As a Certified Barclay Hater™️, I’m biased, but I cannot stand his character.
Maybe I just can’t separate him from his history in TNG, which reeks of incel/“nice guy” vibes to me. Bringing in legacy characters can do good things for ratings and all, but I would’ve preferred someone who isn’t constantly ignoring clear boundaries and steamrolling over others so he can do what he wants/thinks is right. It’s great that someone desperately wants to make contact with Voyager and help bring them home, but I think they could’ve accomplished that with a new character just as easily (if not better) than Barclay.
Just in Voyager, he crashes Troi’s vacation, and she herself points out how inappropriate that is. He also asks her when Riker’s showing up, to me indicating that he wouldn’t be crossing that particular boundary in Riker’s presence. Admiral Paris admonishes him for hanging out with a holographic version of his son because the actual people are an abstraction for Barclay. He has no regard for the real world relationships affected by his holodeck programs. Then be disobeys direct orders by breaking in to Starfleet and commandeering the equipment to make the wormhole, and he only gets away with it because it paid off. If he’d waited, Admiral Paris would’ve let him try his plan.
How dare this man be so relatable
#I also know you’re not up to that part in TNG on your rewatch so trying to stay within voyager context here#maybe I’m just a hater but he always rubbed me the wrong way#I totally get that he is some kind of neurodivergent rep but he constantly ignores CLEAR BOUNDARIES#my moral code says ND rep shouldn’t cross these particular lines#don’t get me wrong I love that Deanna shows up (almost) every time#he’s such a creep to me though#and the fact that his hologram does imitations also bugs me cause the ferengi wouldn’t have been the ones to program that#the casual misogyny baked into his character#he bothers me for so many reasons#certified barclay hater#I think Troi should’ve noped out of that counseling situation long before the events of Voyager
