Focus, as her former master had taught, was life or death. Lack of was life or death. Irress was life or death.

Ilya deigned not to dwell on Irress in company of the Council. That was death. It was an ancient gut-wrench of an instinct born from one mortifying perception, for thoughts of Irress had a weight. A presence. Not a window through the Force but a door cracked open. The door should have been deadbolt. The door should have been sealed.

This was the fear: that someone would notice.

Worse: that someone would not.

Something was wrong with Ilya. She would die before letting it show.
