Kiwami CH01CM18: News From Outside

transcription:

[Scene opens on SHINJI sitting across from KIRYU in a visitation room. They're both in cheap folding chairs. SHINJI slides an envelope to the edge of his side of the glass, with bold red writing on it. KIRYU sits with his fingers laced in front of him on the table, fists down.]

KIRYU, quietly: Expulsion? Are you sure that's right, Shinji?

SHINJI, upset, nods, then says: Yes...

KIRYU: I killed the patriarch. Shouldn't it be complete banishment?

SHINJI: Tojo Clan Third Chairman Sera himself... decided on an expulsion.

KIRYU: What do you mean?

SHINJI: I don't know the details. But Kazama-san told me to give this letter of expulsion to you, sir.

KIRYU: What'll happen to the Dojima Family?

SHINJI: Kazama-san's family is taking command.

KIRYU: I see.

GUARD, from his chair behind KIRYU: Time's up!

[KIRYU stands and turns to leave. SHINJI hesitates for a moment, then stands abruptly and slams his palm on the table.]

SHINJI, yelling: Sir! Yumi-san is missing!

[KIRYU turns to face him.]

SHINJI: Since the day after the incident! Yumi-san doesn't remember anything! She couldn't remember you or Nishiki... Then she disappeared from the hospital! I'm sorry! [He bows.] Kazama-san told me not to tell you.

[KIRYU places his hands on the table and leans closer to the glass.]

GUARD: Hey! I said time's up!

KIRYU, over GUARD: Is anyone looking for her?

SHINJI: Yes. Nishiki and Kazama-san are.

GUARD, putting a hand on KIRYU's shoulder and pulling him away from the glass: Are you deaf!?

[KIRYU turns to look at GUARD briefly, then back to SHINJI to continue speaking.]

KIRYU, resisting the GUARD tugging his shoulder: Shinji, take care of Yumi! And tell Nishiki to do the same!

SHINJI: I will. Understood, sir.

[Fade to black. Cinematic ends.]

Kiwami CH01CM14: Kiryu's Decision

transcription:

[Open on a shot of the front entrance to the Dojima Family office, whose glass doors lead into a small room with two elevators and nothing else. It is storming.]

[Cut to a shot of KIRYU throwing a door open.]

KIRYU: Yumi! Nishiki!

[Cut to opposite view. He stands at the end of a narrow hallway with three doors, one of which is slightly ajar. He approaches this one slowly. He grabs the doorknob deliberately and opens the door quietly.]

[He stands in the doorway of DOJIMA's office. To his left, NISHIKI kneels, holding a gun with both hands. In front of him, obscured by KIRYU's head, is DOJIMA's bloody corpse. A bullet wound can be seen below his left knee, staining his white pants. To KIRYU's right, YUMI lies on the floor, hunched over herself weakly. NISHIKI is breathing heavily.]

KIRYU, stunned: Nishiki...

[Camera focuses on NISHIKI first, then YUMI, then DOJIMA's blank eyes, implying this is how KIRYU registers the situation.]

KIRYU: Patriarch Dojima!

NISHIKI, disbelieving: Kiryu... The boss, he... [He turns to face KIRYU slowly, terrified, words shaky.] He forced himself on Yumi.

[NISHIKI turns back towards the floor. KIRYU runs to YUMI, and tries to help her sit up, while NISHIKI continues.]

NISHIKI: So... I shot him... I lost it, so I shot him... I shot him...

KIRYU, holding YUMI's arms: Yumi. Yumi!! [He yells the second time.]

[YUMI cowers, her hands held up to her face. She's shuddering.]

KIRYU: Hey... Talk to me!

NISHIKI: I killed him... A direct Tojo associate...

[NISHIKI is trembling. Thunder and lightning break through the scene frequently. Beat.]

KIRYU, calmly: Nishiki. Take Yumi and get out.

NISHIKI, sitting up for the first time: Are you nuts? [He stands.] You take her and go!

KIRYU: If you were gone, what would happen to your sister!?

[NISHIKI gasps.]

KIRYU: Isn't the next operation her last? How is she going to get through it without you?

