Sailor-Aviator's Christmas Writing Challenge
Hello, hello! I wanted to try something a little fun for the holidays, so I figured why not host a little writing challenge! I've never hosted one of these, so this should be fun for all of us! Let's get started!
The Concept
I will have a list of holiday buzzwords with three slots available! Once all three slots are taken, then that's it! No more entries will be allowed for that word/phrase! As much as I love the holidays, I don't want to read twenty fics about the first snow. Just send me a DM/Ask letting me know that you want to participate and which word/phrase you'll be using and with which TGM character!
The Rules
You may sign up for more than one slot as long as there are slots available. However, you can not take up two slots for the same word/phrase.
Tag your fics appropriately! (Angst, smut, fluff, warnings, etc.)
18+ ONLY!
This can be a series, a one-shot, moodboards, or even a collection of drabbles! Just have fun with it!
You MUST use your word/phrase in some way in the fic. For example, if your word is reindeer, you could write about going to feed reindeer, or you could write about dressing up as a reindeer, or you could write about a reindeer sweater, etc.
HAVE FUN!!!
Your fics (with the exception of series) are due by the end of the day on December 25th!! When you are finished (or started the series/collection), you can shoot me the link so I can tag it below. Also, please tag me in the fic and tag the challenge! The more the merrier!
Tagging who I think might be interested: @goldenseresinretriever @bobgasm @hangmansgbaby @jupitercomet @mamachasesmayhem @seresinhangmanjake @blue-aconite @rosedurin but obviously anyone is free to join!
Word/Phrases below the cut!

Golden Hour || Ch. 10
[Bob Floyd x Bradley Bradshaw x OC]
A Bob Floyd & Bradley Bradshaw AU [Hart of Dixie inspired]
Synopsis: Willow, Georgia. Barely even a town, just a speck on a map that you tried to wipe off, mistaking it for a crumb. You’re the outsider: a fancy New York doctor, fresh out of a failed engagement, with zero primary care experience. You’re also the new town doctor, taking over for a recent retiree who was beloved. His son, Bob Floyd, is the other physician at the practice, and takes an immediate dislike to you. But you were looking for a fresh start, and Willow doesn’t seem all that bad if you can get past the fact that there's only one restaurant in town. It helps that you've caught the eye of Bradley Bradshaw, the town attorney, despite the fact that you vowed to take a break from dating. How long until you start to make friends in a town where social circles have been set in stone since elementary school? And what will it take to make Bob Floyd see you’re not as bad as he wants to believe you are?
Pairing: Bob Floyd x OC; Bradley Bradshaw x OC
Tropes: Love triangle, enemies to lovers
Warnings: Angst, cursing, alcohol
Chapter summary: Bradley invites Bob and Olive to dinner. Olive and Bob have a real conversation following their spontaneous kiss
WC: 2K
Masterlist here; previous chapter here
The office was busy by the time you showed up. You were late on purpose, because the earlier you showed up the more likely you were to run into Bob.
“Dr. James.” Molly was frazzled. You frowned as she showed a handful of paperclipped charts in your arms. “You’re late. We have five patients waiting for you.”
“Give me two minutes and then send the first person in.” You turned, trying not to look up as you made your way into your office. Closing the door, you collapsed into your desk chair. On the other side of the wall, you heard Bob’s voice, low murmurs. A shiver crawled up your back.
And then the door swung open. “Doc!”
“Mr. Peterson,” you said, standing up. “What’s bothering you today?”
He grunted and sat down, heavily, on the exam table. “This bum hip, like always.”
You snapped on a pair of gloves and turned to him. “Alright, let’s see what’s going on.”
The day was chock full of patients. Mr. Peterson’s arthritic hip, two cases of spider bites, one kid with pink eye, an ice cream shop worker with carpal tunnel.
It was well after seven by the time you stood up and inched your door open, peering around. The hallway was empty, Molly was gone. You breathed out a sigh of relief, grabbing your purse and shutting your office door. But just as you turned, a shadow crossed the floor and you looked up.
Bob looked like a deer in headlights. He had one hand on the doorknob to his office, his hair tousled. “Dr. James,” he said, voice low and rough. You remembered what his hands felt like on your neck, his lips on yours.
Your voice gasped a little. “Bob.”
His blue eyes flashed for a moment and you weren’t sure if it was excitement or anger flooding his features. And then all of the light drained out of his eyes and he turned, breezing past you, practically running out the door once again.
***
You were sitting on a barstool at Breakers, nursing a glass of white boxed wine, when a pair of hands wrapped around your shoulders, causing you to gasp.
Bradley spun you around on the chair, a grin spread wide across his face. He leaned down and kissed you, in front of everyone, leaving you gasping for air as he pulled back.
“Hey there, Doc,” he said, settling onto the seat next to you. “Miss me?”
You crossed your legs, hooking one heel into the bottom bar of his stool and Bradley placed a large, warm hand on your bare thigh. “Of course.”
He grinned. “What did you get up to while I was gone?”
You hesitated. On the other side of the bar, Phoenix was watching the two of you, polishing a glass from a few feet away, her dark hair swept up in a ponytail. You shrugged. “Oh not much. Just work, you know. Lots of patients, had to do some filing and admin.”
Bradley frowned. “Admin? I hope Floyd isn’t pushing you too hard.”
The memory of Bob’s kiss flitted across your mind. The way his hand had felt on the back of your neck, tugging you forward with reckless abandon. “No,” you whispered. “He’s been great.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Great? So the two of you are finally getting along?”
“Um, yeah, I think so.”
Bradley pulled his hand from your thigh and smiled, tugging his phone out and placing it on the bar. “Perfect. Then let’s do dinner, the three of us. My place.”
“Oh, no, I—”
“He’s a good guy,” Bradley interrupted. “And we’ve been friends for a long time. So I’d love if the three of us could hang out.”
There was something finite about his words. He had made up his mind. You nodded. “OK, sure. Dinner.”
***
Standing at Bradley’s doorstep, you raised one hand to knock before taking a deep breath. And then you lowered your fist and let out the breath.
What the hell were you doing? Why was this so uncomfortable? You had slept with Bradley once, and kissed Bob once. Did either of them mean anything? You weren’t exclusive with Bradley, you weren’t even dating. You weren’t sure what you were.
On the other hand, Bob Floyd acted like you didn’t exist 99% of the time. The other 1% of the time he was actively hating you.
So why should you care if it was weird for him to see you and Bradley together?
“Are you going to knock, or do you expect the door to fly open through telekinesis?”
You whirled around. Bob stood a few steps down on the pathway, holding a bottle of wine. HIs face was unreadable.
“I was going to knock,” you said.
Bob stepped closer and you caught a whiff of his soap – minty and herbal – and leaned over, knocking on the door sharply, his eyes never leaving yours.
The door swung open a second later, Bradley standing barefoot with a kitchen towel slung over one shoulder. “Hey guys, come on in.”
Bob held out a hand and you stepped inside first, the sound of your heels clacking against the wooden floor. To your surprise, Bradley leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to your lips. A blush crept over your face and neck, and you averted your eyes from him or Bob.
“Is that for tonight?” Bob nodded, handing over the bottle of wine. “NIce, thanks man. Come on in.”
You scampered behind Bradley, unable to meet Bob’s gaze, wandering into the kitchen where he had a bowl of guacamole out and some chips. Instinctively, you dragged a chip through the green dip and shoved it into your face to prevent talking. Nerves were bubbling at the surface of your skin.
“How was the trial?” Bob’s voice surprised you. He was a man of so few words, so having him lead the conversation was shocking.
Bradley stood at the stove, stirring a pot of beans. “Long,” he replied. “Tedious, as always.” There was a pause. Then, “Anything happen while I was gone?”
Was it you, or did the air in the room shift? You quickly shoved another tortilla chip in your mouth to cover the silence. Bob put one hand on the counter, not too far from where you sat hunched over the bowl of chips. “Not much,” he replied, nonchalant. “Usual Willow drama.”
Bradley raised an eyebrow. “Drama?”
You practically choked on the chip.
Bob looked at you before responding, “The Mayfields are at it again.”
Relief, hot like vodka, spread through your body. Bradley laughed. “Really? I don’t want to have to oversee the third divorce.”
“Third?” you asked.
He nodded, but Bob’s voice was the one that cut through the kitchen air. “Mr. and Mrs. Mayfield got divorced probably ten years ago, and then promptly had an affair together and got pregnant. They got married again before the baby was born, but divorced when Anna turned three.”
“So they’re divorced?”
“Nope, got together again a few years later. But from the sounds of it, divorce number three might be incoming.”
“This town should be its own sitcom,” you said, lifting the glass of wine that Bradley had poured to your lips.
“So have you changed your mind about our little town, Doc?” Bradley asked, turning around pouring Bob another scotch. You hadn’t even seen him pour the first one.
You shrugged. “It’s no New York.”
“Nothing is.” Bradley put the wooden spoon down. “Floyd, remember that time you came to visit me at Columbia?”
You frowned. Bob had gone to New York? You couldn’t picture him in the city. With all the suits and fast walking and snippy baristas. He would stick out like a sore thumb in his jeans and button down shirts, his Southern twang.
Bob nodded. “I still think about that Korean chicken place you brought me to.”
Bradley laughed. “Wow, Koreatown. I haven’t thought of that in ages.”
You leaned on the counter and watched them. There was something so casual and easy about the way they spoke with each other. It was the first time it dawned on you that they had been friends for years.
And you were getting in the middle of a friendship.
Dinner was delicious, with black beans sauteed with bacon and pork belly tacos and margaritas so strong your head started to buzz halfway through the meal.
Before you realized it, you and Bob were standing in the doorway again.
“Thanks for dinner,” Bob said, reaching out and clapping Bradley on the shoulder.
Bradley grinned. “Anytime Floyd.” He turned to you, leaning in, his lips brushing against your ear. “You should stay.”
You pulled back, face frozen, head shaking. “I have a lot of work in the morning,” you whispered. “But I’ll call you.”
He nodded as Bob opened the door and the two of you were ushered out into the cool night. Before you could even squeak out a word, Bob was halfway down the driveway, speeding toward his house next door. You broke out into practically a jog behind him, running up the stairs to his house in heels. “Floyd!”
He whipped around, eyes wide, one hand on the door. He was silent.
You crossed your arms over your chest, suddenly cold. “So this is it?” you asked. “You’re just going to run away every time you see me? What the hell is going on?” you demanded. “Do you take it back?”
Those last words came out as a sharp whisper. Bob reached out, grabbing your arm and pulling you around the front porch of the house to the opposite side, so you were out of view of Bradley’s home.
Even when the two of you rounded the corner, his fingers didn’t leave your skin. Instead, he stepped closer, until you could feel the heat radiating off of his muscular body. “No,” he said gruffly. “I don’t want to take it back.”
“Then what?” you pleaded. “What do you want?”
“Take a wild guess, Olive.” Bob cocked his head to one side.
“I don’t know.”
“Yes, you do.” His voice forced a chill through your bones, a tingling settling in between your legs. “You’re a smart girl,” he whispered. “I think you know.”
Your chest heaved uncontrollably. No one had ever looked at you the way Bob Floyd was looking at you in that moment. Not Bradley. Not Peter. Not any of the men you had dated in the past. It was all consuming. It threatened to swallow you whole.
“We always want what we can’t have,” Bob murmured, letting his fingertips drop from your arm. “That’s human nature, I guess.”
“Is that your diagnosis, Doctor?”
He nodded.
You shook your head. “In my professional opinion, it’s better to tell the truth than to hide how you feel.”
“So you’re a psychiatrist now?” he murmured.
“God, never.”
