A Kendall Roy (Succession) Series
Word Count: 1.3k
Warnings: faint mentions of established relationship, sexual tension. All characters are of age. This story is 18+.
part 1
NEW YORK
3.12 AM
Emily stares at the white flushed screen of the newest shitop available in the market. She’s deciphering the flow of the shares today. Her glasses are turning blue with all the big numbers and the emails flowing through the system. There’s an untouched tumbler of souvenir matcha sitting on her desk. Her room’s illuminated a pale white with white lilies on her nightstand and an empty buzz from her phone. Emily rubs her temple, according to the entire finance department of Waystar, the Roys will take the company down with them by a decade. The lavish living and black dog services come with a price. A price they’ve long since forgotten to repay. Emily grunts and bites back her tongue. She looks up at the cerulean walls of her home painted with the same blood as them. Her chestnut eyes gleam, she dreams of Sicily and lush cherries. Bruised corridors and bluer skin. She turns towards the New York sky, cracking her knuckles and wonders how ground hog criminal she must’ve been to witness the corporate red with her own hands.
The next morning, a tall man with pale beach skin and visibly rich eye bags sits with four or five of his advisors and a bunch of younger executives. Emily does not accompany them. She stalls in her own office looking at the sugary buyout. She’s about ninety percent sure that Lawrence, the eldest son’s new venture, will and soon fuck Waystar. She lets out a giddy laugh in her mind and stays put at her cabin, chivalry gleaming in her eyes. Her posture is sleek, not too laid back but neither very professional. Kendall, suited up with cocaine in his back pocket, looks engaged, and rightly denounced, a little too lively.
“This is a merger offer. Not an acquisition. We love what you do.” Kendall appears really passionate about the deal going through. His hands are clammy. He stares right through the upturned eye of the media guy.
“I get it. Of course, someone is always boss. And I don’t think that would be me?”
Kendall’s eyes briefly meet Emily. She’s intensely watching how this playdate plays out. Kendall can’t seem to focus between her glass of white wine at 11 am and that too tight white skirt riding up her thigh. He pretends to fix his tie. Hands imitating her face full of his length. He’s gone. Lilacs and bright Italian skies take over his vision. He’s sucking in another breath. So gone.
Kendall nullifies the rest of the conversation from his head. His eyes juggling between his two memento moris. There seems to a notable disagreement though, Emily senses it before she sees it. Her lip twitches as Lawrence stands up to leave. Kendall abruptly follows, seemingly surprised at the turn of the events. They walk next to each other down the wide corridor that border glass offices with venetian blinds on each side. He’s even wearing those knuckle deep expensive boardroom shoes, Emily peeks. Kendall steals a glance before the elevator door dings. She’s looking back at him with remorse. Soon, Lawrence whispers something inexcusable in his ear and the board sees him visibly loose his composure. He leaves the floor’s eyeshot rattled in fury.
LONDON
10 AM
“It’s inappropriate. It’s a fitness, thing. It’s - it’s basically a heart rate monitor. It’s a fucking abortion.” A broad shoulder man squeals. “is that what you give your 80 year soon to be father in law? To your boss? As a gesture of obeisance? When you’re looking for promotion? Or is that, say, like giving him a colostomy bag and a viagra? The optics are fucking horrible.” He keeps rambling on to the redhead beside him. She takes no notice of the priced-up suit or her satin shirt shining in the harsh auburn sun. Two black Mercedes line up bedside them.
Shiv, instead, is focused on a text.
Shiv: you coming?
Em: maybe :/
“Tom. It’s fine. Yeah, my Dad doesn’t really like things.” She advises him to throw ten to fifteen grand at some posh shop that sells sea shells. She’s staring at her phone with pursed lips.
NEW YORK
1PM
“So, last call guys. We happy?” Kendall frantically looks around his team. Emily sits there looking uninterested at their long faces and sheets of robbery. Jess took an appointment, filing “wife needed for support” for her to be there. Back in the day, rose would’ve tainted her cheeks. Now, she only sits there. Stoic, unimpressed. She knows all too well that this was just another tactic for her to see him win. He’s bitter. And he hopes she knows.
Frank reassures him, ”If the committee play straight, we win. If they don’t, we go legal.”
“And we don’t want to just bump the number another point?” Young Alessandro, the investment banker looks towards Emily almost questioning the authority of her presence.
“You’ve already over ridden your Bali beach numbers. Although, I can give you an extra mil to demonstrate a knuckle fuck to Frank” Emily looks Kendall dead in the eye as if scolding a child. She crosses her legs and sits up straighter. Alessandro witnesses the change in power dynamics.
“You wanna call your Dad?” Alessandro offers.
Kendall looks like someone’s punched him in the nuts but he refuses to react. Emily only juts out her lips. She’s almost on the verge of enacting the scenes from their college days. Kendall gives her a so much so a threating look in response. His eyes dart to her mulberry pink lips. His mind fickle enough, churns him back to those same hot days with Emily on her knees.
“Do I want to call my Dad?” he glares at the board.
“No” he comprehends. “I don’t want to call my Dad.”
“Do you want to call your Dad?” he bites back.
“Does anyone want to call their Dad?” Silence surrounds the cascading white room except the timely tapping of Emily’s jimmy choos.
“Okay. No one wants to talk to thier Dad. So, let’s get in there, buy this fucking company and go top ten, shall we? I’m pushing the bid to 120. Okay?” Emily lets out a sigh in disapproval. Kendall pays no mind to her wandering gaze down his body. She wonders how she can put this in the mad bear’s plate without pissing him off.
1 AM
“What’s the number?” logan’s call disrupts Kendall in the midnight. Kendall did know, there was going to be consequences to raising the bid. He only hoped Emily had flower petaled logans fuck over shoes to bendable China. He dabs his forehead with a white tea cloth to soothe his nerves.
