Tsukasa: (Good, this set of Yumenosaki assignments are done. I’ll just need to memorize the script for my next job, and I would’ve completed all of my tasks for today.)

(Even though there’s still plenty of time before the formal rehearsal, it’s safer to prepare in advance… just to make sure nothing goes wrong.)

(Moreover, Onee-sama is also looking forward to our performance. For Onee-sama, and for the countless supporters of us Knights… we must do our best. Slacking off is not an option.)

(…Be as it may, I have been working non-stop for a few hours now, and am becoming rather distracted.)

(From this year onwards, I’ve been gradually taking over various family businesses. Even though it’s been smooth-sailing, and while I do have the determination and confidence in my abilities to preserve the glory of my family… I haven’t quite adjusted to the sudden shift of roles.)

(Besides, there have been many newcomers joining Knights, and as a result I expended quite a fair bit of energy. With all these pressures stacking on each other, my personal time has been constantly reduced… I don’t even have time for my solo training.)

(So I’ve decided to take advantage of my rest day and hide in this secluded corner all by myself to catch up on the tasks that I’ve fallen behind on.)

(But humans aren’t robots built with steel. We’re bound to feel tired after working for hours on end.)

(Then again, daydreaming here won’t benefit me in the future. It’s better to memorise the script and head home as soon as possible.)

Ritsu: ——don’t let the light disrupt my slumber.

Tsukasa: ……?!

(Huuu, how dangerous… I was so startled I almost screamed. That would simply be too ungentlemanly. Just who would be ungraceful enough to hide somewhere secluded just to scare me on purpose?)

Ritsu: …And here I was wondering about who’s the one kicking up a fuss. It’s you, Suu~chan?

Tsukasa: Ritsu-senpai? When did you come here?

Ritsu: Lemme think~ Probably when the sun wasn’t so bright? The summer sun is rather poisonous; it’s impossible to sleep soundly like this.

In any case, Suu~chan, it’s so much more convenient with you here. Could you move to your left just a tiny little bit? That way, you’ll block out the sun that’s shining directly on my face~

Tsukasa: Ritsu-senpai, please do not use me as a sunshade.

Ritsu: Boo, why not? I’m not letting the height you gained this year go to waste though?

Tsukasa: That is the evidence of my physical growth. Would it not be easier for you to stand, when compared to me blocking the sunlight for you? If you continue to lie here, you will merely be a hindrance to pedestrians.

Ritsu: Sigh… how troublesome… it’s already this late, though, so I might as well get up~

Tsukasa: About what you said just now… you mentioned you were sleeping here early in the morning, right? So does that mean… Ritsu-senpai, you got here earlier than I did?

Ritsu: Probably. When I was sleeping, I suddenly heard the non-stop rustling of paper. The second I woke up, I saw you reciting lines. So, I didn’t hide in here to scare you on purpose~

Tsukasa: Cough. Even though I was not scared, playing pranks is not something a knight should be doing. Hearing Ritsu-senpai say that puts me at ease.

Tsukasa: Forgive me for my bluntness, but Ritsu-senpai is able to sleep soundly no matter where he is.

And I really do miss Haa~kun’s floral teas. Sniff sniff… What a calming fragrance.

Hajime: I did bring some floral tea. Ritsu-senpai, you could smell it?

Ritsu: Cat’s noses have always been very good~ the same goes for vampires. Other than the aroma of the floral tea, there’s also another fragrance – something sweet and delicious. What is it?

Hajime: On the way here I happened to chance upon Mitsuru-kun’s favourite bread shop, so I bought some for us. They’re not expensive or anything, but they taste pretty good.

When Maa~kun’s not around, I’m always alone.

The book earlier this afternoon – the ‘cookbook’ was merely a cover. It’s actually a ‘book of magic’.

If you want to call forth a ‘miracle’, you’d need to go to a source of water that can foster the appearance of fireflies – that’s what the book said, and that’s why I’m here to collect water.

The ‘magic’ seems to be really powerful too. I wonder who left these kinds of books on the ‘floor’?

