ZONE - First impression and reactions!

I've been so busy for the past two weeks that I didn't even have much time to follow their promo the way I'd liked, but I'm finally free! I wanted to write down my thoughts on Zone on the first listen, which is something I usually do on twt but I thought 20 songs would be too much for a thread, so here we are. I'd say for now my favorite songs are On My Radar, Ark, and Forever Love (if that counts lol), but overall is a no skip album for me. I seriously enjoyed it and I can't wait to listen to it again.

INTRODUCTION: A weirdly cute song. Slightly eery? but in an inviting and nice kind of way lol.

T.R.H.M: INSANE SONG. I love how extremely fun and fast-paced it is. EDM royalty. Exactly what millennials want. The beat is SO addictive.

ON MY RADAR: LOVE THAT DIRTY BASS LINE AND THE ELECTRONIC DRUM. OH GOD. LOVE THEIR VOICES. I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO SAY, IT’S TOO GOOD. Ughhh the build up to changmin’s high note is insane. CHILLLS.

PARTY LIKE MADONA: Another fun song! It has that retro vibe that you would expect from a song titled like this. I can hear it being played in a song like Barby lol. They’re really delivering all the dance songs, they’re so good.

SWEET SURRENDER: well you know how I feel about this song. Changmin’s moans, breathy voice, and his lines at the end are my personal sleep paralysis demon.

PARFUM: oh the voice layering at the beginning is so delicious. The instrumental reminds me of cbx for some reason, probably the city pop vibes. A good change of pace from the previous songs. Can they stop asking if I want to come over though? It’s messing me up.

FRESH: I’m loving this chill section of the album. Ideal for a late night drive with the windows low and enjoying the spring breeze (it’s spring here). I really like yunho’s rap here, even though it’s way too short.

うまく言えずにごめんね: I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it either. It’ll grow on me. It sounds like the kind of song that works really well for concerts and then they do a video about it that makes me really emotional and I end up loving it.

LIVE YOUR LIFE: I don’t have many thoughts on this one. It’s enjoyable though. The whistling is very catchy.

IT’S TRUE IT’S HERE: Is this the toho band song?? It really sounds like them from the beginning. THIS IS A VIBE. I just can see how amazing is going to be live with the whole band and dancers showing off. They’re so good. I’m so glad Yunho and Changming have such a skilled and dedicated team with them.

DAMN GOOD: I don’t know how to explain it but this song is making me feel things. Like the ending credits of a movie where the main character finally achieves their goal. I also LOVE their voices here.

ARK: THE EMOTIONAL ROCK SONG!! THEY DID THIS FOR ME. OH TOHOSHINKI YOU’RE SO PERFECT. SUCH AN IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY OF VOCALS FROM BOTH OF THEM. I’M TEARING UP.

DEAREST: Ok, fist time listening to this song because I lost someone dear to me recently and I didn’t want to cry. I’m crying now but at least I was prepared. This is such a classic Tohoshinki ballad and I love it for that exact reason. It’ll probably end up being one of my favorites.

UTSUROI: I don’t want to comment on all the previous singles, but just let me say Utsuroi makes me so extremely emotional. I remember crying so much when the mv came out; something about their lovely harmonies plus the visuals evoked so many nice and comforting feelings in me. It still does.

No Sympathy: Is just that song. I don’t need to say anything more about it. I’m obsessed.

Forever Love: This is such a perfect song to close the album. WOW. Do you ever feel overwhelmed by how much music can make you feel? I have tears in my eyes. I love tohoshinki.

I guess as a brief introduction I do some bullet points and then give you some songs to check out!

They go by TVXQ for the most part, but you'll also see their Japanese name, Tohoshinki, and their Korean name Dong Bang Shin Ki (DBSK). All translate to roughly Rising Gods of the East.

They debuted in 2003 as a 5 member group, and 3 of them left in 2010. Anything from before 2010 you come across will have the 5 voices. Yunho and Changmin stayed as TVXQ and "re-debuted" in 2011.

Personally I think it is totally worth it to listen to the old stuff. I don't think there ever was and ever will be a phenomenon like TVXQ/DBSK as a group of 5, and their korean and japanese songs and ballads are mind blowing.

That being said, I stuck with Yunho and Changmin more than the others after college (funnily I was introduced to them just as they were breaking up), and consider them to be the true TVXQ. They worked insanely hard to make TVXQ theirs and their vocals and talent have grown so, so much to fill in the voices that left.

