For several seconds, Seto simply studied the other man. His face was a hairbreadth from smushing against the glass, eyes bright from the light refracted through the water. Was it silly to be so charmed by someone who was equally charmed by his fishes? Especially when he spoke to them so kindly.

"What do you think?" Katsuya asked the dragonet swimming in front of him. "Do you think he'd be interested?"

Seto's interest piqued. While he was dying to hear more, it was rude to eavesdrop, even if Katsuya was apparently seeking counsel from his fishes.

Seto cleared his throat, loudly and obviously.

Katsuya jumped and straightened.

He strolled toward him. "Sorry for taking so long."

"Not at all! Just saying hi to the fellas." Grinning, Katsuya jabbed his thumb at the tank.

Unable to resist probing, Seto asked, "Is that all?"

Katsuya's gaze dipped but for a second, but it was enough. That and him worrying his bottom lip with his teeth gave his continued preoccupation away. Seto longed to free the plump flesh and take it between his own teeth instead. But he turned away and returned to the sofa. It was so long and empty without Katsuya's company next to him.

"Nevermind." Seto shook his head and tried to smile encouragingly at the other man. "Do you want to finish the film?"

Katsuya drifted close, but he didn't immediately take a seat. He remained on his feet and stared at Seto's face for several seconds. Seto clenched his hands into fists before unclenching them again. He deliberately kept his body language open, but the scrutiny was fast grating on him.

He tried anyway.

"So my birthday's next week," Katsuya blurted, as if it explained everything.

AO3 (Writer) Wrapped 2022

Not sure where others are getting this, but I'm just aggregating it myself because I should have all this data anyway. I know how to get it and I don't write that much.

Alright! So far in 2022 I've written 25,107 words of fanfiction and posted it on AO3.

I also archived 12,438 words of Dorian Gray analysis, originally posted here on tumblr on AO3. (I haven't advertised this yet, but if you want to see the full tag archive it's here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/43362990/chapters/109003806)

I feel comfortable with this. Last year I posted 22,881 words of fanfic alone, so I'm up, and that doesn't include the fact I've gotten back into roleplay and have been having some SERIOUS word count a paragraph at a time, no-pressure, no editing fun between friends in the last two months. (Or at least it feels like it. I don't really want to dig through discord and/or tumblr to verify.)

(Did I mention 2021? Look at last year's metrics.)

I posted 6 new stories (2 One Piece and 4 Yugioh) and continued 2 stories from last year.

Of the WIPS I mentioned last year I added to Seek and Ye Shall Find, posted the smut addition to my kidlaw one shot Conquest, and posted 3/4 chapters of the fic that had been delayed due to my concussion (the only part that hasn't been posted is what I had started pre-concussion, actually). I didn't update "The Fic That Shall Not Be Named" but I do still plan to... When I have spoons to deal with the graphic design elements of writing it.

I participated in two Yugioh fandom gift exchanges, and had a blast. I absolutely adored my prompts this year, especially the Dark Valentines of Dimensions exchange which I hadn't participated in before. I hope to participate again in 2023, but have to get time to read the prompt list and sign up.

I've seen people put their top fics by kudos/hits/etc. on these, but that's not really what I want to focus on. I'm going to put my top fics by my own metrics, how I feel about them now, regardless of stats.

Heartsick Rated: G(eneral) Prideshipping (Yami Yugi | Atem/Seto Kaiba) When Kaiba finally manages to pull Atem out of Aaru, they come back ten years later, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was an absolute blast to write. I got to play with Sugoroku's character, write some playful banter, and add in some Mokuba angst on the side.

Chronology: A Case Study Rated: M(ature) Prideshipping (Yami Yugi | Atem/Seto Kaiba) This was meant to be Kaiba's birthday fic last year, and I had to abandon it due to getting a concussion. I'm so proud of myself for not only having an outline of what happened when, but sticking to and with it. Granted I don't have the last chapter posted, but I have a fair amount worked on, and expect this fic to be finished early next year. The fic bounces across space and time, but only ever occurs on Kaiba's birthday, October 25, which is where it gets the title. While the fic suffers some minor continuity issues, the fact that I even stuck with a multiple chapter fic, even a short one is such an accomplishment for me.