[NISHIKI looks conflicted.]

KIRYU: You know you can't be here.

NISHIKI, taking a step forward, voice high and quivering: But... What about you?

[A siren starts from offscreen. NISHIKI gasps and looks towards the window. KIRYU stands, bringing YUMI with him. She staggers, and moves loosely and dazedly, as if she's been drugged.]

KIRYU: Just go, Nishiki. [He walks YUMI over to NISHIKI.] Take care of Yumi. [He gently pushes her to NISHIKI.]

NISHIKI, pleading, anguished: Kiryu!

KIRYU, yelling: Go!

[NISHIKI hesitates, but stumbles out with YUMI.]

[Fade to black. Cinematic ends.]

Kiwami CH01CM03: Lending a Hand

transcription:

[text appears onscreen: "...The Previous Day September 30, 1995 Late Night"]

[A car with SHINJI (driver) and KIRYU (passenger) pulls up to a building in Kamurocho and stops. SHINJI turns to KIRYU.]

SHINJI: Sir?

KIRYU, opening his eyes (he appears to have been resting): Yeah?

SHINJI: Sorry about this. I shouldn't have to drag you out on a regular collection.

KIRYU, sitting up: I told you, don't worry about it, Shinji.

SHINJI: ...Thanks

[KIRYU opens the car door and steps out.]

[Camera stops on SHINJI's face, and time freezes. Text appears onscreen that reads "SHINJI TANAKA of the Dojima Family"]

[Time resumes. Cut to KIRYU looking up at the building they're about to enter. Time stops and text appears onscreen that reads "KAZUMA KIRYU Lieutenant Advisor of the Dojima Family, a Tojo Clan subsidiary".]

[Time resumes, and the screen fades to black.]

Kiwami, CH01CM19: The Inmate Assassin

transcription:

[Camera zooms out from KIRYU's lunch tray. He's in the cafeteria, surrounded by other prisoners, who eat silently.]

[Shot of a prisoner's hand (BREAD GUY) reaching for a bread roll. Another prisoner's hand (STABBER) appears and stabs the BREAD GUY's hand with a fork. BREAD GUY cries out and holds his stabbed arm, reeling with pain.]

STABBER: Asshole... The fuck is your problem, huh!?

GUARD 1, rushing in from offscreen: You! What are you doing!?

[GUARD 1 puts STABBER in a hold and pulls him up and away from his seat. BREAD GUY continues holding his wounded arm.]

STABBER, resisting: The hell!? Lemme go!

GUARD 1: Shut up and come on!

[GUARD 1 drags STABBER out of the cafeteria. GUARD 2 rushes up to BREAD GUY and begins examining his injury, then pulls him from his seat and out of the cafeteria as well. Camera pans out, revealing another prisoner (DINER) who has been watching. He is sitting to KIRYU's right, holding a fork in his fist in a manner ill suited for eating.]

DINER: Man, what a dangerous place.

[KIRYU turns to look at him, then looks ahead, ignoring him, as he continues.]

DINER, to KIRYU: And hey... This one here looks like he fits right in. You're the one, right? [Leans in closer to KIRYU, still holding his fork closely to his face, tongs pointed away from him.] The yakuza who killed his boss?

KIRYU: Shut up and eat.

DINER: As dignified as they say... [turns back to center.] The Dragon of Dojima. Dojima Family Lieutenant Advisor [he adjusts his hold on his fork], Kazuma Kiryu.

[DINER swings his arm, attempting to stab KIRYU's eye with the fork. KIRYU catches his arm. Neither budge, but the other prisoners get up. Some fret.]

PRISONER: What's going on!?

[DINER escapes KIRYU's grasp and steps back. Several prisoners push the two long dining tables so that they create a sort of triangular arena with KIRYU at the center. Various PRISONERS eye him up, preparing to fight. KIRYU looks around at them.]

[DINER sweeps a stool away with his leg, then hops up on a table, dual wielding forks.]

DINER, smiling: You took out a Tojo Clan officer... Surely you expected this? Give my regards to Patriarch Dojima when you see him in hell!

[Fade to black. Cinematic ends.]

