Nie jest tajemnicą moja wyjątkowa niechęć do cenzury i wszelkich w ogóle prób ograniczania wolności wypowiedzi. Jednakże w przypadku literatury, cenzura to dla mnie szczyt obrzydliwości. Niestety obrzydliwości praktykowanej przez każdą ze stron politycznych i obyczajowych sporów. Romanowi Giertychowi przeszkadzał antypolski „Transatlantyk” Gombrowicza. Grupa żydowskich rodziców w USA żądała wycofania z listy lektur „Olivera Twista”, a w wielu stanach uznano „Zwrotnik Raka” za dzieło nieobyczajne. Lista cenzurowanych dzieł jest niestety długa i jak do tej pory w tej dyscyplinie przodowała ciemna jak noc listopadowa prawica. Teraz lewa strona uznała, ��e czas prześcignąć rywala w sztafecie głupoty. „W pustyni i w puszczy” uznano za propagujące kolonialny obraz świata, a pod petycją o usunięcie tej książki z listy lektur podpisały się setki Polek i Polaków. Tylko czekać jak na kolejny ogień pójdą „Krzyżacy”, jako zagrażający polsko-niemieckiemu pojednaniu.
Dziwię się jednak, że do tej pory ideologiczne spory ominęły Marię Rodziewiczównę. Autorkę między innymi „Lata leśnych ludzi”, uznanego przez Jarosława M. Rymkiewicza za „jeden z najwspanialszych hymnów ku chwale polskości”. Rymkiewicz jest znanym wsteczniakiem popierającym panujący w Polsce reżim, co już powinno obudzić Waszą czujność.
Ja, zachęcony tą entuzjastyczną recenzją, przeczytałem „Lato leśnych ludzi” w zeszłym roku. Nie bardzo mi się podobało. Nie tylko ze względu na sentymentalizm i idealizacje postaci, ale przede wszystkim z powodu dziwnego podejścia autorki do ochrony przyrody. Niech was nie zmyli apoteoza dziewiczego lasu i wąchanie kwiatków przez głównych bohaterów. 
Kwiatki są, ale zupełnie innego rodzaju. Oto co w „leśnych ludziach” pisze się o puchaczu, gatunku prawnie chronionym:
„- Tuś mi krzyżacka wywłoko!  - (…) Teraz na cię sąd i prawo! (…) Ostatnia to twoja noc (…) Strzał padł, po sekundzie drugi (…) Jest troje młodych. Jeszcze białe, ledwie wyklute, a juz kłapia szczekami i w reke mnie dziobia (…) - Nie żywić przeklętego płodu! Łby im pokrecić! Rosomak cisnął na ziemię gniazdo i lęg. - Szczeźnijcie do ostatniego! - warknął”
Piękny hymn ku chwale polskości. Zastrzelenie dwóch dorosłych osobników i zniszczenie gniazda z młodymi.
Dalej wcale nie jest lepiej. Dostajemy opis zamordowania rysia (choć w obronie źrebięcia) w postaci matki karmiącej. Oto jak bohater powieści radzi sobie z miotem tego zagrożonego wymarciem kota:
„I pokazał Odrowąż dwie małe skórki kociąt. - Znalazł w dziupli dębowej. Podrapały mu szpetnie ręce, ale całe gniazdo szczezło dzięki tobie. A ot! I czerep masz na pamiątkę boju: mrówki oczyściły cudnie.”
A teraz my wszyscy musimy dawać na WWF, żeby pojawił się  choć cień szansy na odbudowę populacji tego wspaniałego kota. 
Dziwię się, że grupy lewicowo-zielone do tej pory nie odniosły się do tej lektury, która mnie osobiście wytrąciła z równowagi.
Autorka, co prawda próbuje mylić tropy promując wegetarianizm:
„Orlik dogonił go po chwili. - Zupełnie mi wuj apetyt odjął! - Od dawna mięsa nie jadam i coraz większy czuję doń wstręt.(…) Zresztą niegłodnym. Mam chleb, jagód nie brak ”
Znajdujemy także w „Lecie leśnych ludzi” ukłon w stronę ruchu LGBTQ:
„- Ot i nasz Tęczowy Most! - rzekł Żuraw. Wszyscy trzej wydali długi specjalnie swój okrzyk, zwykły akord, którym się rozproszeni na wyprawach zwoływali”
Nie wiem co to był za okrzyk, strach po lesie chodzić.
Być może właśnie ten ostatni wątek jest polisą ubezpieczeniową, która chroni Rodziewiczównę przed atakiem lewicy i ekologów. Otóż autorka ta jest jedną z głównych bohaterek „Homobiografii” Krzysztofa Tomasika. Pozycja ta ujawnia, a raczej potwierdza, to co sami jesteśmy w stanie stwierdzić patrząc na zachowane zdjęcia pisarki. Maria Rodziewiczówna, choć nazwisko ma dziewczęce i zwiewne niczym naręcza polnych kwiatów,  przyjmuje postać grubokościstego pana z fryzurą na jeża.
Jak donosi nam Maria Sobolewska w swoim dzienniku z 1902 roku:
„Znalazłszy się na jednem z zebrań warszawskich, na
którem poznać miałam Rodziewiczównę, szukałam jej oczami i
wówczas oburzył mnie widok młodego chłopca, siedzącego w szarym
surduciku na najprzedniejszym miejscu, wbrew wszelkim wymaganiom
norm towarzyskich. Ogorzałą jego, o regularnych rysach twarz rozjaśniały
piękne, ciemne, w migdał wycięte oczy, niepospolicie rozumne
i dobre, choć hardo patrzące spod wyniosłego czoła, ocienionego
czarną, krótko przystrzyżoną czupryną. Po chwili drobna muskularna
dłoń owego chłopca wyciągnęła się do mnie, twarz jego opromienił
uśmiech pogody, ukazując dołki na twarzy i usta pełne wdzięku i
łagodności, co wszystko razem wzięte dało odblask duszy kobiecej o
subtelnych tajnikach. Stałam przed Rodziewiczówną”
Pisarka do końca życia ukrywała swoje nietypowe preferencje, co nie przeszkadzało jej utrzymywać bliskich relacji z dwoma kobietami naraz. Dyskrecja być może zabezpieczyła jej zachwyty Rymkiewicza i poparcie ruchów konserwatywnych. Bycie trans kobietą natomiast - chroni przed frontalnym atakiem lewicy, której antyekologiczne i narodowo bogoojczyźniane wątki w powieściach podobać się nie mogą.
Cóż za problem dla wszystkich cenzorów! To w końcu nasza czy może ich? Wykreślać czy promować? Szkoda, że biedaczka nie może się już określić po jedynej słusznej stronie!
Ciekawe jestem, czy poparłaby Andrzeja D, zwolennika obdzierania żywcem zwierząt futerkowych, dręczyciela leworęcznych lesbijek, fanatyka przebijającego dętki w rowerach i człowieka, który wmusza kiełbasę w afroeuropejskich wegan?
A może Rafała T, który pali izby pamięci żołnierzy wyklętych, składa wiernopoddańcze hołdy niemieckim mediom (plując w twarz dzieciom z Wrześni), pragnie islamizacji sanktuarium w Licheniu, czy planuje seksualizować bobry na Sanie?
A co mówi ona sama?