Bob grinned. He lifted one arm, placing it on the siding of the house behind your head, creating a triangle with his body, practically pinning you against the house. You looked up, eyes wide. “Bradley is my best friend,” he whispered. “And you’re my business partner.”
“Almond milk isn’t real milk.”
He frowned. “What?”
“I thought we were just listing facts.”
Bob shook his head and grunted. He was exasperated with you. You were all too familiar with that. “Jesus Chris, Livvy, I swear—”
You interrupted him. “Livvy?” No one had ever called you that before.
His eyes flashed. “I mean Olive.” He flushed.
You shook your head. “I like it.”
Bob leaned down, letting his free hand cup your cheek. “Livvy,” he murmured.
“Yes?”
“Shut up and let me kiss you.”

CH 1. Sin City
Summary: The daggers arrive in Las Vegas and it's just the beginning. Jake sets his sights on a girl he has to get know. Natasha meets an old friend and catches up.
Notes: Mentions of Alcohol, nothing too bad 18+ MINORS DNI
Word Count: 2.3k
Bradley, Jake and Bob were starting to get antsy. Knowing they should wait for the rest of the squad to join, the excitement of Vegas was starting to seep its way into the minds of Jake and Bradley. “We know where we’re all going to end up tonight so we might as well get a jump on the fun and go somewhere. It’s pointless to wait for the other three.” Jake suggested from the bathroom. “For once you are absolutely right Bagman. I heard this place called House of Blues is supposed to be a cool place, let’s start there and see where we are before we meet up with everyone else.” Bradley added. “I don’t know guys it would be fun to get out of the room, but shouldn’t we wait?” Bob asked cautiously. “Come on Floyd, I bet even you get laid this trip, the sooner we start the better chances you have.” Jake quipped. “Yeah Bob, and it’s not like we are going to go score drugs or head to a strip club, it’s the House of Blues, we’ll listen to some music and figure the rest out.” Bradley added. “I guess there is no harm in getting out onto the strip. Alright let’s go” Bob said putting on his shirt “Whoo!” Both Rooster and Hangman cried out. After five minutes the trio headed to The House of Blues.
After finding open seats at the bar the three men settle on a corner that faced the stage. While waiting for the next act Jake ordered beers for himself and Bradley and a ginger ale for Bob. “Here ya go boys,” the bartender said to them “First one is on the house for our fine military men.” the lady said as she walked away. “Looks like our luck has just started boys.” Bradley let out. “Please welcome to the stage long time favorite Maya Atwell.” A voice over the speakers announced. A tall slender women walked out onto the stage. Her unruly hair tucked into a ball cap that was placed backwards on her head let the crowd see her soft features and her blue eyes. “Hi everyone, how’s everyone’s night going?” The sultry voice asked. The crowd responded with a chorus of woos, whistles and hands clapping. “Those of you who are new, I’m Maya and I can play just about any song, for those of you who know the drill welcome on back. Let’s give a huge round of applause to Mike the owner slash manager and to the fine ladies you see around here serving.” Maya waited for the crowd to follow her orders and for the cheering to die down. “Normally I take requests, but I have plans later tonight so I’m going to be doing a short set of covers tonight. This first one” She continues as she tuned her guitar “Is by my favorite man in black. As always if you know it sing along and if you don’t I want you on your feet dancing. This is Walk the Line by Johnny Cash.” The sultry voice that was speaking to the crowd was not the same powerhouse voice that started on the song. Jake, Bradley, and Bob were all amazed. They stood in front of their stools and sang along with Maya. When the song finished the crowd erupted into applause. “I can’t believe a girl like that knows Johnny Cash” Jakes yelled to his counterparts. “Yeah, she’s something.” Bob added. “Alright this next one is one I love listening to growing up, this is for all of you who are infected with Beatlemania.” The singer started playing Hey Jude. “Damn bro, she is versatile. Who goes from Cash to The Beatles!” Bradley asked his friends. By the end of the song the singer had stopped playing and let the crowd finish out the song. “Okay” Coaxed the singer. “Last one for the night, this is one that I hold dear to my heart it was the first one I learned to play, and I hope I do it justice.” As soon as she started the first notes Jake recognized the song right away “Now she’s playing Nirvana! I have to meet this girl!” As Maya finished Come As You Are, everyone was on their feet applauding her. “Thank You House of Blues! Don’t forget to tip your waitresses.”
The singer exited the stage and appeared on the other side of the bar. “Let’s go meet her.” Jake suggested. “You’re crazy if you think I’m going to go talk to the girl who can command the whole place like that.” Bob interjected. “Come on Bob, what kind of wing man are you?” Jake asked “I’m not a wing man I’m a weapons system operator” Bob responded dryly. “Look do me this favor and I can owe you anything, anywhere, any time. Okay?” Jake added. “Okay, let’s go talk to her.” Bob said in a defeated tone. The three men approached the singer and watched her finish a bottle of water. “Excuse me ma’am can I get the lady a glass of whatever wine she prefers?” Jake asked the bartender. The bartender looked at Maya, and back at Jake and let out a little chuckle. “This gentleman wants to buy you a glass of wine.” The bartender repeated to Maya. Maya smirked before she responded. “No thanks, I’ll take my usual Lola.” Maya said turning her back to the three men. Lola poured a double neat of Eagle Rare into a glass for Maya. This choice of drink made even Jake blush. A woman who knows her liquor. Jake stepped to the other side of her to talk with her more. “You like whiskey, I like that in a woman. I’m lieutenant Jake Seresin.” Jake said, putting his hand out to shake Maya’s hand. “Well lieutenant, I’m Maya, and Eagle Rare is actually a bourbon and I dont just like it, I love it. Best drink to have after a show.” Bradley let out a cough causing both Jake and Maya to whip their heads in his direction. “How rude of me, this is lieutenant Bradley Bradshaw and lieutenant Robert Floyd.” Jake said as Maya waved to the two other men. “Nice to meet you.” At that moment Maya felt her phone buzz in her pocket. It was a text from her friend that she is ready to meet for dinner. “Looks like that’s my cue. Thanks for coming and seeing the show, hope you boys have fun in Vegas.” Maya said as she threw back her drink. “See you later Lola.” “Wait can I get your number?” Jake asked, blocking her path from the door. “Maybe some other time Ken doll.” Maya side-stepped Jake and left through the front door. Bob and Bradley erupted in laughter. “Oh man, that was almost worth coming over here. So glad you owe me.” Bob said in between his laughs. “Shut up. Who knows maybe we’ll run into each other this week.” Jake said with a hint of hope. “Hey, I just got a text from the others they are at the hotel and want to meet up on the strip.” Bradley said. Silencing anymore laughter him or Bob had left. The three men left the House of Blues and headed back to the hotel.
Maya walked into Bubbas Gump’s Shrimp Co. looking for her friend. The hostess asked if she was looking for someone. Before Maya could respond a pair of hands were spinning her around and embracing her tightly. “Oh Ashes, I can’t believe it’s been three years!” a familiar voice squealed in Maya’s ear. When the girl pulled away, Maya saw her best friend. “Natasha! I can’t believe you’re here.” Maya responded. When the reunion of friends ended the two women were shown to a table on the upper patio. “So, how has Vegas been since the last time I saw you?” Phoenix asked. “It’s been good, still working off a couple of debts but I’m so close to being a free woman.” Maya said looking over the strip. “How has the navy been?” Maya asked, turning her full attention to her friend. “It’s been good to me, I got called back to Top Gun. A special priority mission, the best of the best.” Phoenix said puffing her chest and flexing her biceps. “You’ll never guess who else they called back.” Phoenix started. “Fucking Rooster.” Phoenix finished. “For as much as you talk about him, you either want to be with him or you truly hate him, so, which is it?” Maya asked her friend. Before Phoenix got a chance to answer a waiter came by to take their drink order. “Okay, so what have you got planned for this week?” Phoenix asked curiously about her friend’s plans. “Well first and foremost we’ll have VIP bottle service everywhere we go. But I have a couple nights planned on the strip to keep your buddies happy, then a few dinners, a day at the Bellagio cypress pool bar. I made an appointment for us with a special someone for tattoos and we have the Florida Georgia Line Concert tomorrow night.” Maya finished. “I can’t believe you are opening for them; how did you land that gig?” Natasha asked. Maya looked at her friend and looked out over the strip once more. “Oh, you know me Nix, I have my ways. Besides, the owner couldn’t find someone who was willing to be paid so little. I figured I could just have him put it towards what I owe.” Maya responded as the waiter came back over with their drinks. “What can I get ya’ll started with?” The waiter asked. The two women ordered a few appetizers and a couple cocktails. “What do you plan on doing after you have paid your debt?” Natasha asked, trying to meet her friend’s gaze. Maya looked down trying to search her head for an answer. She already knew what she was going to do. She was going to get the hell out of Las Vegas and never look back. But she didn’t want to let her friend in on the last surprise of her birth week. “Ashes, you know you are always welcomed at my house and I’m sure your aunt would love to see you.” Natasha added when her friend didn’t respond. “HA! The only time she calls is when she wants to update her friends on her pathetic niece.” Maya responded sharply. “Hey! You are not pathetic! You would be pathetic if you stayed with Elijah and kept doing drugs. But you chose to get better, and you chose to make a better life for yourself. The first call I got from you when you got here sounded like you were in your favorite book. Living like Hunter S. Thompson, I was truly worried. But you got help and you are paying back your debt. I couldn’t be prouder. I’m sure your aunt is just worried.” Natasha finished. “Yeah, well you don’t know her like I do, and you definitely don’t want to hear our conversations. But I digress. I might bounce around New York or go visit some friends in Tucson. I’m not sure yet.” Maya said with a smirk, knowing she would be hounded until she gave her friend a real answer. The food and drinks came, and the two women sat reminiscing about their friendship and catching each other up on their current situations.
“So, my place is a little ways outside of town but it’s huge. It’s on loan from a friend of mine who won’t be back until winter. She is this really cool old lady. I wish you could meet her. She would love all the soldiers staying in her house.” Maya said as the two women waited for the bill. When the waiter put the little black checkbook on the table Natasha reached for it. “Um what do you think you are doing?” Maya asked. Snatching the book from her friends grasp. “I want to pay, plus I can get a discount.” Natasha responded. “No let me get this, okay?” Maya asked but was more or less telling her friend she had the bill. “Oh, I almost forgot to tell you there was this guy earlier. He tried to buy me a glass of wine and wanted my number.” Maya started. “Was he cute?” Natasha asked. “I mean yeah, he wasn’t horribly disfigured, but he was so cocky and kind of had this fuck boy vibe. The type for hooking up and not anything serious. But him and his buddies looked like they were here for a bachelor party, not the type to come to Vegas to gamble and see the sights.” Maya responded. “Did you give him your number?” Natasha inquired. “Yeah right. No, I told him some other time, then I called him Ken doll!” Maya said laughing. “Poor guy, had no clue he was finished before he even started.” Natasha said. The two women left the restaurant, stepping out into the cool Nevada air. “Text your buddies to meet us at On The Record, by the time they get there they we'll be able to start the birth week.” Maya said, leading Phoenix to her car. After a quick trip to the parking garage behind the nightclub the two women’s spirits were high and ready to party.

I LOVE these choices. I figured none of them would be ‘GO NAVY!’ and choose one of those Navy/camo prints.
I cannot believe I didn’t think of Hawaiian print for Rooster. Like it’s so obvious but my brain went BLANK.
I love Bob’s. For some reason I was thinking space/constellations for him. I read a fic where he was a space nerd (with a passion for astronomy) and I loved it to the point where it stuck with me.
Now since I’m a visual person I want to find examples of possible prints so bad 😂
I apologize if I start spamming you with shit. Honestly you are the only person I feel can share Top Gun shit with 😂
But the dagger squad making those couple tie blankets with their SO! (This one is a single blanket but I’ve been some where they do two blankets for each of them) Like what a cute fucking thing. I can totally see Jake picking out a Longhorns fabric.
