Guayaquil Ch F: Federico Agustin Gomez [8] def. M. Tomas Barrios Vera 6-1, 6-4 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
Despite T. Barrios Vera's best efforts to raise his game in the second set, where he moved forward a little bit more often and some of his volleys paved the way to or create some opportunities to break, Fede's more consistent groundstrokes and accurate hitting helped him relieve those pressure and stayed firm in the second set. As a result, T. Barrios Vera might have leveled the play as both of them had 8 break points throughout the match, but Fede converted 50% of them thanks to his confident first-set performance.
It turned out that both players also had distinct service game strengths throughout this match. Fede might have scored 5 aces than T. Barrios Vera's 1, which allowed the former to have the slight edge as he won 68% of his first serve points, 18% more than the Chilean, which helped him to navigate even some forever deuce situations. However, this did not come without risks, as Fede's 5 double faults faded his second serve winning percentage to 45%, 5% lower than T. Barrios Vera.
Marking his second Challenger-level singles title, Fede rose to a career-high ranking of 135 live, justifying his rise through some deep runs this season. Both of them will continue their journey in the Lima 2 Challenger, where Fede will face third seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli in the first round, while T. Barrios Vera faces Michiel de Krom in the same round. And the last pushes continue.

Fede initially had a strong start to the second set as he broke early to 1-0 thanks to his backhand winner creating his break point, converting it due to T. Barrios Vera's unforced error. However, a forehand error from the former was taken advantage of by the latter, who volleyed his way to create his initial break point before the break-back occurred to 1-1 due to a double fault. The unseeded Chilean's volleys became more intriguing several moments later, where he created his break point, but Fede still held his serves to 2-2.
It was not until the fifth game, which Fede started with a smooth forehand winner before he fired a backhand winner to set up his 2-point lead. As he became more aggressive, T. Barrios Vera ran out of answers, thus the eighth seed broke to 3-2 before consolidating to 4-2. Despite the latter's best efforts, Fede earned an opportunity to serve for the match, which he succeeded (6-4) even if a match point was saved over T. Barrios Vera's forehand return ace, thus winning him his third Challenger singles title of the year.

The next Challenger-level final for the packed week was the Guayaquil Challenger, where eighth seed Federico Agustin Gomez, who previously defeated fourth seed Roman Andres Burruchaga 6-3, 6-0 in a straightforward manner, took on M. Tomas Barrios Vera, who stunned second seed Federico Coria 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 after an entire comeback. While the flow of the match might have suggested it was closer than the scoreboard, it all came down to their final shots under pressure, which affected the course of the match in one way or another.
After 3 straight holds, Fede confirmed his solid start to the match through his powerful strokes and more accurate hitting as it set up his 2-point lead before breaking to 3-1 thanks to blasting more forehand winners, consolidating his position to 4-1 afterward. Somehow, his domination did not stop as he fired another forehand winner to pave the way before doubling his break advantage to 5-1.
As a result, Fede had an opportunity to serve for the first set. However, he had several of his set points being fumbled over his forehand errors, which also included a failed attempt to respond to T. Barrios Vera's preceding volley, and faced several break points out of his double faults and a serve+1 (mostly forehand finish) error. Ultimately, the Argentinean eighth seed was still able to take the first set 6-1, confirming his dominant start to the match.

Guayaquil Ch R2: Henrique Rocha def. Juan Manuel Cerundolo [6] 7-5, 6-7(5), 3-3 ret. Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
While this match theoretically could have been ended in the most epic way possible, Juanma was unable to catch another break with the injury sustained midway the third set. Barring that, he still had equal level to H. Rocha, with a thin difference between both players except there were moments where the unseeded Portuguese appeared more powerful as he shifted the moment from 1-4 down in the second set. Through the said solid play, H. Rocha generated more break points at 13 compared to Juanma's 10 even if he converted 4% lesser than Juanma at 46% (than the latter's 50%).
Besides, each player had their service game strengths throughout this match. Even though H. Rocha landed 56% of his first serves, Juanma still won 76% of his first serve points, 9% ahead of H. Rocha, which helped him escape some problems, especially as he dominated the first half of the second set. However, Juanma's 7 double faults only faded his second serve winning percentage 10% behind H. Rocha at 34%.
In the quarterfinals, which H. Rocha finally advanced to as he played better than the last few months, he will face M. Tomas Barrios Vera, who knocked out fellow #NextGenATP Gonzalo Bueno 7-6(4), 6-2 thanks to his more experienced showing. This could be intriguing to see how far their aggression and return depth come, but it all could depend on how they handle their rhythm and execute their final shots. That adds another match to the already packed day of action across the week!

