It was good to know that they had each other's backs if the worst happened. Having a plan in place in case the person you were traveling with started becoming flesh-hungry was smart. The end could come out of nowhere. Rain snorted at Matt's joke. "Then that's all settled."

She listened as he talked more about his dating life. "So, you were a doormat, huh? C'mon, man. Don't let people walk all over you just 'cause you're into 'em. If a chick can't handle the word 'no' or doesn't show appreciation for the shit you do, then she ain't worth your time."

"If it's any consolation, I thought you were funny-lookin' when we met, too," Rain joked back. Everybody's dating pool was much more limited with the whole... global apocalypse thing, but Matt certainly had things even harder if most people ran away or shot at him. "Who knows, maybe there's some other mutated weirdo out there for ya," she mused. "I mean, you can't be the only guy out there who didn't just turn into your average brainless, walkin' corpse."

The yellow fluid got on her boots. Her features twisted in disgust. She made sure to wipe it off on the thin green carpet. "Smells like stink bugs. But worse." She glanced up at Matt as she said it and finally processed that his nose appeared to be gone. "Can you even smell that?"

When he affirmed that all present threats had been disposed of, Rain reholstered her firearm. And as soon as she realized where he was stomping off to, she rolled her eyes, watching as he started pouring cookies into his mouth like a monstrous garbage disposal with something akin to disbelief. Of course, she was the one to point out that they could probably find the treat here, so she supposed she had no right to be surprised that that was his priority.

Whatever. Guess there's no rush. Rain wandered past him and grabbed a sucker off the shelf, tossed the wrapper aside, and popped it in her mouth. As she made her way toward the medical supplies and otc medicine, she stopped in the makeup section to snag a few eyeliner pencils. She ripped one open and applied it with the mirror on a sunglass display, then shoved it into her cargos alongside the others. At this point, Rain still bothering to put eyeliner on had less to do with liking the way it looked and more to do with it making things feel normal. She always used to wear it and it didn't take up a lot of room, so it didn't hurt to carry it.

She began sticking bandages into her bag. "If I leave you in charge of grabbin' food, are you gonna take the entire stock of cookies with ya? 'Cause that'll all have to ride in the bed with you." Rain would not be letting a surplus of cookies occupy the entirety of her backseats. No way.

In a world ravaged by a virus that primarily creates monsters, nasty encounters are in no short supply. When Rain begins to hear heavy footfalls—when she feels them practically shaking the ground beneath her, she figures she's about to have another.

Cursing under her breath, she unholsters her gun.

The days were blending together in depressing ways now. Nemesis was shocked at how quickly things had gone to hell after the Hive and Raccoon City Incidents. It had taken him quite a while to regenerate after the city's "sanitation," but once he was on his feet again, he realized the gravity of what was happening to the world.

Alone and with nothing left to do in his current mutated state, Nemesis had taken to showing up at Umbrella facilities unannounced, and destroying as much of them as he could. The digital feed supplied by the retinal implant attached to his right eye and sewn up into his head gave him a lot of useful information, especially after his mind was liberated from Umbrella's control. May as well put it to good use, right?

He'd acquired more clothes and equipment this way, with the boots and leather trenchcoat-style getup being standard issues for a creature called a Tyrant, which he apparently now was. They seemed just about the only things that were going to fit his... unique body shape nowadays.

Learning about himself and destroying Umbrella assets were good pastimes, but Nemesis was extremely lonely. The few survivors he came across now and then either screamed and ran from him or shot at him. Bullet wounds were nothing more than annoying mosquito bites to him now, thanks to his thick hide, but even so... it was demoralizing. All he wanted to do was help. He was almost getting used to being alone all the time, by necessity rather than desire, until that unexpectedly changed. While exploring a city one day, he rounded a corner and-

"Raaaain!" Nemesis bellowed the moment he saw her, unable to contain his excitement upon seeing her. "Oh... ny god!" He couldn't believe his eyes. Well, eye. He still had two, but one was... indisposed. In a move that probably looked damn near ridiculous to the other, he lifted his hand... and waved to her. "I'n so glad... to see you! How... are you... alithe... right now?" he tried to ask, his massive chompers getting in the way, as usual.