I’m curious what you think of this? In your opinion what patterns/fabric do you think the others would choose for their side of the blanket?
never apologise my love! you’re always welcome to discuss top gun with me! 🥰
oh and i love this idea so much! especially if it doubled up and you had your fabric one side, and theirs the other! okay so…
jake. longhorns, yes!
bradley. a hawaiian print.
bob. a print with little model aeroplanes.
mickey. a pop culture print, star trek/wars, zelda etc.
natasha. an illustrated cats print.
rueben. this is oddly specific, but i know him, a print of little teddy bears.
javy. a print with vintage cars and motorbikes.
let me know what you think my love! thank you so much for this totally sweet idea! 💌

CH☆R'S REQUEST 💌
robert 'bob' floyd x gn!reader
reader has been avoiding bob + overworking themselves, bob being the wonderful boyfriend material, he asks reader but it doesn't seem to work no matter how hard he tried ( etc, talking / trying to comfort them ,, asking them whats wrong ) , he then asks Phoenix for help on ways to help you ... ( idk what else u continue , )
OVERACHIEVER
platonic! bob x aviator! gn reader ; fluff / angst
summary — r has been overworking themself for the upcoming mission, avoiding bob in the process — that is, until an accident happens in the air
content / cws — mentions of overworking, blacking out, and a jet crash
a/n — i feel very meh abt this oneshot, and i'm not sure if this is exactly what you wanted, but it was all i could think of so hopefully you like it <3
you were an overachiever, you knew that. hell, it was your call sign for a reason. it wasn't that you were trying to be better than others, no, simply that you were scared to disappoint, so you made sure you went above and beyond to manage expectations.
this mission scared you, it scared the other pilots too. flying at a level was way past the hard deck, being on the verge of blacking out, pushing your jet to the breaking point — it was a lot, but, being in the 'best of the best' tier in the navy, you had no choice but to train excessively. okay, maybe not excessively, that was a you thing.
in the process of overworking yourself, you ended up pushing away everyone close to you, leaving you to be by yourself so you could focus on training. you were good friends with bob, but you also didn't know him for that long, so he had only seen this happen once before. he had absolutely no idea how to help you. he tried to ask phoenix for advice, but she had just told him to talk to you about it, and that was the thing, he didn't know how to. he had come up with the general things he wanted to bring up, but maybe it was way too late for that.
you remembered the events all too well, how you could not? it was just a few hours ago. you pushed yourself too hard for the exercise, you had gotten the closest to hitting the target than anyone else, but ended up blacking out in the process of going up the simulated mountain that lead to coffin corner. maverick managed to wake you up with the loud alarm that came along when an enemy locked onto your jet, but by the time you regained consciousness it was too late to save your jet, leaving you to eject at the very last second possible.
now you sat in a hospital bed, head resting against the back of it with your eyes shut and nails digging into the arm rests of it. you were sure that no one could be more disappointed in you than yourself right now.
"hey, uh— earth to [n]?" you were pulled out of your thoughts, opening your eyes to be met with bob standing at the side of your hospital bed, "hi, bob."
sitting down in the chair beside your hospital bed, bob's facial expression contorted into puzzled look, as if he was trying to make sense of something.
"i need to talk to you about something," he began rambling on and on about how unhealthy your overworking habits were, "you can come to me, y'know."
"i know." looking down at your lap, you felt tears well up in your eyes, bob was nothing but a sweetheart to you, and you pushed him away. he noticed and immediately pulled you into a hug, well, the best he could manage with you being in a hospital bed.
"i have to go back out with phoenix, so i'll see you later, okay?"
"okay." you smiled, watching as he jogged out the room to phoenix, who was waiting outside with her eyebrow raised. she patted him on the back and gave you a quick wave before dragging him away.

Chapter 2 | Masterlist
Things took a turn, good or bad I'm still not quite sure. A gala was being held in D.C., and I was required to be there as well as my father. Of course, I had to bring Aaron, much to my dismay. I had on a black strapless A-line dress, it couldn't be hemmed so I had to wear heels for once, making me a little taller than Aaron. "Remember we are here for me, so please, don't embarrass me Aaron." I said as we got out of the car to walk in, the cool spring Maryland air making me shiver slightly. "God, I'm not going to embarrass you. You're good at that yourself." I yanked his arm into mine, smiling widely. "Behave." I said lowly and he scoffed as we walked in, I looked around, finding my parents were not here yet.
Suddenly I spotted two old friends of my fathers. "Captain Mitchell, Admiral Kazansky." I said and they smiled as we walked over. I held out my hand for them to shake but Admiral Kazansky pushed it away. "We've known you since you were little Caila, no need for formalities tonight." Admiral Kazansky said kissing my cheek before Captain Mitchell pulled me into a hug. "And please, it's Ice and Maverick." I nodded. "So, what call sign did they give you?" Mav asked as he took a sip of his whiskey. "Magnolia." He nodded. "Very fitting." Ice nodded. "As your grandmother always said, pretty as a Magnolia in bloom." I smiled at him.
"Oh and this is my husband, Aaron Wilder." Aaron shook their hands, "Pleasure." He said in distaste and I wanted the ground to swallow me whole. "So Mr. Wilder, what do you do?" He smirked. "Well Ice, I-" "That's Admiral Kazansky to you son." I had to bite my lip to keep from laughing. "Admiral. I practice criminal law." Ice raised his eyebrows and nodded. "And uh, who is it you work for?" I still had Aaron's arm as he immediately went into work mode, going on and on about his firm. I couldn't stand it, I can't stand to here anymore about his job. I had zoned out as people walked by and he just kept going on, I would rather crash my jet into a mountain side or burn in than listen to it anymore.
That thought sent me reeling, I would rather be dead than listen to my own husband talk about his career. I glanced around and spotted a table full of alcohol, I turned back to find Mav and Ice both looking annoyed. "If you'll excuse me, I'm going to get a drink." I turned and Aaron pulled me back. "Get me a whiskey." It wasn't a question and I saw Maverick and Ice's eyes on me. I just turned and headed for the table, smirking as I saw someone very familiar approach the table. I walked over and grabbed a glass of champagne and slowly stood next to him. "Howdy stranger." I said as I took a sip of the bubbly drink. His head whipped around to me, fast enough to give him whiplash and he smiled widely. "Oh my god." He stared at me for a moment before pulling me into a tight hug. "Oh my god!"
The joy I felt in Rooster's arms was something I hadn't felt since he left the restaurant, the same day I got married. "Oh my god, I missed you." I said into his neck as he squeezed me. He set me down and took my hand as I took a step back. "Damn, I just- I have no words. Words can't describe how beautiful you look." A blush crept into my cheeks at his words. "Thank you, and look at you in your dress whites. Looks like life has been treating you well." He flashed me a small smile, "Something is different about you." I pursed my lips. "So, how was Top gun?" I asked and he stared down at me for a moment, he knew I was trying to change the conversation. "It was awesome, I graduated first in class." I smiled at him. "I knew you would, you're an amazing pilot." He smiled at me.
"So tell me, what have you been up to?" I shrugged. "A few shore duties. I did a special detachment in Guantanamo bay, then I was stationed in Greece for a few months. But I think my favorite was San Diego, I wasn't far from the beach and Phoenix wasn't far when she went to Top gun so I got to see her." He stared at me. "And your husband was all the way across the country, so you had freedom." I sighed. "Bradley, I'm so sorry about what he said to you the day you left. I was so angry when he told me-" "Caila, you don't have to apologize for him. You did nothing wrong." I sighed. "I just, I can't stand the way he acts sometimes." I said rubbing my hands down my face, until he grabbed my wrists. "Stop stressing about him, he seems to be busy anyway." I looked over and he was still talking to Maverick and Ice, who looked like they wanted to run the other way.
"I knew I should've left him at home." I said and Bradley chuckled before resting his hand on the small of my back. "I agree, I don't see how he's not glued to your side. If you were mine I don't think I'd be able to look away." I looked up to him, his face was so close all I had to do was lean up and I could kiss him. "There's my little girl!" I turned to see my father in his dress whites. "Hi daddy!" I rushed over as he pulled me into a hug. "You look beautiful, sweetheart." I smiled as he kissed my forehead. "Where's-" I was about to ask where mom was but she walked over, her red mermaid style dress making her blue eyes stand out. "Hi momma!" She squeezed me and kissed my cheek. "Sorry I got stopped by Sarah and you know how that goes, we can't shut up when we're together." I chuckled as Jameson came over. "Ugh, god you brought him!" I joked and my father glared at me. "Be nice to your brother." I caught sight of Bradley behind us, smiling at the interaction.
"Oh!" I rushed over, smiling widely. "Momma, daddy. This is Bradley, callsign Rooster." I said introducing him. He quickly saluted my father. "Admiral Motley." He addressed and my dad nodded, "At ease, Lieutenant." My dad took his hand and shook it. "How do you know my daughter?" I could've rolled my eyes, he was acting like he was my boyfriend to interrogate. "I met Lieutenant Motley when we were deployed together two years ago." My dad quirked a brow. "Motley? Last I checked her last name was Wilder." Bradley's eyes widened. "Oh uh, it's just I met her when her last name was Motley and I-" My dad busted out laughing. "It's alright son, if I had it my way it'd still be her last name!" My dad smacked him on the back. I grabbed my dad's arm, "Daddy." I said sternly and he sighed.
He looked to Rooster for a moment, staring at him. "You look so familiar, what's your last name Lieutenant?" I looked between them. "Bradshaw, sir." My dad stared at him for a moment before his eyes widened. "My god, are you Nick Bradshaw's son? Goose?" I furrowed my brows. "Sure am, sir. You knew him?" My dad nodded. "Knew him? He was my RIO before he was Mavericks! You're dad saved my life and then him and Carol snuck me into a concert and that's where I met my wife!" I smiled and looked up to Rooster who had a glint in his eye, not just tears but something else. "Wait, what?" Mom rushed over. "Gina, this is Nick and Carol's son, Bradley." My mom's jaw dropped. "Oh my god! I remember when Carol was pregnant with you, she told your dad at my show!" Our eyes widened with shock. "What?" Mom nodded. "I will pull down all my boxes when we go home, and I'll find that picture of your parents showing me the test. Oh, they were so excited!" A tear slipped down Bradley's cheek and my heart broke.
"Okay, maybe give him a second. Y'all just unloaded a lot of information on him." My parents nodded. "Of course, I'm going to find that husband of yours. We need to have a talk." I looked to where he was, standing with Ice and Maverick. My dad glared at him before marching over. "You want some air?" He nodded. "Come on." I turned him and looped my arm through his, walking him outside. "That was... a lot." He nodded as we stepped out onto the balcony. "I'm sorry, my parents are excitable people." He shook his head. "Don't apologize. It was nice to hear someone talk about my parents so animatedly. It's always, I'm sorry's. It was nice, just not what I was expecting for the night." I chuckled.
"Caila!" I turned to find my brother rushing over. "Hey, J. What's up?" He had glasses in his hand. "Got you another glass, and I figured Lieutenant Bradshaw here deserved a fresh whiskey. Because it seems without his parents you and I, might not be here." Rooster laughed. "I guess they are. Say isn't that, Aaron?" I looked inside and saw Aaron storming away from my dad, Maverick and Iceman. He turned until he spotted Rooster, Jameson and I and I could see in his eyes how angry he was. "Oh god." I muttered as he finally stepped outside and walked over. "Jason." Jameson glared at him, one fist clenched at his side and the other so tight on the lowball glass I feared it would shatter. "Hen." He said looking at Rooster. I could've punched him. "I need to talk to you." He said taking my arm tightly, pulling me away so fast I stumbled in my heels. "HEY!" I heard two voices yell as I caught myself and I turned, placing a hand on each of their chests.