Seek and Ye Shall Find Rated: M(ature) Chapter fic with no "main" pairing. There is, however, Violetshipping (Jounouchi Katsuya | Joey Wheeler/Seto Kaiba), Heartshipping (Ryou Bakura/Yugi Mouto) and unrequited Prideshipping (Yami Yugi | Atem/Seto Kaiba). This is my self-indulgent, Katakuri-centric Yugioh/One Piece crossover fic and honestly, I'm still super excited and stoked about it. It's the thing I have written the most for me of anything this year, even if it hasn't been updated in a minute. I do know how I'm pulling Katakuri out of Aaru and some of what I want to happen between him and Atem before I do. I just need to spend some time sitting down and writing it.

@brooklynhype --- So, as per the conversation we’re having in the chat right now---yeah, Whispers in the Dark ends very close to the start of Death-T. A long while ago I wrote up a timeline for the YGO manga1 (up to a certain point) so that I could personally have a better grasp on when things happen, and using that I also created a timeline for Whispers so that . . . well, again, so that I could have a better grasp of when things happen, particularly when writing. (Especially since I tend to mention specific dates in Whispers, and I used those specific dates to do things like currency conversion back in 1996 and whatnot, to make things as realistic as possible.) 

So on that note, I can go ahead and share that! First I’ll share the manga timeline (or at least the relevant parts), and then I’ll share the Whispers timeline so you can see how things line up (and thus can see what did and didn’t happen in Jounouchi’s absence due to the divergence of Whispers). And, obviously, the year for all of these dates is 1996.

As a quick refresher: Chapters 11 & 12 are the first Hirutani chapters (and chapter 11 is the one Whispers diverges on). Chapters 13 - 20 are the Shadi / museum chapters. Chapter 21 is the digital pets chapter. Chapters 22 & 23 are the Hanasaki / Zombire chapters. Chapter 24 is the Mokuba / CapMon chapter. Chapter 25 is the chapter where Jounouchi fights the guy with the knife in his mouth at the arcade, chapter 26 is the Russian roulette dinner with Mokuba, and chapter 27 is the official start of Death-T. 

(Originally I wanted to have Death-T on Kaiba’s actual birthday, but that doesn’t exactly work since Kaiba’s birthday would have been on a Friday that year and it’s never mentioned that the kids are missing school during Death-T, so that tells me that Death-T had to happen on a Sunday, where school wouldn’t be an issue. Thus, maybe it was more like an early birthday present for himself. =P)

Whispers Timeline:

So as you can see, Whispers ends one week before Mokuba accosts Yuugi for the CapMon battle, and two weeks before Yuugi and Jounouchi are picked up for Death-T. And Jounouchi misses the museum incident, the digital pet fad, and Hanasaki’s friendship / Zombire introduction altogether. (Though, considering the fact that Yuugi had already run into Jounouchi in the park by the time the digital pets chapter happened, there’s a very, very high probability that he also skipped out on that fad, and likewise was too preoccupied to talk to Hanasaki, so. Those things probably just didn’t happen at all.) 

That’s how I had it sketched out, anyway. So yeah, Death-T does still happen, and everything that happened in Whispers absolutely does affect how that all plays out (especially, as discussed, Jounouchi and Kaiba’s relationship given what happens in chapter 11 of Whispers, and what Kaiba knows about Jounouchi therefore). Perhaps, if I ever manage to get around to writing the epilogue, I can also write a little Death-T follow-up. ;)

Elemental Heroes Biographies

I’ve been wanting to do this for a while. I’ve listed specifics for all the guys in Elemental Heroes (Jou is included) and which idols I drew inspiration from for their characteristics/skills. The ages listed are based on the age they turn the year that Idolized begins (Chapter 2). We didn’t want to include an actual year and tie it to a set time. Please let me know if you’d like to know anything else. I might get drawing of them all done at some point too. ^^

Ueno Reiji

Element: Fire

Position: Leader, Lead Vocalist

Notes and Inspiration: He’s heavily based on Shownu from Monsta X, though he’s not as good of a dancer. Kind of quiet  and awkward and generally watching all of their nonsense unfold around him. They would maybe call him “father” sometimes (Shownu is, for sure). He’s got a soft, pleasant voice. As a leader, he’s very fair, and he looks out for his members well. They look up to him a lot and respect him. He’s usually the fashion disaster of the group, followed closely by Jou.