Luckily, it’s me who found it first. Normal people who pick this up may end up losing their way. Super duper dangerous ♪

Sigh… It’s really not because the water in this stream is most suitable for making sweets. I’ve literally never heard of fireflies liking clear and sweet water.

That’s quite a rude thought.

What a defiant expression. As it is, I have no intention of squabbling with a teenager, so how about I tell you a little more?

‘Producer’, did you know that fireflies are the spirits of the deceased?

The reason why sacrifical ceremonies are held during ‘Firefly Appreciation’ is precisely to appease the spirits of those who have passed on.

I’m not lying to you. Look – don’t you think the flickering of the fireflies resemble that of will-o’-the-wisps?

Who knows, maybe a lot of people have met their end here?

Because of the unnecessary grudges that you humans hold… or perhaps accidentally hitting their head on the rocks and falling into the water with an “Aaah—” ♪

All of these deceased still have lingering attachments to ‘this side’ of the world; after their passing, they’re reluctant to enter the cycle of reincarnation[1], and instead choose to wander amongst the humans.

As such, they’re able to exist almost like a living human, even though they’re already dead. Their remaining brilliance could add a touch of warmth to the world, and the thoughts that have yet to be expressed could be conveyed to some extent—

Hm? Of course, that’s impossible ♪

The light from the fireflies and will-o’-the-wisps are the same – they lack warmth.

‘That world’ and ‘this world’ are isolated from each other, destined to be left without means of communication. Just like how my world is incompatible with yours.

The souls of the dead can only wander alone, forever unable to break through the invisible barriers.

Even so……

Guess I should say he’s an idiot…? Heheh, it’s like I’m the only one who shouldn’t be saying that ♪

All in all, it’s supposed to be a very very very difficult task, something that’s simply impossible to achieve.

But still, he said something about wanting to drag me into that warmer world too.

I don’t really remember anymore… I think I’ve rejected him before, and I probably did stop quite a few times along the way.

And even went as far as to hurt him.

But he never gave up, and has been working hard every single day.

Why did he do this…? The reason is no longer important.

I… Even though I don’t want to admit it… It’s thanks to my brother that I, at the very least, am able to understand this one thing.

For someone else to treat me like that… I can’t not respond to the benevolence and the expectations that have been placed upon me. Cowering in my own little world isn’t an option either.

It’s precisely because I’m an old person who isn’t getting any younger – that’s why there are things that I particularly don’t want to lose, ideas that I sincerely hope to pass on.

Only teenagers would think that they have unlimited amounts of time and an infinite number of chances…

If you blindly cling onto other people’s intiatives… It doesn’t matter how passionate the other party is. You’ll be left disappointed and burnt out at the very end.

Although I do fear a lot of things… What I hate the most, would be to become something akin to those ‘lingering ghosts without a family to pray for them’[2], ghosts who can only wander around in vain.

So, I thought to start with things I’m already an expert in, and try to reach out.

It’ll be fine, ‘Producer’, there’s no need to worry. You’ve eaten them before, yes? The cakes that I’ve baked ♪

Their appearance may be a little shocking to you, but I’m confident as long as you try a bite ♪

You think so too? I’m relieved. Because ‘Producer’ has always been awfully close to Maa~kun.

You’ve been close to him the day you transferred to our school, you’ve been close to him during ‘DDD’, and you’re close to him even now.

But, I don’t know why… Recently, I’ve started to feel that it’s okay if it’s you, ‘Producer’.

So… Whatever I told you just now, you need to help me keep it a secret from Maa~kun, okay?

I only told you all of this because I trust you wholeheartedly ♪

If, somehow, Maa~kun finds out about it… I’ll use other methods to punish you, ‘Producer’. I know more than one type of ‘magic’…… ☆

You promise? As expected, ‘Producer’ really is a good kid, mhm, there there ♪

Turns out that there’s nothing in ‘this world’ that will remain unchanging… be it creatures, humans, or interpersonal relationships.

Summer has only just begun, but it’ll be over in the blink of an eye.

Things that remain unchanged… they’ll lose out on time, and they are unable to welcome the future. Eventually, they’ll be abandoned by ‘this world’.

Aah, my goodness. To me… there’s probably nothing more troublesome than what I’ve just said… ♪
