Yes, my apologies that I cannot be more forthcoming with information. There is a chance that in explaining it, I will bring it into existence. Perhaps I can tell you the very end result, as I am already lost.

I, and many others like me, used to be human. A great tragedy caused us to lose our SOULs in pursuit of what we believed to be a noble objective. We were trying to save someone very dear to us, and when that proved impossible, we hoped that we could at least ease their suffering through death. Even that, though... well, it was as much a failure as everything else.