“I’m going to one twenty.” He intakes a sharp breath, eyes blown and sitting upright. he prays that his quaver of tone isn’t detectable. He fists his bedsheet into a stress ball. A minute goes by where you can hear the chaotic New York night pass by. He’s untouchable; how does the teen spirit bubblegum wrath seep in? He speaks further in a fever dream, “Good. Look are we still good for tomorrow? Today?”
“Uh-huh. Yeah.” Logan is tapping away on his mouse. Unfocused eyes cram in all the emails from the week.
“Cos it’s gonna get out there?” Kendall’s eyes twinkle. They perfectly reflect the times square brightness.
“We’ll announce.” Logan rolls his eyes. His right hand is reaching for the will in his drawer.
“Great, so I can pre-floating to like Frank and Emily? If I need to. Cos it’s getting soft-floated.” The line goes dead. Kendall closes his eyes. He’s breathing raggedly. Theres a voice in the back of his head telling him he’s going to fuck it up. He blinks. Hard.
authors note: engagement of any sort is greatly appreciated. will try to update the next part this week itself <3

rant incoming but thinking about how kendall and fran had so much potential to be explored in the seasons they were in (dino charge & jungle fury) only to be neglected by the writers and pushed into support roles legitimately makes me wanna crash out
the entirety of the energem finding operation in dino charge would not exist without kendall. she ran the museum, she gave half the team jobs, she created constant technology and upgrades in order to find more energems and aid the rangers in battle, and when she finally gains the chance to be a ranger, what does she get rewarded with? FURTHER shoving out of the spotlight and into a support role DESPITE being a ranger, and on top of that, NEVER gets an arc of her own!! wow!! no exploration of just how fucking tired she might be from having to deal with essentially the weight of the world (if not the UNIVERSE) on her shoulders on top of having to get a bunch of teenagers that work for her under control!! no exploration of how she even managed to form a bond with keeper and agree to find the energems in the first place!! how fucking amazing is that /s (even the villain that shows up halfway through the goddamn season gets more development than she does what the fuck, i love heckyl but come the FUCK on)
fran actually had SOME potential in the beginning of jf, because she was actually allowed to voice her frustrations (hell homegirl even quit at one point because of just how terribly the rangers were treating her, even if she got rehired in the same episode it's still something), and actually had an assertive, witty, spunky side to her that felt refreshing when paired with her otherwise sweet, shy, socially inept character. on top of this, she's allowed multiple badass moments despite not being a ranger (confronting a corrupted lily, staring down werewolf!rj, finding out who the rangers were on her own, etc.). and then.........it all comes crashing down from episode 19 onwards, and what does fran become?? the girl who likes dominic. yep!! love it when a super cool intelligent girl with so much potential to be explored OUTSIDE of supporting the men in her life (or exploring how being pushed into that role has an effect on her psyche) becomes reduced to nothing more than having a crush on a guy who's Wonder white bread personified!! fucking awesome!! fran doesn't get an episode or chunk of one exploring anything in depth about her but we get an entire episode about her tweaking over a guy or moments where she helps theo & lily get together, how fucking brilliant
and don't give me some bullshit about how kendall and fran aren't meant to have as much emphasis as the other characters because claire blackwelder and sarah thomson got credited as main characters from day fucking one. if they were able to get main character credits they should've been handled with just as much emphasis as the others in their respective casts, ESPECIALLY due to how integral they were to keeping their teams afloat. fran doesn't even get a goddamn last name despite having been there since ep 1 ffs i made a whole tag about that
I'm not even asking for much, I just want my girls to have an arc and development + episodes to themselves PLEASE
#i have a tendency to get attached to nerdy socially inept brunettes constantly pushed into support roles#this shit makes me so upset#+ them having the most amazing looking office siren/nerdy y2k cutesy fashion senses only to get pushed into the same 2 fits has me seething#kendall and fran i will always love and acknowledge you even if no one else behind the writers team will#god fran could literally marry dom for all i care i just want the first half of jf's fran back she was so cool#and kendall was literally immaculate especially as a ranger only for her developmentally to go NOWHERE#kendall morgan#power rangers dino charge#power rangers dino super charge#prdc#fran jungle fury#fran#(still mad she doesn't have a canon last name)#power rangers jungle fury#prjf#should not be feeling this way about a kids' show but hey i've been here for over a decade tf am i gonna do about it

Here’s my August 2023 wrap up! Reviews under the cut. Also, I truly don’t understand how I wound up reading so many vampire-themed books this month! I don’t find vampires particularly interesting, this was just how my holds on books from the library shook out.
From Blood and Ash by Jennifer M. Armentrout | Fantasy, New Adult, Romance
⭐⭐
Summary: Poppy is the Maiden, a high-ranking position of power meant to usher in a new era of prosperity after she completes the mysterious “Ascension.” But as the Ascension grows nearer, her doubts begin to multiply. Her own misgivings paired with civil unrest cause her to question everything she knows. Also, one of her bodyguards is dreamy.
Thoughts: The worldbuilding was subpar to bad and the characters were all unlikable. The big twist was interesting, but not worth the slog it was to get there. Maybe I’m being too harsh, but I don’t understand why there are so freaking many New Adult Fantasy Romance books out these days. Of course, I would love to stumble upon a new Six of Crows or The Cruel Prince. But the fact is, not every author is skilled enough to write the new Grishaverse. I know a lot of people loved this book, but it just wasn’t it for me.
The Trap by Catherine Ryan Howard | Thriller, Mystery, Crime, Suspense
⭐⭐⭐ and 1/2
Summary: Lucy’s sister, Nicki, has been missing ever since she walked out of a Dublin bar late one night without a word to her friends. Angela is the Irish equivalent of a police dispatcher for the Missing Persons Unit who longs to be a detective herself. An unnamed man drives through the Irish countryside as he enumerates his crimes to the woman in his backseat, his latest victim. When Angela makes an alarming discovery, she sets a series of events into motion that changes the hunt for the serial killer plaguing Ireland and might just crack the case.