"Don't. Please." I pleaded, I looked up at Jameson and he was searching my eyes. He knew it never helped to get in the middle of our arguments. I looked up to Rooster and saw him staring at Aaron. "Rooster, please." It took another minute before he took a step back. I turned back to Aaron and pulled him down to the far end of the balcony. "What in god's name has you so mad you decided to man handle me?" He crossed his arms over his chest. "Man handle, I don't think I did enough. You're all over him, holding his arm, walking around with him like he's your husband and not me." I had my dress clenched in my hands. "You are my husband, your ring is on my hand." I said holding up my left hand. "It's not my fault you get insecure about yourself and this marriage. You don't see me running around worried your cheating on me, or me trying to keep you away from any other female." He scoffed, "I'm not worried about you cheating on me, no other man would want you."
That stung, it shouldn't have but it did. "We are here for me, for the navy. You, are my husband and if you can't stand here and support me, and other officers here, then you can go home. If you do, your shit better be out before I get home. Because when I do I won't be alone, and I will let Jameson get his hands on you and I will make sure you can't do anything about him." We stared at each other for a moment before I stood to my full height, just a little taller than him and spun on my heel. Swiftly walking back towards Jameson and Rooster, I smiled as I saw phoenix standing there in a silver sheath dress. I rushed over and pulled her into a hug, a few tears hitting her shoulder. "Shh, it's okay." One hand went around my back and the other around my shoulders. I pulled back to see Aaron was gone and I sighed, cleaning my cheeks. "Please tell me I don't look like a racoon." Phoenix chuckled and swiped her thumbs under my eyes. "No, you still look just as beautiful as a Magnolia in bloom." I chuckled and shoved her shoulder.
"Even if you did look like a racoon, still the prettiest racoon I ever saw." I chuckled and missed the look my brother shared between Bradley and I. "Okay let's get back in here and sit because I'm starved." I took Jameson's arm as Phoenix took Rooster's, we walked in and I could've died at the sight before me. There was my husband who seemed to be having the time of his life, talking to Hangman. "Kill me now." I muttered as Jameson and I walked towards our parents, Rooster and Phoenix continuing on. "Rooster." My dad said catching his attention, he turned and walked over with Phoenix still on his arm. "Sir?" My dad shook his head. "Where are you sitting?" Rooster looked around and pointed to the table over by Hangman and my husband. "Over there, sir."
"Not anymore, you're sitting with us. Come." My dad waved and he dropped Natasha's arm. "I hope there are no hard feelings Lieutenant Trace." My dad said with a smirk. "Never Admiral." It took a long time for Natasha to warm up to my dad. Outside of his uniform he is a joking man, a huge prankster. He tried to joke with Natasha a little at first and she was terrified to say anything, she only realized she could joke back and relax when my dad threatened to ground her, jokingly, unless she finally laughed at one of his jokes. "Oh leave Nat alone! How are you, honey?" Mom asked hugging her and kissing her cheek. "Wonderful Gina, how are you?"
"Sir if you don't mind, I'll walk Lieutenant Trace back to her table-" Rooster started but I cut in. "Don't bother, I'll go. I have to retrieve my husband anyway." I said. Nat and I walked over to the table Hangman was at. "Magnolia, my don't you look lovely." I raised an eyebrow. "Hangman, I see you've met my husband, Aaron." Hangman looked between us, "This, this is your husband?" He asked and I nodded. "Wow, you two make an interesting pair." He walked closer. "When you want a real man, you know how to get in touch with me." I wanted so badly to laugh, but I didn't. "Babe, it's time to eat. Come on." I said, holding my hand out to take. He glared before taking it and standing, I smiled at him before he tossed my hand to the side and stormed away. "Want me to kick his ass?" Phoenix said. "Can I help?" We both whipped around to look at him. "What? I have eyes. He's a piece of shit. I don't like him." I sighed. "If Hangman doesn't like him that says something." I said walking by when Hangman grabbed my arm. "I give you a hard time but I don't hate you. Even you don't deserve the way he treats you." I smiled at him. "Thank you Hangman."
"My offer still stands though, call me when you get rid of him." I couldn't help but giggle at his words. "Same old Hangman." I said walking back to my seat, which was between Bradley and my husband. As I approached Bradley stood, pulling my chair out, scooting it in as I sat in it. "Thank you, Lieutenant." I looked to him and saw his jaw tick, he had it clenched and I could see him oh so carefully adjusting himself in his pants. 'Oh!' I thought, I turned him on. I was quite proud of that knowing it was me who got him riled up. "You okay?" He asked, clearing his throat. "Yeah, my husband is just off somewhere havin' himself a hissy fit like a toddler." I said and Bradley chuckled. I was proud of that too, making him laugh.
~~~
After we ate and listened to a few speeches, they opened up the floor for dancing. Phoenix stole Rooster for a few dances, and my parents were dancing as well. My brother even found a girl to dance with. That left Aaron and I at the table, him scrolling on his phone and me downing my third glass of champagne. Good thing we ate.
"Are you su-" "I done told you. I'm not dancing, not with you." I was about to snap a remark when Rooster came over. "What are you two sitting around for? Your mom is about to do a few songs." I glared at Aaron. "Someone here won't get up and dance with me." Aaron groaned. "Can you not dance?" Rooster asked and I shook my head. "He can, he just refuses." I said drinking more champagne. We sat in silence for most of Kitty Kallen's 'It's Been a Long, Long Time', until finally Rooster stood from his seat. "May I have this dance?" I looked to his hand to Aaron who was now staring at me.
"I'd love too." I said looking to Rooster. I took his hand and he walked me out to the dance floor, taking my right hand in his and my left went on his shoulder while his right went on my waist. "Thank you." I said and he chuckled. "What kind of man would I be if I just let a girl as beautiful as you sit and pout all night?" I smiled at him. "You're a good man, Rooster. I hope whatever woman you end up with realizes how amazing you are." The song ended and Rooster and I stopped. "I'd love to introduce Mrs. Regina Motley, who has graciously agreed to sing a few songs for us." Iceman announced as mom walked on stage. "Thank you, Tom." Mom said as they exchanged a hug. The music started and I looked to Rooster, he smirked at me and yanked me back into his chest.
"I'm not letting you get away from me that fast." There was something in his tone, it made my heart jump. "This is one of my most favorite songs mom has ever sung." He smiled down at me. "Oh, yeah?" I nodded. "Sing for me." I shook my head. "No, I just want to enjoy this." I said resting my head on his shoulder. Mom's voice singing 'I Hope You Dance'. I listened to her as I just took in everything, I never wanted to leave this position. It felt like we were in our own little bubble, like no one else was around. Mom was wrapping up the song when Rooster caught my attention. "Mags." I looked up, smiling at the nickname, he's the only one who calls me Mags.
"There's something I have to tell you, something that I've been sitting with since I dropped you off at home when we got back from deployment." His hand holding mine moved closer, the hand on my waist tightening so much it scrunched part of my dress. He brought the hand he was holding up tp his lips, placing a chaste kiss on my knuckles. Oh, how I wanted him to kiss me. "Promise me you will listen to me, until I am done. No interruptions." I nodded. "Of course."
Chapter 20
"Did you know?" I asked, walking up to my mom. She hung her head and I scoffed, "I didn't know, until after the mission. I noticed he was acting weird and when I asked he told me." I huffed. "But you knew, and you kept it from me." She nodded, her arms crossing over her chest. Her maroon dress bunching around her. "When he told me, I ripped into him. We didn't speak the entire way home, not on the plane, in the car. He slept in the guest room for two days, I was so mad." I don't know if she was trying to make me feel better, but it wasn't working.
"When we finally did talk, it was our biggest fight yet. We screamed, we yelled, hell I launched my chaco at him." I pursed my lips. "We have a big problem with throwing things when we're mad." She nodded. "I feel as mad as you. While I understand why he did it, you knew what you were getting into, very well, when you enlisted. He should not have grounded you, I know it and he does too. But before you were a Lieutenant, you were his little girl. Our youngest and frankly the one who gave me the hardest time during pregnancy. You scared us shitless a few times. You and your brother, are our entire world. When we almost lost you last year." She took a deep breath, trying to hold back tears.
"I knew it would break me, your my little girl, hell my best friend. But your father? I don't think he could've handled it. He didn't talk, didn't eat, didn't sleep. He was a shell of himself. I'm not saying what he did was right, because it's not. But he did it out of love." I licked my lips, tears streaming down my face. "I don't know if I can ever forgive him, mama." I said catching her eye. "Because by holding me back, Rooster and Maverick almost didn't come home. I know there's no guarantee I would've come home, but you two raised me to care about people. I would've happily burned in, if it meant that they got to come home." Mom leaned over, her hands resting on her knees, sobs wracking her body. I rested a hand on her back and after a moment she stood up.
"I am so proud of you, and I know it may take awhile to forgive your father, but just remember. He did it with your best interest at heart." I nodded and pulled her into a hug as she rubbed my back. "Caila?" I looked to see Jerry, slowly walking over. "I know this is a bad time and I know it's an emotional moment, but..." He trailed off. "But what?" He sighed. "Aaron just fired his lawyer." "WHAT?!" I grabbed mom, quietening her down. "So does that mean we're postponing the trial?" He shook his head. "He's representing himself." He shoulders fell, a shiver running up my spine.
"What is it? What's wrong?" Rooster asked, rushing over and placing his hand on my back. "Oh my god, he's pulling a Bundy." Rooster furrowed his brows. "What? Honey, you gotta tell me what's going on." "Aaron fired his lawyer, he's representing himself." Jerry nodded. "So what does that mean?" I rubbed my face, my hands going through my hair. "It means, that if he calls witnesses he will be questioning them. If he calls on her, he's asking the questions." Rooster shook his head. "No." I sighed, placing my hand on his arm. "Rooster." "No. I am not letting him fucking near you." I nodded. "I know. He is a really good lawyer, for others. He's a narcissist who thinks people should believe him, every word that comes out of his mouth. This... this is his down fall. So if he wants to try and get under my skin, then he can but everything that he has done will come out."
He shook his head, "After all the shit we've been through, you want to let him interrogate you like your the criminal?" I nodded. "If that's what it takes." He sighed. "You're a hell of a woman, you know that?" I nodded, grinning at him. "I've been told once or twice." He chuckled, his hand coming up to rest on my cheek. "God, I love you." I pulled him down into a kiss, my arms wrapping around his shoulders. His one hand stayed on my cheek while the other found my waist. "I'm gonna have to ask you two to not do that." I pulled away looking to find Aaron standing next to Jerry. He was glaring at us while Jerry looked down on him, his eyes narrowed almost snarling. Rooster grabbed my waist, pulling me impossibly close to him as he glared at Aaron.
"And all communication is to be through the lawyers, so you talk to me." Jerry said stepping in between us. "She is being sued for Alienation of Affection. It wouldn't look good to be seen with the man she cheated on me with." Jerry lips twitched, fighting a grin. "Noted. We'll see you in there." They stared at each other, challenging each other until Aaron nodded and walked away. "God, I want to kill him." Rooster muttered as he pressed his lips to my forehead. "I know." I placed my hand on his chest as Jerry faced us. "Ten minutes is almost up. Let's get back in there, he won't get the opportunity to take the stand until tomorrow." We nodded and followed him in. I was about to step through the gate when Rooster tugged me back into his chest, catching me off guard with a searing kiss. "I love you." He whispered, his forehead resting on mine. "I love you too."