Hi! I would not agree, that Jules Verne is - I'm looking for a word - totally-non-progressive. I'd like to point out that I also read between the lines and saw these things you've described. CONS: Jules Verne was a child of his times, if that is correct phrase in Eng. His sin was half-ignorance - he kinda believed in white - especially white scientist and kinda "truth seekers" high morale and reason. How the truth look like - we all know.
This is a good point!
The reason I said he "repeats the racist beliefs of the day", as opposed to "he's a racist" is that, as far as I know, Jules Verne didn't travel much - and when he did, he tended to travel around Europe. He had no direct contact with the people or places he described in his works, and thus relied on others to describe them.
So you get descriptions of New Zealanders as bloodthirsty cannibals ripping corpses to bits in a frenzy. He doesn't think of "savages" in the way he would of Europeans, as people with their own side of the story, their own reasons for doing what they do, etc.
I'm not blaming him specifically for it, because it's easy to believe this if everyone else believes it.
However, this means that I can't recommend him to others. We're much more aware of colonialism and we can see the horrors behind the upbeat adventures in his novels. They strike very differently today than they did in the 19th century, so his works didn't age as gracefully as they might have.
Mind you, when I say "I don't recommend him", I don't mean "don't read him". I just mean "I'm not sure you'd have a good time".
PROS: If you'd consider reading "300 miles…" and this novel backstory, maybe you'd slightly change oppinion. Slightly, because Verne spoiled much - on the other hand, he was made to change his main hero nationality by cenzorship. Question is, if it's not Nemo character and story being more complexed than Verne originally meant? In the end: we should read Verne as we read all the books from this period - carefully. If we won't, we will miss something important.
I think captain Nemo is an interesting character - and it shows Verne is capable of empathizing with people on the bad side of empires and colonialism, even presenting their stories in a more complex manner. But Nemo is closer to home; even in his later variant as an Indian prince, he comes from a culture that's described more favorably by travelers. There's some interest and fascination for Indian culture in Europe, and a lot of contact with it thanks to the British.
People such as the Māori didn't have that advantage, so Verne is more likely to depict them as wild savages - or, alternately, noble savages (such as the Native the group meets in Patagonia).
It's worth reading Verne carefully. However, if you're just starting out reading 19th century adventure novels, he's not the author I'd start with.
Hey, do you know how meanings change in time?
Sometimes things that used to be obscene are now quite normal: "penis" used to mean "tail" in ancient Latin, but it started getting used as an obscenity. Today, because it's Latin, it's just the non-exciting name for the thing.
At other times, things that used to be normal are now read differently? Like the Flintstones having "a gay old time".
So. I've been reading Jules Verne lately.
I don't recommend him, because he's: a) a writer of geography masquerading as an adventure novelist; b) repeating all the racist beliefs of the day with absolutely zero awareness that people far away are still people; c) the quintessential "this is how old writers wrote women" author. (Most authors tend to see them as people, but not Jules Verne!) d) he doesn't do characters.
HOWEVER. In "In Search of the Castaways", I came across something that probably read as an amusing anecdote to contemporaries, but today it looks like heavy-handed gay symbolism.
The story of the book is this: a message in a bottle is found. Captain Grant has been shipwrecked somewhere on the 37th parallel in the Southern Hemisphere, and a group of Scotsmen led by a noble and brave Scottish laird go search for him. They're joined by the distracted Jacques Paganel, a brilliant French geographer who boarded the wrong ship.
Together they cross Patagonia and Australia, and when they reach New Zealand, they get captured by a Māori tribe. Paganel manages to escape, only to be captured by a different tribe than everyone else. When he gets reunited with everyone else, he's very reluctant to explain what happened. He's fine; he's talkative and his usual self when the topic is anything else, but he's absolutely not willing to talk about his time in captivity in any detail.
Finally, his friends learn this:
the chief of that tribe took an instant liking to him
he was greeted by the chief rubbing his nose against him
the chief bound him to himself with ropes
and those ropes were *especially binding* at night
but finally, Paganel escaped
I mean... I'm not the only one snickering, right? This looks like a walk of shame.
Anyway, the crew returns to Scotland. They're all heroes, including Paganel, who's courted by many women. He likes one, but he's very, very reluctant to marry her. He feels that he's "unworthy" of her. He simply can't marry her! Because of a great secret!
A friend finally pries the secret out of him: Paganel got a tattoo in New Zealand. It's of a giant kiwi with wings outstretched, digging its beak into his heart.
Friends. FRIENDS. I'm quite sure a "kiwi" wasn't another name for a New Zealander back in the day, but omg. If I did this in a book, people would accuse it of being so transparent it might as well not be symbolic at all.
I highly doubt this is what Jules Verne meant with that scene (he was probably just throwing in a bit of humor), but omg. It reads very differenly in the 21st century. I found it a bit funnier than the author intended, I'm sure.