After Juanma held his serves to 1-0, there was a slight slip occurring from H. Rocha's forehand errors, which generated the former's early break to 2-0 before he consolidated the lead to 3-0. By then, the unseeded Portuguese held his serves to 3-1, and continued his strikes through a forehand winner to kick off the next game before an extended backhand down-the-line winner created his second break point. By the end of that game, H. Rocha broke back to 3-2.
However, everything became a catastrophe in the next game as Juanma tried to pull a drop shot, whose failure created H. Rocha's game point, but he injured his right wrist midway, which prompted the impromptu medical timeout. Even though H. Rocha held his serves to 3-3, a double fault on Juanma's serve indicated his inability to continue, thus the latter retired, sending H. Rocha to the quarterfinals.

The second set became a different rollercoaster because of Juanma's dominant start, but H. Rocha absorbed some pace enough in hopes to bring the former off-balance despite the result of the breaker. To start, several games after Juanma's 3 consecutive double faults foiling his game points before the massive hold to 1-0, he capitalized on H. Rocha's previous errors as he broke to 2-1 through a fourth-shot forehand down-the-line pass before he consolidated to 3-1, which happened despite the break points he faced. The Argentinean sixth seed then dominated the next game as a slick pass equalized the point before doubling the break to 4-1 only to be broken back (4-2) moments after H. Rocha's equalizing forehand winner.
H. Rocha then kept in touch with a service game hold to 4-3, but he continued through his intuitive volley finish for another equalizer before confirming the level of play by breaking back again to 4-4. Consolidating his serves to 5-4, H. Rocha somehow found himself almost crossing the finish line as he generated his match point with a working pass, but another one from Juanma saved it before he scored another gigantic hold to 5-5.
Two straight service game holds later, the tie-breaker became inevitable to determine the rest of the flow (or the second set). A +1 forehand error from H. Rocha confirmed Juanma's crucial mini-break (5-4) before the Argentinean secured his initial set point in a similar manner despite the longer rally (6-4). Even though H. Rocha's cross-court forehand winner saved one of those (6-5), his inability to find the lines to finish the next point (where his forehand was fired a little bit too long) cost him the set as Juanma took it 7-6(5), thus forcing the deciding set to determine the outcome.

The late afternoon matches of that day then continued in the Guayaquil Challenger, where sixth seed Juan Manuel Cerundolo, who knocked out alternate Renzo Olivo 6-2, 6-3 in the first round, took on Henrique Rocha, who defeated qualifier Gerard Campana Lee 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in a separate talent-off of this second round. While this match was set to be an epic for numerous reasons (including their close margin), something prevented this to happen in the middle of the third set.
After a massive hold to 1-0 to start the first set, H. Rocha's preceding forehand tried to level the play before he had an initial break point in the second game, but even if Juanma saved it with a forehand winner to force the first deuce, the latter's subsequent errors only caused the break of serve to happen (2-0). However, the moment did not last long because a working drop shot from Juanma set up his one-point lead before his forehand winners followed suit, which ultimately created his break point before a +1 backhand error from H. Rocha secured the break-back to 2-1. Afterward, Juanma leveled the play with a service game hold to 2-2.
Several games later, an erratic service game from H. Rocha, marked by some previous errors while trying to respond to Juanma's previous shots, caused the latter to break to 4-3, consolidating his position with a hold to 5-3. The Argentinean sixth seed then earned his chance to serve for the first set, but H. Rocha took advantage of his tightness and broke back to 5-5 moments after his shot winner paving the way due to Juanma's unforced error. Even if a successful lob from Juanma forced the deuce, H. Rocha still held his game to 6-5.
In the twelfth game, H. Rocha tried to strike Juanma back as his preceding forehand equalized the point before he fumbled Juanma's game point in a similar manner. Somehow, the unseeded Portuguese had a set point, which was immediately converted due to another error to 7-5, securing himself the perfect (despite some rocky beginnings) start to the match.