I kissed him one more time before taking my seat next to Jerry. "I need a root canal after seeing you two." I chuckled. "Natasha said the same thing." Judge Durham came back in and sat down. "Okay we will proceed with the plaintiff, Mr. Polinski." Jerry stood again, "Miss Motley, would you join me?" I nodded, walking over to the stand. The bailiff came over standing in front of me. "Please raise your right hand." I did. "Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?" I nodded. "I do." "You may proceed." Jerry nodded, tucking his hands in his pockets and giving me a kind smile. "We were discussing the domestic violence within the Wilder home. Now Miss Motley, you were called to attend the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program, better known as Top Gun, correct?" I nodded. "You were in the middle of a deployment in Corpus Christi four years ago when you were given the letter, correct?"
"That is correct." He nodded. "You were given a weeks leave before you had to be there?" I nodded. "Yes." "And how did you use this leave?" I took a deep breath. "I went to go see my friend Natasha at her home in San Francisco." I caught her eye and she gave me a small smile. "Why did you not go home?" I grabbed the hem on my dress, trying not to shake. "I didn't want to go home. Things had gotten bad, I wasn't allowed to sleep in the bedroom, I was not allowed to speak unless spoken to." He sighed, nodding to me. "And what would happen if you went against any of those so called 'rules'?" The tears sprung to my eyes at the thought. "Aaron would yell, he would throw things. He would hit me."
"Any examples?" I nodded. "He threw a lowball glass one time, it shattered on my shoulder and I spent two weeks picking out the glass." He nodded, a sad look in his eyes. "And why did he throw the glass?" I could feel Aaron's eyes on me, boring into the side of my head. "He wanted me to sleep with him and I said no." There were some quiet gasps and murmurs, a tear slipped and I quickly wiped it away. "What did he do after he threw the glass?" I shook my head, Jerry knew and I didn't want to say it. Not out loud. He came close, whispering. "I know it's hard, but he can't hurt you. This will help us get him." I nodded, taking a deep breath. "He uh-he came over, grabbed me by the back of my neck. He dragged me over to the back of the couch, forced me over it. He ripped a hole in my leggings and..." I stopped, struggling to find the words. I caught Rooster's eye. His eyes were glassy but he nodded, mouthing an 'I Love You'.
"He forced himself on me." I rushed out, tears covering my cheeks. "Objection." Aaron said, standing. "Explain." Judge Durham did not look happy, one bit. "You can't sexually assault the person your married too." My jaw dropped, as did everyone else's. "Overruled." He said and Aaron's face turned red. "Are you sure you don't want to hire other council, Mr. Wilder?" He huffed. "I have this handled." The Judge gave me a look that said, 'What were you thinking marrying him?' "Moving on, so you went to stay with Lieutenant Trace before you went to Top Gun. How did you spend that time? How did you get to Top Gun after?" I pursed my lips, keeping the tears at bay. "I called my mother and she had my car shipped to San Francisco and she flew out with some of my stuff." He nodded, motioning me to keep going.
"Natasha, my mother Regina and I all went out. We went to a few clubs, a few bars. Um, the next day was just a relaxing day there were a few conversations that ended in tears." He nodded. "And what were those conversations about?" "Rooster-Bradley. At the gala, I told him to stay away from me, leave me alone and Natasha told me later it... hurt him, a lot. I never actually wanted to hurt him, I just wanted to keep him away. It had made Aaron so mad and I just... I didn't want him mad, I couldn't have him mad at me." I inhaled deeply, trying to soothe myself.
"While Natasha and I were talking about him, he facetimed her." Jerry perked up, "And what did he say?" "He asked me the usual questions about how I was doing. Then he um, he told me how beautiful I was." My face heated up at the confession. "What next?" A smile crept up on my face at the memory. "He told me, if I wanted, all I had to do was ask and he would drop everything and fly out to meet me." I bit my lip at the memory. "And what did you say?" "That I couldn't ask him to do that. He told me again and I considered it." He nodded. "And did you eventually give in?" I nodded. "All I said was please and he packed a bag and caught a red eye to San Francisco."
I heard a few awes in the crowd, making me blush. I looked to Rooster and he was rubbing the back of his neck, which had a pink tint. "What happened when he arrived?" I bit my lip. "Natasha and I met him at the airport before going out to dinner. We had a few drinks, got back to Natasha's. Bradley felt the scar on the back of my shoulder from the lowball." "And how did he react?" I bit my lip. "He was angry, he wanted to catch a flight to Atlanta." Jerry nodded as he paced in front of me. "Why?"
"He wanted to hurt Aaron." He nodded and I glanced to Aaron, he was seething. "Why didn't he go?" I thought back on it. He easily could've pushed past me and went out the door, but he didn't. "I blocked the door, and I told him I was filing for divorce." Jerry threw his hands out. "And why did that divorce not go through?" "Aaron knew the lawyer. The lawyer called him and told him, and he blocked it." I wanted to crawl out of my skin, the looks of pity were too much. I could handle them before, but now, it was like I was under fire. "So, you spent the weekend with Mr. Bradshaw and Miss Trace, with the promise of meeting Mr. Bradshaw at Norfolk international after you graduated from Top Gun?" I nodded. "But those plans changed when Aaron showed up and attacked you." I nodded again.
"He tossed me into the wall, held me in a chokehold, and threatened me. He broke my phone, giving me one that he kept when we were together, he monitored it, making sure I didn't add any numbers that he didn't recognize. That's also where he told me he was having Bradley followed." Jerry nodded. "You may step down." I got up, walking back to the table, finding Rooster's eyes on the way. Whether he knew it or not, his presence helped tremendously. The little nods of encouragement, the small words of affirmation, those were things that made this easy. Not my parents, not the team, not the knowing that if we win this Aaron will spend a long time in prison.
Him. Him supporting me, loving me, protecting me. That was what made this easier. "Miss Motley wanted out of her marriage, long before she started seeing Mr. Bradshaw. Her husband cheated on her repeatedly over the course of multiple deployments and still blocked her request for a divorce. She was forced to live in a loveless marriage, in a home that she couldn't even speak in. Now, let's take our focus off of Bradley and bring our focus back to Aaron. I'd like to call to the stand my next witness, Lieutenant Jake Seresin." I immediately knew where this was going, I wanted to sink back in my chair.
Jake walked over, being sworn in before crossing his ankle over his knee and leaning back, a smirk on his face. "Mr. Seresin, when was the first time you officially met Mr. Wilder?" Don't get cocky Jake, don't. "At the gala, the same one that he made Caila leave with him from." Jerry nodded. "What was the topic of conversation?" Jake's face shifted, a hard look settling on his chiseled features. "Originally it was how embarrassing he thought Caila was. I told him we don't talk about ladies like that where I'm from. So, he very unhappily changed the conversation to his job." Jerry nodded. "What were some things he said about Miss Motley?"
"He was going on about how it was un-lady like for her to walk with another man, her father invited Bradley to sit with them for the dinner, and he was going on about how he was going to make sure she stayed away from him." Jerry stopped pacing, turning to Jake. "Did he give details on how he would do that?" Jake shook his head with a frown. "Let's move on, the second time you met Mr. Wilder was actually at Miss Motley's Top Gun graduation?" He nodded. "He interrupted our conversation, he placed his hand on her shoulder and she froze. I could see the fear wash over her, her face turned white, she started sweating. I knew then that something wasn't right so I steered the conversation towards me." Jerry nodded. "And what did he say?"
"He mentioned how proud he was, but that she would be ending her career soon. He didn't like her being gone so much, he said he 'had to keep her home.'" Tears welled in my eyes at the thought of staying home with him all the time, I couldn't do it, I knew that. "So the next time you saw him, that was New Years Eve two years ago?" Jake took a deep breath, nodding. "What happened at this party?"
"My oldest sister Kim and her husband throw a New Years Eve party every year. This was the first one after Laura, my other sister married Caila's brother Jameson, so she invited his family. Their parents came, as well as Caila and Aaron. I greeted Caila at the door with a hug, the same way I did her mother and Laura. I saw the look on Aaron's face and he wasn't happy but as soon as Caila pulled away he had a smile on his face. All throughout the night we were just drinking and having a good time. But I noticed he had kept her close all night, which wouldn't be odd but the grip he had. I noticed fresh bruises after an hour." I took a chance and glanced at Aaron, he was rubbing his face, angry.
"At about one a.m. she got up and went to the kitchen, she was fairly sober but Aaron was drunk, he followed her. I gave it a minute and peeked in on them, just to check. I looked around the corner and saw he had her pinned to the island by her throat, a knife pointed between her eyes." I held my breath, no one but those that were there knew about that. "She was... begging him to let her go. Come to find out it was because she hugged me and spoke to me." I knew Hangman felt bad about it, he still sort of felt like it was his fault and no matter how many times I told him otherwise, he never truly believed me.
"I stepped in and he let her go and dropped the knife. By the time everyone else stepped in they were yelling at each other. She took a step back towards me and he threw the glass he had, it broke and part of it hit her on the side of her head." I subconsciously touched my head, feeling the small bump that caused so much blood to fall down the side of my face. "All hell kinda broke loose at that point, everyone was swinging, pushing them apart. Laura held Caila off to the side while her dad and Jameson threw him out." I closed my eyes, hoping to push down the emotions that flooded me.
Chapter 3
"So what happened last night?" I looked down at Phoenix's phone, flat, facing the ceiling. Rooster had a smile on his face, his eyes gleaming with this innocence that made him look like a child interested in a toy on a shelf. "Um," I picked up the phone, leaning against her couch as I continued to sit in the floor. "We went out last night, Phoenix, mom and I." His eyebrows shot up. "Your mom?" I nodded. "Yeah it was... the most fun I've had in awhile." I said giving him a small smile. "So who had to be carried home? I know at least between you and Phoenix one of you did." He said chuckling, making me laugh. "My mom." His eyes widened and his jaw dropped.
"Your mom? Regina Motley, being carried home?" I nodded. "It took two extra hours to get here because Phoenix and I were plastered ourselves." He laughed. "That's hilarious and not safe. I'm glad your okay." I smiled at him. "So uh, how've you been?" I bit my lip. "Better." He nodded. "How's uh..." I pursed my lips. "Don't ask questions you don't want to ask Bradley." He nodded, I looked out the window for a minute before looking back at the phone to see Bradley staring at me. "What?" He chuckled, shaking his head. "You just-even after you crying you're still just so-" "Don't. Please don't tell me how beautiful I am." "And why not?" I sighed, wiping a few tears that slipped. "Because, it makes me want you." His tongue darted out to wet his lips as I sat curled against Phoenix's couch. "You tell me, that you want me to come out there, and I will drop everything and catch the next flight to San Francisco."
I shook my head. "I can't ask you to do that." He was staring at me, his eyes unreadable. "Then don't ask. Just say please, and I will be on my way." I stared at him, and he held my gaze. "Just give me the first syllable." A tear fell from his eye, and I opened my mouth before closing it. I propped my fist on my chin, looking back out the window. This is my chance, I have my car, all my important belongings, my husband still thinks I am in Corpus Christi. "Caila." I looked back to the phone, seeing his eyes all glassy. "I have spent, the last year worrying about you, every damn day." More tears gather in my eyes. "Not knowing if you were okay has been the hardest thing to deal with in my day to day life. I don't want to keep living like this, I can't."
I inhaled deeply, so tired of crying. This is my chance, if I don't take it I know I will regret it. I looked back down to see Rooster wiping his eyes and I smiled at him. "Rooster." He looked at me intensely. "Please." He suddenly jumped up. "Stay on the phone." He was rummaging around and I saw a shirt fly over the phone and smiled. After about ten minutes he picked the phone up again, showing me his duffel bag. "I am leaving for the airport right now. I will text you all my flight information." I bit my lip and smiled at him. "Are we really doing this?" He nodded as he closed his front door behind him. "We sure are, you sit tight pretty girl. I'm coming for you." More tears fell at his words. "I'll see you when you land Rooster." He smiled at me. "I can't wait to see you." I smiled. "I can't wait to see you either." The call ended and that's when the panic set in.