[Opens on a GUARD walking up to a cell. Through the bars, we see KIRYU sitting on his bed. His head has been shaved, and he is wearing plain, gray prisoner clothes.]

[KIRYU turns his head.]

Kiwami, CH01CM16: Interrogation

transcription:

[Opens on DATE MAKOTO's fist slamming against a table.]

DATE: Bullshit!

[Scene is in an interrogation room. DATE sits across from KIRYU at a small table with a dinky lamp. The room is gray and dismal. KIRYU sits with his hands in his lap, unphased. DATE is agitated and hunched in his seat.]

KIRYU: I did it. We were arguing over money.

DATE, rising and holding the lamp up to KIRYU: Don't screw with me!

[KIRYU flinches at the light.]

[Another OFFICER, who was offscreen until now, speaks up. We do not see his face for the rest of the scene.]

OFFICER: Date-kun, that's enough.

DATE, yelling at OFFICER: It doesn't add up!

[Time freezes, and text appears onscreen reading "MAKOTO DATE Tokyo Metropolitan Police detective Criminal Investigation division". Time resumes.]

DATE (to OFFICER, again, standing up fully): He was just about to take charge of his own family. No way he'd throw that away. He's covering for someone!

OFFICER: This is an internal yakuza dispute. It hardly matters who did it. It's better to get this case closed as quickly and quietly as possible.

[OFFICER leaves. DATE slams his palms on the table.]

DATE: Damn it!

[DATE turns from the desk and pushes his chair back under it. He does it forcefully, so it shakes the lamp on the table. He stands facing the wall.]

KIRYU: Detective.

[DATE turns, listening.]

KIRYU: There should have been a ring among my possessions. Can I ask you to give that to Captain Kazama? And to tell him... [DATE turns to face KIRYU as he speaks.] I'm very sorry.

DATE: You're really pushing your luck.

KIRYU: I know.

[DATE walks to the door and opens it. He pauses, then turns his head to speak to KIRYU.]

DATE: No promises. [He walks out, leaving the door to close on its own.]

KIRYU, closing door about to obscure him: Right.

[Door shuts.]

[Fade to black. Cinematic ends.]

Kiwami CH01CM12: Disturbing News

transcription:

[Open on KAZAMA SHINTARO in his office, back facing the door. He is holding a cane with a golden dragon's head topping it. The door opens, and he turns to face it.]

KAZAMA: Ah, there you are.

[Camera cuts so we can see KIRYU enter with the briefcase he and SHINJI recovered from the DEBTOR earlier.]

KIRYU, bowing quickly: How do you do, sir?

KAZAMA: Fine, thanks.

[Time freezes. Text appears onscreen reading "SHINTARO KAZAMA Patriarch of the Kazama Family, a Dojima Family subsidiary". Time resumes. Camera quickly cuts to KIRYU sitting on a couch opposite KASHIWAGI OSAMU, who sits near where KAZAMA is standing. KIRYU lays the briefcase on the table and opens it towards them.]

KIRYU: Here's this month's cut. I'll leave it with you.

KASHIWAGI, smiling: Thanks.

[Time freezes. Text appears onscreen reading "OSAMU KASHIWAGI Captain of the Kazama Family, a Dojima Family subsidiary. Time resumes.]

KAZAMA, now sitting: You didn't do anything reckless?

KIRYU: No, sir.

KAZAMA: Kazuma. If you push things too far, the men under you will too. They all began as punks, looking for trouble wherever they could find it.

KASHIWAGI: Don't worry about Kiryu. He has his head on straight. Besides, the boss here has no room to talk... [he leans forward] You know, he used to be the Tojo Clan's finest assass—"

KAZAMA, sternly: Kashiwagi!

KASHIWAGI, bowing after a brief pause: I-I'm sorry.

KAZAMA to KASHIWAGI, without looking at him: Give us a minute, if you would.

KASHIWAGI: Yes, sir. [KASHIWAGI stands to leave, bows quickly, and exits. KIRYU watches him go.]

KAZAMA: To think, you're about to become patriarch of your own family. Seems like only yesterday you were just a child.

KIRYU: I wouldn't be here without you, sir. [He bows.] I'm grateful for that.

