CHAND BIBI // SULTANA OF AHMEDNAGAR
“She was an Indian ruler and warrior, who acted as the regent of Ibrahim Adil Shaha II (Bijapur Sultanate) in 1580-1590 and of Bahadur Shah (Ahmednagar Sultanate) in 1595-1600. She is best known for defending Ahmednagar against the Mughal forces of Emperor Akbar in 1595. She helped depose or dismiss all but one of the regents of Ibrahim. After much fighting over the successor of Ibrahim Nizam Shah, Bibi proclaimed Bahadur Shah king of Ahmednagar and accepted regency. She look leadership and defended the Ahmednagar fort successfully. However, she was killed by an enraged mob of her own troops after it was believed she betrayed the fort.”

Painting, in opaque watercolour on paper, depicting a lady, perhaps Chand Bibi of Bijapur, India seated on a rock in a lake near a herd of elephants. This painting is in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK.
(Sultana Chand Bibi (1550–1599 CE) was the Regent of Bijapur Sultanate 1580-1590, and regent of Ahmednagar Sultanate, in India holding the throne for her minor nephew.)
After all, whomst among us has not bathed in a lake of lotuses with our herd of elephants in attendance?

Remembering #AbrarAlvi, the illustrious screenwriter and dialogue writer in Hindi films, on his 14th death anniversary (18/11/09).
He was a key member of Guru Dutt's team and known for writing films like "Aar-Paar," "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam," "Kaagaz Ke Phool," "Pyaasa," and "Mr. & Mrs. '55." In 1953, while on the set of "Baaz," he met Guru Dutt. Dutt was struggling with a scene, and he offered a suggestion that impressed Dutt so much that he asked him to write "Aar-Paar." This led to him becoming a vital part of Dutt's team.
The films he worked on with Dutt are now considered classics worldwide. He also directed the successful movie "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam." He appeared in a touching three-part documentary about Guru Dutt, reflecting on their work together. This documentary was made by Channel 4 and is included in the DVD extras for "Kaagaz Ke Phool" and "Chaudhvin ka Chand."
After working with Guru Dutt and a controversy over who really directed "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam," he found it hard to make a mark as a director. But he continued to write screenplays and dialogues for many films, some of which were big hits, like "Professor," "Prince," and "Suraj." He also worked with Rajesh Khanna, writing for "Janta Hawaldar" and doing the screenplay and dialogues for "Begunaah."
In this photo, Director Abrar Alvi enjoys snacks in the company of #GuruDutt on the sets of the movie Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962).

For My Father, Karachi 1947
Meena Alexander
Mid-May, centipedes looped over netting at the well's mouth.
Girls grew frisky in summer frocks, lilies spotted with blood.
You were bound to meteorology,
Science of fickle clouds, ferocious winds.
The day you turned twenty-six fighter planes cut a storm,
Fissured air baring the heart's intricate meshwork
Of want and need—
Springs of cirrus out of which sap and shoot you raised me.
Crossing Chand Bibi Road,
Named after the princess who rode with hawks,
Slept with a gold sword under her pillow,
Raced on polo fields,
You saw a man lift a child, her chest burnt with oil,
Her small thighs bruised.
He bore her through latticed hallways
Into Lady Dufferin's hospital.
How could you pierce the acumen of empire,
Mesh of deception through which soldiers crawled,
Trees slashed with petrol,
Grille work of light in a partitioned land?
When you turned away,
Your blue black hair was crowned with smoke—
You knelt on a stone. On your bent head
The monsoons poured.