What if Aaron found out, he could still end our careers. Is it really worth costing Rooster everything? Is my selfishness worth it? "Hey, hey, hey! You're going to cause the floor to fall in if you keep pacing like this." I turned to phoenix who grabbed my arm. "What's wrong?" It was time to come clean. "I said yes." Phoenix seemed confused. "Yes? Yes, to what?" I held up her phone. "Bradley." Her eyes widened. "Wait? You mean-" "I mean, I said 'go', and now he is on his way to the airport and is purchasing a ticket to fly to San Francisco to come see me." She placed her hands over her mouth in shock. "You did?" I nodded as she came over and pulled me into a hug. My chin resting easily on her shoulder as she was an inch taller than my five foot six frame.
"And I think I need to tell you why I walked away at the gala last year." We sat on the couch and she took my hand. "Aaron said if I left him, he would pin me for adultery." She pursed her lips. "Which is punishable by dishonorable discharge in the Navy." I nodded. "I would give up my career for Rooster, I'd lose everything for him." She nodded and squeezed my hand. "But Aaron threatened to pin him for it as well. Losing everything for him is worth it, but costing him everything? Being the reason he loses it all? I couldn't do that to him." She inhaled deeply.
"Yeah, but there's no way he can pin that. It's just an allegation." I shook my head. "Do you remember that bouquet of flowers he got me in Australia?" She nodded, how could anyone forget? "Yeah." "I dried them out and I have them in a box in my closet. Aaron found them and took pictures. He also took pictures of the gold studs in my ears, I never take them out except for the one time and he pulled out the box and everything. He has enough to pin us." Phoenix sighed and squeezed my hand. "I would rather him hate me and still be able to do the one thing he has worked so hard for, then love me and lose everything." She pulled my head down on her shoulder.
"Rooster would rather love you and have to work night shift at a gas station, than lose you and continue his career." I shook my head. "But I can't live with being the reason, 'Nix. I can't." I was backsliding. "Maybe I should tell him to stay home." She snatched her phone from me. "NO!" She yelled and I was shocked. "If you cancel on him, then you'll go back to Aaron. You will die, Caila. He is breaking you down and if you stay with him much longer, you won't survive." I teared up remembering my thoughts from the gala. "Over the past year, I've been having some... dark thoughts."
Phoenix gripped my hand tighter, and forced me to look at her. "Caila, you have to tell someone." I shook my head. "It's only when I'm at home, not when I'm gone or if he's gone. When we're apart it's like my life is bliss because he doesn't even care enough to call, but when we're together at home it's like." I choked up, "It's like there's no end to my misery. Like I'm going to be trapped forever, forced to live in a house where I can't speak unless spoken to, I can't sleep in my own bed." I slumped on the couch as Phoenix stared at me. "I'm so tired of the fighting, and the yelling, and the shoving, and breaking glasses." At his point I was sobbing once more. "I'm so tired of being scared in my own house, and if I don't get out Phoenix. I know I'm going to do something that I will regret if I fail." She stared at me before yanking me into a hug. "I'm here, in whatever you need Caila. But promise me, that as soon as possible you call a lawyer and get a divorce." I nodded as my phone buzzed with a text from an unsaved number.
Flight leaves in an hour. My red eye lands at SFO in five hours and thirty minutes. I'll see you so soon, pretty girl.
In almost seven hours, Rooster would be here. I showed Phoenix the text and she squealed in excitement.
I can't wait, I'm so excited to see you too.
~~~
Those seven hours dragged by but Phoenix and I made use of it by searching divorce lawyers back home. It took a lot of vetting to make sure no one would know my husband, because they would run their mouths. "Hi, my name is Caila Wilder. I was hoping to have some papers drawn up to divorce my husband." God, I sounded too happy to be doing this. "Okay, is there anyway you could come into the office? We can't legally draw up the papers over the phone." My heart sank. "Yes, it will have to be a few months though. I'm away for work for awhile."
I managed to schedule an appointment half an hour before we had to leave for the airport. "I have an appointment to file for divorce." I said shocked. "You're finally doing something for you." I smiled at her. "Now, let's go get you your man." She said snatching her keys and my hand, dragging me out to her car. We drove in silence but of course my nervous habits kicked in and I was pulling on my fingers. We arrived and we sat in the lounge, waiting. I couldn't sit for long though, I began pacing and Phoenix kept grabbing my dress to stop me.
"If you keep tuggin' on it, it's gonna stretch!" My southern accent was thicker when I was stressed or angry. "Caila, look." She pointed and I saw sandy colored curls peeking through the crowd. It took a minute but people started moving out of the way, and there he was. Light wash jeans, white tank top under a Hawaiian shirt. His aviator glasses hanging from his shirt and his dog tags bouncing off his chest. He had his duffel hanging over his shoulder, and a large smile plastered on his face.
I couldn't help but stare at him as he got closer, somehow Rooster became the embodiment of everything good I needed in my life right now. "I am so videoing this." I whipped around to Phoenix, "Do not post it! If-" "I'm not." She said grabbing my arm, giving it a gentle squeeze. "What's this?" I turned to see Rooster standing about twenty feet away. "I fly all the way out here and I don't have the prettiest girl in the state of California leaping into my arms?" I chuckled and stepped forward when he stopped me. "No, wait!" I stopped and he smirked. Turning around and walking away, it felt like an eternity before I could barely see his head in the crowd. "OKAY!" I laughed in embarrassment but took off anyway.
As soon as he was in view he dropped the duffel and opened his arms. I launched myself at him, making him stumble backwards. His arms wrapped around my waist and mine went around his neck. I breathed deeply, inhaling his cologne. "I have missed you somethin' fierce, for so long Rooster." He chuckled. "Oh, pretty girl. I have missed you for so much longer." He shifted me up so his arms were wrapped around my thighs, making me giggle. "Oh, music to my ears." I rested a hand on each cheek. "Hey, Rooster?" He smiled at me. "Yes?" I bit my lip. "I really, really wanna kiss you." His smile grew wide. "Then kiss me, honey." I smiled and leaned down, kissing him gently. His lips were much softer than I imagined, he smiled into the kiss before giving me a spin making me laugh.
Slowly he set me on my feet before leaning down and kissing me again. "You. Have. No. Idea. How. Long. I. Have. Waited. For. This." He said in between kisses. His arms wound tightly around my waist as I cradled his face. "I didn't know it until now, but I've been waiting too." Phoenix walked over with a huge smile on her face. "That was so sweet I think I need a root canal!" Rooster motioned her over and he pulled her into a tight hug.
As he pulled away his arm slipped around my waist, pulling me close again. "So how long are you here for?" He pursed his lips. "I have to be back on Monday." It was Friday evening, so we only get two days together. He looked down to me and smiled before running a hand through my hair. "We'll make the best of it though." I smiled at him as we left the airport, shoving Rooster in the back seat. "So, we hitting the bars tonight?" Phoenix and I both groaned at his words. "God no! We can go sit in a bar at a restaurant but no, no bars." Phoenix said making Rooster and I laugh. "Yeah, I can't handle another migraine."
~~~
We found restaurant that had a live band, and amazing food. I reached over to Phoenix's plate and stole a few fries, the look she gave me screamed murder. "What some of my shrimp?" She eyed me for a second before stealing some. "They're good." Rooster said while his hand rested on my knee, giving it a comfortable squeeze. I nodded and glanced up to him, he has a smile on his face as he sipped on his beer. "What?" He asked and I gave him a small smile. "I'm just glad you're here." He smiled and leaned down to kiss me. "Like I told you, just say the word." I chuckled as we went back to eating.
I noticed a few girls at the bar, they kept turning around and looking at us. I thought they were looking at Rooster for a minute but then I recognized them. "Shit, stage five clingers from last night. ten o'clock." I said and Phoenix looked up and caught their gaze. "What's wrong?" Rooster asked, moving his hand to the inside of my thigh, squeezing gently. "Those girls kept following us last night, huge fans of mom and she just kept talking to them and now they think we're friends or something." I said and looked over, seeing them get up, drinks in hand.
My #1 post of 2022
Girl Crush
Content Warning: Angst, cursing
This could be based off Little Big Town's 'Girl Crush', I only realized it after I wrote it.
Summary: Being friends with Rooster since childhood was amazing, the feelings that came with it were not.
Masterlist | Flashbacks
I stared down into the clear liquid filling my glass, the sinking feeling in my stomach growing. I knew he was behind me, across the bar with the blonde he’s been gushing about the last two weeks. He decided to introduce her to our friends, they’ll love her, I know it. She is sweet, she’s kind, she’s beautiful, and dammit what I wouldn’t give to be her. For years I have been there, every time he left for deployment, every time he came home, I moved in with him so he wouldn’t be alone after his mom passed. I’ve always been there, since we were kids. So why was I not enough for him?
Suddenly I felt a large but gentle hand on my lower back, and I went rigid. I had hoped he wouldn’t see me, but I guess maybe I didn’t blend in as well as I thought. “Hey, I thought you weren’t feeling good?” Don’t look up, dammit, don’t look at him. “Hey.” His knuckle bumped under my chin, telling me to look at him. I just kept my head down, if I looked at him I don’t know if I’d cry, run away, or kiss him. “Look at me, please.” This time he grabbed my chin, turning my face towards him. Immediately my vision shifted to his eyes, those brown eyes that looked like puddles of chocolate ice cream he loved to indulge himself in occasionally. “I thought you were sick? I was gonna bring you some nuggets when we left.”
This was one reason I loved him, no matter what he always made time for those he cared for. “I felt better, wanted a shot.” He pursed his lips, nodding his head. I knew what he was thinking. If I wanted a shot, I easily could’ve pulled down the bottle of ‘Grey Goose’ he bought me last year. Thankfully, he never mentioned it and I didn’t have to feel embarrassed. “Why don’t you come join us? Katy is having so much fun with everyone. Plus she adores you.” I shook my head. “Nah, I’m not up for a big hang out. Think I’ll just take my shot and go home.” He sighed, turning to Jenny, our bartender. “Two more, Jen?” She nodded, pulling out two bottles from the cooler. “Are you sure you’re okay?” I nodded. “Absolutely.” He sighed, taking the two beers.
“You’ll let me know when you get home?” I nodded, twisting my glass on the bar top. “Yeah.” He leaned down, kissing my head. “Be careful, okay?” I nodded, wishing he’d stay close for another minute just so I could smell his cologne a little longer. He gave me one last look before walking away. I swallowed the tears, tossing the vodka back, the burn stinging my throat. I turned to look behind me, regretting it immediately. She had both of her hands wrapped around his waist, beer in hand. One of his held her waist, the other had settled into the back pocket of her jeans. He said something that made her giggle, leaning down to kiss her lips.
At that I turned back to the bar, seeing the shot glass had been refilled. “You look like you could use one for the road.” I nodded, tossing it back as well. “He loves you, sweetie. He just hasn’t realized it yet.” I pursed my lips, giving her a small nod, not quite believing her. “Night, Jen.” I slid her the money for the shots before walking outside to my car. I took one last look up to the pool table where they were standing. They were turned, talking to our friends, his arm around her waist and her arm around his shoulder, playing with the hair on the nape of his neck.