KAZAMA, tutting: Hey, don't get all formal on me.

KIRYU: Yes, sir.

[KAZAMA stands with some effort. He walks away from KIRYU to the shuttered window opposite the door.]

KAZAMA: Have you been to Sunflower recently?

KIRYU: No. Neither has Nishiki or Yumi.

KAZAMA: You should drop in now and again. That orphanage is more or less the only place all three of you can call home. [He turns back to face KIRYU as he finishes this.]

KIRYU, nodding: You're right.

[A light knock on the door. KIRYU and KAZAMA both turn towards it.]

KAZAMA: Yeah?

[A SUBORDINATE enters, bowing.]

SUBORDINATE: Sorry to bother you, sir. [He closes the door behind him. He bows at KIRYU and extends a blocky cell phone towards him.]

SUBORDINATE: Kiryu-san, you have a phone call. It's Shinji-san.

[KAZAMA nods at KIRYU. KIRYU takes the call.]

KIRYU: It's me.

SHINJI, stressed: This is Shinji! Reina-san told me to get you, sir! A second ago, Patriarch Dojima grabbed Yumi-san and took off!

KIRYU, standing: Yumi!? What does the boss want with her!?

[KAZAMA is paying attention to the call.]

SHINJI: I don't know the details. But, Nishiki took off after the boss as soon as he heard.

KIRYU: Nishiki? Where'd he go?

SHINJI: The Dojima Family office. The one next to the theater!

KIRYU: Got it. I'm heading there now! [KIRYU hangs up and places the phone on the table.]

KAZAMA: What's wrong?

KIRYU, anxious: It's Dojima... Apparently the boss took Yumi by force. And then Nishiki went off to save her by himself.

KAZAMA, calmly: This sounds bad. If a girl catches his eye, the boss is capable of just about anything. Add Nishikiyama to the mix, and who knows what might come of it.

KIRYU: I have to go. [He turns to leave.]

KAZAMA: Don't!

KIRYU stops and turns around, saying: What?

KAZAMA: If you get involved, you'll just make it worse for all three of you. You need to tough this out.

[KIRYU grits his teeth, looking conflicted.]

KAZAMA: Stay put, at least until I can do something.

[KIRYU's expression turns to one of resolve. He turns to face KAZAMA.]

KIRYU: Sir. Yumi and Nishiki are practically family to me. So... I need to go, now! [He opens the door and runs out.]

KAZAMA, standing still: Kazuma!

[KIRYU's footsteps trail off. He does not stop.]

Kiwami CH01CM10: Kiryu's Present

transcription:

[Open on YUMI sitting in front of a birthday cake with lit candles. Zoom out to reveal NISHIKI and KIRYU on either side of her, in the dark in Serena. YUMI blows out the candles, the lights flick on, and NISHIKI and KIRYU both pull party poppers, showering her in confetti.]

REINA: Yumi-chan! Happy birthday!

NISHIKI: Happy birthday, Yumi!

KIRYU: Happy birthday!

YUMI, laughing: Thanks, everyone!

NISHIKI (quickly): Here, Yumi. I got you a present.

[NISHIKI holds out his beautifully wrapped gift.]

YUMI: What, really? Can I open it now?

NISHIKI: Of course.

[YUMI unwraps NISHIKI's gift.]

YUMI: Wow, it's gorgeous! [She turns the box out towards the others, showing them.] Are you sure!? Is this really mine to keep?

NISHIKI: Absolutely.

[KIRYU looks somewhat sheepish. REINA taps his arm.]

KIRYU: Umm, Yumi.

[YUMI makes a noise of attention.]

KIRYU: Actually... I have a present for you too.

YUMI: Oh, really? Thank you!

KIRYU, retrieving his gift: Here... Here you go.

[Camera cuts to brief shots of NISHIKI and REINA, who are watching intently. YUMI opens the plain ring box.]

YUMI: A ring... [She picks it up out of the box gently.] Kazuma, is this for me?

NISHIKI, laughing, looking only at YUMI: Hey hey, what's up with that tacky ring? You find it in the bargain bin?