Thoughts: This was exceptionally entertaining, though the beginning was a bit slow. The commentary of what it’s like to be a woman in a precarious situation was spot-on, though it didn’t add anything new to the conversation. What I really enjoyed about this book was that it didn’t feel ghoulish, as crime novels often do since True Crime became so popular.
Salt & Storm by Kendall Kulper | Young Adult, Witches, Historical Fiction, Mother and Daughter Relationships, Fantasy, Romance
⭐⭐⭐
Summary: Avery Roe is descended from a long line of witches, all of whom resided on Prince Island, Massachusetts, giving up something unimaginable in order to obtain their magic, which they then use to protect the whalers at sea. But Avery’s mother saw the price that had to be paid in order to become the island’s witch and chose, instead, to attempt to make a life in Victorian society. Avery struggles against her mother’s rules, longing to go to her grandmother and learn the spells she needs to become the next island’s witch. But when Avery has a prophetic dream that shows her she will be murdered, suddenly Avery’s struggles become urgent.
Thoughts: This book had extraordinary prose and fantastic descriptions. Kulper masterfully depicted a tense relationship between mother and daughter. However, the price that is so built up that must be paid in order to obtain one’s magic was anticlimactic. I was, “That’s all?”
Naramauke by Lily Sparks | Young Adult, Companion Novella, Horror, Romance, Contemporary
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Summary: Erik’s version of events from the novel Teen Killers Club by Lily Sparks.
Thoughts: This novella gave readers of the Teen Killers Club series (final installment out in October) a glimpse into the motivations of characters that we didn’t get to see from Signal’s perspective. Definitely hyped me up for Teen Killers at Large.
Dark Water Daughter by H.M. Long | Fantasy, Pirates, Romance, Magic
⭐⭐⭐
Summary: A swashbuckling fantasy set among pirates, tree spirits, and mages alike. Mary Firth is a Stormsinger: someone who can control the winds and weather with a song. She has kept her ability a secret all her life for her own safety, but when she is mistaken as a highwayman and brought to the noose, she has no choice but to sing herself out of the situation. Now, pirates and privateers are after her for her unique ability to sail ships wherever they need to go. But that’s not all they’re after.
Thoughts: While well-written and entertaining at times, I found myself at sea (pun not intended) for a lot of this. I think this type of story just wasn’t for me, and it isn’t going to be something I remember reading six months from now.
How to Bite Your Neighbor and Win a Wager by D.N. Bryn | M M Romance, Vampires, Contemporary, New Adult
⭐
Summary: Wes is a recent college graduate mourning the sudden disappearance of his beloved mother. Vincent is a starving, houseless vampire whose support system was yanked away from him when he was turned by accident during his freshman year of college. Together, they explore a milquetoast attraction to one another as Vincent experiences a veritable barrage of hate crimes while Wes stands insipidly by. Also, there are entire passages lifted from The Song of Achilles and reworded so it’s not technically plagiarism.
Thoughts: This was hot, wet garbage. It reads like fanfiction written by the cringiest theater kid you ever had the displeasure of meeting in high school. The dialogue reminds one of how young teenagers speak, not how adults interact with one another. Case in point: a side character asks Wes if Vincent makes him, “tingly in [his] pingly.” He proceeds to refer to his penis as his “pingly” for the rest of the novel. I can’t make this shit up. And while the plot was clearly too ambitious of a concept for the skill level of the author, I am still disappointed with the result of this whole pharmaceutical conspiracy.
Mister Magic by Kiersten White | Horror, Mystery, Supernatural, Contemporary
⭐⭐⭐
Summary: Everyone remembers their favorite childhood television show, Mister Magic. What no one can agree on is what Mister Magic looked like. Unlike most shows from the early 90s, it’s impossible to find recordings of the episodes, even in the furthest reaches of the internet. But in an era where nostalgia is extremely profitable, someone gets the idea to have a reunion of the cast of the show in the form of a podcast. Val is 38 and lives on a ranch in Idaho. She has no memories of her time before she and her father arrived at the ranch covered in fresh burn scars at the age of eight. But when three men show up to her father’s funeral, she feels like she’s met them before. And when they tell her that her mother is alive and they all share a past, she has no choice but to return to the place where Mister Magic was filmed in search of answers.
Thoughts: The opening of this book is stunning. It draws the reader in, playing on that weird Mandela Effect we all have about media from our own childhoods. However, as the story progresses, things become more and more surreal, to the point where I wasn’t sure I was following what exactly was going on. It was so abstract that I found myself getting frustrated and bored.
Rent to Be by Sonia Hartl | Romance, Contemporary, New Adult
⭐⭐⭐
NOTE: I read an ARC.
Summary: Isla Jane is an elder zoomer (not a millennial, as the book blurbs will have to believe) who was, like many of us post-college twentysomethings, one unforeseen expense away from financial disaster. That expense, for her, came in the form of a broken transmission, which caused her to miss rent payments, which caused her to get kicked out by her roommates. Thus kicks off Isla’s month-long struggle to keep her head above water while she sleeps under her desk at work, housesits, and crashes on her brother’s couch, all while her brother’s handsome best friend stands by, sometimes teasing her but most of the time supporting her.