Papcio Chmiel is the creator of "Tytus, Romek i A'tomek" comic book series. The first comic was published in 1957, because the communist cenzorship prevented earlier publication (comic books were seen as bad, western, capitalist, grrr).
Henryk Cmielewski was also a participant of Warsaw uprising of '44.

Funniest thing in this post is people going “I can understand why people can’t watch anime, it’s from a different culture after all~” Really, it sounds hillarious to me, because I can’t comprehend how media can be unappealing because it’s just “from a different culture”. 
But it also explains mentality of 4kids and it’s glorious cenzorship. Satoshi is a bad name, it sounds japanese, now his name is “Ash Ketchum”!

Wow, XY TR was really a pain. Like, there were times when I was annoyed and lost interest during Sun and Moon, kind of frustrated even because they were "benched" and I was already bored with the food cart by that point. But... it wasn't a pain. XY, in its original form, WAS a painful experience to sit though. Because I was bombarded with content but little of this had value and even if there was value there was something completely stupid and unnecessary that immedietely destroyed that experience. Not one aspect was "safe" from this. It was that unbelievable.
Here are the results of my edits...
The numbers are: 27 episodes tweaked, 23 episodes left intact (but 10 of those are actually special TR focused episodes and Tripokalons, which means only 13 "normal" episodes that include Team Rocket are good enough, even if most of them are pretty basic and contain a lame stock footage blast-off). Everything else required small edits and cenzorship. That's telling!

imperial Russia, how disappointed they should've be now if still alive to see this russia becoming a nation of drunk, cheap, thieves & prostituted people and ruled by chipmunks. Make a revolution for God sake to bring back Russia. Time to wake up.
I hate to burst your bubble but Imperial Russia was a country that had problems maybe even bigger, starting from starving masses, rampant cenzorship, occassional pogrom and virtual slavery. And they had drunks, thieves and prostitutes as well.
Like… it was definitely not a people´s paradise.
