Real life aside, the only in-story explanation I've got for Lucas's sudden feelings for Brooke is he tried to move on from Peyton when he thought they were never going to happen. He thought she moved on and saw her hung up on Jake, so he tried to move on as well. Obviously, his subconscious felt otherwise. I'd like to read what you think.

we know lucas throws himself into other things when its not working out with peyton (hello, look at season 5). there is literally no canon reason for lucas to have gone to brooke in season 2. nathan telling lucas he has feelings for a girl just in general comes out of the blue, not to mention how the literal next scene is peyton, which is generally a visual cue. and lucas keeping a Peyton box in his closet and we’re supposed to believe he just “forgot”???? yeah, because in media when someone is keeping a box of their exes shit that always means theyve moved on. please.

it makes perfect sense that lucas wouldve seen peyton wanting jake and backed off. id even compare it to peyton going to jake in season 3 to try and silence her feelings for lucas while he was with brooke. a big thing for leyton was timing. they were always horrible at it. and season 2 very much falls in line with that narrative. 

with both relationships (j*yton in s3 and br*cas in s2), it was like lucas and peyton were just falling in line with what they thought needed to happen at the time. lucas even says himself in season 4 that after all the missed connections he felt like maybe they werent meant to be. so after all the events of season 1, now you have single lucas, finally getting back on track with peyton (them having the scene about him being absent from her life recently and him wanting to step up and make a better effort), but peytons still hung up on jake even though hes away. it was just another instance of timing not being on their side. and lucas knows brooke and felix arent anything serious so hes probably thinking she’s gonna be an easy in (which, once again, go back to season 1 and he literally says being with brooke is easier. what romance.) but then of course brooke and felix decide to get serious that one night lmao the universe is not on lucas scotts side. so now he’s backed himself into a corner cuz hes reached out to jake for peytons sake, so now he cant be with either one of them. and as much as i would rather have leyton be together in every season, ultimately peyton got her moment to be happy with jake. and at the end of the day peyton sawyers happiness is my top priority so im glad she was allowed to have her moment. what SHOULDVE happened in season 2 is that lucas and brooke shouldve just remained single. it wouldve done lucas some good to have to sit back and watch peyton be with someone else for a change and be the one miserable. and brooke was getting this whole independent woman, i dont need no man storyline so what was the purpose of putting her in a relationship anyway? it was all ch*phia fanservice. because those two were married everyone needed to see them be a couple on screen and it fucked everything up