REINA, waving at him: C'mon, don't be mean!

YUMI: Oh! It has my name engraved on it!

KIRYU: Was that too much?

YUMI, enthusiastically: No, not at all!

[YUMI slides the ring on her right ring finger.]

YUMI: Thank you. I'll treasure it.

KIRYU: Sure.

[REINA looks down, somewhat glum. NISHIKI and YUMI laugh happily together offscreen.]

[Screen fades to black, initiating a flashback. REINA, YUMI, and CUSTOMER are sitting on the couch. It's the discussion KIRYU and NISHIKI walked in on at the beginning of CM09.]

REINA: By the way, isn't it almost your birthday, Yumi-chan?

CUSTOMER: Oh, is it? I'll have to get you a present! How about... a ring?

YUMI, looking a touch awkward: A ring? Thank you for the offer, but... That would be too much.

CUSTOMER: Huh? What do you mean?

YUMI: You know, I'd want a ring from... From someone I was in love with, so...

[REINA looks surprised.]

CUSTOMER: Oh, what? Are you saying you're in love with someone?

YUMI: Oh no, it's not like that, but... Sorry, but it's the thought that counts!

CUSTOMER: Aw, did I just get rejected, Yumi-chan!?

[CUSTOMER and YUMI laugh. YUMI apologizes (excluded from subtitles). REINA looks on thoughtfully.]

NISHIKI, offscreen: Hey!

[REINA turns. NISHIKI and KIRYU are sitting at the bar.]

NISHIKI: We're paying customers too, y'know!

[Fade to black. Return to YUMI's birthday party. Begins with a shot of NISHIKI's necklace, forgotten on the table in front of him, still in its box.]

REINA, cheekily (to NISHIKI): So, what are you going to get me when my birthday rolls around?

[KIRYU makes a noise of surprise.]

NISHIKI: No idea.

REINA, enthusiastically: Then Kiryu-chan, you can give me a necklace. And Nishikiyama-kun can get me a... A ring, maybe?

NISHIKI: Seriously? Well, if that's what you want.

[REINA looks flattered and pleased. She leans back and giggles. NISHIKI and YUMI join in.]

Kiwami CH01CM09: Birthday Planning

transcription:

[Fade in on YUMI talking with a CUSTOMER in Serena. Text in the corner of the screen reads "A Few Months Ago". YUMI, the CUSTOMER, and REINA are sitting on the couch together, REINA separated from them. Serena appears to be empty besides them.]

YUMI: Sorry, but it's the thought that counts!

CUSTOMER: Aw, did I just get rejected, Yumi-chan!?

[Door opens; enter NISHIKI and KIRYU. They sit down at the bar. NISHIKI looks over at CUSTOMER laughing heartily with YUMI.]

NISHIKI, yelling: Hey! We're paying customers too, y'know!

[REINA, startled, puts a hand to her mouth and stands, bows quickly to CUSTOMER (who is busy looking at YUMI), and hurries over to the bar.]

REINA: Sorry, sorry. That guy's practically a regular these days. The usual, then?

NISHIKI: Sure.

[KIRYU and NISHIKI both light cigarettes.]

NISHIKI: So, is that little venture going to take off?

KIRYU: Huh? Oh, the casino thing? I don't know. I'm not really into the idea of conning money out of civilians...

NISHIKI: What's wrong with you? This is your time to prove you can handle your own family. If you pull some nice numbers with this, it's all but sealed. You'd be at the top of Dojima's Kiryu Family! A patriarch among the Tojo Clan's legends. This is no time to hesitate, man.

KIRYU: I'm already a lieutenant advisor. It's a respectable job. Isn't that enough?

NISHIKI, increasingly emphatically: As usual, you can't see the forest for the trees. A lieutenant is respectable in name only. I mean, sure, you're not exactly hurting... But that's not how you move up in the world. You've hit the glass ceiling. And now, thanks to Kazama-san, you're finally getting your big chance. If you want to make this happen, then you've gotta work your ass off. Otherwise you'll just get burned and tossed out with the garbage.

[A lull.]

NISHIKI: It's any yakuza's dream to be patriarch of his own family. Am I wrong?