Tears flooded my eyes, I couldn’t look at them anymore. I yanked my car door open, almost hitting the car next to me. I got in, slamming the door closed as the sobs wracked my body. I leaned my head back on the headrest, hoping to soothe myself with no such luck. What did she have that I didn’t? Why wasn’t I good enough for him? I slammed my hands on the steering wheel, my emotions overriding my conscious. When I could finally breathe I started the car, backing out of the parking spot and speeding back to my apartment. I hated myself for not saying anything sooner, I waited too long and he found someone else. If only I could tell him now, then maybe, just maybe, I’d have a chance. Little did I know, he just witnessed my breakdown in the bar parking lot.
Sneak Peak: Arms Wide Open Ch 2
Robert Floyd knew that the others had started to catch on to his pulling back. He hadn’t exactly been subtle about it, as soon as the carrier brought them back to land was when he stopped hanging out with the squad.
Bob was like smoke in the wind, hard to find.
He was sitting in his apartment’s living room, looking at the old photographs that he kept of Bird, silently kicking himself when the doorbell rang. Bob didn’t get up until the third time the visitor pressed the button, then he groaned and quickly stashed the photos in one of the books on his coffee table.
When he opened the door, he was surprised to see Mickey. It was a work night, and it was already 11:45. With furrowed brows, he gestured for the other male to come in and into the living room as he closed his front door.
Bob went to the kitchen as Mickey made himself at home, grabbing two beers and twisting the cap off before making his way back to the couch. He stood frozen in his step as he saw what Mickey had in his hand, an old photo of himself and his Birdie.
He could remember the exact day that the photograph was taken. A week after their first date, they were on the tarmac walking to their respective jets, when Bird jumped onto his back, ruffled his hair, and kissed his cheek obnoxiously.
Golden Hour || Ch. 9
[Bob Floyd x Bradley Bradshaw x OC]
A Bob Floyd & Bradley Bradshaw AU [Hart of Dixie inspired]
Synopsis: Willow, Georgia. Barely even a town, just a speck on a map that you tried to wipe off, mistaking it for a crumb. You’re the outsider: a fancy New York doctor, fresh out of a failed engagement, with zero primary care experience. You’re also the new town doctor, taking over for a recent retiree who was beloved. His son, Bob Floyd, is the other physician at the practice, and takes an immediate dislike to you. But you were looking for a fresh start, and Willow doesn’t seem all that bad if you can get past the fact that there's only one restaurant in town. It helps that you've caught the eye of Bradley Bradshaw, the town attorney, despite the fact that you vowed to take a break from dating. How long until you start to make friends in a town where social circles have been set in stone since elementary school? And what will it take to make Bob Floyd see you’re not as bad as he wants to believe you are?
Pairing: Bob Floyd x OC; Bradley Bradshaw x OC
Tropes: Love triangle, enemies to lovers
Warnings: Angst, cursing, alcohol
Chapter summary: Bob invites Olive to the office after hours to sort paperwork ... but maybe there's more intent behind the date after all
WC: 1.6K
Masterlist here; previous chapter here
In the morning, you woke up to a clattering sound in the living room. You sat up straight in bed, the strap of your silky nightgown slipping down your shoulder as you sucked in a tense breath.
And then the memories flooded back. Bob showing up at your door late at night drenched from the rain. His panic attack.
The fact that he was asleep on your couch at that very moment.
Before you could even think, you were scrambling out of bed, throwing open the double doors to the living room as Bob stood hunched over the couch, putting on his shoes. He looked up, hair mussed on one side, blue eyes wide. “Sorry,” he muttered. “I, uh, I was trying to be quiet.” His eyes roamed over your chest quickly, before zipping back up to your face.
You crossed your arms, suddenly aware of how thin your nightgown was. “It’s OK, I was awake.” A lie, of course, and he knew it too. But you were being nice.
“I’m sorry I stormed in here last night,” Bob said, straightening up and running one hand through his hair, combing out the knots. “I shouldn’t have done that.”
“I’m the town doctor. Kind of my job, right?”
He grinned, softly. “Guess you can add one more patient to your files.”
“You’re due for a physical.” It came out automatically and you gasped audibly, slapping one hand over your mouth. Where the fuck had that come from? There was so much dirty intent behind the words it shocked you.
Bob’s pink mouth rounded in an “O” before he let out a laugh. “That’s a first, Dr. James. Are you hitting on me?”
You removed your hand. “Well that would just be downright unprofessional, wouldn’t it?”
Bob shifted his weight from one leg to another. “What are you doing tonight?”
You frowned. “Tonight?”
“Is Bradshaw around? If the two of you have plans…”
“He’s out of town on a trial,” you added, cutting him off. “For another few days.”
“Come by the office, around seven,” Bob said, stepping toward the door. “I’ll bring wine.”
“For what?” you called out as he made his way to the front door and swung it open.
“It’s a surprise,” he replied before shutting the door behind him.
***
For the first time since you stepped foot in Willow, you were nervous. As you raised your hand to the door of the office, you stopped. What were you doing? It was your practice, too. You had a key.
Rolling your eyes to yourself, you slipped the key in the lock only to find it already unlocked. Gently, you eased open the door, the sound of your heel sending staccatos of echoes into the long hallway.
“Hello?”
“Back here.” Bob’s gravely voice came from the other end of the hallway but he was nowhere to be seen. You shut the door behind you and stepped inside.
“What are you doing?” you asked.
“Just come here.” There it was, that exasperated tone that he had so often used when you first met. A part of you grinned as he lapsed back into annoyance with you.
You peered over the edge of the front desk where Molly usually sat and frowned. Bob sat on the ground surrounded by files. “You asked me here to do paperwork?”
He held up a bottle of wine with one hand. “Yes, but we get to drink while we do it.”
“Gimme.” Your hands reached out for the bottle, fingers wagging, and Bob reached up, pressing it into your hand, your fingertips overlapping for a second before you pulled away.
Bob scooted back, giving you some room on the floor. He had on a pair of jeans and a flannel shirt, the sleeves rolled up toward his elbows, and he was wearing only a pair of thin socks instead of shoes. You tried to sit in your miniskirt and heels, but it was no use. You sighed, standing up and Bob frowned. “Where are you going?”
“Hold your horses,” you said, stomping off to your office. A minute later, you returned in a pair of baggy scrubs, feet bare. Bob’s eyes sparkled.
“Nice outfit change.”
You rolled your eyes, folding yourself onto the floor next to him. “Alright, what are we doing?”
“Molly, bless her heart, isn’t the best at administration work. So once a quarter, I come in and organize all the files.”
“She’s the secretary,” you said. “What do you mean she’s not good at administration work?”
He shrugged, moving a pile of papers to his left. “She just doesn’t do it how I like.”
“So she’s not bad at admin, she just doesn’t do it exactly how you like.”
“Correct.”
“That’s the problem with you, Floyd,” you said, leaning back against the wooden cabinet. “You want people to fit perfectly into the little boxes that you’ve set out. Sometimes you can’t categorize things exactly how you want them. Sometimes people just are what they are.”
“I’m particular.”
“You’re annoying.” It slipped out before you could stop it.
Bob looked up. And to your surprise, there was mirth in his eyes. He gave you a tilted grin. “And you think you’re perfect, Olive?”
“Not perfect,” you replied. “But I’m not the grouch in this situation.”
“Grouch?”
“You’re grumpy,” you said, “and you know it.”
“No one has ever called me that before.”
“You’re kidding.”
“I assure you, I’m not.”
“Well, we were all thinking it,” you replied, leaning back against your palms, head tilted to one side. “You’re insanely grumpy for someone who isn’t eighty years old.”
Bob laughed. “I think you’re the first person in a long time who has had the courage to say something like that to my face.”
“People are scared to admit the truth,” you replied. “Now are you going to tell me about this absolutely insane organizational system, or am I just going to sit here and drink wine and watch you do all the work?”
Bob grinned. “Hand me that stack.”
For the next two hours, Bob taught you how to categorize files according to his preference. Whereas Molly filed them according to the calendar year, Bob liked to group patient files all together and then chronologically within.
By the time you were done, two bottles of wine sat nearly empty on Molly’s desk as you lay spread out on the ground, eyes closed, as Bob clapped his hands together. “Done.”
You groaned, tossing one arm over your face. “Fucking finally.”
“Is that a complaint, Dr. James?”
You opened one eye. “You’re not the only one who can be grumpy.”
“Would it make you feel better if I said I knew where Molly kept her candy stash?”
Your eyes flew open and you sat up quickly. “Candy?”
Bob pulled open a drawer that was full to the brim. Snickers and Reeses and Starbursts. Even a pack of Milano cookies. You reached in eagerly, pulling out a Nerds rope and tearing open the package. “I’m saved.”
Bob chuckled, leaning back against the file cabinet, his legs outstretched in front of him. The two of you were facing each other directly, your back against the wooden desk. He took a bite out of a Twix bar. “So that’s the key to your heart? Candy?”
“And Hermes.”
Bob frowned. “What’s an Hermes?”
You rolled your eyes. “A purse, Bob. The purse.”
“How is a purse better than candy?”
“It’s not just a purse, it’s a statement.”
He shook his head. “Sometimes I don’t understand you.”
“I don’t understand you at all either,” you replied. “One minute you hate me. The next minute you’re offering me wine on a dirty floor.”
“I thought you were the one who hated me,” Bob said quietly.
“Same here.”
He shook his head again, running his fingers through his hair to comb it back into place. “I never hated you, Olive. I just didn’t know you.”
“And now that you know me?” you whispered. “What do you think?”
“I think you’re amazing.”
And despite the fact that you were drunk, and so was Bob, your head started to scream. Because your heart knew that he was telling the truth. The pink flush across his cheeks and the tips of his ears was a dead giveaway.
“Amazing, huh?” you said quietly. “I’m going to hold you to that next time you get mad at me for something.”
Bob rocked forward onto his knees, bending over toward the open desk drawer to your left. But just before his fingertips could land in the drawer, he pivoted, one hand coming to rest on the top of the desk above your head, his face only a few inches from yours. Your breath was heavy in your chest, his blue eyes glued to yours and before you knew it, Bob’s lips were on yours, his free hand wrapped around the back of your neck, tugging you in closer as your fingertips reached out, circling his wrist.
He tasted sweet like chocolate, and so much more passionate than you had expected.
Then, without warning, he pulled away, eyes wide.
Your voice was raspy as you caught your breath. “Bob–”
He leaned back onto his feet, standing up. “I have to go.”
Before you could even get to your feet, Bob had his shoes on, the empty bottles of wine scooped up in his arms. He turned back to you, blue eyes wild. “I’ll see you on Monday,” he said before hurrying down the hallway, swinging the door open and jogging down the steps.
You leaned your arms against the wooden desk and pressed a finger to your lip, the heat of Bob’s kiss still warm on your skin.
CH. 4 Conflict of Interest
Summary: Jake realizes he might actually like Maya. Phoenix is none to pleased with this.