Thoughts: Hartl discusses the economic woes all new adults face with startling accuracy (although I’m not sure why Isla didn’t go to a food rescue if she was so food-insecure). However, Isla’s introduction in the story is frankly a lot, and for a few chapters, I was siding with her roommates. I’ve had roommates of my own neglect to pay their share of rent and neglect to discuss it with me, and believe me, I was not happy when the landlord showed up wondering where his $500-odd dollars were. Despite the initial bad taste in my mouth, I did grow to like Isla and sympathize with her interpersonal problems with her parents: Boundaries matter. And I think Cade acted as a great foil in that regard. Just because someone had it worse than Isla, that doesn’t mean Isla isn’t allowed to be hurt by her parent’s thoughtlessness. Overall, a good portrayal of young millennial/elder zoomer financial struggles with a cute romance.
In Nightfall by Suzanne Young | Urban Fantasy, Horror, Contemporary, Young Adult, Vampires, Reimagining, Supernatural
⭐⭐
Summary: In this reimagining of the 1987 film The Lost Boys, a pair of siblings visit their father’s hometown in the wake of their parent’s divorce. While Marco immediately falls in love with the stunning and stunningly cool Minnow, our heroine, Theo, isn’t so enamored. Things get stranger and stranger as their visit progresses, until it’s clear that there’s something wrong with this town--and it’s gotten its claws into Marco.
Thoughts: This was maybe ten to fifteen chapters too long. The paperback is nearly 400 pages and if I’m being honest, a YA vampire thriller with no symbolism/philosophy to speak of has no business being so tedious and long. I had to force myself through certain parts. It had the potential to be really fun and creepy if an editor had gone through it with some hedge clippers. Instead, it was boring. Amazing cover though.
Tilly in Technicolor by Mazey Eddings | Romance, Young Adult, Contemporary, Mental Health, Travel, Humor
⭐⭐⭐
NOTE: I read an ARC.
Summary: Tilly just graduated high school by the skin of her teeth thanks to her ADHD making it impossible to focus in a traditional classroom setting. Oliver, also neurodivergent, runs a successful Instagram page utilizing Pantone’s colors to relate to the world around him and start a dialogue about color theory. Both have spots as summer interns for a startup nail polish company, where they traverse falling in love in a world that wasn’t made for your brain chemistry.
Thoughts: Despite its serious subject matter, I found Tilly in Technicolor to be both heartfelt and wildly funny. The dialogue was age-appropriate for a YA book without feeling like an adult was poorly imitating how kids talk, and the characters were all flawed from the jump without seeming unlikeable. I did, however, find myself rolling my eyes at the inevitable Final Act Breakup, though that was resolved in pretty short order.
The Last Girls Standing by Jennifer Dugan | Horror, LGBT, Mystery, Young Adult
⭐
Summary: Sloan and Cherry are the only two girls who survived a horrific mass-murder. Now, as Sloan is trying to recover her memories, she grows more and more certain that Cherry is gaslighting her about what really happened that night.
Thoughts: I was expecting a fun slasher book. What I got was two dysfunctional lesbians screaming at each for 75% of the book. I was like, Just break up already! You two are so toxic to one another! I was annoyed at how misleading the cover and blurbs on this book were.
Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas | Historical Fiction, Horror, Vampires, Vaqueros, Gothic, Romance
⭐⭐⭐
Summary: After a gruesome mauling by a gray, eyeless, humanoid monster, Néstor believes his childhood sweetheart, Nena, to be dead. In the wake of the attack, he flees the ranch he was raised on and spends the next nine years breaking horses by day and chasing Nena’s ghost away with copious amounts of alcohol and meaningless sex by night. But when he is called back to the ranch after the Texans declare war on Mexico, he discovers that Nena survived the attack, and she is furious that he left her without so much as a word. An accomplished healer, Nena accompanies her father’s battalion to war, where she and Néstor are separated from everyone else. Soon, she and Néstor learn that there is more to be scared of than just the Yanquís trying to take their land.
Thoughts: At first, I found this to be an excellent, immersive read that had me feeling Néstor’s grief and Nena’s anger. It transported me to mid-1800s Northern Mexico. As the story wore on, I found the interpersonal conflict to be deeply annoying. In his inner monologue, Néstor insists he loves Nena. Yet when the two fight, he hits below the belt, casting aspersions on her due to imagined slights and even blaming her for being complicit to the exploitation of the working class. Like, Dude. She’s an unmarried woman during the Victorian era and there are vampires attacking you. I’m all for bringing down capitalism but maybe some of your ire is a little misplaced. They both whine an exceeding amount throughout the story about their relationship.
Ashes in the Snow by Oriana Ramuno | Historical Fiction, World War II, Crime, Holocaust, Nazi Germany, Murder Mystery
⭐⭐⭐
Note: I read an ARC
Summary: The year is 1943 and Detective Hugo Fischer, accomplished criminologist, is sent to Auschwitz to investigate the mysterious death of a high-ranking SS officer. A young twin and current favorite of the infamous Josef Mengele, eight-year-old Gioele is the one who discovered the body. The boy strikes a deal with the detective: he will provide information if Hugo locates his parents.
Thoughts: This novel opens up with a punch to the face: Detective Hugo Fischer is standing on the train platform in front of Auschwitz, waiting to be escorted to the crime scene. From there, he watches as an SS officer rips a baby from her mother’s arms and stomps her to death. After witnessing such a thing, one would think that Hugo might not be shocked at the horror that awaits him inside the camp. Yet it seems as though every injustice shocks him anew. I’m like, Hugo, you just saw a man murder a baby in front of her mother and you’re shocked that the Nazis are performing human experimentation? Come on. But Hugo has, since the Nazi party seized power, kept his head down in order to survive, which is why he wears the swastika on his jacket and pretends his bad leg was the result of polio and not a degenerative disease. And while the book seemed to be leaning quite hard on Hannah Arendt’s idea of the banality of evil, there is no denying that what went on at Auschwitz was anything but banal. While it was an engrossing read, I found myself disliking all of the characters except Gioele, because I don’t believe the line of reasoning that plenty of Nazis were doing their jobs because execution was the only other option. We even learn that Hugo had job offers all over the world but chose to stay in Berlin. It was difficult sympathizing with a character who, when we meet him, witnessed the brutal murder of a baby girl without uttering so much as a word.