Here's an update including 3 videos in better quality: Chaudhvin ka Chand, Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam and Bahurani
Guru Dutt Films Master Post
“Baazi” (1951) - Guru Dutt’s directional debut stars his good friend Dev Anand. During the making of this film, Guru Dutt and the already famous playback singer Geeta Roy first met. Another knot was tied with assistant director of photography V.K. Murthy. Cameo appearance by Guru Dutt in the opening sequence
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyoamSouESo
“Jaal” (1952) - A very atmospheric setting in a Goan Christian fisher community. Geeta Bali gets gaslighted by Dev Anand, who, for a change, portrays a cold-as-ice villain in this story of betrayal and forgiveness. Guru Dutt wrote the script, directed and appeared as a fisherman in a song sequence.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOjeDbhbyfw&t=3303s
“Baaz” (1953) - Full anti-colonial girl power here as Geeta Bali’s pirate queen transforms a reluctant prince into a freedom fighter - and a life partner. Guru Dutt’s debut as a leading man. He also directed and co-produced with Geeta Bali’s sister. Hanging out on the sets was one actor’s cousin who had finished his law studies but was more inclined to writing: Abrar Alvi.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7jVTF8sX2g&t=182s
“Aar Paar” (1954) - Urban social plus crime thriller plus love story. Guru Dutt anti-type casted both Shyama and Shakila, Abrar Alvi wrote true-to-life dialogue and Johnny Walker met his future wife Noor on the sets.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypS6d_XhvxE&t=616s
“Mr & Mrs ‘55 (1955) - Tame the shrew and your own ego, and don’t let other people’s rules, ancient or modern, stand in the way of your own happiness! Madhubala’s debut as a comic heroine, Lalita Pawar’s awesome villainess and 100 % irony. Meet a heroine who is allowed to be just a big fool -just like many heroes…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlE4w6PI6yM&t=6325s
“Sailaab” (1956) - An untraceable film, except for the songs and some artwork and stills. Guru Dutt took over because both Geeta Dutt and her composer brother Mukul Roy were involved. He was unhappy with the result and Geeta lost a lot of money.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwJGAi7kmRA
“C.I.D.” (1956) - Dev Anand stars in this well balanced crime thriller directed by Raj Khosla who himself had a hard time dealing with an exceptionally talented but also quite uncut newcomer to Hindi films: Waheeda Rehman.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJKm0AXIo2w&t=7848s
“Pyaasa” (1957) - If I had to choose just ONE work of art for the rest of my life, here it is. Enough said. Do watch the wonderful, moving, thought-provoking Pyaasa!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_z5hTBWz2c&t=1716s
“12 O’Clock” (1958) - This entertaining crime thriller is not officially a Guru Dutt film, but in fact it is, as the team also includes regulars such as Geeta Dutt, Abrar Alvi, VK Murthy, Rehman, Johnny Walker, Waheeda Rehman, Uma Devi, OP Nayyar, Majrooh Sultanpuri and some cute inside jokes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otghuC5NuLY&t=171s
“Kaagaz Ke Phool” (1959) - A caustic look at the ups and downs of show biz and the saddest film ever. Two lonely unwanted people meet, support and inspire each other. But in this life, no moment of happiness remains unpunished. Brilliant script by Abrar Alvi. Guru Dutt / Waheeda Rehman chemistry in full bloom - definitely not a paper flower!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9f4IhM-Wbeg
“Chaudhvin Ka Chand” (1960) - A beautiful portrayal of Muslim life in pre-independence Lucknow. Light-hearted comedy of errors in the first half, but then the question arises whether you possibly can build your own happiness on the misfortune of someone else who is also close to your heart?
youtube
“Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam” (1962) - An unforgettable Gothic tale of the downfall of an era, embodied in the fantastic Meena Kumari. She is supported by colleagues in top form - Guru Dutt, Rehman, Waheeda Rehman - but still this is HER film.
youtube
“Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi” (1964/66) - A female version of the Chaudhvin Ka Chand conflict in a modern setting. A tale of two sisters in which a mercurian Tanuja is the cool breeze while dark clouds gather over the sensible Mala Sinha. Guru Dutt passed away when this film was only half ready so the result is a bit uneven in it’s execution, but Dharmendra, who replaced him in the male lead, did a good job and saved the day.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rBRZC9oOEc&t=67s
Others (as an actor):
“Sautela Bhai” (1962) - a Saratchandra book adaptation directed by Mahesh Kaul.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uNWcoCE0Fw
“Bharosa” (1963) - family drama opposite young Asha Parekh.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdsJevbdxqA&t=3856s
“Bahurani” (1963) - powerhouse performance by Mala Sinha, and Guru Dutt essaying a role that would get any Western actor an Academy Award.
youtube
“Sanjh aur Savera” (1964) - an early Hrishikesh Mukherjee film reuniting Meena Kumari and Guru Dutt. Keep your fingers crossed for a happier ending this time!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt3IX3pXGFU&t=3792s
“Suhagan” (1964) - Mala Sinha and Guru Dutt again. Romantic lovers have to overcome some obstacles but their married life becomes hell on earth. Released posthumously and sad to watch indeed.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUq-mJLiBxk&t=76s
Most important shelved films:
“Gouri” - imagine beautiful Geeta Dutt as a tragic heroine in a Kolkata setting, music by SD Burman and in Cinemascope - but due to personal problems, it was not meant to be. Here’s a rare song recording:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=giwQGhEw-zQ
“Raaz” - an adaptation of Wilkie Collins’ Victorian mystery thriller “The Woman in White” with Waheeda Rehman in a double role. Several reels were shot and now seem lost, as the project was shelved. Raj Khosla however saved the basic idea and transformed it into his 1964 hit film “Who Kaun Thi?”
“Love and God” - K. Asif’s version of Leila and Majnu. Wouldn’t Guru Dutt have been an ideal Majnu opposite Nimmi’s Leila?
“Picnic” - at least we have a lovely song sequence with Sadhana and Guru Dutt:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6wVrjsRDnk
I tried to find video uploads in decent quality with correct aspect ratio and subtitles if possible. Will update this post whenever I find something new or interesting. It has become a very long post but I won’t apologize for that and I hope you’ll find it useful and discover films and info that are new to you. :)