Nemesis couldn't get his voice to be anything other than a monotone growl, and with monstrous teeth and a noticeable lack of lips, his speech was something of a garbled mess. It took him a while, but he'd learned to make certain sounds in other ways, using his throat and tongue. Essentially, he'd had to relearn how to speak. Some sounds and words, though, were lost forever. None of that did anything to curb his enthusiasm at seeing Rain alive, however. Was he finally losing his mind? Hallucinating, maybe? No, the target identification system is identifying her as Rain... Right now, Nemesis didn't care either way. Just the sight of her was one for sore eyes, since his last clear memory of her was being at death's door.

"I thought... the anti-thirus... didn't work...?" he said, his elation at seeing her alive completely overriding his common sense. Nemesis wasn't thinking about the fact that Rain wouldn't recognize him anymore, or about how negatively she would likely react to seeing the hulking beast before her. Not to mention his tentacles, rooted at the backs of his shoulders, which were excitedly coiling and undulating in their own right, reacting to his surprise and happiness. He batted one of them with his hand. "Cut it out...!" he admonished the obnoxious appendage. It recoiled temporarily before returning to its idle activities.

Then it dawned on him, especially with how she had her gun at the ready. Oh no... she has no idea who I am. "It's Natt," he said, laying his hand on his chest. "Natt... Ad-di-son." How pathetic is it that I can't even say my own name correctly anymore? he thought grimly.

4. Eddie Munson – Stranger Things (He’s the age-appropriate choice. I’m not usually into metal heads but there’s something about him that got me hooked when I first saw him. Also had too little screen time, but I still have hope he’ll appear in Season 5)

5. Frank Castle – Punisher (There is something so attractive about men covered in blood. He’s morally grey but, like, in a cool way. So what if he kills people?)

6. Addison Montgomery – Grey’s Anatomy (Mommy. That’s all I’ve got to say. I love her so much. I want her to adopt me. I want to be her child.)

7. Loki – Loki, Avengers, etc. (Does he count? I feel like he should count. Because I am so in love with Loki, it drives me crazy. Maybe it’s the Tom Hiddleston obsession, or maybe it’s because I like my anti-heroes with dark hair.)

8. Peter Parker – The Amazing Spider-Man (I’m talking Andrew’s Spidey. He’s my favorite Spidey. Because I grew up with him, and I love Andrew. I just want to give him a hug. The thing with Gwen BROKE me, and also her back.)

it's that time again—new pulp episode means it's time to learn how to draw new characters! so here are a few scribbles I managed to do yesterday. :]

I love Dakkar and Addison so much already and I'm excited to practice drawing them a lot more later. Oh, and I know Matt mentioned the idea of Top being a greyhound during the After-Pulp, but my heart has already decided he's one of those dogs with the extra furry muzzles, lol.

Books Read in November 2024

Silence Fallen by Patricia Briggs

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison - The audiobook this time! I’m not sold on the narrator, but I like this book so much that it was forgivable. 

The Wild Swans by Peg Kerr - as my notes on this one say: hmm. I do actually have a short review of this one written up. I'll post it eventually.

Burn Bright by Patricia Briggs - I was going to wait to read more Briggs, but then the election happened and my brain desperately needed something. » This one gave us some Leah POV and more from her and honestly? She is a very good character. I loved getting to see her in action. » I think Briggs made some odd choices about Mercy’s early relationships with the wolf pack. It was honestly disappointing for Anna to say “oh, Bran was like into Mercy” and for no one to disagree? Charles is even like “fine, you’re right, but we don’t talk about it!” Especially coming off of Silence Fallen where Bran goes to help rescue Mercy in secret and talks about how she’s been basically his daughter since her mother left her with the wolves. » It made for a fun discord conversation about how it could’ve been done differently, while still keeping tension in the relationships leading to Mercy leaving the pack. » I do still really like these books fwiw!