So some song recs! I'll stick to the Korean songs for now, but their Japanese catalogue is NUTS. I think at this point they have more Japanese songs tbh.

Chocolate (he can cut it out, quite frankly) Maniac (so theatrical, so musical, so AHHH. I think this is my fave of his solos) Fever (I lost my ever loving mind when I saw this for the first time. Face clutching ensued.)

Picking 3 for each of them was incredibly difficult omg. I'm excited for your thoughts! Completely understandable if you don't go through all of them, but these are some personal faves.

Finally, they just did a Killing Voice episode where they do a half hour medley of a ton of songs if you prefer to sample them that way! This is where the mirotic clip I reblogged is from :D

Their new album just came out and is called 20&2 if you want to take a listen. It's their first Korean comeback is 2018 so we've all been feral lately.

Ok that we layered in TRI-ANGLE's opening with the music and BoA vocalization, thoughwithout a certain someone's English lyrics also seems very interesting to me.

Nevermind that it was a stylistic era that arguably went the best for Jaejoong... We won't talk about everyone's unfortunate stylistic choices.

The layering of references and dance moves to several other TVXQ songs did not go unnoticed.

Casually the lyric arrangement hits only 4 parts, and ignores the existence of Yoochun parts. I thought maybe this was a 2VXQ arrangement so I did my Library Technician/Art History searchy search and this is an arrangement for the MAMA '23 performance one. They always do Rising Sun from start to finish. Also adding in to all of this. The "Somebody Talks" has Jae and Junsu's backtrack still in the mix. An album that strengthed the bonds between the two of Tohoshinki.

In English, “TONE” has many meanings in relation to music, to color, as well as other things.  If they can control even the smallest details, can they step up as artists?

The two of them completed an album they put their passion into. Changmin: We created it thinking of it as a present for fans.  Because it’s the first album [in Japan] since becoming a duo, we put our hearts into every song so that they would be able to see our growth.

Yunho: For Tohoshinki, I think the chorus is also a weapon, so one task was for the two of us was to cover it.  There are times where Changmin is the main singer and I do the chorus, and others where I am the main and Changmin does the chorus.  With this I think we were able to make a new sound.

Has your bond gotten stronger? Y: While preparing for the album, I think it has.  We understand each other by just looking at one another.  Changmin and I have 108 degree opposing styles but…

C: 180 degrees!  (he interrupts without delay)

Y: Ahhh!  180 degrees. (embarrassed)  Our styles are different, but on the contrary I think we were able to make a new sound.

Did you find a new side to yourselves? C: To be honest, we’ve been having activities for 8 years, and without realizing it Yunho has become a part of my life.  It’s hard to say if this is finding a new side but…

Y: (Breaks out into a big smile while clapping)

C: But I think “Shiawase Iro no Hana” is song where Yunho’s charm as an adult comes out.

Y: For me it’s Changmin’s rap.  For Changmin, I think of singing, but he was able to produce a mature rap, and I think this is a new weapon for him.

For your nationwide arena tour next year in January, what kind of tour do you want it do be? C: We want to show a more mature Tohoshinki with better performances and songs.  We also want to express our gratitude to fans who have been waiting a long time.

Y: For me, being on stage is a big thing.  It’s not just about giving cool performances, it also conveys the message that “Tohoshinki has come this far.”  But of course, being on stage makes me happy.  Lately I’ve been feeling very happy.  In my personal time, the happiest moments are when I am sleeping in my home (laughs).

C: I also feel happy being on stage.  In my private time, I am happy when after finishing a live I can slowly drink a beer and relax.

What are things you expect from each other from here on out? C: I don’t really demand a lot from people.  It doesn’t mean I don’t have expectations but…

Y: I’m shocked (surprised)!

C: I just don’t have big expectations.  I’d be happy if we could continue like this.

Y: I’m the same as Changmin.  People already know about our friendship, so now I just want to try my best and keep aiming higher.

We want to sing with everyone at our solo concert!

Did you sing for “introduction ~magenta~?” C: I thought it was like a children’s song.  It’s a genre we’ve never done up till now, so we were worried if it would really sound like a real children’s song (laughs).  I thought this song would give life to the other tracks, so I sang it with a pure feeling.

Y: I think the intro is a representative of all the tracks.  I think this song shows how hard Changmin and I worked to prepare this album.