KIRYU: I wonder...

[REINA sets KIRYU's drink in front of him.]

REINA: Sorry for the wait.

[REINA sets NISHIKI's drink in front of him. NISHIKI and KIRYU nod to each other in a casual toast, then drink.]

REINA, energetically, looking between them: By the way, I was just talking to one of the other customers about birthdays. You know Yumi's is coming up, right? Did you guys get her anything? A present, perhaps?

KIRYU makes a surprised noise, then says: Ah... I didn't realize it was already that time...

NISHIKI: Dumbass, did you actually forget?

KIRYU: No, I've just been so busy lately...

REINA: How about you, Nishikiyama-kun? Did you get her something?

NISHIKI, pleased with himself: Of course. I got her a pink diamond necklace that'll really suit her.

REINA: Ooh! Sounds expensive!

NISHIKI, through a laugh: Right? I ordered it months ago, and it finally came. Actually, I brought it with me today. [NISHIKI leans back and pulls out a box, wrapped in a pale pink with a yellow bow.] All wrapped up and ready to go.

REINA, putting her hands together: Oh, you really went all in! We should have a little party!

NISHIKI: Oh, good idea. I can go get us a cake from a nice little bakery I know.

REINA: Really? That would be great, thank you.

[KIRYU looks glum. NISHIKI and REINA pause and look at him.]

REINA: Kiryu-chan, does that sound good?

KIRYU: Hm. Could we maybe take a rain check?

REINA: Absolutely not! You still have time, so why not go buy her something?

KIRYU: But I wouldn't know what to get her. [He looks across the room at YUMI and CUSTOMER talking.]

REINA: I know, how about a ring?

KIRYU: A ring, huh?

NISHIKI, somewhat condescendingly: I think that sounds safe enough. Good choice, Reina.

REINA, giggling: You're welcome.

KIRYU: What kind of ring should I get?

NISHIKI: You'll have to use your brain, bro. I can't help you with that one.

REINA: Don't make it harder than it needs to be. If your heart's in it, she'll appreciate it.

[KIRYU hums, thinking, worried.]

[Fade to black. Cinematic ends.]

[Fade in on Serena, with REINA behind the bar and NISHIKIYAMA AKIRA seated in front of her. KIRYU enters]

KIRYU: It's always so nice and quiet in here. [He bends down to place the briefcase on the floor next to his chair, then takes a seat next to NISHIKI.]

REINA: Because with you two around, normal customers can't enjoy their drinks! So I closed up for the night.

KIRYU: Reina, where's Yumi?

[NISHIKI pours KIRYU a drink from a small bottle next to him.]

REINA: She's out shopping. She figured you guys would be hungry.

NISHIKI, placing KIRYU's drink in front of him: True that. So, how's the Kiryu Family coming along?

[Time freezes, text appears reading "AKIRA NISHIKIYAMA of the Dojima Family". Time resumes.]

KIRYU: It's not even a done deal yet. That's up to the boss.

NISHIKI: Like the boss is gonna object. Kazama-san's got his weight behind it. He's the one keeping the Dojima Family afloat at this point anyway. Dojima is somethin' else these days. All he does is yak about his glory days.

KIRYU: Watch it, Nishiki.

[NISHIKI says nothing, then lights a cigarette. He takes a drag and scoffs.]

NISHIKI: You beat me to the punch again, eh?

KIRYU: Come on, Nishiki. How's your sister doing?

NISHIKI: Next month... She's up for another surgery. It'll probably be the last.

KIRYU: The last?

NISHIKI, looking down, glancing at KIRYU briefly: She can only hold out so much longer. If this one doesn't work, then...

KIRYU: I see...

[Mood is low. Door opens and REINA looks up; enter SAWAMURA YUMI, with plastic shopping bags in each hand.]

YUMI: Oh! You guys are here.

[Camera zooms in on KIRYU's smiling face, cutting NISHIKI out of frame.]

NISHIKI: Yumi!

YUMI, approaching the bar: What? Drunk already? How dare you start without me! [Her tone suggests she's not upset, only teasing. She places a hand on NISHIKI and KIRYU's shoulders and looks between them.]