Anne Baxter (The Ten Commandments, All About Eve)—her soft, gentle voice in "all about eve", those gentle eyes with something odd behind them, the way she flips from Sweet Innocent to Viper on a dime......there was something Built Different about anne baxter, man, and it makes her so good for playing people who are Built Wrong. also one of my favorite batmen villains (her joint episode w vincent price is a delight) and of course I'm obsessed with her columbo episode where she bosses around edith head and does fabulous movie star things for no good reason. and i would be REMISS if i didn't mention her slink—oh the slink—in the ten commandments...................pardon me i must go think of sinning again
Waheeda Rehman (Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Pyaasa, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam)—90+ films and counting, an absolute legend of Hindi cinema. When I see her in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam it makes me want to chew glass

Anne Baxter:
The prettiest murderer in that film. Just so beautifully evil as Nefertari.
Anne Baxter was part of my Bisexual Awakening. My family has a tradition that every Palm Sunday we watch The ten commandments on TV together... And starting from a very young age, I essentially developed a crushes on Anne Baxter's Nefertiri & Yul Brynner's Ramses. Dude, the woman was HOT! They both were! My crush definitely wasn't helped by the fact that Anne Baxter's costumes were a bit on the sheer side. She had a way of capturing you with her eyes, and I never understood why Charlton heston's Moses didn't just have a threesome with Nefertiri and Ramses. LOL
Her Nefertiri in The Ten Commandments was FORMATIVE TO ME. If not the hottest old movie lady, then she definitely played the hottest old movie character. if that makes sense.
Look. Listen. I only *just* discovered her on a post from the Have You Seen This Romcom poll blog. Saw she had the same last name as me and went OOH hi hello. Went to her IMdB and saw she was born in Indiana like moi. I am now even more intrigued. Been eagerly telling my partner this, and he was like "maybe you guys are distantly related?" And after 2 hrs of going down the tumblr tag + her imdb photos, I'm In Deep(tm) and I can't stop looking at her like 😍 When I go to my grandma's house, bet your ass I'm gonna check my grandpa's genealogy and see if we're somehow related. Sorry that's not really propaganda I just got real excited, esp when I saw that the submission deadline was extended (bless your soul). Narrowing down the movies where she's hottest in was Hell tyvm. I've only just discovered her, she looks gorgeous to me in every movie still I see of her gdi lol.

Chand Bibi - Heroic queen of the Deccan
Chand Bibi (1550-1599) was the daughter of Hussain Nizam Shah I of Ahmednagar, present day India. At the age of 12, she was married to Ali Adil Shah I of the Bijapur Sultanate to secure an alliance between him and her family.
Chand Bibi grew into a brilliant woman. She spoke Persian, Arabic, Turkish, Urdu as well as the dialects used in the army. She drew, painted, played the veena, rode on horseback and enjoyed outdoor sports. Chand Bibi acquired considerable political influence, joined her husband on his military campaigns and had her say in the matters of the state.
Ali Adil Shah was murdered in 1579. Since he was childless, the son of his brother was crowned sultan. Chand Bibi became and his guardian and got rid of the nobleman who had been appointed as the regent. However, the next regent managed to imprison her. Another noble led an army to rescue Chand Bibi and restored her as the young sultan’s guardian.
In 1580, Bijapur was besieged by the armies of the neighboring sultanates of Golconda and Ahmednagar. Chand Bibi oversaw the defense, went from post to post and encouraged the besieged. She personally guarded a breach caused by the enemy bombardments and directed the repair’s work. During this time, she also solved internal conflicts among the nobles and managed to raise a large force, causing the siege to be lifted after a year.
After a coup was masterminded by a new regent, Chand Bibi decided to leave Bishapur. When a bride was sent to her homeland, she went with her. Her kingdom was, however, caught in violent succession wars. In 1595, the powerful Mughal emperor laid his eyes on Ahmednagar and launched an invasion. Besieged in the Ahmednagar fort, Chand Bibi refused to submit, even if she had to fight an enemy that was reputed to be invincible. She convinced the neighboring powers to send troops and enlisted a general to help her.
However, the Mughal sappers dug five tunnels full of explosive under the fort. Chand Bibi ordered two of them to be countermined to remove the explosives, but the third one exploded, bringing down a large portion of the city wall. Chand Bibi then donned armor and rushed forward with a sword in her hand to defend the breach, soon joined by her soldiers. The defenders fought valiantly and repelled the enemy.
Chand Bibi was seen by all defending the breach and this feat won her the admiration of her enemy. She then oversaw the repair during the whole night. Chand Bib, however, lost her allies and found herself isolated. She managed to strike a good deal with the invaders, as she recognized the precariousness of her position. A truce was negotiated, but the conflicts of factions resumed at court.
The truce was broken in 1599 when the Mughal went back. Chand Bibi found herself once again besieged with a small garrison. Realizing that it was a losing battle, she decided to surrender. She made the mistake of telling a senior officer about her plan, he was appalled about this and broke into the palace with other soldiers to murder her in her own apartments. The Mughal eventually managed to conquer the fort.

Chand Bibi (1550-1599 CE/AD) was an Indian Muslim regent and warrior. She is known for defending Ahmednagar against the Mughal forces of Emperor Akbar in 1595. She played sitar and apparently had a hobby of painting flowers.
