Transparent PCBs: Flexible and Ceramic Circuit Boards with High Transmissivity
Transparent PCBs are an emerging technology that offers new possibilities in electronics design. By allowing for the integration of light-emitting and optical components, transparent PCBs enable innovative applications across various industries, such as medical devices, automotive lighting, and military systems. Their high optical transmissivity, allowing more light to pass through compared to traditional copper-clad PCBs, makes them a versatile solution for a range of use cases.
Transparent PCB Substrate Options
Transparent PCBs can be made using two main types of substrates: ceramic and glass. Each substrate offers unique characteristics:
Ceramic Transparent PCBs: These provide better heat conductivity than glass, making them ideal for heat-sensitive applications. However, their optical transmissivity is lower than glass, typically around 75% to 85%.
Glass Transparent PCBs: Composed of quartz and borosilicate glass, these substrates have the highest transmissivity, ranging from 99.5% to 99.99%. While glass excels in optical clarity, it has poorer thermal conductivity, which limits its use in heat-intensive environments.
Advantages of Transparent PCBs
Transparent PCBs offer several advantages over traditional PCBs:
Lightweight and Thin: These PCBs are lighter and thinner, making them suitable for applications where space and weight are critical factors.
Superior Optical Transmissivity: Their ability to allow light to pass through makes them ideal for use in light-emitting components and displays.
High Temperature Resistance: Glass can endure temperatures of up to approximately 1000°C, ensuring reliable performance even in harsh environments.
Troubleshooting Ease: The transparency of these PCBs allows engineers to easily inspect the components and trace lines, simplifying troubleshooting and maintenance.
Aesthetic Appeal: Transparent PCBs create a sleek, modern look, making them ideal for consumer electronics that require both functionality and style.
The Manufacturing Process for Transparent PCBs
The manufacturing process for transparent PCBs differs from traditional copper-clad boards. Instead of using copper layers, transparent PCBs are made using special polymer materials that are etched with conductive pathways. These materials are then laminated onto the board and coated with a protective layer. This method allows for the integration of components with varying optical properties. Furthermore, it is a more cost-effective and efficient process than traditional PCB manufacturing.
Types of Transparent PCBs
1. Transparent Flexible PCBs
Transparent flexible PCBs are produced using thin PET sheets that can be transparent or tinted in colors like light green, blue, or white. These flexible boards are particularly useful in applications where bending and folding are required, offering both flexibility and transparency.
Advantages:
High Reliability: Excellent electrical and mechanical performance ensures durability.
Space Saving: Flexible design allows for compact configurations.
Lightweight: Easy to handle and transport.
Cost-Efficient: Reduced material usage lowers production costs.
Versatility: Ideal for LED displays, wearable tech, automotive electronics, and more.
Better Signal Quality: Superior electrical characteristics enhance signal integrity.
Applications: Transparent flexible PCBs are used in a wide range of applications such as LED lighting displays, wearable technology, automotive electronics, smart contact lenses, and even electronic skins.
2. Transparent Ceramic Circuit Boards
Transparent ceramic circuit boards are made from materials such as alumina, magnesium oxide, or aluminum-magnesium spinel. These boards typically feature a transparent glass-based solder mask that allows the substrate to maintain its clarity, generally between 75% and 85%. While their conductive traces are not transparent, these boards offer excellent electrical insulation and thermal resistance.
Advantages:
Electrical Insulation: High electrical resistance makes them suitable for various applications.
Temperature Resistance: Capable of withstanding extreme temperatures.
Moisture and Chemical Resistance: Ideal for harsh environments.
Lightweight and Strong: Easy to handle and durable.
Cost-Effective: Less expensive than traditional circuit boards.
Applications: These transparent ceramic boards are used in optical sensors, high-power LEDs, infrared windows for missiles and airplanes, and other specialized industrial devices.

I. O que é cerâmica técnica?

What is PCB Assembly?
It’s the step in the manufacturing process in which you populate a blank board with the electronic components needed to make it into a functional printed circuit board. It’s these components that make a board into the circuit that enables an electronic product to function. PCB assembly typically takes place via one of two processes:
1. Surface-mount technology
SMT: SMT stands for “Surface Mount Technology“. The SMT components are very small sizes and comes in various packages like 0201, 0402, 0603, 1608 packages for resistors and capacitors. Similarly for Integrated circuits ICs we have SOIC, TSSOP, QFP and BGA.
The SMT components assembly is very difficult for human hands and can be time taking process so it is mostly done by automated pick and place machine.
2. Through-hole manufacturing
THT: THT stands for “Through hole Technology”. The components with leads and wires, like resistors, capacitors, inductors, PDIP ICs, transformers, transistors, IGBTs, MOSFETS are example.
The component has to be inserted on one side of PCB and pulled by leg on other side and cut the leg and solder it. The THT components assembly is usually done by hand soldering and is relatively easy.

Understand the difference between PCB and PCBA
I believe that many people are familiar with the PCB circuit board, and they may often hear about them in daily life, but they may not know much about the PCBA, and even will be confused with the PCB. So what is a PCB? How did PCBA evolve? What is the difference between PCB and PCBA? Let's take a look at it.
About PCB
PCB is short for Printed Circuit Board, because it is produced by electronic printing, it is called "printed" circuit board. PCB is an important electronic component in the electronics industry, it is the support body of electronic components and the carrier of electrical connection of electronic components. PCB has been extremely widely used in the manufacturing of electronic products, the reason why it can be widely used, its unique characteristics are summarized as follows:
1. High wiring density, small size, light weight, which is conducive to the miniaturization of electronic equipment.
2. Because the graphics are repetitive and consistent, the errors in wiring and assembly are reduced, and the maintenance, debugging and inspection time of equipment are saved.
3. It is conducive to mechanized and automated production, improves labor productivity and reduces the cost of electronic equipment.
4. The design can be standardized to facilitate interchangeability.
About PCBA
PCBA is short for Printed Circuit Board + Assembly, that is to say, PCBA is through the SMT by empty PCB board, and then through the DIP plug-in of the entire process.
Note: SMT and DIP are both ways of integrating parts on the PCB board, the main difference is that SMT does not require drilling on the PCB, and in DIP requires inserting the pin of the part into the already drilled hole.
SMT - Surface Mounted Technology, the main use of the mounting machine is to mount some micro parts to the PCB board, its production process is: PCB board positioning, printing solder paste, mounting components, reflow and inspection.
DIP is the "plug-in", that is, the insertion of parts on the PCB version, which is some parts that are larger in size and are not suitable for mounting technology when integrating parts in the form of plug-ins. Its main production process is: adhesive, plug-in components on the boards, inspection, wave soldering, brushing and finished inspection.
* The difference between PCB and PCBA *
From the above introduction, it can be known that PCBA generally refers to a processing process, which can also be understood as a finished circuit board, which can be counted as PCBA after the processes on the PCB board are completed. PCB refers to an empty printed circuit board with no parts on it.
In general, PCBA is a finished board; The PCB is a bare board.