The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy - Like I said earlier, embarrassing how quickly I latched onto this book as soon as it became apparent that Percy was desperately in love with his wife and couldn’t show it. Also I liked that the book was mostly from Margot’s perspective. 💥 Real shitty anti-semitic disguise and stereotypes used by the MC at the end of the book.

When the Angels Left the Old Country by Sacha Lamb - So fun! A great audiobook. Constant comparisons to Good Omens aside…. This book was very grounded in daily life & struggles. Dealing with the cost to emigrate. Horrible boat conditions. Ellis Island doctors turning people away for mysterious reasons. A strike against a factory owner! And there’s a mean lesbian there!

Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance by Lois McMaster Bujold - Oh, Ivan.

The Return of Fitzroy Angursell by Victoria Goddard - Fun!! Very different style than Hands of the Emperor. The kind of ridiculous fantasy adventure where every step lands you in more trouble or gets you an unexpected encounter. Fitzroy has been out on the road for one week and you would not believe what’s been going on.

Graphic Novel:

Cosmic Detective by Jeff Lemire, Matt Kindt, David Rubín

Standalone tech-noir, cyberpunk mystery/crime graphic novel. Pretty good.

I honestly have no idea when I'm going to find the time to write this idea. But I recently had the idea of a Stucky Grey's Anatomy AU. It's plaguing my brain, and I'm slowly, slowly planning it out. Rain didn't exactly understand Matt's level of incredulity. Well, she did sometimes get reactions along those lines, but the way he said it indicated that he was certain he already knew her personality as well as her name, adding to the strangeness of the situation. "Yeah. Not at all."

While she tended to have more pacifistic tendencies, Rain could acknowledge that that wasn't exactly an option against mindless, bloodthirsty monsters that could easily turn her into one of them. "I get it." But when Matt told her that she needed to learn how to use a firearm, she still grimaced slightly. "Right. Okay. Keeping distance is preferable when it comes to these things."

One of the zombies he shot down was in an R.P.D. uniform. "Maybe he's still got a gun on him." Rain decided to approach the prone body. There was indeed a service pistol still sitting in his holster. She gave him a little kick to make sure he wasn't going to move again, then bent down and reluctantly took the weapon. "So, how do I..." just by the way she was holding it, it was apparent she didn't know what she was doing. No trigger discipline, "use this?"

Not calling somebody by the name they preferred was a pretty fundamental level of disrespect, in Rain's opinion. She hated it when people called her Larraine, so if he preferred Matt, she'd call him Matt. Simple. Nemesis obviously wasn't a name he chose for himself. It was a name chosen by people trying to make a living weapon.

She was right about him being a super soldier. And apparently, he hadn't even signed up for it. "God, that's terrible... I'm so sorry, man," she said sympathetically.

It often felt as though Umbrella owned everything. A good portion of Raccoon City's population worked for them. Or rather, people in this facility, apparently. Rain still needed proof regarding that. But regardless, she could believe that this was all about money. How twisted.

She took note of the fact that Matt basically referred to the tentacles as though they were their own beings. "What, do they have minds of their own?"

So that was supposedly all she was around for...? Tests? All of this was disturbing to think about. And confusing. If she was a clone, how much of her past was real? Did all the people she knew actually exist at any point, or were they nothing more than false memories? How similar was she to the original Rain? "Is that the only difference you've noticed?" she asked after a beat. There was a bit of comfort in the idea that she wasn't an exact copy. That there were differences. But were those programmed into her, too? Was any part of her authentic or real? It had to be. Or she wouldn't be willing to entertain all of this, right? Good god.