Eventide by Sarah Goodman | Historical Fiction, Young Adult, Fantasy, Horror, Magic
⭐⭐
Summary: When Verity and Lilah’s father is committed to an asylum after the death of their mother, the two sisters find themselves on an orphan train heading from New York City to the small town of Wheeler, Arkansas. When adorable, 11-year-old Lilah is adopted immediately and there are no offers made on taciturn, 17-year-old Verity, Verity must take on an indenture to stay close to her beloved sister. But Wheeler is an odd town with strange magic in its bones and not everyone is as they seem, especially the mild-mannered schoolteacher who adopted Lilah.
Thoughts: I really do not like the sort of story where something is obviously happening and everyone around the protagonist doesn’t believe them. At least Verity’s friends and the one social worker believed her. I suppose I found myself frustrated that Verity showed up to a town and had to pay for the sins of her parents. What a parent does shouldn’t be the child’s burden to bear and the ending wasn’t fair.
The Lady Rogue by Jenn Bennet | Young Adult, Historical Fiction, Adventure
⭐⭐⭐
Summary: Theodora Fox lives on the sidelines of her father’s Indiana Jones-esque treasure hunting career, staying behind at hotels with governesses and tutors as he and Huck Gallager--her ex-boyfriend and father’s apprentice of sorts--go on adventures. After Theo’s tutor absconds with all of her money, leaving Theo in a foreign city with no resources, the last person she wants to see is Huck Gallagher, who left in the middle of the night over a year ago without so much as a word. But when he tells her he believes her father to be in trouble, she has no choice but to set her feelings aside and team up with her former love to come to his rescue.
Thoughts: I really, really enjoyed the adventure side of this book. It was a fun romp through the Carpathian Mountains. The personal conflict between Huck and Theo, however, felt half-baked. It needed to be fleshed out a little more. And while the two seemed to agree that Fox (Theo’s father) was the root cause of their problems, that was never explored in any satisfying way. It felt like the author was rushing the ending rather than giving these characters catharsis after they’d been badly hurt by someone they both considered a parental figure.
With a Kiss We Die by L. R. Dorn | Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Contemporary
⭐⭐⭐
Summary: Ryanna Raines is an investigative journalist and host of the hit true-crime podcast known as, “The Raines Report.” Before landing on a subject for her sixth season, she receives an intriguing message on her tip line from a 22-year-old theater student from USCB whose parents were found murdered in their San Diego home. He knows that the police are days away from charging both him and his 18-year-old girlfriend with murder and he wants Raines to fly to California and give the young students a chance to tell their side of the story and proclaim their innocence.
Thoughts: At first, I found this read to be deeply absorbing. I liked the podcast-y format (though I haven’t listened to a podcast in years, I can still appreciate the unique approach to storytelling). But as the story wore on, it became clear that there would be no big twists or interesting discoveries. It was anticlimactic and perhaps that was the point as the book was a fictional lens with which to look at the true crime genre. Still, I found myself unsatisfied with the lack of mystery in this alleged mystery novel.
Cackle by Rachel Harrison | Horror, Fantasy, Witches, Contemporary
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Summary: Annie Crane, suffering from a devastating breakup, has no choice but to move out of her expensive NYC apartment she shared with her now-ex and take a job teaching upstate. In the small, picturesque village of Rowan, Annie meets Sophie and begins a life-altering transformation.
Thoughts: This was honestly a really funny read. I’ve read another book by this author that was equally as funny, so I expected that. However, I thought the plot could stand to be a little more developed and I would have liked it to be a little darker.
Jackal by Erin E. Adams | Horror, Race, Contemporary, Thriller, Black Horror, Supernatural
⭐⭐⭐
Summary: Liz Rocher grew up in the Rust Belt town of Johnstown, PA. A black girl in an affluent, predominantly white community, she struggled to fit in with her classmates throughout her childhood, and when she left the small town for New York City, it was for good. When her best friend announces she’s getting married, though, Liz sucks it up and returns to her hometown in order to be a bridesmaid and to visit her best friend’s nine-year-old daughter (her goddaughter), Caroline, who herself is half black. At the wedding, though, Caroline goes missing. This starts Liz down a path of discovery: black girls go missing every June in this little, idyllic town.
Thoughts: While this was an engrossing read, I can’t help but feel like it would have been more effective as a screenplay/movie. And while the novel subverted plenty of tropes, it was still in the tired genre of “woman with a substance abuse problem returns to hometown and stumbles upon a murderer.”
My Roommate is a Vampire by Jenna Levine | Contemporary, Romance, Comedy, Vampires
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Summary: Chicago-based artist Cassie Greenberg is shocked to see a Craigslist apartment listed for only $200 a month. Financially desperate, she decides to meet her potential roommate, fully expecting to encounter a complete weirdo or worse. Well, her roommate is a weirdo: he’s wildly handsome, only comes out at night, never seems to cook or eat, and has a tenuous understanding of technology at best. When Cassie finds blood bags in the fridge, the pieces come together in her mind: her roommate is a vampire.
Thoughts: This was a super funny read. While I’d prefer the plot to be a little more developed, it was fun and campy and I laughed out loud more than once. Definitely didn’t take itself too seriously and I’d recommend it as a palate cleanser.
Together We Rot by Skyla Arndt | Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance, Mystery, Horror, Cults
⭐⭐
Summary: Wil and Elwood were best friends until her mom went missing last year. Then Wil finds herself being gaslighted by the local police and begins noticing all the deeply strange rituals of the local church. Worse, she’s sure she has seen members of the church wearing her mother’s jewelry. Elwood’s father is the preacher and leader of the strange church, and when Wil confronts Elwood, he chooses believing his family over believing her. That is, until he overhears his father speaking about human sacrifice to the local sheriff and realizes he must run for his life.
