oh thank goodness im glad im not the only person with issues w/ the mechs mixing... i have audio-visual synesthesia and HNOC's was so rough in places it killed me....... agree ties that bind is absolutely unlistenable

i think because HNOC is a lil overambitious. which is not bad. my critique is never to say its bad, but that because its ambitions, it falters on legibility. HNOC is the one i had to literally look up the lyrics to understand WTF was happening. all the others made perfect sense just from the listen.

this is why i actually think UDAD is a better album. more simplistic, but better executed imo.

also i love the production quality jump on TBI because frankly it needed it to pull off that ambitious of a fucking story

Dune Part 1 - Second Viewing Review

So I watched Dune for a second time today because I was keen to see if my viewing experience changed dramatically, as I thought it might on 2nd viewing. Overall, while I would say my opinion of the movie rose a bit, it was very slight and the film is still overall a little disappointing to me. In the end, the positives and negatives are the same. What you really remember from the movie is the visuals and the art design. That really takes your breath away. I did get a bit more of an appreciation of Jason Momoa 2nd time around. He's a breath of fresh air and energy in an otherwise solemn world. But the last 40-50 minutes are still a slog for me. Apart from the visual of the Sandworm towards the end, I was honestly bored with everything that came after the fall of House Atreides and Leto's death. I genuinely found myself getting annoyed at that little fight between Paul and Jamis. I know its a big moment for Paul as a character, but by that time I really wanted the movie to be over and it felt like it was just prolonging the movie. I honestly think this film should have cut out a lot of the bloat after the fall of House Atreides. Maybe just end on a cliffhanger of the Fremen finding Paul and Jessica. Part 1 could have been a tight 2 hour or 2 hour 10 min movie with Duncan's death acting as the big climax moment of the movie.

I do admit I am a little confused by some of the visions in the movie. Maybe some Dune experts can clarify this. So is Paul able to see just potential futures? Because he seemed to see Chaani stabbing him, Jamis killing him, Jamis training him etc... which didn't happen and doesn't seem like it will happen. He also said "not exactly" to the Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother when she asked him if he sees things happen exactly as they transpire. So I guess what he sees can be significantly different and open to interpretation in actuality?

Anyways, despite my issues with the movie, it was worth watching on the big screen. Its just not a movie that I feel I will revisit much because I don't think it lends itself to streaming. Plus, it doesn't really have the sort of entertainment value that other big epic movies do. But it is quite a cinematic achievement and I'm glad it has a part 2 announced now because this would have been a very frustrating movie to watch in isolation. I think this film fell victim to my love for Blade Runner 2049, which was just so awesome for me, that my expectations were too high. I don't think any performance in this film hit me the way Gosling, Ford, Ana de Armas, or Sylvia Hoeks did in that film and the pacing just worked a lot better in that movie, even though BR2049 is also deliberately paced. This film lands around a 6.5-7 overall, which is still solid.
