Trips I Took This Year - Seoul, South Korea (Part 2)

While I'm not a big guided tour fan, I did take a couple to enjoy some of the cultural sights around Seoul. What was impressive to me was just how much of centuries year old history has been preserved and lived in the heart of the city. And that you could escape the hustle and bustle of city life by taking a break within the grounds of these places. Plus, it helped to give a feel for what the city felt like from its ancient beginnings.

You know angkor wat? That's surprising since not a lot of people outside cambodia know this ancient architecture beauty :) i've been to siem reap (where angkor wat is) about 3 times counting now. The two times before were like years ago and i barely remember

The area where the temple is located is different because some build another bridge to cross since the bridge apart of angkor wat was breaking sorta. They're trying to reconstruct it now i think.

As a cambodian, i appreaciate you recognizing angkor wat ♡ i apologize if i'm rambling about it too much. I can't help but tell people about things in my culture 😭

I’m a huge history buff, and I am pretty biased towards the history of Asia and some parts of Europe. I also love looking at the ancient buildings of those continents, such as the Changdeokgung palace of Seoul, and the Angkor Thom temple.

I also really love the myths of the Asian culture, such as the Oni in Japanese folklore and the Rahu king (I think that’s the name of it?)

I hope none of this sounds rude or off putting, culturally insensitive or inappropriate. I’m not Asian, but I really do love the history of the continent <3

The Best Reasons to Visit Seoul

Seoul is one of the world's largest cities and the capital of South Korea. The city with more than 10 million people is the political, cultural and economic center of South Korea. The vibrant city with 4 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and numerous museums as well as grand Shopping plazas, markets, restaurants and skyscrapers is a preferred tourist destination. Gyeongbok Palace located in Seoul's major avenue, Sejongro is the most popular royal palace of the country. Lotte and Hyundai stores are the other two big centers and the food court of Lotte is also notable. Bugaksan is the peak near the Blue House and is an ideal place for hiking. It offers a fantastic view of the city at a height of 342 meters. Here you can take-in Seoul's ancient fortress and many scenic areas nearby. National Museum of Korea that holds more than 220, 000 objects is the largest in the country. It has vast exhibition halls, 6 permanent display galleries, a children's museum, restaurants and more. Leeum Samsung Museum of Art is another best-known museum and is notable for its wonderful architecture and impressive collection.

Itaewon neighborhood close to the U. S. Army base is very popular among foreign tourists. This expatriate-friendly area has numerous trendy clubs, bars, restaurants and shops that sell various products. Club Volume featuring the best DJs and French café Le Saint Ex are particularly notable and enjoy a dinner at Kate's Kitchen. Trip Insadong, the famed cultural art market and view its great collection of Korean paintings, sculptures and more. Stroll along the beautiful, 5. 8 km long Cheonggyecheon Stream to enjoy the natural beauty and relax. The calm stream is 15 ft. below street level and has many petite falls and overhead bridges to enjoy.

Round-the-clock Namdaemun market is the busiest market that has thousands of shops arranged in many multi-story buildings, countless vendor booths and food stalls offering traditional cuisine. The vibrant street is the best to buy a range of items at incredibly low prices. The War Memorial of Korea is actually an enormous military museum and is a must visit for history buffs. The renowned memorial that holds planes, guns and tanks narrates the history of wars the country had fought with many of its enemies, but mainly its neighbor North Korea.

Seoul Write-Up: Sites

We traveled to Seoul in March 2024, and traveling the country, eating delicious food and seeing amazing sites. Here are the sites I think are most worthwhile in Seoul:

Changdeokgung palace- this is amazing, the nicest of all the city palaces 

Jongmyo Shrine- very nice, if you go when its not all covered up for restoration

Gyeongbokgoong palace- fabulous, well worth spending at least an hour ambling around here

Deoksugung palace- also nice to visit, and worth it to go to the exhibit in the building at the back on Korean history

Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP)- very worth coming here just to see the architecture of the building

Insa-dong- a very cool neighborhood to walk around in

Seongsu-dong- really worth walking around for an hour or two and checking out the cool stores, and all the pop-ups with long lines of young people 

Seochon Hanok Village- cute neighborhood to walk around in

Bukchon Hanok- meh, cute exteriors but not that much to see

Gilsangsa Temple- worth passing by if you are going up to the Stone Art museum, since its nearby. But its a modern temple with not that much to see, so isn’t worth going out of your way to.