Thoughts: I thought the prose was overly-flowery and Elwood’s abrupt shift from steadfastly believing his family of being innocent to immediately believing them to be murderers was strange to say the least. He doesn’t even take the time to question what he overheard. He just runs away.

Welcome to the first ever Succession Dog Show
Contestants have been split into seven groups for the first of three rounds. The second round will have the same groups, with just the top three from the first round. Then the winner of each group will move on to the final round‚ which will also include special guest Mondale Roy. Also, Marcia is the judge because <3 and I say so.
In each group there are five succession characters plus three more normal dogs because I didn’t think five was enough and also I think it’s funny that it’s a possibility that none of the characters make it to the final round.
These polls all will last 1 week‚ closing and opening on Sundays.

Books 2024.
Here are the books I've read this year.
The romantic comedies that I still can't believe they were published.
Mr. Wrong Number by Lynn Painter.
Happily ever after by Lynn Painter.
Both books, if I could give them negative stars, I would.
Not like the movies. Kelly Winfrey.
The effort for flawed characters is loable, but that's about it.
One-star romance. Laura Hankin.
One star indeed. The narrator is shrill, and that is a term that as a staunch feminist, I never use in a negative connotation. Until I read this book.
The Fiancé Dilemma. Elena Armas.
I thought the obsession US romcom book clubs have on this author was because she was a good writer. I was wrong. by god, was I wrong.
Kissing Tolstoy. Penny Reid (Novella).
I was happy to see a writer debunking this holy male writer in order to explain a very inappropiate relationship between a professor (a russian, very white, very controlling man) and a student (who loses all agency in this short book). The result is a red flag book.
Love hacked. Penny Reid.
Again, the red flags! So many red flags!!
Ten ways to seduce your boyfriend. Penny Reid.
Right on cue. Falon Ballard.
Till heist do us part. Sara Desai.
Unnecessarily long, with a confusing plot and characters who dilute and are so weak I almost stab my eyes with a fork.
It happened one summer. Tessa Bailey.
The clocky app book section of the internet will tell you this is hot and steamy. I will tell you that the scene where they have sex in a hospital is not only inappropiate (of all the damn places, the place where sick people go to?!), it's just...ew.
To woo and to wed. Martina Writers.
Not only is this book terrible, it's a blatant copy of Bridgerton with a very lazy, terrible approach to Austen.
Lush Lives. Vanessa Lyon.
I never understood the plot of the book nor the characters. Yay for disabled queer love, but it felt I was ticking a list on diversity.
Books that I forgot I'd read until I check my reading apps (I Am Angry I Read Some Of Them).
The Rosie Project. Graeme Simsion.
Do not let men write romcoms.
The Shaadi set-up. Lilie Vale.
I'm not of indian descent, but I'd take offense if I were.
Love and other flights delays (compilation, novella). Denise Williams.
Token. Beverly Kendall.
A crown of ivy and glass. Claire Legrand.
I am an adult person who no longer hates read. Yet, I found myself despising this book so much that the hate lead me to pre-order the following book in this series.
The wedding date. Jazmine Guilroy.
If this author ever does a refund, I'd never accept it because no money can ever give me back the hours I wasted reading this.
The Bridgerton series because come on, this is me.
An offer from a gentleman.
The offer! The cinderella plot and then the attempt to make it a plot twist and failing! I am here for this and I can't wait for the tv series.
To sir Philip, with love.
Eloise, I don't think we was ready for this. She became a therapist, a savior, and a mom in like 3 days. She also lost her agency, which was barely noticeable in the books and I am so ready for the season. This is a fantastic hot mess.
Good romcoms only women and queer people will enjoy.
The roomate fiasco and The fake boyfriend fiasco. Both by Talia Hibbert.
Long live this amazing author who gives us red flags, beige flags, sex toys, consensual relationships, fucked up pasts, therapy and redemption.
Say you'll be mine. Naina Kumar.
The ending felt extremely rushed, but the book is sweet and funny. What a delightful read.
Seven days in june. Tia Williams.
The summer of everything. Julian Winters.
Business Casual. B.K. Borison.
Do you take this man. Denise Williams.
Just like you. Nick Hornby.
Fantastic reads that made me laugh and weep and I couldn't stop reading until I was done.
Words in deep blue. Cath Crowley.
The Dating plan. Sara Desai.
The marriage game. Sara Desai.
Summer romance. Annabel Monaghan.
Past, present, future. Rachel Lynn Salomon.
What a lovely conclusion to a book that I think didn't need a sequel. It's just wonderful reading for a YA audience.
The singles table. Sara Desai.
The thing is this book isn't bad, it's just that the characters needed a few pages to discuss therapy. Like, I was worried about fictional people's mental health.
Technically yours. Denise Williams.
I liked it so much I'll probably read it again.
The Holy Crap This Is So Good books.
We could be so good. Cat Sebastian.
The most beautiful love story I've read in a while. I was invested. I want to believe this isn't just fiction. Queer love!
Funny Story. Emily Henry.
The chokehold Henry has on us is deep and wonderful. Never formulaic, never a dull moment.
Ariadna. Jennifer Saint.
I didn't think a feminist re-telling of one the best greek mytholgy female characters could be so compelling, so human and so stunning.
Hanh Khan Carries On. Uzma Jalaluddin.
This book solidified my belief Jalaluddin is one of the best contemporary romcom writers.
Joan is Okay. Weike Wang.
One of the best books I've read in the past decade of my life. What a writer, what a book, what a heartbreaking story. The pace can feel slow but it's necessary, it's important.