Rain covered her head when Matt raised his chain gun to the sky and opened fire. As soon as the short-circuiting noise reached her ears, a sort of nervous anticipation started tightening in her chest. He wasn't remotely full of it, was he? This was real. Well, it wasn't real. It was all fake. That was the reality. And when she was greeted with that black, rectangular, glitchy spot in the sky? There was no arguing with that, was there? Rain watched as a panel fell and struck a Honda parked in someone's driveway. "...Alright... I believe you," she uttered following an uncomfortable silence, during which she tried to process everything.

She was a clone. In a simulation. Made for testing purposes. Holy shit. How was one even meant to process knowledge that huge and crazy? Now was definitely not the time to spiral, so she did her best to not think about it much harder for the time being. There was no reason to linger in this destruction any longer, and she did want to see what lay beyond. "...Lead the way."

[From Good Rain] The chaos that had overtaken the simulated streets finally seemed to have settled down. Rain thought that she might finally have a moment to catch her breath, but then found herself blanketed by the shadow of a massive figure.

Nemesis lived his life in a sedative-induced haze, whether he was asleep or awake. Most of the time he was kept sedated to the point of being knocked out, but even while awake, it was as if his mind was lethargic or something. His personality, the parts of him that were Matt instead of Nemesis, were buried deep, half-asleep, too tired and distant to take control. All he could do is watch through his own eyes as he did things he didn't want to do, killed people he didn't want to kill, because he was ordered to. The controlled parts of his mind went on autopilot once an order was given, and his body moved without him wanting it to. It was like being an unwilling passenger in a car driven by a homicidal robot.

Being recaptured after Raccoon City was his absolute worst nightmare. Why couldn't he have just been killed by the nuclear weapon like other normal human beings? No, he had to strangely regenerate, his virus-permeated form only spurred on by the radioactivity and too focused on survival to allow him to die. It hadn't been bad at first... Oh, sure, he'd grown tentacles, and he was a few inches taller than he'd been before. Maybe more muscular too. Had his bones gotten thicker? But regardless, he was alive and free and could do whatever he wanted. Until Umbrella caught him with a trap they'd laid out for him...

And that was that. He was taken to some cold-ass place in Russia, under the ocean and the glaciers he used to advocate to save as an environmental activist, and re-enslaved. He had a vague sense of who he was, of what had come before this. It came more to him in dreams than anything else. But for now, he just couldn't seem to take back his autonomy. Without Alice to help quite literally in beating some sense into him, Nemesis felt forever doomed to repeat simulation after simulation, killing innocent people again and again.

He hated the New York testing environment. Before he'd been plunged into hell, he'd been a nature lover, a camper, a hiker... and frankly, the smell of gasoline, metal, rubber, and city funk was something that had become downright triggering to him. Not to mention the hulking creatures with massive nails and spikes through their heads he was sometimes made to battle. Axemen, they were called. Gross, he thought, and yet he felt sorry for whoever they used to be.

So at first, when he'd been released into an entirely different simulation with blue skies, green grass, and the occasional pet dog running around, Nemesis thought something had changed for the better. But... no. He recognized these streets. They were the suburbs of Raccoon. He could almost walk to his house from here... Not only that, but they had him hunting down innocent people again. Why? Like, what purpose does this serve? Of course I'm gonna be able to kill these poor people, what does this prove?! All he could do was watch in horror, unable to stop seeing the world through his left good eye and Umbrella's orders and ticker data through his experimentally altered right one.

During times like this, Matt tried to distract himself so he didn't have to face the reality of what he was being made to do. It helped that he always felt foggy, like he was asleep and couldn't quite wake up. It was easy to just let go and be a passenger when he couldn't even hold a coherent thought long enough to-

Wait, I know her!

Nemesis stopped for a moment when he saw the woman. The sight of her was like glass shattering inside his mind, breaking windows and letting in air and light where there had only been a dark void before. It hurt, the sudden flood of memories, and it was anything but coherent. Flashes of people he knew but couldn't remember the names of, glimpses of the Hive, creatures and sounds and screams... It gave him a headache, breaking Umbrella's control on him for a second time, but it was the best pain ever. He felt like he'd woke up after years of slumber, dazed but in control.

