My sister and I did our big bike event. Except, we didn’t do it all the way, because her chain started falling off and kept doing it, and when we got in to one of the stops and had a mechanic look at it, he was able to take out one link of the chain but said basically her bike was set up in a strange way, and actually it’s A Thing - she has a Surly Preamble, which apparently comes with a single speed chainring but it’s not single speed, so they’re notorious for dropping their chains! I’ve now googled and can confirm - people have to get a different "narrow-wide" chainring for it as a matter of course, so PSA to any of you considering this bike!

So anyway, at that point we’d done 25 miles of 37, and the mechanic said "you have to be careful and keep it in a really low gear on downhills, but it will probably be fine" …but we didn’t like "be careful" and "probably," and she was all rattled from how much it had happened, ALSO it was 86 degrees out and the course was super hilly, so we decided to just call it and get course support to give us a ride back. Which was a very nice service - it was a really well supported ride. So anyway, we definitely still worked hard and were tired, but also a little bummed and embarrassed, but also RELIEVED, like when we pulled into that last stop, it was very apparent that as soon as we got back on the road it would be an immediate very steep climb, so…yeah pretty thrilled that we did not have to do that! In any case, it was the biggest event I’ve ever participated in and it was fun and cool and does make me want to do more.