The Rachel Incident. Caroline O'Donough.
Another excellent, remarkable and incredibly joyous book. O'Donough deserves all the praise, because this debut novel really is a punch. Ireland is producing great writers and I'm so glad I stumbled upon those authors.
How to fail at flirting. Denise Williams.
This book is not an award winning book, but it's not about that. I love how she built those characters, how she made the lead find her voice, to find a path for herself, to give herself the chance to be compassionate with herself, to give herself grace and peace, and to trust the world, that is dark and terrible but you still can find good things in it. It's a beautiful book on survival and love.
The Fantasy Section.
Fire and Blood. George R.R. Martin.
I was there for the dragons and I wept for the dragons only.
The Familiar. Leigh Bardugo.
I didn't think Bardugo could write a good book and she slapped me. She shut me up. She really is a fantastic author, who is capable of writing one of the most exciting, magical, heartbreaking and wild books I've read in years. Also, this book is set in Spain! it has spells that I grew up hearing. The research for this book is amazing and it shows. And the love story is just great, they have their revenge and it is fantastic.
A venom dark and sweet. Judy I. Lin.
I knew I needed to wait to read this book because the cover looked promising. It delivered so much more, just so much more. The plot moves nicely, the magic is so delicate and simple, the characters sometimes lose a bit of punch, but overall, I loved reading this book. I just love when a fantasy book is capable to absorb my attention and I can't do anything but read the book. I can't wait to read more from Lin, honestly.
A song of Ash and Moonlight. Claire Legrand.
How is it possible that the same author who wrote that terrible and annoying ass book wrote this one? Whatever Legrand did, I don't care, I just want her to keep writing stories that are human and flawed and filled with mystic, fantasy, betrayal, plot twists and love. This book was an obsessive read, I inhaled it. It's already one of my favorite fantasy books, with Lin and Samantha Shannon's Priory.
Fantastic books I read that were not e-books.
A very large expanse of sea. Tahereh Mafi.
If I could give this author the thanks for writing a book that made my sad mind breath and rest, I could. It's a YA book but I found myself reflected in the lead character: her love for music, her distrust of the world, her disappointment and heartbreak over people who insists on hating something they don't understand. One of the best books I've ever read.
The Island of Missing Trees. Elif Shafak.
I started this book and I was very confused by it. I started I think earlier this year and I put it away. Then, in late november I picked it up and it was worth it. I cried, and I couldn't help but think in my aunt and how much she would've loved this book and this author.
Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow. Gabrielle Zevin.
Very Confusing Books.
Prep. Curtis Sittenfeld.
I don't have a rating in this book in my good reads. I just don't know still how I feel about this- it's Sittenfeld's debut novel but it's very different from what I read so far from her. It was a difficult read.
Nothing serious. Emma Medrano.
This book has a story that is difficult to swallow and process. A good debut novel, a very good writer. But it's a difficult, confusing book.
How to read now. Elaine Castillo.
Some of the essays here were too long. It's not a pop culture read and it really is a very academic writing that exists in pop culture. It's very well written, has some really good discussion points, but some things needed editing, as in: just get to the point of what you're saying.
Norah Ephron: The last interview and other conversations.
I love Norah Ephron but some things made me wince and others just let me plain right confused.
Yo soy el monstruo que os habla. Paul B. Preciado.
Why did Preciado gave this speechh? It's great but also...why?
Books I haven't finished because reading is not a competition (and I'm never winning).
Ghosts. Dolly Alderton.
Gengis Khan and the making of the modern world. Jack Weatherford.
Heir. Sabaa Tahir.
Devotions. Mary Oliver.
71 poemas. Emily Dickinson.
There's always this year. On basketball and ascension. Hanif Abourragib.
Doce Césares. Mary Beard.
Wolf Hall. Hilary Mantel.
La primera cruzada. Peter Frankopan.
Historia Económica de Colombia. José A. Ocampo (editor).
Disorientation. Elaine Hsieh Chou.
Los papeles de Afganistán. Una historia secreta de la guerra. Craig Whitlock.
Opinions. Roxane Gay.
Green dot. Madeleine Gray.
Bad Taste. Nathalie Olah.

Some fun facts: - This list is not quite in order of when the first usages of these names appeared, but it's pretty close. - Assuming I caught everything and did the math correctly, Trent's daughter has been mentioned by name in 192 fics! For reference, Trent has been tagged as a character in 395 and does not actually appear in some of those, so she's really named in over 49% of the fics he's in. - Of the approximately 77(!) names used, ~33 have been used in multiple fics (including several series), and ~21 of those have been used by multiple different authors. - Seraphina and Georgie are tied for most usages (18 each) but when it comes to usages by the most authors, Seraphina (probably unsurprisingly, given how many people have been inspired by a kind of dwell and welcome) wins in a landslide with 15.
EDIT March 14 2023 I don't feel like updating the math but here are the new names that have been used since I originally posted this:
Ivy
Rosa
Clara
Eliora Eli Asher (nonbinary in this one)
Persephone
Agatha
Sadia
Lottie [could be a nickname for Charlotte (already on the list) but not necessarily and not clarified as such]
Mira
Karime
Lydia
Billie Rose
One more day to season 3, can't wait to see if we get a confirmed name! Either way, it's been fun <3
EDIT April/May 2023 to add:
Isadora
Molly
Darla
Patricia/Trish
Amaya
Ella
Meg/Margaret
Charlie [again I'm assuming this is a nickname for Charlotte but that's not stated]
Eliza [Could be standalone name or could be nickname for Elizabeth]
Carmilla/Millie
Annie [Could be a nickname for a number of other names. EDIT: One of the two fics using this name just revealed it's a nickname for Cordelia Annabel. Not sure how to count this tbh.]
