The Dakota Access pipeline is funded directly by 17 banks, many of which—Citibank, Wells Fargo—are ones you’ve probably heard of or do business with.

Banks are more susceptible to public pressure than the oil and gas giants.

Researchers with the nonprofit Food & Water Watch found that 38 banking institutions are involved in funding the proposed Bakken pipeline, which would stretch from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. A section of this project is the Dakota Access pipeline, where the Standing Rock Sioux and thousands of allies have physically put themselves in the path of the pipeline to protect their reservation and a stretch of the Missouri River.

Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org, recently wrote an article for YES! suggesting that banks are more susceptible to public pressure than the oil and gas giants, which depend on bank loans and lines of credit to build their pipelines. “It’s probably sustained public pressure that will do the most good,” he wrote.

Wondering what to say to a bank executive?Food & Water Watch researcher Hugh MacMillan: “Ask these banks to clarify whether funds they are providing are being used, in any amount, to pay for the heavily militarized response to the Standing Rock Sioux, including the attack dogs, sound-cannon trucks, heavily armed officers.”

The past few days had been... absolute hell for everyone involved. Buck getting struck by lightning, dying and the hospital stay. She had barely slept this week herself. On top of everything going on with Buck now their apartment was chock full of visitors. Maddie, Chimney, their parents, Nova. Not to mention the rest of the fire fam that had stopped by periodically. It was no wonder Buck was exhausted.

"Do you want me to be the bad guy? Kick everyone out?" Nova asked, quietly. "And then leave myself, obviously."

Nova moved away instinctively when the spoon first came into view. She hadn’t been paying attention to what Jane was saying, or doing, she’d been working on a drawing in her sketchbook. She looked from the spoon with a small scoop of red sauce on it, to Jane’s face before reaching to take the spoon from him. As she held it, her other hand held out beneath to catch any potential drippings, she briefly glanced back at Jane before she tasted the scoop of sauce. It was sauce alright, tomato-y, sauce. She nodded as she placed the spoon on the counter beside her. 

“Tastes okay,” She replied, picking her sketchbook back up again.

The music had switched from some fast pop song Nova wasn't quite familiar with to something with a slower tempo. A smile tugged at the corner of Nova's mouth as she placed her hand in Sean's open palm.

"You may..." She said, bashfully, a slight pink tinge to her cheeks as the two of them walked out to the dance floor.

Nova never really liked parties. Well, she never liked Jenna's parties, especially her costume parties. Nova barely like the concept of Halloween, much less dressing up in anything Jenna liked to wear. Yet practically every year when the season rolled away Jenna would always insist that she needed Nova help trying on and picking out costumes. And practically every year Nova would fall for it, try something on for her sister and then be dragged to a party.

This year was no different, and in the grand scheme of things neither was the costume. Every year it was always something "sexy" that hugged Nova's curves, or showed too much leg, or cleevage, or all of it at once. This particular time Nova was in a sleek looking black romper with yellow reflective belt, and red o-ring suspenders. Even without the childish plastic hat it was very obvious what this costume was supposed to be.

Nova stood at the back of the venue Jenna had rented for this party- some late birthday celebration for some friend Nova barely knew. Her arms wrapped awkwardly around her stomach, as she tapped the heel of her cherry boots to the beat of the music. Her eyes scanned the crowd only to surprisely land on Buck standing not too far from her.

The look on their face was painfully obvious, and if it hadn't their eyes trailing down her body would've been a dead give away all on its own. Nova felt her face flush a deep red as Buck walked to stand beside her.

"Shut up," she said. Preemptively, of course. Buck hadn't even had a chance to open their mouth.

Nova sat in the sand, staring out at the waves as they erratically crashed into the shore. The ocean around this island was never exactly particularly peaceful, but in the storm it definitely got crazier than normal. There was something a little mesmerizing about it. So much so that Nova jumped at the sound of Hurley's voice as it cut through the rain.

"I survived a plane crashed, lost my most prized possession, and I'm stuck on the world's spookiest deserted island with a crap load of strangers... and a... former celebrity crush," Nova mused. Her voice was hoarse. It was the most words that she had spoken in a week since the plane went down. She pulled her knees to her chest, and tugged the soaked hoodie sleeves over her hands. If the rain was good for one thing, at least it cooled her down. "I'm not gonna like... walk into the ocean if that's what you're asking."

Nova bounded down the steps from Buck's bedroom as she zipped up one of their hoodies, only to stop in her tracks as she noticed them glance over at her from the kitchen. She fiddled with the hem of both sleeves, as well as the one at the bottom of the hoodie. Buck wasn't really that much taller than herself, but they were extremely muscular, which was enough to make it that Nova was being swallowed whole by the hoodie.

"I was cold..." was all she could say in her own defense.