KIRYU: Go ahead, be my guest.

[YUMI laughs. Camera zooms in on a silver ring with a red stone, the same one from CH01CM02, on the ground of DOJIMA's office after he's murdered. We know from this it has "YUMI" engraved on the inside.]

[Montage of the four laughing and talking silently, while music plays in the background. Camera cuts between focus shots of each of them. KIRYU, YUMI, and REINA look more engaged, while NISHIKI stares at the ground, before YUMI shakes his shoulder and draws him into the conversation. Wide shot of the bar, with YUMI placed under an artificial spotlight between them all.]

[Fade to black. Cinematic ends.]

Kiwami CH01CM07: The Majima Connection

transcription:

[Fade in on KIRYU standing over GOON, who he has just beaten in a fight.]

GOON: Wh-Who ARE you?

[MAJIMA GORO appears at the entrance of the alley, currently offscreen.]

MAJIMA: I saw that shit, Kiryu-chan!

[KIRYU and GOON turn to face MAJIMA, who is walking towards them with a closed, long black umbrella over his right shoulder. He has an entourage of UNDERLINGS behind him.]

GOON: S-Sir! Kiryu!? You mean...

MAJIMA: Yep, the Dragon of Dojima, Kazuma Kiryu-chan!

[KIRYU bows at MAJIMA.]

KIRYU: It's been a while, Majima-san.

[Camera cuts to MAJIMA's smiling face and time freezes. Text appears on screen, which reads "GORO MAJIMA Captain of the Shimano Family, Patriarch of the Majima Family". Time resumes.]

MAJIMA (walking around behind KIRYU): Put a lid on that formal shit. Heard you were gonna head up yer own family soon. By the way... That bar over there [nods towards Serena]. That's where your sweetheart works, yeah? I heard she's real easy in the eyes... Everyone's sayin' so. [MAJIMA has walked around behind GOON and is now face-to-face with KIRYU again.] They all just want in on the action! Anyway... [glances at GOON] Whadda we do with this fool?

GOON: I'm sorry! I didn't know it was you, Kiryu-san!

KIRYU: No, it's fine.

MAJIMA, looking at the sky, exasperated: Too soft, Kiryu-chan! Soft as a marshmallow! Ya gotta make things right... Like so!

[MAJIMA punctuates this with a smack from his umbrella to GOON in the ground. He continues hitting him.]

MAJIMA: I ain't even done! Ya! Ya! Take it!

[MAJIMA adjusts his grip on the umbrella and prepares to stab GOON with its sharp tip. As he's winding up, KIRYU grabs his forearm, stopping him.]

MAJIMA, turning to face KIRYU: The hell?

KIRYU: That's enough.

MAJIMA: I was only doin' it for you...

KIRYU: And I say it's enough, so...

[MAJIMA lowers his umbrella arm, and KIRYU lets go of it as he does so. MAJIMA turns towards KIRYU.]

MAJIMA, casually: Ohh...? Well, fine then. But when ya get your own men, you're gonna have to lay down the law. [To UNDERLINGS] Let's roll.

[MAJIMA turns to leave and begins to exit the alley.]

KIRYU: Yeah. I'll keep that in mind. But...

[MAJIMA slows and stops.]

MAJIMA: Huh? [Faces KIRYU] But what?

KIRYU: I'm going to do things my own way.

[MAJIMA's eye widens slightly, and he approaches KIRYU again.]

MAJIMA: Hmm... And what way is that? [He stops a few feet in front of KIRYU.]

KIRYU: It'll be the right way.

MAJIMA, stepping closer: The hell? You tryin' to start shit?

[MAJIMA and KIRYU's noses are a couple of inches apart. KIRYU is unflinching.]

MAJIMA: I'll fight you right here, right now!

KIRYU: No. I've got no reason to fight you. There's no point.

[MAJIMA slaps KIRYU across the face. KIRYU bends with the powerful blow, but remains on his feet.]

MAJIMA: How 'bout now? [KIRYU straightens.] That enough reason to fight?

KIRYU takes a breath, and says: If I've made you angry, Majima-san, I apologize.