Frances
Emi
Kara
Ingrid
Astrid
Beth [again this is probably a nickname for Elizabeth]
Claire
Maya
Cindy
Harriet
EDIT after the finale aired (this info also added to a reblog):
Well, it seems we're not getting a canon name! I guess she's our daughter now. I haven't decided whether I'm going to maintain this list going forward (though for my own sanity I'm leaning towards no) but at least it's fully up to date as of 7:30 pm est today (May 31, 2023).
Some "final" statistics: The numbers aren’t perfect, because there were a few names I grouped together and probably should have counted separately, and a few names I counted separately and probably should have grouped together, and those may or may not have balanced out, but keeping that in mind, about 110 names were used! About 49 were used in multiple fics (including individual installments in several series) and about 35 of those were used by multiple authors. Trent’s daughter has been mentioned by name in about 298 fics by 149 authors. This includes works in which she’s mentioned but doesn’t show up as a character, but doesn’t account for works in which her existence is mentioned but not by name. Fun fact, about 21 new names were used just while season three was airing!
#yes I've read all of the tedtrent fic in existence no I'm not ok#Ted Lasso#Trent Crimm#Trent Crimm's daughter#this is one of those moments you really hope your 'read more' works lmao#I don't know why I did this. I hope people find it interesting? it's kind of fun seeing the kinds of names we've chosen#I guess you could also use it as a list of actual baby name suggestions hahaha#most popular

The point about teen dramas and the problem with reality ensuing past high school got me thinking… In the context of Gossip Girl, what do you think would have been more plausible/realistic post-high school storylines for the characters? Because obviously in the OG show things got fucking WILD lmao. I do wonder if without the writers strike/the shift towards Chuck/Chair it might have been possible to keep things at least tonally consistent with season one post-high school, or if it’s something they would have struggled with anyway. I do feel like it’s less implausible for the characters to have more of their dreams fulfilled/better life outcomes on a show like Gossip Girl if only because of the extreme wealth inherent to the premise, but they definitely stretched the pretty generous suspension of disbelief I was already giving them lol
Oh this is a great ask!
First of all, yes I agree, the elite kids of the Upper East Side are going to have a better chance at their dreams then the lower/middle class kids of Lima, Ohio. (That being said, you're right, GG still pushed it far beyond any rational suspension of disbelief)
-Okay, let's say Bart still dies. Chuck inheriting his shares - sure, totally plausible. Chuck getting to run the company at 18? Fuck no! Chuck would have to go to undergrad and probably have to get a MBA as well, and then work his way up the C-suite a la Kendall Roy before finally getting the keys to the castle in his 30s or so.
-Blair also would have to complete college (and she is so the type to go to grad school too let's be real) before landing any sort of dream job she would want. I can definitely see her working her way up the ladder at Vogue and taking over for Anna Wintour one day, but that would take years, if not decades of work.
-As followers of the blog know, Spectator!Nate is not my Nate! It's not even just about him getting handed a newspaper at 20, the Nate of s1-4 had no interest in journalism whatsoever or wearing a suit every day of his life. Anyway, I could see a world where Nate just kinda coasts through college, and then lives off his trust fund or something while he figures out what he actually wants to do. (I am partial to social worker!Nate but I do think it would take him a lot of character development that the show would be uninterested in doing to get him to that point).
-I mean this is in s1, but Dan getting published in the New Yorker at 16? Come on now. Dan getting a book published at 20 somehow without his consent? Also, come on now. I can see Dan completing undergrad then getting his MFA, and then getting a literary agent in his mid-20s or so, through Lily connections or professor connections or something.
-While Serena actually somehow has the most realistic path of all of them (production assisting /publicity don't require college degrees, plus Serena already had connections and the It Girl status), I still think she is someone who four years of college would do a lot of good. So I would have her graduate college first, before then moving out to LA and getting that PA job, and working her way up the ladder to producer or something that way.
Basically, I think they should've stuck with the college storylines! And, yeah, I think a big reason of why they didn't is because of Chuck and his mainpain and his whole "I'm gonna be a businessman at 18" nonsense.

for some reason tumblr won't let me reply to comments but give me the kenstew thoroughbreds ideas 🤲🏼🤲🏼
YES YES YES i literally don't know why i'm just seeing this a month late but. yes.
key differences: there's the dynamic of uneven racial status between stewy and kendall that isn't present in thoroughbreds + i think amanda lacks(??? this is arguable) the level of self-preservation that is key to stewy's character.
i don't think stewy as he is in the show would be willing to take the fall if kendall actually killed logan. but a younger stewy? and a metaphorical killing? perhaps.
one of my favorite parts of thoroughbreds is that early scene when amanda is over at lily's house and they're watching a movie and mark (after establishing that lily's mom is out of the house) is trying to coerce lily into going upstairs (the deliberate ambiguity of that interaction is HAUNTING) and amanda deftly shuts him down in a master class in passive aggressive rich new englander dialogue
one of my favorite parts of succession is how stewy so effectively and entertainingly (to the audience) puts on a show of being unthreatened by logan (favorite line from s3: "i feel like i'm taking a shit in the guggenheim, y'all"). i think that show is a lot more poignant if you read him as actually being a bit scared of logan, deep down (see: him in s1 making kendall deliver the letter).
thinking about what it would mean to read amanda as actually being intimidated by mark, in that first scene, and standing up to protect lily anyways.
thinking about how amanda and stewy are both seen as the strong counterpart to lily and kendall, who are berated by their respective parents for being spoiled and incapable, and yet in the end lily and kendall are the ones who end up actually taking lives.
thinking about rich kids with blood on their hands and their knights in shining armor??? idk the two just feel very thematically connected
#thank you for giving me an opportunity to pull at these threads!!!#thoroughbreds#succession#kendall roy#stewy hosseini#ask