Guayaquil Ch F: Alejandro Tabilo [5] def. Daniel Elahi Galan [2/WC] 6-2, 6-2 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
It was a statement, dominant win from Tabilo. Galan had his moments, especially when his preceding shot mostly resulted in Tabilo’s unforced error (thus his 7 break points), but Tabilo maximized more of his chances through his shot winners, which mostly were the down-the-line finishes, most of which secured his 5 breaks out of his 6 opportunities to break. Furthermore, Tabilo appeared consistent on serve with his 63% service game winning percentage from both his first and second serves (despite his 3 double faults), complemented by his 7 aces, while Galan’s first serves appeared more vulnerable with only 41% winning percentage, hence it became attack-prone since Tabilo appeared more aggressive and deep among the two.
This marked Tabilo’s third Challenger title of the year after the Francavilla al Mare and Karlsruhe Challengers, putting himself 9 lines to the Top 100 live upon the conclusion of the tournament. On the other hand, Galan’s other Challenger title have to wait, and the South American Challengers will continue to the Lima 2 Challenger next week, where the first qualifying rounds already commenced.

Even though Galan tried his best to press Tabilo from the baseline, which included a cross-court backhand winner to foil one of Tabilo’s earlier game points, Tabilo still stood his ground and held that service game earlier in the second set. It took four holds in general until Tabilo finally took his chances and broke to 3-2 thanks to a stellar backhand pass right after Galan’s forehand error securing the latest break point. Even though there were some hurdles in between, Tabilo held his service game 4-2.
Somehow, Tabilo’s exceptional returning carried the rallies of the second set. Here, a backhand winner secured his one-point lead before his break point was converted out of his counter-smash, which turned out to be in as a response to Galan’s smash at the net to 5-2. As a result, Tabilo had the chance to serve for the second set, where he successfully sealed it to 6-2 with a forehand down-the-line winner, hence winning his third Challenger title of the year after the Francavilla al Mare and Karlsruhe Challengers.

📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
Fresh from his Men’s Doubles silver medal achievement in the Pan-American Games, fifth seed Alejandro Tabilo cruised to the finals of the Guayaquil Challenger, including stunning first seed Federico Coria 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals before defeating Roman Andres Burruchaga 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals, got second seed and wild card Daniel Elahi Galan, who defeated seventh seed Felipe Meligeni R. Alves 6-4, 7-6(5) and got past sixth seed Hugo Dellien 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Knowing their aggression and return depth, this could be a tricky match, but Tabilo got everything according to plan thanks to his aggressive showing in the first set.
The solid showing started right after two consecutive holds, where Tabilo started pressing through the lines on his rally finishings. One of those, which down-the-line winner from the second point of that game opened the path before Galan’s +1 forehand error resulted in that eventual break to 2-1. Somehow, Galan found a way to break back after Tabilo’s backhand error created his break point before its conversion at the cost of his shank to Galan’s preceding backhand (2-2). Tabilo immediately responded by breaking back again to 3-2 at the cost of Galan’s double fault.
Tabilo proceeded to consolidate to 4-2 after a rocky road, and somehow found a way to break back again thanks to his forehand down-the-line winner to finish a rally to secure another one-point lead before he eventually broke to 5-2. That way, Tabilo had an opportunity to serve for the first set, where he did without any further ado, sealing it with a forehand winner for his +1 (6-2), denoting his aggressive dominance during the match.