Notes: Cursing, Fighting, Mentions of Alcohol
Word count: 2.8k
Jake rolled over and reached for Maya only to grab pillows and some of the blanket. He laid there for a second remembering the events that transpired. Jake could still smell the warm vanilla scent from Maya on her pillows. Still in his underwear Jake got out of the bed and looked around for something to cover up with. On a chair he saw his clothes from the night before folded up with a note on top. There are some sweatpants and some old T-shirts in the closet if you want to borrow some more comfortable clothes. Jake crossed the room and opened the closet door. A plethora of oversized clothes hung neatly organized by color and style. Jake grabbed a pair of black sweatpants and a green shirt that had another band logo on it. Peeking his head into the studio to see if maybe Maya had gone in there Jake found no one. Upstairs he heard some noise. The daggers were all probably raiding the kitchen for much needed hangover cures. Walking up the steps Jake couldn’t help but be thankful he hadn’t drunk too much last night. Thinking he could start to give everyone shit for their hangovers, Jake emerged ready to let loose. The only person he saw was Bob. “Hey Floyd, have you seen Maya?” Jake inquired. “Yeah, her and Natasha went out for some supplies. They should be back soon.” Bob answered. Jake sighed; he had hoped to see Maya in the morning. That was something that helped Jake determine a next step with girls was how they looked in the morning. He thought about Maya in just a t-shirt with messy hair and a voice as soft as her blankets. Getting lost in his thoughts, Jake hadn’t noticed Javy and Mickey escorting the girls they had been with, out the front door. It wasn’t until Javy placed a hand on Jake’s shoulder that made him snap back to reality. “So, bro where did you disappear to last night?” Javy asked. “Come on, when have you known me to share my secrets.” Jake joked, not wanting to reveal he was with Maya. “Looks like you got lucky though?” Jake asked. “Yeah, Twins, but I had to take one for the team. Mickey was the one who got lucky. My twin just wanted to cuddle.” Javy responded. Before Jake could inquire about Mickey the front door swung open, a tired Natasha walked in with a couple jugs of orange juice. Maya followed right behind her with a couple grocery bags in her hands.
“Good morning, everyone. I’ll be making some breakfast and we have the stuff for mimosas. Little hair of the dog for those who need it.” A cheerful Maya said walking into the kitchen. “Do you need any help?” Bob asked. “You know I think I got it, but if you want to help, I could use a good back popping, I think I slept on it wrong or something.” Maya said. Jake couldn’t help but smirk. Whether Maya was telling the truth or just covering up the real reason, he knew her back was hurting because of him. Bob walked over to Maya and had her cross her arms over her chest, embracing her from behind Bob picked up Maya and squeezed her. A couple pops rippled through Maya as a look of relief washed over her. “Thank you.” Maya said as she unpacked the rest of the groceries. As the last two woke up, Jake’s wish of getting Maya alone again wasn’t going to happen any time soon. He resided him at the counter across from Maya watching her cook. Natasha finished making a mimosa for everyone; their first drink of the day. “So, I have to go to work here in a little bit, until three. There is an extra car, the keys are hanging up by the door in the garage. Go get your things and I’ll meet you back here.” Maya said to Natasha. “Okay, is there anything we need that I can grab while we’re out?” Natasha asked “Uh! NO! Hello, are you still drunk? What did we just do?” Maya shouted. Natasha mocked her friend quietly and stuck her tongue out at her when she wasn’t looking. Jake couldn’t help but notice how the two women did act like siblings. After a while Jake drifted out to the back patio joining the men of the dagger squad. “I hope we get to go to a strip club soon, I have a wad of cash that is burning a hole in my pocket.” Javy threw out. “Javy you wouldn’t know what to do if a beautiful women came up to you asking for a dance.” Mickey joked. “Okay, here you go. Green chili, eggs, potatoes and bacon. There are also tortillas in the kitchen. I have to go get ready and head out.” Maya said making herself a small bowl of food. The daggers wasted no time getting their plates ready. “Mm! Who knew she could make chili. I might make her mine just on the promise of her cooking alone.” Rueben said. “I might have already beat you to it.” Jake said, thinking it would pass over. However, Natasha caught the remark. “What did you say?” she asked sharply looking at Jake. “Nothing.” Jake remarked. Tension started to build in the air. Jake finished his second plate and disappeared into the house. Even with Jake out of sight the energy coming from Natasha could not be ignored. While the rest of the daggers departed into the house to get ready Natasha stayed outside trying to plan what she was going to say to Jake. She knew once he had his sights set on someone it was hard to talk him out of it. However, this was Natasha’s best friend in the entire world. The person she could call to help her hide a body. There was no way Natasha was going to let Jake do what he was known for to her person. As the rest of the men came back outside, Bob, tried to talk Natasha down from the ledge he could see her ready to jump from. “Your friend looks like she could chew Jake and spit him out. Don’t fight him, let him make a fool out of himself.” Bob said. “It’s not that, I just don’t want him to have the chance to make a fool out of himself.” Natasha said. “Let’s just go to the hotel, pick up our things and cool off?” Bob suggested. “Okay, but I need to say something to him, so he knows to stay away from Maya.” Natasha finished. Bob just nodded his head and walked away from Natasha. Before long the daggers took the extra car left for them back to their hotel to grab their bags. To much of the relief of everyone Natasha was settled in the back of the SUV and Jake was the one driving. Pulling into the hotel, Jake was blissfully unaware of the chewing coming his way. As the daggers went to their rooms, Natasha followed Bob into the room he checked into with Jake.
As the others grabbed their bags they piled into Bob and Jake’s shared room. Natasha felt she needed to make it known to the whole group that they were to stay away from her friend. “Okay, I need to make you aware of some things.” Natasha started. “While she has been a ray of sunshine and a gracious host, Maya is not one to play with or fool around with. She has been through too much and needs someone who will stick around. Not a quick fling.” Natasha said looking exclusively at Jake. “Phoenix” Mickey started. “No! This is not up for discussion. She’s my friend and you’re my friends as well and I don’t want to be in the middle of it. I will always pick Maya over you guys, no offense.” She let out. “Calm down Nix, no one is going to make you pick.” Jake let out, still oblivious that Natasha was addressing only him. “Listen Bagman. Stay away from my friend. She is not your plaything while we’re out here.” Natasha retorted. “Well, that might be too late. We might have slept together last night. But I promise I’m not going to hu” Jake was cut off by Natasha lunging at him. The room erupted into chaos. Natasha on top of Hangman trying to land a blow, she was being pulled by Mickey, Rueben and Rooster. The three men held Natasha back and guided her to the window. “Natasha calm down okay, just calm down.” Rooster said. “Seresin, you end it now or I will do it for you!” Natasha shouted. “I don’t need this. Javy, will you grab my bags, I’m out of here. I’ll be on the strip; I’ll find my way back to the house.” Jake said as he exited the room. Walking out into the hot day, Jake couldn’t help but curse himself and the hot day. Walking to The House of Blues Jake didn’t know where Maya was but he figured he could start where he first met her and try to pry some information out of those who knew Maya. Walking into the club, Jake was one of three people in the place. With no server in sight Jake sat at the bar. To his luck the same bartender was working this morning. “Hi soldier. What can I get you?” Lola asked. “The number of Maya Atwell.” Jake replied flatly. “Still working on that one huh?” Lola said. “Yes and no. Her friend is a friend of mine, and we are staying at Judy’s place, and I just want to let her know we got separated. She went to work this morning and she didn’t say where.” Jake said half telling the truth. “Well if you’re out at Judy’s place then you actually know Maya. Let me write down her number for you. It’s Saturday so she is probably at The Mint Tavern.” Lola said as she wrote down ten digits. “Thank you so much Lola.” Jake left a ten on the bar for her. Leaving The House of Blues Jake hailed a cab and let the driver know to drive to the tavern where Maya worked.
The short ride to the tavern gave Jake enough time to wonder what Natasha meant by Maya has been through a lot. As he paid the cab driver, Jake was still wondering what Maya had been through. Walking into the nearly empty tavern, Jake couldn’t immediately see Maya. He once again settled at the bar. Waiting for a bartender Jake was starting to lose hope that he was in the wrong place. An older lady came out of a door with Maya following behind her. Both were carrying cases of wine. Jake knew Maya hadn’t seen him yet, so he cleared his throat. Both women looked at Jake. The older lady said something to Maya and disappeared behind the door. Maya walked over to Jake. “I thought you were supposed to be at the house or hotel?” Maya said. “Yeah, well I needed to get away from those guys. You never gave me your number, so I had to track you down. Your friend Lola gave it to me.” Jake let out waiving a napkin around. Maya let out a chuckle. “Well, I have to help set up our new part of the bar if you want to help, or I could have Joan make sure your glass is never empty” Maya suggested. “I’ll just sit here for a few. I have a few things I need to mull over.” Jake answered. Maya nodded and walked away. Joan came out and studied Jake before she asked him for his drink order. “I’ll take a long island iced tea.” Jake answered. Joan whipped up Jake his drink and went back to help her counterpart. Waiting for Maya to get off work Jake had a total of four long island iced teas. A little tipsy Jake knew he had to ask Maya about her past. Saying goodbye to her friend, Maya headed in Jake’s direction. “Okay Ken doll you ready to go back to the house and get ready for a concert?” Maya asked. “Yeah, let’s go before I get too drunk.” Jake said. Walking to her car Maya could help but ask why Jake was on his own. “Phoenix yelled at me for getting involved with you and I left because three of the boys held her back and I didn’t want to be around the rest because I didn’t want to answer their questions.” Jake said. “Oh, I see. Well, you have to understand Natasha is like my big sister. You have to take what she says with a grain of salt. Don’t let it get you down fly boy.” Maya stated. “What else did Natasha have to say?” Maya asked. “That you have been through a lot and you need someone who will be around. What have you been through Maya? I know about your ex, kind of. But she made it sound like your life has been nothing but tragedy.” Jake uttered. Taking a second to unlock her car and getting into the driver’s side Maya knew this would come up. Jake slipped in the passenger side waiting for an answer. “First off, she has no right to tell you guys that and second, I have had a lot happen to me and some people might chalk it up to be tragedy, but it made me who I am, so I like to think of it as character development.” Maya answered. Her reply was enough for Jake. Pulling out of her parking spot Maya turned her radio to a classic rock station. The ride to the house was filled with Jake and Maya singing along to Aerosmith, Guns n Roses, and Journey. As the two walked into the house they didn’t think about what was waiting for them. A silence fell over the house when Jake and Maya walked in.
Studying their faces Maya noticed one was missing. “Where’s Natasha?” Maya asked. “Right here, we need to talk.” Natasha said, grabbing her friend by the arm. Walking to Natasha’s room Maya couldn’t help but roll her eyes as she was being dragged. Sitting on an unmade bed Maya braced herself for the lecture she was about to receive. After Natasha shut the door, she sat across from her friend. “What the hell are you thinking?” Natasha asked. “What do you mean?” Maya said coyly. “You know what I mean. You and Jake? I mean he’s not a bad guy, but he’s not made for long term relationships. Do you really want to get hurt again? Because I can guarantee Jake will hurt you.” Natasha let out. “Nat, I’m a big girl. I can take care of myself, besides who said I was looking for a serious relationship?” Maya responded. “Maya, I know you, you don’t do flings, but if you say you can take care of yourself than who am I to say anything. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.” Natasha finished. The women exited the bedroom. “Okay!” Maya shouted. “Let’s get ready and head over to The Chelsea for Florida Georgia Line!” The daggers jumped up and went to their respective rooms to get their best looks together. Maya and Natasha got ready in the basement together. “What are you wearing?” Maya inquired. “I have this cute crop top and a jean skirt, or I have these jeans I could wear with my cowgirl boots.” Natasha said unsure. Two women looked over the outfits. “I think you should wear your jeans, but I have some shirts you can go through.” Maya suggested as she pulled back her hair. “What are you going to wear?” Natasha asked. “Ripped jeans, my black boots, a grey t-shirt and a flannel.” Maya said. “Wow, you are so sure of you outfit.” Natasha replied. “No, actually I had to try some on and get approval from their manager, this was the most suitable.” Maya said. After deciding on what to wear and pack with them the two women made their way upstairs. All of the men looked very handsome. Maya made them aware of this by whistling. Instantly they all smiled and blushed. Maya, who looked like she was in the middle of getting ready, had a couple backpacks in her hands. It was now four o’clock. Sound check was in 45 minutes. “Okay, let’s get into the SUV and head over there for soundcheck. Who has the keys?” said Maya leading everyone outside. Rooster shook the keys already getting into the driver’s seat. As the last person got into the vehicle Rooster started his drive to the venue.