MAJIMA, angered: What was that? [MAJIMA clenches his fist around his umbrella, the leather of his gloves creaking. He begins to hit KIRYU over the head with his umbrella, winding up a lot before each blow, as he continues goading him. The camera cuts to a couple of shots of garbage and the sky from the alley.]

MAJIMA: C'mon! Show me you've got some balls, and fight back!

[Camera cuts back to KIRYU at the end of a blow. Blood is flowing from his temple down his cheek. He's grunting in pain, but does not move from where he stands. After a couple more blows, he straightens and looks at MAJIMA.]

KIRYU: And with that...

[MAJIMA still looks angry, and he seems to be preparing for KIRYU to piss him off more.]

KIRYU: Are we done here?

MAJIMA, furious: Huh!?

[MAJIMA tosses the umbrella to the ground, eye wide. He pulls out and unsheathes his demonfire dagger slowly, with a brief menacing smile, then steps forward and points it at KIRYU's face.]

MAJIMA: You talk tough... But how long will that last?

[MAJIMA steps back and rears back. With a yell, MAJIMA lunges forward and moves to stab KIRYU, but halts right before the blade pierces between KIRYU's eyes. Again, KIRYU is unflinching. MAJIMA seems at a loss.]

MAJIMA retracts his dagger, and says: Whatever... No point? You're just makin' things harder on yourself. Deprivin' yourself for no damn reason. [He steps forward and places a hand on KIRYU's shoulder, continuing his air of friendly advice.] You think the world gives two shits if there's a point or not? Keep that up, and it'll break you.

KIRYU: You can see it however you want. But... Nothing you say is going to change my mind.

MAJIMA, quirking his head: No matter what happens?

KIRYU: Right.

[MAJIMA blinks and steps away, contemplative. He crosses his arms and they're both silent for a moment.]

MAJIMA, yelling suddenly: You got it, then!

[KIRYU blinks, taken aback.]

MAJIMA, excited: I'm gonna see those ideals of yours to the end! I'll have my eye on you, 24/7!

KIRYU, bewildered: What?

MAJIMA: And then, when there's a point... Are ya gonna be willing to fight me?

KIRYU, after a hesitant pause: I won't know until the time comes.

[MAJIMA's face shifts to one of surprise, then he ducks his head and claps his hands together and pumps his fists in celebration. For the rest of the scene, he moves around a lot more for emphasis.]

[KIRYU says nothing.]

MAJIMA: Hell yeah! Then all I need to do is come up with a plan to make ya fight me! [Turning, speaking to his UNDERLINGS] Let's bounce, guys!

UNDERLINGS, bowing: Yes, sir!

[MAJIMA struts out between his UNDERLINGS, then turns back to KIRYU.]

MAJIMA: See you soon, Kiryu-chan! Look forward to some fun!

[KIRYU says nothing.]

MAJIMA, leaving the alley: Man, this is gonna be sweet! [He claps again and, with a running start, jumps and clicks his heels.]

[UNDERLINGS exit with MAJIMA. KIRYU watches them go, still unamused.]

[Fade to black. Cinematic ends.]

[KIRYU is walking back to Serena, briefcase in hand. A MAJIMA FAMILY GOON bumps into KIRYU and falls on his ass while emerging from the back alley by Serena.]

GOON: Whoa! [Rising to his feet] Watch it, man! Tough guy, eh? What family you from!?

KIRYU, attempting to step around him: 'Scuse me.

GOON, blocking him: That ain't gonna cut it, asshole!

[Fade to black. Cinematic ends.]

Kiwami CH01CM05: The Debt Is Paid

transcription:

[Fade in on the DEBTOR and his fellows on the ground, evidently beaten. KIRYU is standing at the feet of the DEBTOR, who is sitting and looking up at him. SHINJI is offscreen.]

DEBTOR: I'm sorry! Please... forgive me!

[SHINJI reenters room from a side door with metal briefcase in his hands. He jogs over to KIRYU and holds it up to him.]

SHINJI: Sir! I got the money.

KIRYU, to the DEBTOR: It's what you owe. Don't blame me.

[Fade to black. Cinematic ends.]