Lowering his chain gun to his side, Nemesis clomped over to the woman as his visual overlay courtesy of his retinal implant identified her as Rain Ocampo. Rain... The name came with another traumatic flash of memories, and Nemesis didn't get his hopes up. Rain was dead. He remember now... he had killed her himself. It was something he'd seen in his nightmares a multitude of times before Umbrella had leashed him again. It was one of the worst things he'd ever had to do, shooting Rain. So this... couldn't be her. Unless...

Clones...

Nemesis knew the testing environments were populated with clones because Umbrella considered them expendable stand-ins for "real" humans. It was incredibly sick, even if the technological advancements that had created them and the environments themselves were nothing short of amazing. Oh man, now he was pissed. They cloned Rain? Really? What the fuck, Umbrella, seriously?!

As he got closer to her, he knew this probably wouldn't go well. He looked like road pizza. Actually... most roadkill looked better than he did at this point. But he had to try, nevertheless. Even if she was just a clone, she was some part of Rain that was still alive, and that meant something to him. "Rain...?" he asked, hoping he wouldn't scare the shit out of her...

The Goblin Emperor (Katharine Addison) - this little dude is the unwanted half-goblin bastard son of the emperor and has been stashed very "out of sight out of mind" with an asshole for a caretaker pretty much all his life. his shit dad and the three legitimate heirboys to the throne all unexpectedly kick it, leaving the court aghast to discover oh no, the embarrassing half-goblin bastard is the freaking EMPEROR now? he's just a kiddo with a shitload of anxiety and trauma who is socially awkward and now has to rule an entire empire while a lot of people try to manipulate, bully, use, and backstab him. fortunately, there are some not-shit folks around too while he figures himself out, learns to stand tall (he a literal short king tho), investigates his estranged family's murders, deals with politics, and maybe realizes he's been a worthy person all along and can be a good ruler to his people.

Sunshine (Robin McKinley) - vampires! alternate world not unlike our own, and our family-bakery protagonist gets herself caught up with vampires (mostly truly horrible and ghastly and gross) and magical-governing agencies when she just wants to bake her cinnamon-rolls-as-big-as-your-head and try a new chocolate cupcake recipe. family secrets drama, hidden magic drama, romantic drama with a really lovely and chill boyfriend but also a bizarre and not-as-gross vampire. neil gaiman endorsed this one when it was new, if that tells you about the kind of weird, dark, and very rich atmosphere it has.

Villains duology (Vicious and Vengeful) (V E Schwab) - the bad guys are kind of the good guys, but not in a leverage way because they're definitely bad guys and damn is victor vale an asshole. eli ever is just a much bigger, worse, more sanctimonious asshole who styles his serial killings as heroic. (bizarre ex-bffs but shit went bad between them in college and really spiraled from there.) superpowers, ace protagonist, homoerotic tension, absolute bastards, more found family than you can shake a stick at, action and clever plotting abound. listen to "put it on me" by matt maeson for a preview of The Vibes.

The Murderbot Diaries (Martha Wells) - the mortifying ordeal of being known, triple aaa style (agender, asexual, aromantic.) murderbot just wants to watch its favorite shows and not be perceived, but unfortunately it's really good at helping people, mostly because it stumbled onto some unexpectedly decent ones it kinda would prefer alive, and humans are so damn bad at doing their own security it's downright embarrassing. our hero is a robot-human construct trapped in a capitalist hellscape in far-future space and solves mysteries, is hilarious (inside its own head mostly), kicks a lot of ass, and very reluctantly explores what this whole autonomous personhood deal is about while trying to deal with trauma and depression without actually having to admit it.

The Sixth World duology (Rebecca Roanhorse) - indigenous amercian myth and magic in a post-apocalyptic urban fantasy series in which most of the world is underwater now and our heroine deals with magic, murder, making friends and also enemies, and some gods who are definitely not to be trusted. there is romance and it matters, but the plot and worldbuilding rides lead.

