had an epiphany recently abt asahi azumane and mitsuya takashi being colleagues apprenticing or w/ever with some designer and theres a rumor that one of them used to be in a gang but everyone assumes the wrong one KJSADHBFG

takashi starts the job a day late. he’d been embarrassed when he asked for the first day off—it’s not professional, not in the slightest—but his supervisor is understanding when he explains it’s for his little sister’s graduation. he’s diligent when his real first day comes along, intent on proving his dedication, listening adamantly for the first half of the day as he’s introduced to the whole team and shown around the office. it’s not until lunchtime that he starts to feel mostly oriented and his supervisor lets him go.

“your partner’s another student.” she gestures towards a table, where a man his age sits with his head down while another person perches on the top with legs crossed, looking intently at a camera while talking to him. “he knows to expect you, it would’ve been nice to have yesterday for you two to get to know each other but i’ll let you go for lunch now so you can go introduce yourself.”

so he does as recommended, approaching the pair of you with his bento in hand. you look up as he comes close, waving with the camera itself. the man doesn’t lift his head.

“heya! you’re the other apprentice, right?”

takashi nods, taking an empty seat.

“bold choice.” your friendly grin does little to discourage him as you return your attention to your camera. in fact your words seem to impact the man he assumes is his new partner more—he groans, rolling his head on the table and huffing in annoyance. it doesn’t stop you from continuing with a snicker. “you’ll get yourself blacklisted. azumane’s a gangster, you know.”

“stop,” he groans into the desk, making you all-out cackle.

“aw, come off it, they’re spreading it around already so he’s bound to find out soon enough, better to rip the band-aid off now. don’t go telling anyone else, though, newbie. he’ll threaten you if you do.”

“oh?” takashi sits down, already amused by the strange dynamic between the two of you.

you nod. “yeah. yeah, he’ll drag you into a dark corner and cry at you until you promise not to spread rumors anymore. terrifying.”

“enough.” azumane sounds like he’s in agony, but he picks up his head, pouting at his food as he makes a half-assed attempt to poke at it. “it’s bad enough half the models are scared of me.”

“ooo, so scary,” you coo at him, almost like you’re talking to a cat. you certainly reach out like you’re going to pet him—but your hand falls to his ear instead of his head, tugs on it so cruelly it pulls a yelp from him. “quit pouting, say hi to our new friend.”

“hi. i’m not a gangster, i don’t know where that rumor started.”

takashi frowns. “what rumor?”

“that one of the new apprentices was in a gang.” you snicker again, clearly unconvinced by whoever had told you. “kinda juvenile, huh?”

“uh, yeah.” he can’t say he’s as amused by that rumor as you are. luckily you misunderstand the look on his face.

“don’t worry, azumane here’s had the misfortune of that talk following him around since high school but i’m pretty sure he’d melt down if he had to kill a spider. i’m the junior photographer, by the way.” you give your name and hold up the camera as proof. “also an apprentice, of a kind. we should start a club.”

“careful, or they’ll start saying we’re all in a gang.”

that cackle is adorable, he decides, even if it’s also a little mean-spirited. azumane at least seems to take it well, fully sitting up to glare at you with more endearment than conviction as you desperately try not to throw yourself off the table with your laughter. now that he’s not hunched over it’s clear to see why one might find him off putting—he’s big, even sitting down, with facial hair to go along with the shoulder-length locks pushed back by a headband.

“oh, by all means, laugh it up. i’m very glad you both enjoy my pain.”

“it’s funny because it’s not true, azumane.” you finally decide that the perch isn’t worth the risk of falling, easing yourself down into the seat between the two of them. “you’re the least scary guy i know, you’ll win over those models in no time.”

“most guys wanna be at least a little intimidating, you know,” he grumbles at you.

your nose wrinkles. “first you don’t want people to be scared of you, now you wanna be intimidating? make up your mind.”

“no, no, he’s right. intimidating but not too much, gotta find the right balance.”

“thank you, uh…” azumane turns to him, and takashi holds out his hand over the table.

“mitsuya takashi. i look forward to working with you.”

“azumane asahi.” he shakes. “i swear i’m not a thug, no matter what they’ll tell you.”

takashi gives a huff of laughter in response. “i fully believe you.”
