Astrid Lindgren who know equally.
When there is talk of all the research in Tove Jansson's books, she just gets irritated, they could wait a bit at least.
Tove Jansson Receives Award - 24.4.1987 - very cool shot of her putting on sunglasses in this lol
Tove Jansson became more and more shy over the years, but she gained recognition for her Moomin books all her life. She talks a lot about fame and trouble.
Anna Savonius wonders if the Moomin books became too narrow when Tove Jansson can no longer write about them. Tove Jansson thinks that they changed the meaning, and she went back to visual art.
And with horrible mothers she switched to short stories and novels.
Mostly she writes well for herself. But children's books need a happy ending, it may be awful, but not cruel and contain justice and honesty. However, you do not need education.
Tove Jansson Turns 80 - 8.8.1994 - from the same article as the video above.
Tove Jansson Becomes a Professor - 5.11.1995
Tove Jansson became an honorary professor and was 80 years old before she died on June 27, 2001.
Tove Jansson on working with books and visual arts - 4.6.1984
Tove Jansson talks about Summer Book and The Dangerous Journey. And about how difficult it is to write for children and for adults.
Tove Jansson has often talked about how celebrity has made it more difficult to write. And how she gets stuck and doesn't move on.
In Charlotte Aira's deep and strong interview, Tove Jansson returns to this. Writing is a heavy job, as heavy and difficult as painting.
This summer book is perhaps the book that is strongest for Tove Jansson and best describes Tove Jansson's life.
In the interview, Tove Jansson also talks about nature, the children and the Moomin role. Tove Jansson does not think she is escapist, everything is in reality.
They talk about Tove Jansson's adult books and visual arts, which journalists are not always interested in.
Tove Jansson receives the Topelius Prize - 9.28.1978
Tove Jansson received the Topelius Prize in 1978 when she published The Dangerous Journey (1977). It is Tove Jansson's last picture book about the Moomin role. Tove Jansson thinks about the dangerous journey, she thinks it may not have been so successful in terms of text, but she likes the pictures.
Tove Jansson in Naantali - 6.24.1993
Moomin mother Tove Jansson took part in a big event when Naantali Moomin World opened.
Tove Jansson thinks it is quite fun to participate when the Moomin characters come alive.
But she had never thought of such a thing when she wrote her first Moomin book.
And she knows that there will be no more Moomin books, now Tove Jansson is just trying to write short stories for adults.
A glimpse of Tove Jansson
Tove Jansson's Moomintroll spread all over the world. Today you can find everything from Moomin soaps to refrigerator magnets. Finally, Tove Jansson started hating her Moomintroll.
Here, Tove Jansson tells Chris Zitting about how fame has affected her. About how she hated to see her beloved character being commercialised and because of that, she began to lose the desire to write about Moomin.
She also talks about the inspiration to start writing more adult books.
Tove Jansson tells us that the book Moominland Midwinter (1957) was very important to her. She was stuck and couldn't write a lot more, but her life partner Tuulikki Pietilä (Too-ticky) helped her by suggesting that she place Moomintroll in a new and strange world. That helped Tove Jansson move on.
The interview was made in 1988, but was shown again after Jansson's death in 2001. The program has Finnish subtitles.
New Year’s Eve 1957 - 3.1.1957