Kajiwara Izumi

Color: White

Position: Main Vocalist

Birthday: June 3

Age: 26

Height: 176 cm (5’9”)

Blood type: AB

Notes and Inspiration: Izumi is a fantastic vocalist. A nice tenor voice, powerful, and he can hit some pretty high notes. He can be kind of moody, and he’s rather particular. When Kaiba talks about them being high maintenance, Izumi is 100% who that would be. He’s very serious, and his teasing sometimes comes off as mean. His personality is very loosely based on Youngjae, formerly of B.A.P. His singing voice is more similar to Daehyun from the same group.

Jounouchi Katsuya

Color: Blue

Stage name: Jo.K

Position: Rapper, Main Dancer

Birthday: January 25

Age: 25

Height: 180 cm (5’11”)

Notes and Inspiration: Clearly, we all know Jou. He grew a bit taller after his teenage years. He was scouted off the street and became a trainee where he excelled in dancing and was able to pull of the high pitched, fast rapping quite well. He’s not really based off of anyone in particular, mostly his usual hardheaded, upbeat self, though I did throw in some traits from Zelo (former B.A.P member) and Jooheon (Monsta X).

Yagami Daisuke

Element: Earth

Color: Green

Position: Lead Vocalist

Birthday: April 7

Age: 25

Height: 182 cm (6’)

Notes and Inspiration: I think most people who’ve made it this far KNOW that we love Daisuke. When we first started talking about this idea of making Jou an idol, we knew we needed to have other guys in the group, and I immediately said, “We’re naming one of them Daisuke!” This is partially because of my love for Japanese voice actor Ono Daisuke. Daisuke is somewhat like Taemin from Shinee.  He’s got a soft, melodic voice, and he’s so charismatic that he can charm nearly anyone. He’s also a bit of a troll. Extremely fashionable, and he’s usually poking fun at whatever Jou and Reiji wear to the airport.

Tatsumi Nobuhiko

Element: Metal

Color: Black/Grey

Stage name: Nobu

Position: Rapper, Lead Dancer

Birthday: August 17

Age: 23

Height: 187 cm (6’2”)

Notes and Inspiration: Nobu is based on my favorite Kpop maknae (youngest member), Jun from U-KISS. He’s so sincere and truly loves all of the older members of the group. They’re similarly skilled in rapping, dancing, and singing. They are also both totally adorable, and the older guys are very affectionate towards him.

otherwise, i got Jounouchi's birthday fic to edit and post this month. we're going back to the NYC boys, aka the Old Friends universe, for this one. hoping to post chapter 1 next week, and then chapter 2, the part with all the smutty bits, will go up on the day of Jounouchi's birthday.

after that, the next thing to be likely posted is The Snow Bunny Job for Leverage AU, but i'm still considering if i want to expand that installment further or not.

As I write things, I mainly just slot the idea into this list under the appropriate heading and say godspeed. If it's tied to a specific day/season, I add it as a note to give myself a sense of the timing. Sometimes I will shift things around as the narrative evolves. Such as Silver-tongued might ultimately end up being a Year 3 story rather than Year 4.

There's less timeline jumping around nowadays, but the recent one being set on Jounouchi's birthday necessarily means it has to be a Year 2+ fic because I already wrote a birthday fic for him in Year 2. 😂 And for Year 1 fic, there are plenty that are mostly PWPs and have less plot, so it was less of a concern hopping around in the timeline because the most limiting factor was what I've previously mentioned as having been done to Jounouchi. Any "plot" is backloaded into the latter part of Year 1, namely starting from when they graduate from high school onward.

And yes, to try and ensure some level of character continuity, I will re-read the fics/chapters before and after it. Occasionally, I also re-read the series from start to finish to remind myself of the emotional trajectory.

So tldr: I'm mostly winging it. Wish me luck.
