Undefeated Japan wins 3rd Classic championship

Team Japan hoisted the 2023 World Baseball Classic trophy to celebrate its third tournament championship with a 3-2 victory over Team USA on Tuesday at loanDepot park. Undefeated Japan (7-0) topped reigning champ USA for its first title since winning back-to-back titles in 2006 and ‘09. Japan is the only team to clinch multiple championships and improved to 30-8 all-time in the WBC.

In a matchup anticipated by many, Shohei Ohtani clinched the game by striking out Angels teammate Mike Trout in the ninth.

Ohtani allowed a leadoff walk to Jeff McNeil before inducing a double play by Mookie Betts. Then came Trout with two outs and nobody on, the moment the entire world had been waiting for. In an ending as storybook as it gets, he struck out his teammate on a 3-2 pitch after pumping multiple 100 mph fastballs.