Magic for Liars (Sarah Gailey) - the unspecial twin watched her sister turn out to be a magical teen superstar, go away to magical adventure school, and grow up to be famous and beloved and teach at her alma mater. the sisters grew apart until they became estranged adults, with the unspecial sister becoming a depressed private investigator--who is now being hired to investigate a murder at her sister's magical school. family tension, mystery, flawed characters muddling through their messy selves and lives, some romance, and lively worldbuilding. for the ones who loved things like harry potter but grew up to see where it tarnishes.

Fourth Wing (Rebecca Yarros) - the younger daughter of this fantasy country's intimidating general is forced into the dragon-riding side of the military's academy by aforementioned mother, despite that she is small, a little prone to being sickly, and has a disability that will make things much harder on her in this grueling setting where most of the students don't survive the first year. she thrives unexpectedly by utilizing her own strengths, refusing to twist into the sort of vicious shapes she's told are her best chance of survival, makes diehard friends, and navigates an alarming amount of tension of many kinds with the most badass young man at the academy--who happens to hate her because her mother killed his father for leading a rebellion. dragons and magic and action and politics and character development, oh my. more than a little romance, done well, and several queer characters.

The Stand-In (Lily Chu) - freshly fired by an extremely shitty boss, our canadian lady lead gets caught up in a whirlwind of shenanigans when a world-famous chinese actress she just so happens to look a lot like (like... a lot like) ropes her into being her double because she just has too damn many things on her plate and she's dealing with some shit. the money is good, the starlet's boyfriend is hot, if unfortunately a jerk who actively distrusts her, and this will be just what she needs to figure out what to do with her life now that her former career is over. what could go wrong? no one will ever realize she's someone else entirely, and there's obviously no danger of getting involved with the boyfriend when he's so suspicious of her and unfriendly... right? at least the starlet is nice! maybe they'll even become friends.

The City Between series ( W R Gingell) - our australian protagonist has been squatting long-term in the house her parents were brutally murdered in as a child and is dead-set on never leaving. this becomes rather challenging when a gruesome and bizarre murder occurs across the street and three highly suspicious dudes who seem not-exactly-human buy the house she's been living in all this time. turns out they are in fact not human at all, and when they discover her, she can either die, or get mindwiped and kicked out... or talk them into taking her on as their sunshine-perky human pet who happens to be a great cook and make excellent tea. there's a lot more to the world than Pet ever realized (actual layers, in fact), and she seems to be weirdly good at navigating it, which complicates the three dudes' murder investigation which crosses into magic, elven royal politics, werewolves, ghosts, and zombies, not to mention the vampire who refuses to speak anything but his native korean living in her house and pestering the daylights out of her. and the deeper she gets into all this, the more Pet starts to think it all connects back to her own parents' deaths. there's a great deal of complex urban fantasy worldbuilding, found family, fascinating magic systems, humor, friendship, mystery--and rather more action than you might expect, some of it rather brutal. this series is a helluva ride.

Hench (Natalie Zina Walschots) - our heroine (lol) here is a temp/floating henchperson for the local villainous community. it's not ideology, she's just trying to keep rent paid and have food around semi-regularly. a pretty routine temp assignment goes horribly wrong when it puts her on the wrong end of a superhero/villain showdown, leaving her with a permanent injury and a growing fury over the massive collateral damage the so-called heroes do to property and bystanders alike. the power of grudge-driven spreadsheets gets her recruited by the most terrifying villain alive, who happens to be the best boss she's ever had, and a new and dangerous purpose. she might actually save the world a little, though.

listen I ended up regretting saying anything about this on my old blog because people will interpret literally any and every statement maliciously on this hellsite but I want to start like. a helpline for people who are like “hey I pretty much only read YA but I’m like 22 now and don’t relate to teenagers as much, it’s such a shame that there are no fun books written for adults :(” because boy HOWDY are there some fun books for adults