C: Tohoshinki dance numbers up until now have been mostly intense tracks that leave the person breathless. (Next to him, Yunho breaks out into a big smile!)  This song is like that as well, but this time the lyrics are different from the others because we invite the girl directly.

Y: The MV was the first time I filmed an action scene.  I do a high kick all of sudden, but at first I wasn’t able to comprehend it (laughs).  But because I wanted to show a more mature side of myself, I challenged myself.  Also, this was also the first time I used gray color contacts.  I don’t really understand contacts (laughs).  I think the scenes I did fit well with the dance scenes everyone worked hard on, so I’m very satisfied with it.

What is Duet like? C: The lyrics are about protecting the one you love no matter what.  It’s a manly expression of love.

Y: The title “Duet” resembles us in some ways.  You’ll realize that mixed in with Tohoshinki’s style is a new appeal.  The lyrics…has Changmin ever experienced them?  I have (laughs), so I did the recording while thinking about things in the past.

A new long song was created with a powerful ballad!

What kind of thoughts did you sing “Shiawase-Iro no Hana” with? C: When I first listened to the demo track, I thought it could become a Tohoshinki ballad number, and the two of us recorded it with our honest feelings.  Even when Yunho finished recording, he said “I want to re-record the whole thing!” and redid it about two times.  In the album, it is the track that we re-recorded and worked on the most.

Y: We got an OK from the director, but I asked myself about Tohoshinki’s limits and how far we could reach, and I had a feeling like, “We have to do a little more!  We can do it!”  With that, it’s a long 6 minute and 40 second song.  Up until now, we’ve shown everyone magnificent ballads like “Bolero,” but this time it’s in the same genre but just with our two voices.  Because of this, we wanted to push ourselves to the limit.

What about Easy Mind? C: The track has lyrics that are enjoyable and make you forget your stress.  I think it’s a song that we can get fired up about with our guests during lives, so I sang it with enthusiasm.

What kind of track is Weep? Y: We recorded it with a feeling of gratitude.  Personally I think it would make a good ending song for our solo concert.  I would be happy if everyone could listen to the track and sing along with us.

Are Easy Mind and Weep songs that are directed at the fans? Y: Yes.  We sang it with a feeling of gratitude towards them.  When you listen to “Easy Mind,” there’s a strange awkward whistle at the end though (laughs).  That’s me singing.  It’s because I was tricked by Changmin (laughs).  changmin told the director, “Yunho is good at whistling.”  Even though I’m really bad at it… but it became an interesting episode because it adds flavor like that.  In “Weep” we put our gratitude into the last la-la-la part.

Please tell us about the tracks you like. Y: For me, it’s the track we recorded a lot, “Shiawase-Iro no Hana.”  It’s a big song and part of the ballad genre we’ve shown everyone before.  The two of us really worked hard on it, so please check it out!

C: For me, it’s ��Why?”  I think it’s the track that holds proof that we’ve restarted activities.  Also, for this album, I hope that we can show everyone a more mature Tohoshinki.

I love your blog , I just became a Cassie last month and even though I knew about "share the world" , "we are remix" and "asu wa kuru Kara" from the last 4 years I never knew who sang them, I wish I wasn't so ignorant of TVXQ and Tohoshinki as K-pop and Jpop artists. I don't know why almost their entire Japanese discography still isn't available on Spotify , SM loves profits and still they haven't made available their Japanese discography on Spotify.

I have fallen in love with every song of theirs that I have listened to whether it be Catch Me , Hug , Purple Line , Balloons, Wrong Number, Maximum, Keep your Head Down , Broken , Spellbound, She , Love in the Ice , Bolero , Doushite, Unforgettable, My little Princess, The Chance of Love , Humanoids, and all of them, all of them engraved themselves in my heart just by listening to them for the first time.

I hate how SM entertainment is treating Yunho and Changmin like this , even as new fan it's really unbearable and saddening and frustrating, they can give comebacks to all of their groups but not to TVXQ.

The songs that SM entertainment produces now for their new groups sound horrendous and those songs would never be eternal like TVXQ's songs.

I can't imagine the pain of veteran cassies who see TVXQ's history and legacy being erased everyday by new k-pop fans and SM entertainment. More power to you.

It is very difficult as a long time fan of TVXQ to watch as SM slowly and methodically puts them on the shelf. How newer kpop fans have forgotten about them and SM just doesn't seem to care to save TVXQs image or legacy any more. It hurts so so badly....and I feel there is nothing I can do to stop everything.
